Hey actor! I have bad news. Just reading SparkNotes or LitCharts isn’t enough when it comes to nailing your Shakespeare monologue. The good news is that I created a new resource to help you feel super duper clear about what everything means, even if you’re a complete beginner. Go here: shakespearewithsarah.com/translate/

I'm not an actor, but I am a songwriter and I taught music for 34 years, so I always find it interesting to see how teachers from various disciplines work.
I'm also a huge fan of this play and have always found Helena to be the key, most relatable character in this play.
I really appreciated watching how you were able to really help take Vlada's performance to another level.
She was really great at taking direction and starting to implement your suggestions and I can only imagine what she will be able to do with that direction as she continues to work with it and integrate it!
Thanks to you both for sharing this excellent content and for her willingness to allow us to be part of her process, that took a lot of courage to put herself out there in this way! I wish her the best in her career!

She was great at taking direction, I agree. It’s not an easy thing to do, especially when you know you’re being recorded!
Thank you for your good wishes. I think musical people often have an appreciation (and sometimes aptitude) for Shakespeare. I know that my background in music definitely helps me to understand the rhythms of the verse, as well as how to vary my pitch to communicate meaning. Maybe “classical actor” will be the next string to your bow!

This was very fun to watch! Love the exploring of sound, pitch, etc, to engage with the text. What a cool process!

Thank you so much for walking us through this process! I have an audition tomorrow using Helena's monologue, and your videos have been SO helpful. (I really needed the reminder about upward infections and down ones!)

So glad you found it useful! Downward inflections are actually so key in all Shakespeare but so few people are aware of it.
Let me know how the audition went. Hope you get the part you want!

Hi Sarah, thank you so much for this amazing video. I have just started my channel and will be staring in the role of Helena very soon - I hope to vlog the experience on my channel. It is my first ever sakespeare so I am naturally nervous but I can't wait and you have given me so much confidence :)
