Iv always wanted to cruise some of the rivers, especially the lower Mississippi. I'm relatively young, would you recommend these type of cruises for a little bit younger couple? My wife and I really like the fun atmosphere, similar to like carnival, but without the drinking, partying, nightclub type of activities. The river boats seem to have an older demographic. Im worried that we wouldnt be as welcomed by members of this demographic.
The typical passenger is definitely over 65 years old. About the only times you see younger folks is when Grandma or Grandpa has brought them along. The atmosphere is very friendly and very casual. Be aware that these cruises are not priced like a Carnival cruise... because there are so few passengers on the ship, the costs of running the cruise are split among a smaller number of people. You can do two or three Carnival cruises for the price of one of these. The typical passenger is so financially comfortable that the cost of the cruise just doesn't matter all that much.
There are some riverboats on American rivers that are styled like a 19th century paddlewheeler, to appeal to nostalgia of the old days of cruising on the river. But American Cruise Lines has had a lot of success with these "modern riverboats" like you see in this video. They've been building new ones as fast as they can to meet a growing demand for cruises within the USA. There are so many interesting places within the USA that can be explored by a boat like this... without having to travel with a passport, or get jet lagged by flying to Europe.
I love Paducah, I go there every year for the Quilt show and to go to the National Quilt Museum. You gave me more ideas of what to see there.
