I'm 14. Harry Chapin is all me and my Dad have in common. He is the middle ground where we can come together and agree. Dad saw him in concert shortly before he died, Harry stayed and signed autographs and talked to everyone. Dad said "It's nice to meet you Mr. chapin, I really enjoyed the show!" Harry said "Please, call me Harry." And asked dad his name and talked to him for a while. What an incredible man, Thank you Harry for saying what my heart feels in your songs. You are greatly missed. :(

To some lonely kids, that voice on the radio was their only friendly human contact. I don't know if disc jockeys ever realize how important they were to a lot of kids like me when they took the time to chat on the phone while the record was playing. Every time I hear this song, I'll always remember not only Harry but all the DJs like WKY's Ronnie Kaye and WOL's Nighthawk who were a big part of my life growing up.

I was a 17 year old disc jockey on an AM radio in Syracuse, NY when this song first came out. I had to make a decision whether or not to take an offer to stay at the station full time or take a college scholarship. This song made all the difference in my life, I chose the later. It opened my eyes to the reality faced by co DJs, for many of whom the song could have served as their biography. In the next few years I saw Harry in concert before his death, I wish I could have told him thank you...

This song is on par with Wichita Lineman and Space Oddity. I'd love to program the three on a radio show. Radio. No future in radio.
Each title features a man and his work and his estrangement from a love interest, a wife, and or a family he created. Each title is a sad song but produced artfully. The vocal arrangement of the O L D jingle is almost a chant, is amost a meditation, with the backing music. WOLD might be the best song of the three. That's impressive and not a slight against the other two classic pop songs.
    RIP HC.

+Ethan Hill With respect, there's plenty of future in radio. It's online. It's just that the rest of world is blowing past the US on this one, because the American music industry pirates think they can roll back the calendar to 1950 with abusive copyright laws. What's actually happening is stations in other countries are trampling the US as they migrate to the new technology. One good example: Radio Caroline [UK]. Anyway, yeah. Harry Chapin. Been a fan since high school. (1970s.) Also, if you like the Bowie track (like me), check out Space Doggity by Jonathan Coulton.

Seeing that you saw only two concerts in your life and one was Harry Chapin
you are a very lucky person... Harry Chapin was a great Troubadour.
All of his songs had so much meaning. Thanks

It's so good to read the comments of all these fans. My sons and I saw him in concert about six times, and we had tickets for a performance at the Star Plaza in Merrillville, In. We got word of the tragic accident just a few days before scheduled performance. No one captured magic moments of time in story songs like Harry. From the way you guys sound, you sat in the back or the balcony at his concerts ... It's like he always said, "You can ALways count on the cheap seats!" Miss ya, man ...

One of the most beautifully crafted songs in my opinion...the lyrics the voice the arangement, ironically I discovered only recently on XM channel 32, now I listen to it almost exclusively waiting to hear this song, RIP Mr Harry Chapin.

I was privileged to have seen Harry in concert on a hot summer night on Boston's City Hall Plaza. He was amazing! It is still one of the best concerts I have been to. He was such a wonderful storyteller. I miss him immensely.
He was way too young, and there are so many stories he never got to tell.
    Thank you Harry!

If you are from Boston, you will appreciate that Jim Roberts did a tribute to Harry shortly after his death, during which he spoke at some length about how this song resonated with him.

Makes me think of college days of Grahm Jr. College in Boston in the mid 1970's . those were the days and this song is one of the greats that stick with you many years after the 1st time you heard it. :)

A great American singer/songwriter who never got enough praise while he lived, and who died far too early in a horrible car accident... Harry Chapin

+Jonathan Berman Yes ur right for I remember it well was driving from N.Mia. Bch., FL to Cape Cod, MA, where I had heard him in concert the yr before. I stuck in a traffic jam on a Bridge in New York City, listening to the radio and heard that he was supposed to play a free concert benefiting children hunger, When they said he was running late. Coming across the bridge I saw a VW beatle bug crushed under a semi, as I siad to my wife who ever was in there had to have died, not thinking anything about a couple hours down the road almost to MA, we heard on the radio that he had been kill in a crash & described how along w/ car. Yes we had just driven by it that day...He has been missed & I was very luck to have heard him concert... Yeah I'm long winded....

I was a fan of Harry Chapin from the first time I heard his songs on the radio, to the times I bought all his LP's. When I heard of his passing I sat in my room and cried. My heart went out to his family and all of his fans. We lost such a great man that day. There was never a singer/songwriter as Harry Chapin, and there never will be. Thank you kind man who cared for so many of us, especially those who have Multiple Sclerosis, thank you for raising funds for that so many years ago.

Much missed. A brilliant song and I remember being blown away on hearing this first as a student when I was in Leipzig in the spring of 1974. We could only get any decent music on Radio Luxembourg (along with the dross at the time) due to dodgy reception of other stations. I certainly don't remember it on the 'Internationale Schlagparade' we got from Radio Bayern! 36 years on, I'm still blown away by it. Thanks for putting it on the site. Mach's gut!!

I had a friend who's job was working at a venue that Harry was to play at. Part of his job was to arrange transportation for the acts. He had a friend who was a big fan and he asked her if she would mind picking him up at the airport about 2 hours away. When she got to the airport Harry was there waiting for her with flowers and a box of candy. They had a great ride back. Class act.
