  • Pukeatua Track to Kapakapanui Track
    Waikanae
    Tararua Forest Park
    Walking time: 8:45am to 5pm.
Unfortunately I ran out of time and never made it to the hut. Next time I will leave earlier or stay at the hut.
On this trip I saw 3 pigs.

Thank you for posting. I have long wanted to check out the old track between Pukeatua and Kapakapanui.

You are welcome. It is a fun walk now, having to find your own way.

It looks very hard to find the path in the Forest, for example, I barely can find the path in here 07:22 th-cam.com/video/1l0Iwi2ju58/w-d-xo.html.
Thanks for sharing the bush adventure!

Really enjoyed your video and inspires me to explore that area when I return to NZ later this year. The video quality is excellent too - what camera are you using? I have a GoPro 12 and plan to use that, but others prefer something like an iPhone, or a combination of both.

Thanks for the great feedback. I use a GoPro 11, with the lowest Sharpness setting. Some of the stills in this video are from a Panasonic digital camera with a good zoom.

@@wellington_walker That sounds a good combination. Using just the GoPro does limit things; a decent lens on a good quality 'regular' camera overcomes the fixed focal length of the GoPro lens.
You were brave to venture so far off the beaten track. Looks hard work but clearly you have the confidence and experience to do so!

How about that? I did that tramp Mangaone Walkway, Pukeatua Track, then the untracked ridge section to 890 then down to Kapakapanui Hut as an overnight loop about a month later, on 23 August 2023. I then walked out the direct track to Ngatiawa Road then back along Mangaone South Road to the Mangaone/Pukeatua carpark. You probably could have done that on your day trip if you don't mind a bit of road bashing. But I realise it was July with shorter days for you.

Thanks for the idea. I might try that sometime.

Thanks . Do you carry any emergency overnighting gear with you ?

Very good question. Up to now no. I carry a survival blanket and always carry extra base layers of thermals, in case I get wet or need extra layers. I always carry gloves and a hat, which would come in handy if I ended up staying overnight, unplanned. I carry a Garmin InReach Mini that allows me to communicate via satellite, using text or email.
