: Eishoji is the only nunnery in Kamakura. With a beautiful bamboo forest, a richly colored hall that reflects the glory of the Edo period, almost all building were original from thr era, and even cave exploration, it is a temple rich in variety where you can experience many things in one temple. The highlight is the bright red spider lily flower garden in autumn! Please take a look.
(History) Okaji no Kata (concubine of Tokugawa Ieyasu) built this temple as a nunnery on the site of an old Dokan family her ancestor mansion. Okaji no Kata was given the name Okatsu,( Lady of Victory), because he would win she accompanied him into battle.
Okatsu no Kata became the foster mother to Tokugawa Yorifusa, the founder of the Mito Tokugawa clan. Generations of daughters from the Mito clan subsequently served as head num. So this temple became highly ranked in Edo period society that it became known as the “Mito Masion”, and a therr-leaved hollyhock, the crest of the Tokugawa clan.
The Butsuden, shido, karamon, and belfry were all originally built in the Edo period, making Eishoji Temple a rare example of an intact temple from the era.
