- I always thought that popcorn was made from regular corn, but it turns out I was totally wrong. To make popcorn, the kernels need to have much stronger shells, and a completely different type of corn is used. To pop it, it's the same as regular popcorn, and all I have to do is put the whole cob in the microwave.

"My efficiency was approximately 92%, which is honestly pretty bad. Theoretically, every kernel should convert to popcorn. But this was already more than I needed for snacking, so I was okay with it. Mengo it’s important, when you see spam bot accounts, to go to their account first and report the account for being a bot spam account first, and then report the comment second. Because when you report comments, it disappears (for you) automatically. In my notes app I have a 300 character (that’s the limit) paragraph which I simply copy and paste and I use it to report these kinds of early video comments for adult entertainment links, which most certainly contain malware.

My great grandfather’s family grew popcorn on their farm in western New York in the early 20th century, until about the 1920s. One year they had a serious downturn in demand for popcorn, selling almost none of it, so they had to live off their popcorn harvest and milk from their cow for almost a full year. To this day, my family still has a tradition of “popcorn and milk” to remember their hardships and celebrate their victories. Thanks for the fun video!

microwaves use standing waves, meaning there are parts where there is lots of energy and parts where there’s none (which is why the plate spins to try and get each part of the food touching the high energy bits at some point) so there’s parts of a microwave where if you put a small enough camera there (smaller than a blueberry which exploded b/c they’re the same size as the wavelength so it gets supercharged) then it’s fine, say like where a screw goes or something

Why did I laugh at that
Me and my brother wanted to drill a hole throu a wall at home for a wire and in a radius of maybee 2 inches the top layer in the wall crumbeled down. Our mum heared us, saw what we were doing and got angry. "We can do this of vours, but not in a way that we have to repair the wall afterwards..."
We all looked at the damaged part of the wall and as we all looked ashamed and silentely a part of it crumbeled down. It had the same feeling like that pop corn and me and my brother couldn't stop laugthing...
You know, I always assumed popcorn kernals came in a bag or the little stove tin things for like, pressure, and they wouldn't pop right otherwise, it's wild to me that no, the reason's just way simpler: the popcorn would just go everywhere otherwise.
Well the stove tin is also for providing heat transfer on the stove, but yeah, otherwise it's pretty much just a container.

A local farmstand in my town actually sells this type of popping corn. Getting the kernels off of the cob is kind of hard and hurts a little, so it is indeed more convenient just to cook the whole thing, cob and all.

problem is, growing up , we used to visit grandma on her mountain house, the only corn i ever saw was the hard one, i never really knew there was sweet corn and hard corn and was always amazed thinking the corn on the cob we ate boiled or grilled was the same hard corn , took me a long time to know, i was even more surprised to know some people eat the sweet corn raw from the cob like nothing.....we live and learn.
Interesting to see how the kernels in the middle pop first, and the ones at the ends don't, because of the radiation pattern inside.

The same kind of corn (or similar kind) is used to make corn flour. I remember my grandmother teaching us kids how to properly take the kernels off the cob so we could grind them to make tortillas. It was actually kind of fun.

He drilled a small hole on the back of the microwave, as long as the diameter of the hole is smaller than the wave length, it won’t cause radiation leak, also the camera is outside the microwave taped to the back recording through that small hole, you can actually see the hole when he put the corn in.

As someone who grew up in the sticks and has spent plenty of time both chillin and working on farms, it surprises me how many people weren't aware of the different kinds of corn.

one interesting bit is how all of the initial kernels to pop were at the same level on the cob. I guess this could be due to how the cob developed, but my guess is that it is due to the standing waves in the microwave imparting more energy to those kernels. I've always wanted to see a 3-d demonstration of microwave standing waves. The usual ones using chocolate in a sheet just shows you two dimensions, but I wonder what it would look like in 3D

I did this with my grandfather when I was really little, he just put the cob in the microwave and we watched it pop. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Pop corn pops because the moisture within the kernel steams, but is unable to escape due to the hard shell. This continues until the pressure is too great and it bursts open, the internal corn meant now cooked and exposed.
Meanwhile, I'm the opposite. I knew popcorn wasn't just normal corn, but for some reason I didn't even consider it might still come on a cob like normal corn does, and just assumed it was some different plant entirely or something.
Lol me too...but...i never liked popcorn anyways, the little black sharp things get stuck in the gums...unpleasent experience removing those
I actually haven't seen sweet corn back in my home country. Sweet corn was the same thing as the hard corn you used but boiled. We would prepare the hard shell corn by roasting it on fire and adding spices with lemon on it. It's really good
That's not the same as sweet corn, but sounds tasty.
It’s called a bhutta here in india, we would roast it then apply spices, and lemon on surface, another way is instead of roasting, just boiling it and then applying sip iced and lemon.

Just ate some today, cooked it in the microwave, shuck, cob, silks and all. Cook for 1.5 minutes and remove from microwave, cut through bottom section and pull the shuck and silks off from the other end. No salt or butter even needed. Yum Yum.
Nile is very good at hiding the anger in his voice, but i can tell he was utterly fuming when he learned the truth about popcorn.
I didn't know about popcorn vs sweet corn until 10 years old, when I went to a corn farm, and popped some multicolored maize. It was burned. More importantly, 01:23 is how I eat popcorn. :)
