    I recently aquired a king snake that has a kink. I tried to feed her recently and she would not take any food. I'm going to wait a few more days and try again. I'm really hope I can get her to eat

      Hi Ashley. My 8 Ball female is still "thriving". She just eats smaller meals and grows slower than she otherwise would. In mine, the kink is quite high up so her difficulty is swallowing, not digestion or passing food down the digestive tract. If the kink is lower down it can prevent proper digestion and waste expulsion. Either way, try meals much smaller than normal. Hopefully you get your Kingsnake eating. Normally Kingsnakes are the most tenacious of snakes, so she has that "attitude" on her side. Good luck!

    Thanks for the shoutout Rob. Hopefully the 8 ball can eat. Hard to decipher what is black pastel vs cinnamon.

      @@RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls i used to breed poultry, the amount of animals i had to dispatch was horrendus, it started to be a non rewarding thing in the end. And regardless of experience and time I spent doing the hobby... it never got any easier.

    Hello, are these children suitable for breeding?

    • @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls
      @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi M_z. The only deformed snake in the clutch was the super form or allelic combination of black pastel/cinnamon and she will not be bred, although usually the heterozygous babies she may produce would likely be ok.
      The rest of the clutch are perfectly fine and genetically suitable for breeding. In fact I have a female black pastel from this clutch who is coming up to breeder size for this coming season.

    It May help to stretch the spine. Spine will make a light popping sound when you gently stretch the reptile, same popping sound happens when you stretch the human spine. . Stretching is perhaps the missing key to konked spine.😎🌞👍 Let me know if ,y suggestions helps anyone.

    • @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls
      @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate. The cause of spinal defects in snakes are often not just misalignment and cartilage or disc problems that can be fixed with traction, but in this case are genetic birth defects, coupled with a duck bill, probably a cleft palette and a lack of ability to tongue flick. I'm not sure if this snake has a tongue and can't use it or just doesn't have one.
      Snake vertebrae articulate a bit differently to human vertebrae. Without an X ray it's difficult to say if the defects actually involve mis formed vertebrae, but the sharp angle kinks suggest more than just cartilage. The spinal chord is obviously vital to nerve impulses essential for locomotion and her kinks are just behind the neck, so any disruption to the spinal chord would be fatal.
      I'm pretty sure this genetic birth defect can't be fixed, but will not get worse with age. She can eat and function now, so I'm assuming she will live a full and normal life in captivity. In some cases kinking in snakes is so severe that food cannot pass down the GI tract resulting in inevitable starvation. She isn't as bad as that and can eat.
      To be honest I never heard of or even considered traction for a kinked snake that actually survives. I will discuss this with my reptile vet and get their opinion.

    It seems that the more movement she makes, better the situation is in her neck is. I guess its like scoliosis in humans. Hopefully her jaw and neck issues won't stop her from eating properly. It does seem like she can straighten her neck after moving a bit. Maybe an idea to do some snake physio on her

    • @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls
      @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      She is behaving normally with her clutch mates in the shedding tub and I do see she moves better. I have tried gently stretching her out and she can straighten. I'm hopeful she will be able to eat normally.

    You shouldn't euthanize them AKA kill them just because the kinks most snakes can live with the Kinks unless they are severe. And yes some of the snakes do need help with eating and that's not an issue because a lot of people don't care to help their snake to eat.

    • @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls
      @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kat, don't worry, she is still with me and still doing OK at 2.5 years old now. I have been meaning to do an update video on her and an update on my key genetic considerations video which I did a while ago now. It isn't all good news. She is tiny compared to her siblings. I have 6 month old hatchlings bigger than her. She eats unassisted, but not very often. She will strike and coil whenever I offer food, always a very aggressive feeding response, but she just drops it and leaves it. She actually eats her "kill" perhaps once a month or even less. Her kinking isn't severe but it's right at the neck and I suspect this makes it harder for her to actually swallow. I feed her small mice, small ASF's and rat fluffs. I keep waiting for her to get bigger so she can eat easier, but it's taking a long time. Movement and behaviour wise she is actually not badly effected and seems quite normal in this regard, but she is quite nervous and snappy and this is probably the result of her genetics as much as it is her deformity. Superforms of certain genes, along with Champagne and some other morphs tend to be more "angry" than most Ball Pythons.
      Hope this reassures you! I will need to do this update soon as you are not the only one who has been asking.

    If you knew the risk of the deformity within the breeds and the jeans why did you go ahead with the breeding
    Very irresponsible

    • @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls
      @RobertBarracloughRoyalBalls  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for the comment. I will attempt to answer.
      There are sufficient undeformed 8 balls to make deformity far from a certain outcome. Most of the time it actually works out fine. I know of many people who have Super Cinnamons, Super Black Pastels and Cinnamon Black Pastel combos that are perfectly fine. But others are not so "lucky".
      Genetically speaking, whenever we create the super form of any genetic mutation, there is a chance that any unnoticed defects in the genetic code are doubled up across the allele producing defects in the superform. With so many new genetic mutations being produced and the superform of that mutation being highly desireable, we take a risk every time we produce a superform whether its been done before or not.
      Line breeding of pedigree animals with shared genetic material with their parents is also highly risky, but we breed horses for racing, various breeds of dogs and cats, any number of fish, goats, chickens, all with specific characteristics in mind, many of which are certainly not beneficial to the animal, but are pleasing to us.
      I'm not trying to claim that knowingly pairing snakes that will cause issues in the offspring is OK just because humans do these things to almost every animal they interact with or farm for food. I'm saying the outcome was not at all certain and there is always a risk when you breed anything.
      I am very sad the snake was deformed. She will not be bred in future but will remain in my collection. I will not repeat this pairing using these same snakes in the future, but if I had failed on that attempt, it would still be on my list of snakes I wanted to make.
      I do take the genetic considerations of breeding these animals very seriously. I did a video on key genetic considerations on my channel addressing many of these issues and correcting some myths. So I did go into the project as informed as I could have been.
