The Assassin ist ein Martial-Arts-Epos, das im China zur Zeit der Tang-Dynastie spielt. Nachdem die 10-jährige Nie Yinniang (Qi Shu) von einer Nonne entführt wird, weist diese sie in die Kunst des Tötens ein. Jahre später kehrt Nie als junge Frau in ihre Heimatstadt zurück, um einen General zu ermorden, der sich gegen das Gesetz des Kaisers stellt. Dabei wird sie nicht nur mit ihrer Vergangenheit in Form ihrer Eltern konfrontiert, sondern auch mit einer schweren Entscheidung. Denn Nies Ziel ist der Mann, dem sie versprochen war. So kann sie entweder den Mann, den sie liebt, ermorden oder mit dem Orden der Assassinen brechen.

Am 21. Mai 2015 feiert der Film von Hsiao-hsien Hou seine Weltpremiere bei den Internationalen Filmfestspielen von Cannes. Den taiwanesischen Regisseur kennt man unter anderem von der französischen Produktion Die Reise des roten Ballons und dem Episodenfilm Three Times. In letzterem arbeitete Hou auch bereits mit Qi Shu zusammen. Die ebenfalls aus Taiwan stammende Schauspielerin erlangte 2002 internationale Bekanntheit, als sie neben Jason Statham in The Transporter vor der Kamera stand.
I loved the slow pace simplicity and uncomplicated story line of the movie ,the sounds of nature and visuals were exceptional. 9/10
It is rooted in their philosophy that humans control of the mind is powerful and that perhaps since societal norms control us in various ways, when it comes to the individual discipline of martial arts, it is there that we become masters of our universe and we can do and undo great feats of flexibility, strength, agility, speeds, precisions and so forth.

Does anyone know what the music is in this trailer?
The dialogue is in ancient Chinese, even modern Chinese won't fully recover the scene. No surprising negative reviews from English speakers, and I don't believe they can understand the story just from the subtitles. Ancient Chinese to English translation is always inaccurate.
This trailer is the best part of the film.

come on man, the point isn't the fighting, the meaning is what's all about, that's Chinese art
this film is exceptional.
It was an okay movie in term of the story and kind of slow for a martial arts movie but it is extremely well shot. It has some of the best and most beautiful shots this year. It is clearly inspired by Akira Kurosawa's style of directing which adds a lot to it. 6.5/10

cinesimonj Well there is some elements of kurosawa's style especially in the composition of movements in the background. and yes it is a martial arts movie because it is listed as one, even though the action is artsy

ชอบทุกอย่าง ยกเว้นการค้างภาพนิ่ง คนยืนนิ่ง ยืนอึ้ง กินเวลาหนังมากก จริงๆหนังไม่มีอะไรมาก มันควรจะจบได้ภายใน 30 นาทีถ้าไม่ยืดเวลายืนอึ้ง ยืนนิ่ง นั่งเฉยๆ
The movie looks really good, except for actual plot and fight.
Don't be fooled. This is NOT a martial arts movie. Be prepared for lots and lots and lots of talking and fancy camera work and scenery and talking. I think i saw one sword in the movie.

The extremely good reviews of this film are completely misleading,they are written by pretentious film academics.The film was boring from start to finish.The only praise I can give is for some great costumes and spectacular scenery shots,but that is all.If the quality of a film is based on the budget and length of time it takes to make then The Assassin is a winner....but what a waste of time and money.

With all do respects, why do Chinese action films have an exaggerated touch; why during fights people fly & run in an unrealistic way! Is there a principal behind it or a signature moves that has to be put? Because personally, I hate it.
+AbdulAziz Bin-Sunaid They are trying to bite on the style of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon which won several awards for its fighting choreography when it first came out.

Why is this movie 4:3 and not 16:9 ratio - who does that anymore?
+Scott Richardson It's seen a resurgence the last few years by a few really brilliant directors. There are many reasons, but one common one is about purposely restricting the peripheral vision of the audience. It really works.
+cinesimonj Yes...but the director and producers have to consider their audience. Some will see this movie at the cinema which I guess can draw the curtains to suit the screen size (other examples were 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' and 'The Artist' which I didn't notice their format whilst viewing in the cinema) however, most people will watch this movie at home on almost exclusively widescreen televisions where it looks awkward and detracts from the visual experience as I found with the aforementioned movies.
+Scott Richardson and you could also say to people who use 16:9 "Why aren't you using 21:9!?" There's nothing wrong with 4:3. It's all about personal preference and how the director wants to tell the story.
+Scott Richardson The film is good enough that once you're into it, it really doesn't matter, regardless of screen size. Of course they consider their audience. But they're not as sycophantic toward the mainstream audience as others - they didn't make a fight film, after all.

However, the original language (mandarin), it's using language that was used in olden times (think Shakespeare; different from English today) and was often more poetic and succinct already. Therefore, it is natural (and beautiful!) in mandarin but made awkward in translation, which is a shame.
