    The rev4 was a dream come true for me. Sounds ace and I don't worry that it will need to go to the shop on a regular basis.

    Personally I really don’t get why people would pay 2.5-3x the cost of a brand new Prophet-5 rev4 to get a 40+ years old rev3. The rev4 was designed by Dave Smith himself so it’s not a clone, it’s a re-issue that is almost indistinguishable from the original . Now of course when you are dealing with 40+ years old analog synths no two of them will sound exactly the same so the same goes for the rev3 vs the rev4 they don’t sound exactly the same the same way no two rev3 sound exactly the same.

    • @anoniconoclast2030
      @anoniconoclast2030 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But you are using logic. Synths and music is subjective, emotional, sentimental, irrational, biased, prejudiced, etc. This isn't a bad thing. Some things in life need to be left of center. But having said that and owning a p5 rev2 and 3.2, 3.3, I will be getting the rev 4. Hahaha....

    I think it definitely worth it, but mainly in the case of obtaining a Rev 2. However, you then have to account for the fact that those run more like $10,000+ instead of ~$7,000 for a Rev 3. So then the question becomes: It is worth it to pay 5x as much over the Rev 4 to have the original Dave Rossum designed 2040 filters over the modern redesign 2140s? There are certainly some out there who would say yes, but I have to agree that it is incredibly hard to justify... Personally, I nearly always want "the original", but in this case I was willing to make an exception. The velocity and after touch just take it to another level.
    Dave Smith did originally offer the Prophet 10 in a single manual form factor upon release of the Prophet 5 in 1978. 6 were sold in total before they decided to stop offering the option. Sequential offered to remove the 2nd voice board for these owners to improve tuning stability, but 5 of the 6 were never returned as their owners preferred them as they were. Consequently, a couple were actually featured in some movie scores.
    Prices of the original did take a small hit upon initial release of the Rev 4, but nothing significant. Originals absolutely will continue to go up in value. One thing is certain... If you own a Prophet 5/10 (600?) in any form, you've got nothing to complain about :) Absolutely incredible instruments.

      Agreed 100% . Didn’t realize how magical this synth is. It just....works so well.

  • @leo_polo
    @leo_polo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    It’s so worth it!
    I love the sequential sound. I’ve always wanted a P5 and saved up for a Prophet 6 as soon as Dave announced it as it’s predecessor. When I finally got one and heard the “PROPHET“ sound I knew it was worth every penny.
    Not gonna lie I was sort of disappointed when the Rev4’s came out- seeing as it was what I originally really wanted (guessing a lot of p6 owners feel the same.) But in the end I’m happy with the extra features and effects the p5’s lack and eith the new vintage mode I decided not to “upgrade”.

    • @asoundlab
      @asoundlab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Really want to play on a P6! I’ve heard they’re fantastic. They’re out of the lime light right now but I’m curious in the long run if the P6 will be preferred to the reissue P5

    • @SamuelLaflamme
      @SamuelLaflamme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@asoundlab I'm curious too! After having played with the P5 rev4 and my P6 for two weeks in my studio, I wasn't able to say good bye to my P6. Too many options/features I'm using everyday on the P6 aren't on the P5 Rev4. Don't get me wrong, I understand exactly Dave Smith's move here to let the P5 as the original, without stereo, seq/arp etc etc, and respect it totally. But since the P6 offered the Vintage Knob option 3 months later, it became clear to me that I did the right choice for me by keeping my P6. My favorite feature (after the Vintage Knob)of the P5 is the size of the instrument and the layout. If you want to really do a "best sound" comparison, compare both rack versions without the superior aesthetic of the P5 keyboard... my dream prophet would be a P6 Rev 2 with 61 keys, big P5 knobs, the options to add/sum waveforms on top of each others like the P5, and why not polyphonic aftertouch! ;) One can always dreams! ;) Thanks for the video!!!

    Always great videos! The rev4 is a brilliant piece especially for major studio use, but I'm happy with a Prophet 6 or even the DSI Rev2 for 'vintage inspired' modern synths with more flexibility. Of course vintage is worth it for collectors and other specific buyers but for modern players the rev4 is a better option in a lot of ways. Though either way I couldn't be more excited for the next few years as our option keep getting better and better!

    I'd say get a REV 4. It sounds very good and it is a faithful recreation of the classic with some essential modern features added. And who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if the REV 4 becomes more sought after than the vintage models and actually cost more on the used market once they go out of production simply because they are just as authentic, sound just as good, and they are much more reliable with newer components.
    Look at what happened to the Moog Minimoog Model D reissue after it stopped being manufactured.

    My prophet 5 rev 2 quickly turned into a prophet 4 rev 2, after a voice issue. The rev 3 that I got afterwards had tuning issues. Keeping this is mind I'd say the vintage one should still be worth a lot more than the new one, they just sound so much better. But today I would opt for the rev 4, in a mix differences shrink rapidly, midi capabilities, 5 additional voices...The real gems are the rev 1 and 2.

  • @marcusfreeweb
    @marcusfreeweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Vintage sounds different/often better to me. It's a matter of degree though. For many use cases the Rev. 4 would equally do, I guess. Maybe even better in some cases. Still, if I got the money, not a question.

  • @nickhaldin8674

    Why would you buy an old synth that you know will eventually break? when you can buy from the same company an exact clone and better? If you did a comparison sound side by side probably no difference, I would go with the new versions for me.

    • @nilsvanderplancken
      @nilsvanderplancken 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When it breaks it can be repared, a rev 4 can maybe be repared by swapping an entire bord, it’s not made to be repared by itself. Many people, like me do not like synths with smd technology. Also it’s far from an exact clone, in real life the differences are bigger than on youtube. First hand experience.
