Used to play at Dudhope Castle and sit on the big cannon which was in a different location down at the lower side of the castle, where they used to put on summer shows at the outdoor stage. Played tennis there too when I lived at East Summerville Place.

Many times the dates stamps are casting dates. My guess on the date that is stamp on the trunnion is either a casting/manufacture date or perhaps an inspection date. Hmmmm? Question...was the Crimean War in 1813? Just wondering.

Actually no, Crimea all kicked off about 40 years after that in 1853. Good shout. I note that the gun is stamped 'Carron 1829'. The Carronvale Foundry works were in Falkirk, so it's probably not Russian either. In fact, in bears the GR cypher, so it's from the Georgian period. George III snuffed it in 1820 and George IV in 1830, so it can't be from the Crimea.

He could have mentioned that the house was once was inhabited by John Graham, 7th Laird of Claverhouse (Bonnie Dundee), hero of the Jacobite cause that died victorious at the battle of Killiecrankie in 1689.

Crimean war ,October 1863 to March 1856
Highlights ,Florence nightingale and the charge of the light brigade
Total incompetence by the ruling classes resulted in tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths ,just like WW1
