Terry Fitzgerald was a force in big waves that none of us had ever seen before. Why? Because he was new and wild, with an extremely captivating unique style.
It's really nice to see a short clip with the level of artistic input of many of the older classic surf films. Today we see so many short, 1-minute long 'distraction' clips on youtube, of 'world's biggest wave' or 'kelly shredding contest', rather than honest, well-mediated inspired work such as this. Keep it up hot buttered! yew
While some surfers struggle on single fin boards, others feel single fin boards work great because of the feeling of control you have especially on bottom turns and with the right template, rail. rocker etc.and are great fun to ride and every surfer should give it a try if they haven't already ; keeps it interesting
Fitzgerald v. Richardson Om Bali Pro 1980 - Uluwatu was pushing a big shoulder instead of barrelling down the line - Fitzgerald said "I've won this" before they paddled out.
Supperrr! That takeoff at 4:28 was good. Interesting to see a modern stance on an old board - shows the board works but also highlights huge limitations too. Bobby Owens - great surfer. Nick, not so much. Simon - well, did anyone change boards more than him? Plus he ripped!
Its also a lot of fun using a small fin and playing with some slipping around a bit. doubt I want to do the Derrick Hynd thing , but a little slipping around is kinda fun now and again.
Yes, Yes, Yes. The modern single fin; ie Harbour HP1. for me is by far my only favorite ride. No# 1 speed. WHen I was learning to surf behind a biggish boat, we tried many different boards. THe very best was a 7.5' to 8.5' single fin funboard. Now we tried some tri-fin boards and they had way too much drag and did very poorly behind the boat. So we took the side bites off and the same board ripped. We could fade back, walk forward, speed up, slow down, cross the wake, all of it and free hand, ( No Rope ) It was crystal clear to us the single fin was faster, looser, and just way more fun. So thats what ai bought for first board, the #Harbour HP1, awesome. Next I bought a Harbour Habenaro, Now It was A tri-fin. I couldn't ride it. It was if I was dragging a wet tee-shirt behind me. SO, I took off the side bits glassed over the pockets and oh - ya - Baby, the board came alive. The difference is awesome. So thats my story. Also , if you have an opportunity to learn behind a boat; well it takes years off of the learning curve. But yes, the social part, well for me was the hardest part. NObody wanted to hear I had only been surfing for 30-50 days. Pissed them off.
I love surfing backside like this, staying on the tip of your toes with most of your weight, you can just Wapash! that lip.... Very stylistic and beautiful! Have always loved the Fitzgerald's way of surfing; from father to son
The only way to fly. All the tri setup does, is suck your board down. I think guys think its a thruster because the baord would go anywhere unless they pump, pump it. Thats my take. I can't even ride a tri-fin setup. I walk right off the front of it. Like I'm dragging a tee shirt behind me.
Real adventurers will try single fins. Hipsters are unfortunately the majority and do it as a failed fashion statement. Same as SUP folks. Real watermen do it because it is what they do. Most do it because they can't paddle anymore or it is the flavor of the month. Same as the Harley Davidson freaks of the past decade. Real people did it when it was not popular. Why do I comment? I hate hipsters of any generation. The worst fake people and lowest of humanity ever. So weak that they need to be different to feel safe. Real people do what they want, against the grain or whatever, the real whatever. It is like hippies, wow I hate hippies. Remember the word has"hip" in it. That is translated to I am "hipper" than you. Go figure.
Awesome waves -- it takes me back to my youth in Australia
The beaches were where the waves and the girls were- I didn’t know how good I had it ❤️
Back to the roots dude. I love that surfing. Kepp going surfa. Single fin rules!

I bet you wear jimmy choo shoes.
or.... you could not worry about what other people are doing or labeling them and just live your own life.
Your way better off if u learn on a single fin then transition to a tri.
Guy rips. Period.
