great video, about to tackle my broken window switch this evening. Quick tip for anyone who's windows are stuck open as the button is broken (or stuck closed and its really hot and you need to drive home before fixing) if you press and hold the key fob locking button any open windows on the car will close. Conversely if you press and hold the unlock button, all the windows on your car will open. Hopefully that will let you keep your car safe or cool if your windows are either up, or down, when your window switch breaks. 👍🏼👍🏼
Just want to let you know I have the same problem on my VW Touran . The VW Service center would fix it for $2,000 HK dollars. So I did it myself, I Ordered on Amazon for the the part. Took me 1 hour to replace part and fixed. Very happy. Thank you for your help and video. All the best.😊
I'm wondering why you didn't just remove the switch and bezel from the top of the door card instead of removing the entire door card and risk breaking stuff that has nothing to do with removing and replacing the window switch. Just use a flat bladed screwdriver under the forward part of the bezel and pop it out from the top instead of underneath. It looks like you went the long way around of doing it the simple way.
I was thinking the same thing. But on my mk7 gti I couldn’t just remove the switch and housing without breaking the tabs or the door card. So you have to take it off. Wasn’t so bad. Only took about 30-45 mins
Thanks for this video. My main window switch completely disintegrated after a few years of use. The plastic just broke. All that was left was sharp metal. In any case, this video made me feel better about doing it myself. Bought a genuine VW switch module and swapped myself. Easy peasy. Gratsi!
I did it! I actually f#*king did it! Normally these TH-cam 10 minute hacks take me 4 hours ending up with broken/missing/extra parts. MY2018 Golf R Mk7.5 right hand drive. Took me about an hour, got the part from Aus Auto Store for about $AUS85 delivered. Most time was spent putting the door panel back on. The only thing that I would say is that when removing the switch housing from the panel, pay attention to the 2 large clips at the front of the housing (closest to the hinges). They're not shown in this vid, but releasing them and then pushing the front of the housing up is the trick. The vid from the European guy shows this more clearly. Thanks Luke, excellent log.
I reckon the same has happened to the drivers switch on my 16 MK7 Golf. It's not doing the full auto down, but will still go down, but after watching your video, I noticed the switch was very loose
Thanks Luke, awesome video. I changed my switch today, the "long" way so definitely worth taking a little extra time to do the job properly. I did manage to do it without disconnecting the other wires by having someone hold the door card upside down while I removed the switch casing which is fiddly. Thanks again
I googled the average cost of replacing your car door window switch, and it can range anywhere between $200-$300, depending on your car make and model. The fact that you can purchase a new switch for ONLY $30, and do it yourself and SAVE hundreds of dollars is AMAZING! And it’s CLEARLY so easy (THANKS TO THIS TUTORIAL 😉)
Thanks Luke, for basically the only MK7 switch replacement on YT (in English). Watched 3 times and still not looking forward to this, like you, very much dislike plastic clamps and the fear going too far. Same as you, I like to roll my window down when driving, and other 3 are in perfect condition from little use. Appreciate the close-up of broken switch. This would be 200-250 at a Shop, but the BS, make appointment, drop-off, get a ride, get a ride to pick-up, pay the man.
Thank you for watching my video I really appreciate it! I tried to make the video as thorough as I could while capturing the right angles to make it easy to follow along! Thanks again for the comment and sharing your experience! 🤙🏼🙌🏼❤️
Works like a charm!! Thank you so much for posting this. Have an Alltrack 2019 mark 7.5 Had some more wire to disconnect, mostly some ambiance lightning inside

Hey, YOU made my day .. new switch in Vw Golf Sportsvan, all okay. Best tutorial in TH-cam for this problem. Big Thanxs.
Hi i just put a new master switch and when i push the button down the glass goes down (it works for all) but for the up it doesnt work for any glasses (only from the master switch in the conductor side) can you help me please ?
I’ve never heard of that problem happening before. Did you make sure that all the wires are plugged in properly? Where did you get the master switch from?
I have vw touran 2017 model and only driver side window not working won’t go down kindly let me know any suggestions or guidance do you think that could be the switch or any fuse it was working fine yesterday but just today it’s stop working. Let me know thanks
its possible that the same thing that happened to me happened to you. if you watch the video closely it shows that all the switches work except for the driver side window. its the most used window so it makes sense that it breaks first. i replaced the whole switch, which I think is the easiest thing to do in my opinion. there is a link for the part in my description if you you would like to do it yourself! hopefully this helps! have a good day!
It might be possible, but you have to be careful that you don’t break the clips! I hope this helps, please consider subscribing I would really appreciate it! ❤️🙌🏼
I own a MK7 2017 VW Golf Wolfsburg Edition. Your video is like saying to get into the front door & driver seat of my car, I need to open the hatch, crawl through the opening smaller hatch between the seats, and then through the back seats into the front driver seat to start the car and then go somewhere. Why not open the front door and sit in the driver's seat, to go somewhere? A whole lot easier. There's absolutely no need to take off the door panel to carry out this small task. Insert a flat head into front end (nearest the door handle pull) in the underside of the switch casing cover edge. Push with a screwdriver gently, firmly until you feel the switch casing release from the clips. Be patient. Then pull up on the front side and the switch until it comes right out. I did it last night, it took me about 15 total minutes because I took my time, to take the switch out, put the new switch in and, I was done! Your instructions might attract more video likes, but it also increases the odds of breaking something else that is completely unrelated to the switch, and it'll take you a couple of hours to do that job if you're skilled. If not it may not happen very well at all and go south.
Thank you for giving me your opinion! I appreciate it. Your way does seem easier but in my video I preferred to do it the other way. I didn’t want to break the clips, it was something I’ve never done before so I wanted to do it the only way I knew how! Maybe you or I can make a new video that’s faster? 👍🏼
This is a great video, and I managed to save myself some cash thanks to you. I am very glad the part from China worked after all that 🤣🤣 Great video and easy enough to do.
I’m sure it was probably said but it when I bought my mk7 I guess the dealer tried to pry from the top and started at the bottom and left a bend in the plastic from a screwdriver I haven’t attempted yet I’d say use a plastic pry tool
Your welcome! I’ve noticed this is happening to a lot of people, thank you for watching and commenting. If you are looking to order the new switch make sure you look at the link in the description, It will be for a 2016 vw golf if that’s what you are looking for! ❤️🙌🏼🤙🏼
Just did mine yesterday, you can take it off on the door. No need to remove door panel. About a 5 minute fix. Too easy. And cheap replacement. VW wanted about 250, I spent 17 dollars.
Hi. I have a tiguan 2017 new model that looks like that. Also the same issue 2 of the 4 buttons not working but with the key it works. Can i remove the switch only without the entire panel door? And why did you disconnect all wires when you just wanted to replace the window one? Thanks
Thank you for commenting I really appreciate it! It might be possible that you can remove the switch only but it’s more likely that you can break the clips that holds the casing for the switches. for me personally, I was more comfortable taking off the whole door because it was easier to access. I didn’t want to cut any corners just to get the job done faster. I wanted to remove the door so I can replace everything and put it back to normal. Please consider subscribing it would mean a lot! 👍🏼❤️
Bro bro I’m having the same issue. Driver side doesn’t work. All the others do. I accidentally got snow in there one cold morning and my hands were too freezing to give a fuck in the moment so I dug what I could out. Few days later it stopped working. I’m not sure if this is still a master switch issue because that one doesn’t work but the other 3 do but there probably isn’t the physical damage like yours had. Mine is most likely an electrical situation. You think I should still be good ordering an assembly and that would prob a be the fix and not an overall electric overhaul? I’m so glad there’s someone who was in my same predicament so I could easily find this video.
there is no gaurantee if you switch it that it will work, but its better you try it than pay a mechanic hurdreds of dollars. I'm happy that my video has helped you in some way, it makes me happy! thank you!
Just fixed this same issue on my wife’s sportwagen with some help from this video, though I did have one clip on the door card that isn’t fully engaged, no matter how much I push on it. Thank you for the run through, saved a lot of money doing this!

There is other ways you can do it, but this way in my opinion your less likely to break something.

This is very ill-informed advice that will destroy the mounting clips for your door. Use the proper wedge tool to release the four round push-in clips as they are designed. Following Luke's method will most likely end with your tearing those clips apart. Their not showing it fully reinstalled is kind of a tell that they broke their tabs.
You can find the "door panel trim retainer clips" online from a few brands. Make sure you get those and the forked pry tool to properly remove the panel.
Luke also completely skips showing how they managed to get at the the very difficult to reach locking tabs on the body of the switch closest to the inside of the trim at 2:28. I had to use a hooked o-ring removal tool to push that tab in. Don't just force things like Luke is showing here.
Also, the red reflector doesn't have to be removed.
