A New Orleans icon who sadly passed in 2019. He had a totally unique sound and persona.
You've got to hear Dr. John & Rickie Lee Jones singing the Jazz standard "Makin' Whoopee" . Also for Female Fridays actress Michelle Pfeiffer's version.
He's the inspiration for Dr. Teeth on the Muppet Show.
They gave him a traditional New Orleans funeral procession when he was layed to rest

Dr. John was once arrested for playing on stage with a black musician (whose name I forget) because of segregation laws. He was quoted as saying "This is stupid because next week Ray Charles is playing so you are just going to have to arrest me again". He also used to be a guitar player until he had half a finger shot off so he switched to piano.
He was on the right side of history when it came to civil rights. Truly ahead of his times.
He played at my parents wedding - The New Orleans icon for sure!
Also, at his memorial, it was the most moving musical tribute I’ve ever experienced !

Another totally unique musician who never got the public recognition that he should have received, but had a hell of cult following.
On June 16, 1973, Dr. John was the guest artist on American Bandstand. When he came on TV, he played this song. At that exact time, I was putting on a tux for my wedding! My brothers and I all got a big kick out of the "cosmic message" that was being sent. I still laugh about it to this day every time I hear this song. Love Dr. John and all his music. Another great reaction from Jay and Amber. BTW in 6 months my wife and I will celebrate our golden anniversary - so I guess it was right place AND right time. Peace out.

The good Doctor passed away in 2019. I was lucky enough to see him play twice here in Germany, the first time even with Johnny Winter. I miss him dearly.

Y'all should check out his song "Such A Night" he did with The Band on The Last Waltz! You'll absolutely love it and get to see Dr. John perform as well! I actually got to meet him at the buffet line backstage at a Hot and Spicy Food Festival where he was one of the headliners and my little college band was playing one of the small side stages. He was gracious as could be, and fairly blown away that I addressed him by his given name, Mack Rebenak. I learned that from The Last Waltz movie - Y'ALL SHOULD ABSOLUTELY DO THAT MOVIE, BTW!!

One of the first concerts I ever went to when I was in high school. Dr John, along with BB King, Buddy Guy, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Not bad for one night of music. I'll never forget it. He's one of the greats!

Aaron Neville is also from New Orleans. He did some beautiful solo work, collaborations with his siblings (The Neville Brothers) and some gorgeous duets with Linda Ronstadt. 🌺✌️

Dr. John ( Mac Rackenback) is New Orleans music royalty. Have seen him too many times to count. We sadly lost him about 3 years ago. Always a great show. He is also the inspiration for Dr. Teeth in the Muppets Band.

This is one of his very upbeat songs, but The Doctor can bring you DEEP into Swanp music and Voodoo mysticism. He was a greatly sought after musician.

When he mentions "Brain Salad Surgery" that was one of the greatest 70's albums by the group Emerson, Lake and Palmer or ELP - I think you'll really enjoy them ; ) A lot of these albums were meant to be listened to the entire side all at once - they told a story - the radio started isolating songs to play
They actually reacted to Karn Evil 9 first impression!! That one might have been a little much for them but I also think that they reacted to Lucky Man or one of the slower songs also!!

I was just going to suggest I Walk on Guilded Splinters! I’m not too familiar with Dr. John’s catalog, other than his hit single, but I came across that one a few years back, and was mesmerized by it!
Oh, I’d also suggest Iko Iko! In addition to his version, there’s a really cool version by the Belle Stars from the early 80s that’s a lot of fun!
This is the second time Dr. John is on your channel although it’s the first time he’s singing. He was playing piano in the Jeff Healy See The Light video.

Omg, Dr. John is an ICON!!! And when you ask for food suggestions, my first thought was beignets and chicory coffee at Café du Monde, but then I gotta ask if you've ever had beignets before? Because unfortunately for me, Café du Monde were my first beignets, and now no other s will ever live up to the fluffy, crispy, pillow heaven that is Café du Monde, and now I can only dream of going back for more!!! 🤩🥰

If you want a full on New Orleans reaction, look for the video for the Neville Brothers performing "Voodoo" at the legendary Tipitina's club (absolutely check it out while you're in town). It doesn't get much more N'awlins The Neville's are New Orleans royalty (you can also find videos of them performing with Dr. John) and you will love their funk/soul.

The Meters are the folks playing with Dr. John on this very song. George Porter Jr., the bassist for The Meters, plays at the Maple Leaf Bar in New Orleans. His drummer, Terrence Houston, is definitely a must-hear!
If you want to dip into another song from the Playing for Change organization, Dr. John played a prominent role in their version of "Iko Iko." I believe it was probably one of his final public performances.

Malcolm John Rebennack Jr., better known by his stage name Dr. John. Back in the day when I was first really getting into blues, New Orleans funk and jazz he was known as Dr. John the Night Tripper. He's been tight with all the greats, running the gamut from the Dead, to the Stones to Clapton to Leon Russel, going back to the days of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. He was the voodoo man who brought us New Orleans R&B mixed with psychedelic rock.
You guys are in for a treat in New Orleans:
Couple paths to follow:
1). Old time jazz: Preservation Hall (it is a tourist trap but unique and a must see stop)
Live Rock Music: Bourbon Street: Fantastic very small enclosed venues. Just follow the music. You’ll be able to float down Bourbon and slip into 10-12 places where live music will vibrate thru you while there. Lose yourselves…have a few drinks and rock out on the dance floors.
Lastly Food:
Many great places…be adventurous and hit dives for local cuisine. Fantastic!
Hit Jackson Square at night and visit a few Gypsies, street musicians, magicians. Don’t skip Cafe Du Monde for some hot chocolate and beignets.
Many memories of time while spouse in graduate school at Tulane.

Good you got to Dr. John (Mac Rebenack is his birth name). One of the most unique artists in history. He did his song Such A Night for The Band’s concert The Last Waltz. He and Rickie Lee Jones did a duet on Makin’ Whoopee for the soundtrack to Sleepless In Seattle. A couple of other New Orleans bands you should check out are The Neville Brothers (Fiyo On The Bayou and Voodoo are good choices) and The Meters which also has Art Neville one of the Neville Brothers. Their song Cissy Strut will get you for sure.
Nice rendition of 'Such a Night", but it wasn't "his song", though he recorded a version of it. The performance with the Band was awesome. The Drifters first recorded the song written by Lincoln Chase. My favorite take is Elvis Presley's...his first recordings after the army.
I was 8 when this song came out in 1973. It's a song I heard for YEARS on the radio when I was young. It definitely has staying power, since it's still a serious banger!

We listened to it in the late 80s as hip hop heads after rappers started sampling it - we'd seek out the original grooves

He also contributed to the Disney's 'Princess and the Frog,' shortly before he passed. I was first introduced to him when he hooked up with Leon Redbone on several recordings, including 'Frosty the Snowman' on the 'Christmas Island' album, and with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on 'It's All Over Now' from their 'Voodoo' album.
When you make your trip, try to catch Tuba Skinny; they play on street corners and often in bars and clubs. You can check out their sound on TH-cam.
Goddammit. I suggested this guy over and over for months. He is an amazing piano player, and by far his best song is "Such a night ". You must listen!

I was going to say something similar. N.O. is a great city, but has its problems. Crime is getting out of hand, so just be aware of your surroundings. Have a great time, eat a little of everything, and don’t be surprised by the characters you see!
I would be extremely careful. I was once a staunch defender of Nola, but I can no longer defend it. I haven't been in the city limits in over 2 years. I won't go. It's that dangerous.
@@dufrenedana1 wow that's scary! I went to nola years ago and stayed at hotel in the "safe square" around bourbon. Even 30 years ago, hotel staff showed me on a map the tourist "safety zone" heavily patrolled by law. Get out of this area, you're on your own. Hotel staff said if you go anywhere else take a legit cab there and back.
Being a small town girl, I listened and had a great time. Daytime cemetery tours, old house tour and even a ghost tour at night. All were with groups out of the safety square.
It's sad that crime has taken over the city.

A FEW parts of the city are dangerous. But generally not the Quarter and tourist areas - unless you wander out at 2 am in an unfamiliar isolated street. That's why it's such big news when there IS a shooting in the Quarter or downtown or uptown -because those areas are generally safer than others and usually don't suffer violent crime.
Dr, John, is a great character! He wanted to play guitar but had to move to the piano when he got a finger shot off during a backroom card game. I hope there is a biography of this man out there.
My wife and I were there not too many years ago. We love that city. Lisa actually lived there for a bit, but that was before Katrina. It's changed. However, as to your request, we all know about Bourbon Street, but that's not the good place. The really fun place - where the locals go - is Frenchman Street. It's what you're looking for. Another thing I'd recommend is taking a tour of a cemetery. The place we stayed hooked us up with a historian who walked us (and just us) through one. It was fun and very educational. I dont know about the temperament of the kids, but it's something to consider.
I'm from the UK, but I've been to NO three times now. It's one of my favourite places in the US. It's so different, full of fascinating things and the people are great. The crematorium tours are really good, but first just wander around the French Quarter. There are brilliant jazz bands on every corner. You can buy a beer or the beverage of your choice, and hang out just listening to them. Bourbon Street is pretty much a tourist trap these days, and a sleazy one at that. Don't bother, IMO. Check out Temperance Hall and Louis Armstrong Park where the first African American music in the US was heard (or so they claim!)
And Dr. John is part of that heritage. He played the best boogie-woogie around.

That was great. Took me back to high school days. I was fortunate enough to see Dr. John at a BB King blues Festival at the Hollywood bowl. some time in the early 2000s. There were a lot of other great artists there but today we’re talking about Dr. John RIP. Love you guys keep up the great work!

Malcolm Renneback (sometimes billed as "Renny the Writer") started writing songs as a teenager and had written HUNDREDS over a decade, before he created his "Dr. John Creaux" character and became The Voice of New Orleans. A showman among showmen.
You can see his concerts on YT, but unfortunately he passed a few years back. That said, if what they say about New Orleans is true, you might yet run into him down there, lol.
My suggestion for your next song is the positively eerie "I Walk on Guilded Splinters". Enjoy NOLA!
One of the biggest influence on New Orleans piano and songwriting was Professor Longhair, he influenced Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, just about any other piano player that came after him. He captured the heartbeat of New Orleans, he had a style all his own and he was a living legend. Just a few of his hits are "Big Chief", "Rockin' Pneumonia", and "Go To The Mardi Gras". He was one of many great musicians from the Gumbo State. Notable acts you can catch now are Trombone Shorty, and Galactic, who are incredible artists, you should react to them on your channel. I haven't heard this song in at least 40 years, wow! It's quite a statement about the music of the 70's that a great song like this could have been lost to me because it just got lost in the shuffle all the great music. Thanks for bringing this back to me I love it!
The Late GREAT Dr John RIP, love this tune from the master. They actually created a Sesame St Character called Dr Teeth based on this iconic man, also this song was featured in the movie Sahara.

Dr. John is so cool & I love your reaction! Another New Orleans favorite who you reacted to once before, and considered the inventor of New Orleans rock & roll, is Fats Domino. Many historians regard his 1949 hit "The Fat Man" as the first rock & roll single. His rolling piano style generated hits through the 1950's & early '60's including "Whole Lotta Lovin'", "I'm Walkin'", "Blueberry Hill", "Walking to New Orleans", and so many others. You can find them all on youtube. A couple fun facts about him: Domino heavily influenced Elvis Presley when Presley was first starting out. In fact Elvis referred to Fats as "the real king of rock & roll" after a 1969 concert. When Domino performed a European tour in 1962, he met the up & coming Beatles, who later said he was a big influence. You can hear Paul McCartney emulating Fats Domino's style in the Beatles hit "Lady Madonna". Finally, in 1957, Domino stated, "What they call rock 'n' roll now is rhythm and blues. I've been playing it for 15 years in New Orleans". 🙂 You'll love New Orleans!

And you really don't even have to spend time in the drunk...I mean French quarter to find it.

I LOVE Dr. John! I tried to get a local live music program to get him to my hometown (they had, after all, brought The Family Stone, Melanie, Taj Mahal, Ritchie Havens. . .) Sadly, the program started going the way of "tribute bands" instead of the real thing and I never got to see The Night Tripper. It is not the original version that played on the radio in my youth, but it will certainly get you in the New Orleans mood!
New Orleans artist Aaron Neville won a Grammy for his duet with Linda Ronstadt “Don’t Know Much”. The two are perfect together.

To get that New Orleans feel listen to the Neville Brothers - Yellow Moon album from 1989, specially the songs "Yellow Moon" and "Voodoo". Before the Neville Brothers were the Neville Brothers they were "The Meters" and had some great songs in the 1960's including the extremely funky instrumental "Cissy Strut" from 1969.

He was one of the great musicians of New Orleans and the world. I stole my brother's copy of the album Gris-Gris many years ago and grew up listening to Dr. John. Check out his piano work--tracks like 'Mess Around,' 'Iko Iko,' and my all-time favorite, 'Such A Night.'
While you're in New Orleans, visit some great venues like the Spotted Cat, Bacchanal, the Mother in Law Lounge, Tipitina's, Siberia . . . the list is endless :D Have fun, keep an eye open when you're out walking around, and enjoy all the wonderful music and food! NOLA is a great town.

Wowzy! This song has always been near the top of my playlist. Great for kitchen dancing and all around general fun. I was 13 when it came on the radio scene. Now at 62 I'm still doing the hitchhiker (dance move!) when I hear it. ♡♡

Dr. John did a fantastic version of "Season of the witch" for the Blues Brothers 2000 soundtrack, not that great a movie but a phenominal soundtrack. I urge you to check it out for a New Orleans playlist
His version of Take Me Out to the Ballgame is so good.
I was going to suggest the same. That version of Season of the Witch is just awesome, has that hypnotic beat going and all those instruments to pick up on and his unique vocals. so good.

I'm an Englishman but, for me, New Orleans is the birthplace of some of the world's greatest music. If you like funk, try The Meters. If you like piano, try Professor Longhair. If it's jazz check out Tuba Skinny. You can't go wrong with anything from that great city.

More New Orleans-themed music: "Walking to New Orleans" by the legendary Fats Domino. Also, Al Hirt was not a singer, but he was a legend with the trumpet and had a number of instrumental hits like "Java" "The Green Hornet Theme" and "Cotton Candy." His work on The Green Hornet is absolutely jaw-dropping. If you're going to New Orleans, both of those legends are worth a listen.
Louisiana native here. When you visit New Orleans check out Kermit Ruffins playing in a Louis Armstrong kind of vibe. He’s usually performing somewhere around town.
Dr . John was a phenomenal piano player and that’s not apparent on this song. You should listen to songs from his Gumbo album: Tipatina, Iko Iko, Mess Around, Junko Partner.
Also, Professor Longhair who wrote the book on New Orleans style piano.
Check the great Allen Toussaint. The entire Southern Nights LP is fantastic. Allen wrote so many amazing songs (and produced) but he was also an unbelievably great piano player and singer. Dr John worshiped Allen. Both RIP!

I saw them both, along with the Neville Brothers and several others at the University of New Orleans. It was a benefit concert for the homeless and hungry. All the money raised went to the cause. None of the acts got paid.
Thank you for reviewing Dr. John! His earliest stuff is Dr. John the Night Tripper psychedelic voodoo-inspired. His later recordings are more as a vocal stylist, but any era is killer. One of his most accessible songs maybe his version of Iko Iko. Thanks guys! You always choose such an interesting mix of music. Dr. John IS New Orleans.

The musicians backing Dr. John on this song is the legendary New Orleans Funk band The Meters.
Back in the 80s I saw Dr John playing at the festival outside and he put on a show. And it was absolutely crazy how the entire danced and had a spiritual uplifting experience. Amazing. Even I was dancing. How about that?
He helped so many musicians replace their instruments after hurricanes.
If you want New Orleans & Horns you've got to do Neville Brothers Yellow Moon ! The Horns in that song will put you in a trance. Trust me!

I live in New Orleans & have seen him live multiple times, he's amazing in concert!! "Such a Night" is another ya'll would love! He was a character & he LOVED performing!! His voice is UNIQUE!!

I have loved this song for decades. And sometimes assume, wrongly, that everyone has already heard it. Your dead-on reaction, was so refreshing! Stay as wonderful and Fresh, never change.
P.S. Dr. John has so many songs in his playlist, you could just grab anyone of them, and start to Boogie. He does a duet with another gent (sorry I cannot remember who). They had a battle of "The KEYS". See if you can find it. They were both dressed in tuxes, with long tails and Top Hats. And both were totally amazing. As are you Amber and Rob.

Classic funky blues swampy rock song- so fun to see you feeling it for the first time. I know it was hard to stay seated for this one.
Try some Dirty Dozen Brass Band- saw them at New Orleans Jazz Fest many years ago. On a side note: one of my students quit school despite our pleading, to go busk in New Orleans. She's done well for herself and although she travels a lot playing with different bands, she claims New Orleans as her home. The street musicians are where the heart and soul of the music scene often lies in the collaborations of various talents. Enjoy the music and the food. Ask the locals for a local place to eat.
A New Orleans icon that you should check out is Fats Domino. He was one of the most successful artists of the 1950's with songs such as "Blueberry Hill", "I'm Walkin'", and "Ain't That A Shame". He combined New Orleans Jazz with Rock and Roll. You both would really enjoy his music.
I just bought a 7 disc box set of his first 7 albums. I got a great deal and it is EPIC. Such a diverse repitoir and sound he had! Really enjoy it. You have to see the video of him as the Night Tripper during this time. Whole persona.
If you want natives from New Orleans how about “ Harry Connick jr” ! He’s a “Crooner”, jazz and sings songs from the 30s,40s and 50s. Rod will love him.

A similar gritty song, but with a much more prominent bass line is "Tuff Enuff" by The Fabulous Thunderbirds.
They're "Fabulous" because there already was a 1950s group called The Thunderbirds.
Besides being an iconic singer, Dr. John was a fantastic piano player. I had the pleasure of seeing him live and he was the real deal. Check out some of his instrumental songs such as "In a Sentimental Mood". Gorgeous!

I just listened to this album maybe three hours ago. There's magic in the air!
Some suggestions. Food: Irene's Cuisine, The Gumbo Shop, Cafe Fleur De Lis (breakfast and lunch). Music: The Spotted Cat Music Club, Maple Leaf Bar, Tipitina's. Hopefully you'll be able to see Doreen Ketchens playing clarinet in front of Rouse's on Royal Street. If you have time, take a cemetery tour and a haunted history tour. And just walk around the Quarter, you're liable to see a second line pop up anytime and a lot of good music from street musicians (be sure to tip them!)

We were walking in the Quarter during French Quarter Fest, and we were just stopped in our tracks by Doreen! Just reeled us in, mesmerized. If only you and your daughter are going, try out the streetcars. $3 a day per person for public transport. As a country hick, I love that we can ride pretty much anywhere when we visit. We love to take the bus to the art museum and best of all is the sculpture garden, free to wander through.

Another great song featured in the movie “Dazed and Confused” - a movie you really need to watch on your other channel. I first really noticed Dr. John in the film, The Last Waltz featuring the Band and their friends. Pretty good stuff.

Glad you finally visited the good Doctor. The Band's Last Waltz, the gift that just keeps giving, has a great number with Dr. John doing the song "Such a Night" with the Band. The song fits the evening perfectly and you get to see his cool, eccentric persona and great piano and vocals. And one of the greatest weekends of my life was spent in New Orleans, but it was in 1985, long before Katrina so I don't know many of the great blues bars I was at still exist, but I know the Old Absinthe House is still there, even older still, but I'm sure cranking out some great blues music, New Orleans style.
Yes... he was my friend. I helped open the first House Of Blues in Cambridge, Ma as well as Steven tyler's Mama Kin. He played BOTH opening nights. I loved him! I miss him and Leon
