Hi thank you for all the helpful videos! Love your channel. I’m moving to a new house & the kitchen has espresso cabinets and white quartz with bay window dining area. My current dining table is espresso color and rectangular; can I use it in this space with bay window & the dark kitchen cabinets?
@@israelhc8947 HI and thanks for joining! Why don’t you drop me a Hi at hello@lisaholt.com and that way i'll be able to answer your questions more easily.
I love that even though you are highly trained and educated in design, you give budget options. This is true interior design, dealing with the reality of where people are. I bet you don't expect everyone to throw out every single thing in a room so you can design it. You work from where they are. ::smile::
Boy, this was so refreshing to hear from an "adult' professional after landing on so many videos that I could not get through. I learned so much from this one. Thank you.
Thank you. That was a great starting point for me. Now, what I'd like you to cover sometime: 1) How to pick the design of the rug for the room and rest of your decor (aside from fabric, texture, and size, and how to make it go along with curtains 2) how to lay out furniture and other items in a room, 3) how to edit: how do you know when you have put too much furniture in a room? Or too little?? 4) how to draw all the colors together if you are using more than 1 monochromatic one and 5) how to accessorize a room, especially how to style entryway table, shelves, etc. THANKS!
You are so smart and experienced! Know what you are talking about and that is probably why you have so many subscribers in such a relatively short time! Wow! I never knew there was so much to rugs.
i made the mistake of getting a rug that was too small for an already smallish room. when i replaced it with a larger black and white zebra stripe rug, omg, it changed the size and personality of the room. so much better, now! just found you...really enjoying your videos and in agreement with your advice.

Hi Lisa, I’d like to see a video for all things living room seating: what to look for in a couch/sofa/sectional etc, material, what styles to match, all that. I know your insight would be so helpful!
Great request! I’ll add this to the list of videos to come! Have you joined the list for the Design Club yet? rugs! i wasn't sure if i wanted to dive into that subject. it never seems as fun as some of the other design subjects....but you made it so informative (as usual) and ...never boring. thanks Lisa
Love that you’ve said an area rug isn’t required under a dining table 😊. I just can’t imagine trying to cleaning up after the spills and general debris that would be inevitable, so thank you for saying it isn’t required! Do you have any videos that deal with rugs in awkward spaces? I have a smallish room that’s part corridor from hallway to kitchen, with the walkway essentially a diagonal across one edge of the room. It’s a really unbalanced space with a single door on one side and a double door sized opening on the other in the wall. The room is small so furniture is just pushed against the walls .... it’s really a troublesome space that’s giving me a headache! Any guidance on how to find a solution and make the space feel from content in videos would be amazing! Thank you ☺️
Suze!!! I TOTALLY get this - depending on your situation, some pieces just don't make any logical sense! 🙌🏻 An area rug under a dining table is a perfect example! 😂💖 As for the awkward spaces, I don't have a video on that topic yet - but I'll totally put it on my list!! 💚👍🏻 I'd love to do an awkward spaces series - everybody ones got a few of them! 😂💚 Thanks for this suggestion, and thank you so much for watching! Hope your week is off o a fabulous start! 🥰
Lisa you are delightful. I just bought a new home. It's a lovely home and I've just discovered you on U Tube. I LOVE your videos. Your are extremely informative and I appreciate you sharing all your design information. Thank you.
Love this week’s video! I am having the open concept room issue, and you’re the only person who has said the rug needs to be larger than the furniture placement. Everyone else says you can put just the front get of your furniture on the rug, and to me that has never looked right! Thank you for covering this subject!
Lisa. Thanks so much for your content and for sharing your talent. I really enjoy watching you and anyone who has not only talent but EXPERIENCE and who does not feel threaten by sharing their pro-tips and resources.
Melissa!!! I am so happy to hear this, I LOVE knowing I can give you design tips for your first home through these videos!!! BEST FEELING EVER!!! 🤩💕 Thank you so much for all the support, it really means a TON to meee!!! 😘
Super, totally comprehensive video. Enjoyed that ! I had my carpet supplier do me a couple of big area rugs. They just put the edge on them and they look great. I must get the under-pads for them though. Thanks Lisa.

This is a great video thank you for all the tips Lisa! I have one question, what is the rule for area rugs in open plan living rooms (with 3 functions: kitchen, dining and sofa/TV) that aren't big spaces. Do you keep to just one area rug where the sofa & coffee table are? And do you still make it around 6inch wider on each side of each piece of furniture going on it? Or can the area rug be a little bit smaller?
Great video addressing the size, functions, and materials of area rugs. I’d like to hear your thoughts on the relationship between the rug and the type of flooring (material and color of the floors) and room decor. This has more to do with style than function, perhaps, but I’m often conflicted about whether I should choose a rug that contrasts with the floors and really stands out, or something that’s more subdued and doesn’t draw much attention and basically just serves the functions you described in this video. My furniture pieces are very simple (clean lines, mostly solid colors), which I complement with colored pillows, throws, and other accessories. I feel in my case the rug could go either way so it’s difficult to make up my mind. Any tips?
I personally like textured area rungs vs. ones with big patterns, although it sounds like your space could handle it. If you want the rug to be the focal point, pick something with lots going on. If you've got other things art, etc that you want people to focus on, keep it quieter...Hope this helps, and we’d always love to see the before/after shots at hello@lisaholt.com!
Shivani!!! YAYYY I win!!! 😆🙌🏼 This makes me so happy!!! 🥰 Welcome to the channel, I am SO glad that you are part of this FUN community!!! 🥳🎉 I can't wait to hear your feedback on all my future videos!!! Thank you SO MUCH for this sweet comment, thanks for saying hiiii!!! 😘💖🤗
Ingrid!!! Rugs are TOUGH to get right - you'd never guess it but it's true!! 😂💜 So glad I could make this topic fun!!! 🥰 Thank you so much for this super sweet comment, and hope you're having a fabulous Thursday!! 💕🙌🏻
Love your content & useful tips, Lisa. My son & his wife just bought their first home: a 1913 2-story: so different from my mid-mod ranch! I cant wait to share your wisdom with them.
I'm just adoring you! Watched about 10 of your videos just this morning. I have all hardwood on the first floor and do have a more open concept. I was the one that mentioned a few minutes ago in a different one of your videos that I decided on a less expensive couch and went with the Soderhamn corner sectional which seats 6 comfortably vs. my destroyed RH. I thinking going with a hide rug at an angle (to warm up the space) as I have one in my entry and it's bullet proof with my animal!! Essentially, I would try to get a very large one and angle it as I don't want a sectional, a square coffee table and a large area rug that is semi square/rectangle. I'd just place it at an angle. We are empty nesters so two ppl living in a large home. However, being raise a Vegan I struggle with it!!! My husband purchased our entry hide rug 8 years ago and it is completely indestructible and I morally struggle with it, but holy cow :) it's been a trooper. We were fortunate it did not cigar and had no patching. I just don't know a decent vendor I can get one from that won't cigar and won't be patched on the top surface and my husband doesn't recall where he got it. Perhaps you think I might just go with a basic rug that mimics the same shapes of the rest of the furniture? Do you know a reputable vendor for cowhide rugs?
Hi Francesca thanks so much for your kind comments! I'm so glad you've joined the channel! I know what you're saying about the cowhides, so you'll one want to stick to an American supplier. They have bigger hides than European suppliers. You could also consider a fake one, several of the vendors at the end of the rug video will carry the faux version, however, in my experience, they don't last as long.
Thanks for making this video! I was completly lost with this topic and not able to choose a rug because of missing one information - what's the right size? Thanks for helping me with your instructions, now I can go to the shop and buy a new rug that will really fit my living room!
Very informative. I hope you do a video on how to choose style/ color / materials / design of Carpet for people living in an apartment like in NYC thank you so much!☺️
Oooh Jerry I love that idea!! 🥰 I'd definitely love to talk a bit about apartment specific design...I have videos on rentals and videos on small space but not every apartment falls into those categories!! 😂 I'll put it on my list for sure - thanks for watching, and thanks for this fabulous idea!! 🤩💙
LOL B!! 😆 Just telling it how it is!! 😂😂 I'm SO glad I could clear a couple of things up on this HUGE topic - choosing a rug is NOT easy!! 💜 LOVE hearing that these videos are helping you guys...absolutely makes my day!! 🥰💚
Another valuable video Lisa 🥰😄 We move frequently and it’s always to newly built apts with open floor plan designs usually in the same square footage. I’m feeling brave now to shop for an appropriate synthetic area rug to define the living room space 🤞 You’re awesome ♥️♥️
You’re awesome too, deft! When you move a lot, it’s hard to make commitments… Consider getting an area rug that’s cut to the size you need from wall-to-wall carpeting. This will be an expensive, wear well, and won’t break your heart if you have to lose it for the next place🙌🏻👍🏻😘
Great job on a big, touchy and OFTEN botched subject! I agree..... NO carpet in the dining room. Just put the felt pads on the bottom of chairs and they will not clank and scratch and most importantly - glide you right into that gourmet meal.
Thank you, Lisa!!! I would like you to talk about picking rugs for certain rooms. I am in the middle of choosing a rug for my office, but my artwork is off from my rug... Back to the drawing board.
Question... do you have any suggestions for a smallish room with a 6’1” grand piano? Should I allow for extra space around the piano, materials, etc...
Hi Lisa, thank you for all the good advice you are so generously giving and all the top quality videos! I was looking to find a video on natural wood versus laminated flooring options but didn't find. Have you covered the topic?
La Marina!! AMAZING question, I am actually going to cover this in the Dezign Club!!! 😉 In the club, I will be doing TONS of specific design deep dives, project tutorials, webinars, and SOOO much more on there - you don't wanna miss it!!!! 😍👏🏼 Send me your email here www.lisaholt.com/thedezignclub and I will send you all the details!!!
Ive been watching a couple of your videos. Aside from the actual information you provide, i think the WAY you communicate is outstanding. Keep it up. Appreciate it. Already subbed.
YAYA thank you so much for subscribing Abdul!!! 🥳💙 SO glad you are digging all these videos! Your support means the absolute WORLD to me, I am always here to help solve all your design dilemmas!!! 🤗
Oh Venni!! Of course!! ❤️❤️ I am so happy that you found these tips helpful, that's what I'm here for!! 😋 Thank you so much for watching and for allll the support!! 💕🥰
As usual great video packed with super useful info and your lively and humorous presentation! Rug shopping for me is a complete nightmare so this has helped calm me down. Thanks Lisa!
Enjoying the videos. Would love to hear more about decorating with a grand piano as you did here. I've got one and once it's in place, not something you should move without calling the pros. Getting ready to move the grand to her forever home soon. I bet you've got some ideas or maybe a future video. Thanks !
Oooh S this is a GREAT question!!! 🤩💚 Do you sending it to my Q&A box at www.lisaholt.com/q-a-submission so I can get it on my list? 👏🏻👏🏻 I think this topic could work really well in a future Q&A video!! 🧡 Either way, I'll do my BEST to get back to you over there...thank you so much for this FABULOUS suggestion! 💕🥰
Great tips and info, Lisa. I'm feeling torn about adding rugs in our 650 square foot condo. We installed beautiful wood-look floors, which made it look so BIG! What are your thoughts on keeping small spaces with wood floors bare? Would that be an interesting topic?
Yay!!! 🙌🏻 So glad you enjoyed the deep dive on rugs!! 🌟 Such a fun topic!!! Thanks for this sweet comment, and thank you for being a part of my youtube family! 🥰💖 Hope you're having a fabulous week so far!! 😘
my kids grew up on wool Karastan's Axminister rugs, very cleanable and never really had a issue. On hard floors you need a good size rug that goes under the Furniture and never use a non skid pad under it , its very hard on wood and even natural tiles . If you are putting a rug on top of wall to wall, don't go under the furniture because the legs will sink into the carpet below and the rug will buckle. Most affordable rugs today are all synthetic
Oooh Calif!! Karastan Axminster is a FABULOUS brand!!! 🤩 Great choice! 💚👏🏻 I LOVE hearing what works for you guys in your homes - keep the tips coming!! 🌟🌟 Thank you SO much for supporting my channel with thoughtful comments like these - it means the world!! 💙🥰
Your videos are turning up at just the right time for me. Question:: do we extend the rug under the TV cabinet stand that is against a paneled wall or just under the seating /sofa/ armchairs?
great information. Could you go deeper into rug placement. How wide should a stair runner be? How large should a rug in a dining room be? How much rug should there be around a bed?
Great questions Victoria! I think he would really love the new design club that I am in the middle of creating… It won’t be ready until December January, however it’s going to have all these questions answered and a Tunmore stuff that I think he will love! Go to www.lisaholtdesign.com to at least get on our emailing list! 🙂
Awww Jukes!!! YOU rock!! 🧡🌟 Thank you for always leaving me such sweet comments!! 🥰 You guys make my night with all of your kind words - thank you so much for supporting my channel...it means the world!! 💙😘
Awesome informative video Lisa! I just bought two jute rugs and I am thrilled you gave them a thumbs up 👍. I love all your videos.. you give so much great information! You do a fantastic job making videos.. you are to the point and captivating.. I am happy I found your channel 😊
Love your videos. Would love to hear your ideas for taking rugs people have and using them in different ways to achieve the kind of defining of a seating area you speak of -- sometimes one can put a very large inexpensive sisal down and layer a couple of smaller kilims over them or European-style kind of overlap and patchwork a few together to fill that large area. Or use some thin cotton rugs that are inexpensive and put a good wool rug that may not be big enough on it's own over that base . . .I'm sure you would have a million ideas -- and I would LOVE to hear them:)
I love your videos, very informative and helpful! If I an ask one thing, turn down the music you have playing in the background just a bit, I almost feel like you're having to turn yourself up to speak over it
Such great info! Do you recommend carpeting on stairs? Any tips for carpet design on front hallway stairs? I like designs but might it look too busy? I know it must depend on what else is going on in the front hallway and adjoining rooms. Thank you for your help!
Hi! What is your suggestion in a great room where the dining table, living room and kitchen are all in the same room? Do you suggest a rug for the dining table and for the living room? Or is that too much?
Yes, absolutely! Be sure to check out my Transitional Style deep dive video, and make sure you're signed up for the club, at the dezignclub.com, which will have tons more that can help!
Your a star! Love, love, love that you shared this information. Please help. I have soft fir floors, a chunky black farmhouse table and modern black leather dining chairs with heavy black moulding. Should I use a rug to anchor and protect floors? Think of going with a burnt orange sisal to match floors. What are your thoughts?
Make sure the rug will be big enough to hold the chairs when they’re pulled away from the table, and that they move smoothly on the carpet itself. Otherwise sounds great!
Hi Lisa, thanks for the great info. My living room butts into my kitchen, so there's a bar top and stools "in" my living room. Do I want the area rug under the bar stools or just up to the bar stools? My living room furniture is only 2' from the bar stools (total room width is a little over 13'). Thanks for your great insights!
WOW what a cool space Alesha!!! 😱💖SUCH a fun combination with the kitchen and the living room!! 🙌🏻😁Why don't you shoot me an email over at hello@lisaholt.com and we can figure out what works best with your floor plan!!! 💕👍🏻💖
Just stumbled upon your channel and I’m so glad I did! Love all your tips and tricks! Hopefully a quick question, what are your thoughts on a rug over carpet? Is that a ‘no-no’?
Hi Lisa, thank you for sharing this tips. Can you also share some tips for people who hates rugs? How can you define the areas for dining-living combination without using an area rug? Reasons for avoiding rugs for me are: I have 2 medium long hair cats and asthma and dust allergy. Thanks!
Love your channel Lisa. If your sofa is against a wall (small room) do you put the rug all the way against the wall or just enough so the rug goes underneath the front legs of the sofa? So confusing.
Tthis is the one place you can cheat a bit… The rug should be 3/4 underneath the sofa, you can give it a little space at the back as the sofa is against the wall. However, if you have end tables, make sure they are completely on the area rug.
Hello. I discovered your channel yesterday and I'm thoroughly enjoying it! Been putting off area rug purchasing because I didn't know what sizes so this vid was perfect. On to a question for area rugs in dining room. Do you add 6" with chairs pushed in or out as if being sat in? Thanks so much Ms. HOLT. 😊
Hey there! Welcome to the channel! This is a great question… Do you want to pull the chair back so that someone will be seated in it and then give yourself 4 to 6 inches beyond the back leg. This will prevent you from falling partly off the carpet when dining.😄
I love Love LOVE your content Lisa!!! So clear, so concise, so knowledgeable and it's all so easy to understand! The background music in your last few videos has been a little distracting but I am SO happy I subscribed! Keep it up!! =D Would love your design tips for inexpensive kitchen upgrades.

Love this week’s video! I am having the open concept room issue, and you’re the only person who has said the rug needs to be larger than the furniture placement. Everyone else says you can put just the front get of your furniture on the rug, and to me that has never looked right! Thank you for covering this subject!
Yeah, that's just bc they don't know about my FAV tip on how to get them bigger ;)
Lisa. Thanks so much for your content and for sharing your talent. I really enjoy watching you and anyone who has not only talent but EXPERIENCE and who does not feel threaten by sharing their pro-tips and resources.

I'm thrilled too! LOL
Super, totally comprehensive video. Enjoyed that ! I had my carpet supplier do me a couple of big area rugs. They just put the edge on them and they look great. I must get the under-pads for them though. Thanks Lisa.

How refreshing, finally someone who breaks down the rug world! Super informative, thank you!
YES! So glad I know I can help!😊

Wow, so many things I didn't even think of including a rug under a piano bc of the acoustics.
My husbands a keyboardist ;)
Omg!!! The best design channel !! And I have heard a lot of them and never ended up subscribing to any.. Lisa you win!!
You crack me up! 😄 I feel like I've done rugs all wrong for years. Thank you!
WhooHoo! So glad to know I’ve helped!
You could also consider a fake one, several of the vendors at the end of the rug video will carry the faux version, however, in my experience, they don't last as long.
soo helpful!!!
Yay!!!!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
Thanks for making this video! I was completly lost with this topic and not able to choose a rug because of missing one information - what's the right size? Thanks for helping me with your instructions, now I can go to the shop and buy a new rug that will really fit my living room!
Thank you, I learned a lot about how to choose the right carpet!
Lisa. You are awesome. I'm so glad I found you!
Hi Shellsea! Yay! I am too! I’m so glad you’re joining us, there’s LOTS more coming!
@@LisaHoltDesign We're closing on our first house in a few weeks so I'm soaking it all in! I'll be anxiously awaiting :)
This was totally helpful & enlightening! Lol, “dinky ass rug...” 😝makes sense 😋👍
LOL B!! 😆 Just telling it how it is!! 😂😂 I'm SO glad I could clear a couple of things up on this HUGE topic - choosing a rug is NOT easy!! 💜 LOVE hearing that these videos are helping you guys...absolutely makes my day!! 🥰💚
Another valuable video Lisa 🥰😄
We move frequently and it’s always to newly built apts with open floor plan designs usually in the same square footage.
You inspired me. The topic is intelligible, give knowledge informative.
Thank you.
Great job on a big, touchy and OFTEN botched subject! I agree..... NO carpet in the dining room. Just put the felt pads on the bottom of chairs and they will not clank and scratch and most importantly - glide you right into that gourmet meal.
Yes! Absolutely.. thank you for watching and for the compliment!!! Rugs can be TOUGH! ❤️❤️
Short, smart, and concise! I love yours videos!
Alejandro!! I am SO glad you are enjoying the videos - even the throwback vids!!! 🤪😂 LOL thank you so much for supporting the channel!!! 💕🥰❤️
It makes me so happy when you post new videos!
Thanks so much for watching and being a part of my channel, there’s lot more fun stuff coming!
Thank you, Lisa!!! I would like you to talk about picking rugs for certain rooms. I am in the middle of choosing a rug for my office, but my artwork is off from my rug... Back to the drawing board.
That's a great request Stacey! 😊 I'll add it to my list!
Carpet tiles are a great solution for the dining room!
So true! I absolutely love them, and use them at least in one space and almost every project I work on! 👍🏻😘
Question... do you have any suggestions for a smallish room with a 6’1” grand piano?

As usual great video packed with super useful info and your lively and humorous presentation! Rug shopping for me is a complete nightmare so this has helped calm me down. Thanks Lisa!
You are so welcome 🙏🏻 thanks girl watching and commenting 😘😘😘💕
I LUV plain wood floors, and could live rug free NP! If it looks good, keep it that way!
Hi Lisa, What a great amount of information you gave us. I really enjoyed this session and I sure do appreciate all your knowledge♥
Yay!!! 🙌🏻 So glad you enjoyed the deep dive on rugs!! 🌟 Such a fun topic!!! Thanks for this sweet comment, and thank you for being a part of my youtube family! 🥰💖 Hope you're having a fabulous week so far!! 😘
I love your channel-your personality is everything!!
Awww this just warms my heart Susanne, thank you!!! 🥰 I truly don't know what I'd do without you guys - you ALWAYS brighten my dayyyy!!!! 🤗👏🏼💜💜
my kids grew up on wool Karastan's Axminister rugs, very cleanable and never really had a issue.
You are absolutely fantastic! I am so happy to have found your channel. Your tips are fabulous!!
Yay! Thank you SO much for your kind comment and thanks for joining my channel!!
Your videos are turning up at just the right time for me. Question:: do we extend the rug under the TV cabinet stand that is against a paneled wall or just under the seating /sofa/ armchairs?
In this case you can get away with just the seating area...
great information.
Love that idea for area rugs. 👍

I'm so glad you love the deep dives! Theres more coming...
@@LisaHoltDesign How can I get in touch with you about designing some rooms in my home?
Love your videos. Would love to hear your ideas for taking rugs people have and using them in different ways to achieve the kind of defining of a seating area you speak of -- sometimes one can put a very large inexpensive sisal down and layer a couple of smaller kilims over them or European-style kind of overlap and patchwork a few together to fill that large area. Or use some thin cotton rugs that are inexpensive and put a good wool rug that may not be big enough on it's own over that base . . .I'm sure you would have a million ideas -- and I would LOVE to hear them:)
I love your videos, very informative and helpful! If I an ask one thing, turn down the music you have playing in the background just a bit, I almost feel like you're having to turn yourself up to speak over it
I totally got that feedback on a few videos and have since definitely turned it down! Thanks for the feedback
I just found your channel today.
Extremely helpful.
Love every video.
Hugs from South Africa!
Yay! Thank you so much for your kind comments and for joining us!
Thank you Lisa. Great tips ! Much appreciated.
You are so welcome!
What is the BEST synthetic rug? One that will hold up but mimic wool???
is polypropylene the same as nylon?
Betty, Are you in the Dezignclub? We're going over that very situation in a masterclass coming up next week! www.thedezignclub.com
I shouldn't have to join the club to get a simple answer. We youtube subscribers gave you the platform when we subscribed and "thumbs up" your videos
Hi Lisa, thank you for sharing this tips. Can you also share some tips for people who hates rugs? How can you define the areas for dining-living combination without using an area rug?
Reasons for avoiding rugs for me are: I have 2 medium long hair cats and asthma and dust allergy.
Thanks!
I hit the bell! 🥳 Great presentations, love your enthusiasm & education. I look forward to the next episodes. 👋🏼
YAY!! 🤩🙌 I am so glad you are enjoying the videos, can you tell I LOVE making them?! Thank you for watching and for the sweet comment 🥰 💞
Very thorough and comprehensive. I learned so much. Thank you!
WhooHoo! So glad to know I’ve helped! It’s so much fun answering peoples’ questions! I’m so glad you’re joining us, there’s LOTS more coming!
This channel is very informative.
Thanks for the very informative video! I feel much more prepared to choose the right rug for my space 💪
Yay! SO glad I know I've helped!! Thanks for being a part of my channel!
Can you put a rug in a bedroom if it has carpet? Or would that be werid???
I love Love LOVE your content Lisa!!! So clear, so concise, so knowledgeable and it's all so easy to understand! The background music in your last few videos has been a little distracting but I am SO happy I subscribed! Keep it up!! =D
Would love your design tips for inexpensive kitchen upgrades.
I'll talk to the team about the music, thanks for the heat's up! Great request! I’ll add this to the list of videos to come!
Thank youuuuu!!! ❤
