    I'm on week 4 and Sertaline has helped a lot. I went through very bad anxiety for months, I was terrified or everything and had no motivation to do anything as it would just make me more stressed. My advice to anyone about to take it or going through their first week is the following: Avoid researching and reading people's experiences as this will make you more anxious, especially in the first two weeks. Everyone reacts differently to this medication, but an increase in anxiety/depression is very common and reading about bad experiences while you are in such a bad place will only make it worse. Also factors such as age, gender etc. do play a role on how you will react on this medication.
    Let the medicine work and be patient. My severe anxiety is now gone (mood has also improved, but I am hopeful it will get better). I actually started a new job at week 3 and there is no way I could have coped without the medication. I am more calm and although situations are still worrying/stressful, I have no severe reactions and it's the normal levels of stress/worry of a new job, which is expected.
    Now for my personal experience (please remember, this is an individual experience and it doesn't mean that you will also have the same problems/side effects):
    My doctor decided to go for 100mg because I told him that I was starting a new job in three weeks and he thought a high dose will work faster; this was a bad idea and I only lasted for two days on that dosage.
    I felt extremely anxious, I could not sleep, my vision was blurry, my pupils were dilated and I was severely depressed in the evenings. I called him and asked to have the dose lowered to 50mg which made me feel better (at least I was functional and I could work/interact with people). I only had "toilet problems" the first day and I was feeling nauseous for a week with very low appetite. I nearly gave up on it but decided to carry on. It was the probably the worst week of my life.
    The worst side-effect for me, currently, is insomnia; it is getting better but I am usually wide awake at 3am not being able to go back to sleep regardless of what time I go to bed. So I am currently going to bed at 9pm so I can at least get about 6 hours of sleep. I can then catch up a bit in the weekends as I feel sleepy again around 7am, so I sleep for a couple more hours. Thankfully, I can sleep very quickly when going to bed, it's just that it doesn't last long.
    Lastly, it did affect my sexual health: libido is lower and I find it more difficult to achieve orgasms, but this is getting better. They say that this may last for as long as you are taking the medication and in some cases in can be permanent with SSRIs. Fingers crossed it won't be the case for me.
    Breathing exercises have really helped, my therapist recommended these: Play some relaxing musing and breathe deeply while thinking the words rhythmic (inhale deep), soothing (hold your breath) breathing (exhale). Focus on the breathing and even count it - any bad thought that pops in your head, label it as a bad thought and place it in an imaginary box. I know it may sound silly but it did help a lot.
    I was very lucky in the sense that my partner was extremely supporting while I was going through this, my sister had also faced mental health problems in the past so she was aware of everything and called me every single day plus a few friends (and a colleague) have been on anti-depressants and seeing how well they felt after a few months gave me even more hope and positive thoughts.
    Hang in there and I hope you find the happiness you deserve.

    I’m on Day 27. I FEEL much better. My good moments outweigh the bad and I am finding it possible to focus on those positive moments and sit with them to have a bigger impact on my mind. As far as side effects: I feel cloudy headed - I do not feel quick and sharp, I also yawn a lot and hate leaving the warmth of my bed in the morning (usually pretty quick to get up), I also have noticed I get kind of a shy bladder in a public rest room which is comical but also annoying when I REALLY have to go.

    I went from 25mg to 200mg over a period of 9 months. Didn't get an increase in side effects, but when I went to 200mg, i had to go back to 150mg because I was feeling tired/sleepy all the time, but after a month, i went back to 200mg and I feel great. I do have periods where anxiety comes back, and meditation helps with that. Mindfulness meditation can train your mind to not dwell too long on thoughts, especially those that could trigger anxiety.

Feeling a little a anxious during the daytime but not as bad as I did when I had some major episodes of a anxiety attacks. I am hopeful. The medication seems to be working. Its going to take time. @Robbaco I’m 7 weeks in now and they have definitely helped. They’ve helped take the edge off and overall just feel a lot more relaxed each day rather than tensed up, anxious and worrying. Also helped me get really good sleep although I do feel a lot more tired in the day at certain points.
      The first 2 weeks were tough as I felt nausea almost all day every which stopped me eating and lost weight in this time (I’m already slim) but that went away pretty quickly after the 2 weeks and my appetite was back.

    • @jonmichael1515
      @jonmichael1515 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Robbaco no major side effects for me, only the first couple of weeks I just felt sick all day every day which wasn’t nice. It seems to affect a lot of people that way in the first 2 weeks but it does go. I’ve been hesitant for years about taking them, I was prescribed them before but I didn’t take them as I was concerned about side effects and how it would affect my mind, and my performance at work, but now I have started I’m glad I did. Different people react in different ways so this is just my experience. I was offered counselling too which I haven’t taken up yet, I’m a private person so don’t speak easily about things but so far I feel like the medication is enough for now. Reach out to your doctor and discuss your concerns with them. You don’t have to commit to taking the medication but it’s a good first step and it made me feel better for just taking that first step. I can only speak for me, but by reaching out and talking/starting medication it feels like I’ve taken control of my anxiety now rather than it controlling me which is a great feeling

    Weeks 1-2 no change mild tummy issues and a few heady heads.
    Weeks 2-4 huge improvement in mood felt really happy, calm and at peace zero anxiety and defo not depressed, for the first time felt present and had clarity.
    Weeks 4-5 unusually tired, low mood, some anxiety - switched generic brands from this period did some research and found tons of medical journals and patient groups where a change in generic caused a relapse which might be what’s happening with me or it could be that things are still adjusting either way that nice happy and safe blanket feeling seems to have sadly gone (shame because I felt amazing best I’ve ever felt so I really hope that returns soon) 😮

    I took sertraline and ended up in serotonin syndrome.... Suffered its effect for one year, developed a complex ocd, lost every good relationship!
    Now I am again on sertraline with amitriptaline. They no longer work! 2 months... No effect. I think I have grown immune to them.
    However the good part is.... I have become my own hero. Watched couple of Ted Talks on dealing with anxiety and depression. Made a lot of changes and am looking forward to a life worth peace. and yeah... I'm 17. Been depressed for 9 years.... Tried suicide 4 times. Haha... I was silly back then... Now even if I'm taking sertraline 100mg amitriptaline 50 mg without any improvement by them, progressively I am proving to myself that I love me and I am my hero and will be, I am my happiness and will be for the rest of my life. If there is God. I thank him for my struggles and for people like you to care for someone like us that you had enough courage to establish this TH-cam channel and videos.

    I'm now on week 5, almost 6. I've been dealing with some quite severe loss of appetite which has been quite challenging, but recently I've been starting to feel hungry at least some days, so hoping that it'll keep going that way. Unfortunately I've felt no real benefits of the medication, so I will now start working my way up to 100mg. Other than that I'm feeling about the same as when I started, so I'm just hoping that the side-effects of upping dosage won't be that bad. Thanks for this series, it's great to have something to come back to and see your progress aswell!

      @@zaxles I've been quite stable weight-wise this far, went up to 100mg one week ago, luckily my appetite seems to have stuck with me this time.
      As far as I understand usually the weight-gain comes after a more prolonged period (6-12 months) and is usually not that major.
      Quick clarification aswell: even though I experienced quite severe loss of appetite I did my best to eat as I did before, setting alarms to remind me, so I dont think I ate too much less than I did before most days (there were of course some days where I didn't eat, but those were present even before starting medication).
      Hope that might answer your question :)
      Let me know if there's anything else I can help with, always happy to discuss my experience.

However, I can definitely say that my mood has changed and little things don’t bother me as much now (probably because I’m out of it). I’m dreading another 3 weeks of feeling out of touch though. I used to sleep great. Never wake up. I cannot sleep at all now. And when I do, it’s awful sleep. Waking up every hour, every night. It’s very difficult especially since I do shift work for living.
    I’ve also noticed random bouts of intense nausea. They usually don’t last that long, but it’s extremely uncomfortable. I’ve had almost no appetite.
    Based on the last week I already think I’m going to week myself off and not get it refilled. I was hesitant to start medication because I am uncomfortable putting things in my body that I don’t need or know everything about. It freaks me out knowing that it’s altering brain. And now that I have all these side effects and it’s effecting my sleep I just want to give up and just deal with my anxiety symptoms myself like I always have. @@buzzdown418 There are many different drugs in the SSRI class of medication, speak to your gp about trying a different one as some people respond better some of the other ones while some people don't, there are literally hundred of different SSRI class meds out there and you may just not respond well to sertraline and perhaps you would respond well to Fluoxetine(Prozac) or escitalopram(Lexapro), if the sertraline is not working for you, you should try a different one.

    I am taking 25 mg PO once daily usually before bedtime. I'm on my 2nd week and it's hard to focus in school. I just do not have the motivation to do anything. NO MOTIVATION AT ALL.. I am struggling. I do not have a problem sleeping though. Is anyone experiencing this too?

    • @tttmarcel2777
      @tttmarcel2777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was fine on 25mg but I felt just like that on 50mg. If it's your second week, it isnt really adequate time for the medication to work. You may not believe this but they take about 4 weeks to work correctly. Also, do not double dose to 50mg by yourself as I thought both pills were equivalent(and it pissed my doctor off) I don't think it's the same but I just felt terrible when I took two pills. For some reason, taking one 50mg pill feels better, although it could be because I'm used to it. But yeah, dont double dose like ever.

      Jessa, Why waste money on anti-depressants which have side efects. I transformed my life a few years back. Reprogramme the firing of neurons in the mind [brain]. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing anxiety-stress. For a relaxed life without anxiety-stress sit on a chair, back erect, hands on lap with palms upwards, eyes closed, be still and observe your natural incoming--outgoing breath and body sensations for around 10-15 minutes. Be as still as possible. Many thoughts will come which is ok--slowly negative thoughts will reduce and your mind will relax with no desire for pills. Mind[brain] are reprogrammed. After 15 days slowly reduce medication dosage and after 20 days of daily meditation taper of completely because there will be no desire. Take only if you need. Best part is that mood swings also reduce. Avoid watching negative tv and mobile shows.. Do the above meditation daily twice without any doubts and enjoy life without medication. Best wishes. Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor-Teacher.

    I started zoloft a month ago and I'm on 25 mg I'm still anxious but the panic attacks subsided I have no motivation I know my psychiatrist is just going to want to bring my dose up but I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing and if bringing up the dose changed anything because I don't know if zoloft is supposed to help with the initial anxiety or just panic attacks

      I was prescribed sertaline for panic attacks and anxiety. One month is not enough for you to fully feel a change. My doctor told me this is a maintenance drug. That chemical has to build and your brain so at least 2 months or three you will be fine and feel a change. Understand how you feeling just give it some time. It does help extremely well for panic attacks. I haven't had a panic attack in so long I forgot what it feels like LOL

Good luck to you all ❣️

    I really don't like it when I put comments on here and get no response! But I'll persevere anyway! How high a dosage are you taking? I started on 25mg and then a few days later went up to 50. Four weeks later and I am on 100mg. Had quite bad side effects but only nausea, headaches and tiredness. Don't feel any improvement yet, but at least there is now some hope!

    Does zoloft have fewer side effects than Lexapro?

    • @AlexRobbMentalHealth
      @AlexRobbMentalHealth  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is probably best asked to your GP I'm afraid Ryan. They are both SSRIs so will have similar side effects but my understanding is that people respond differently to different SSRI medication. For example, someone might find Zoloft gives them terrible side effects but Prozac works well. If you have had a bad experience with Lexapro it might be worth seeing if you can give Zoloft a go.
