    Sir,
My wife has undergone cholecystectomy in the year 2016. All of a sudden in Sept 2024 she was admitted in hospital due to severe pain of stomach and nausea.
She was diagnosed for acute/ mild biliary pancreatitis and advised ERCP. It was done and plastic pigtail stent was inserted . As advised she has visited hospital after 15 days For stent removal by endoscopic method. The doctor said that every thing is normal inside and stent has already been releaed through stool. Is there anything to worry about.

How can this be done for elderly who is high risk for anesthetic?

    • @Froedtert

Hi Leena, thank you for your question. The anesthesia team always reviews the risks of sedation and accordingly, decides on the type of anesthesia to give if the ERCP is essential to do.

I had my gallbladder remove in october 2022. I ended up with a large bilary leak. I have a stent and was toldoctor who did the ercp, that the stent will need to come out in 6 weeks. I still have the stent and its been more than 6 weeks. I have a follow up appoinment with in in December. I 've been reading up on stents and come to find out that they need to be replaced. I had no idea that I would be going through this. I thought that once it comes out that's it. He never said anything about having to keep replacing the stent and wearing it long term, or mentioned if this was temporary. I guess I need to ask him when i see him in December. This is frausting.

I'm so sorry to hear that😢 I actually also had my gallbladder removed in 2022- November 17th 2022 to be exact I was in severe pain for over a year and kept going to the hospital many times, first they said it was acid reflex or gerd and then they said it was because I had peptic ulcers.. My common bile duct was clogged with gallstones and sludge I was in the hospital for a week. Now I didn't have any stents put in And forgive me if I'm wrong. I know very little about this, but isn't a stent put in If they are unable to control a severe bile leak?

For How many days stent can be placed in bile duct

The duration for how long a stent can be placed in the bile duct depends on the cause of the bile duct obstruction and the type of stent used. For benign causes, we generally place a stent made of hollow plastic tube (plastic stent) that is around 3.3 mm in diameter. As these stent tend to clog up soon, they need to be removed and/or replaced by 8-12 weeks. For malignant obstruction, self-expandable metal stents are placed (usually 10 mm diameter after expansion). These stents remain patent for a longer time and can be kept in place till the patient's life expectancy. On rare occasions, a potentially removal metal stent is used for benign obstructions where one would want to keep a larger diameter stent for 6-12 months to stretch the obstruction open.
