Thanks a lot for the video! It brought back so many memories of family trips. My parents always took us to Phar-Mor in Bloomington, IL. I actually still vividly remember the layout of the store and where a lot of the items were. You'd walk in through the double doors past the pop machines and if you walked to the right and all the way to the end you'd reach the video rental in the corner. Then directly to the left was the pharmacy and photo department. I remember there being an aisle right in the middle of the store that carried book and magazines on one side with toys on the other. Phar-Mor was where I first discovered Fresca in the vending machines and my sister and I always asked my parents for change so we could get one. I can't believe that no one ever moved into the old store in your video. It's great to see that old logo still visible as a relic of the past. Now, if you ever had any Ventures stores in your area, that'd be cool to see if there's still any physical evidence visible!
Phar Mor was my first job ever. LOVED that place, but my tenure there was short lived. I got hired around February of 1992. My store closed on January 2nd, 1993. Until about 2003, my parents were still using a lot of the decorations and wrapping paper they bought for dirt cheap when our store had its clearance sale.
I used to work at that location in the early nineties. It looks like they modified the right side of the store with some kind of storage rooms that weren't there...that was the shampoo and hair care aisle. On the left, those were the stairs that went to the offices. There were sixteen aisles in that place. One manager, two co managers, and seven assistants ran that beast. Five area managers, an office staff. Tons of people went out of work when the crap hit the fan. This store lasted longer than most, as it was a profitable unit. They moved it to Oxford Valley after closing this location.
There was one in Cherry Hill, NJ. It's long gone, but it was located on the same site as the Walmart (left side of the building). There was a Caldor or Bradlees on the right side of the Walmart.
You are so lucky to have found that store! My local Phar-Mor was a cornerstone of my childhood. I loved it. I still have my video rental card from there!
Didn't have any around where I live. I've heard of them though. Looked like a great store. Just keep thinking about Sears closing the Joliet store after I posted my video. I thought it was going to be fine. So sad. Thank you for another great video.
It was a real pleasure to show you this gem. A unicorn for sure. Had so much fun hanging out with you here and at the Ames in NJ, as well as the Pathmark & half-Ames in Fairless Hills. What an awesome day! Hope to see you again real soon! I have plenty more to show you in my area.
It was such a great day. Any time I have to spend with you and Pat is an honor. I love you guys so much. I guarantee I will be back really soon. Shooting for November.
Loved this one Wallie! I remember going to Pharmor with my parents as a kid. The one by me got knocked down 20 years ago, but the spot where it sat is still there to this day!
Hi wallie there was one of these at Mac in tire ( sorry about spelling ) center in Mc Candles twp. Near McKnight rd. & Duncan Ave , in Pgh . I know that store got turned into another store, but I didn't know that any were still closed & Empty & abandoned . Great find , great video as usual . Thank you Wallie. Be safe ,Be careful.
I miss phar mor! There was one in my local mall which also closed down years ago. I remember going there with my mom and shopping for school supplies, and they had goosebump books sold there. They also had the best selection of makeup before stores like Sephora and ulta existed. Love your shirt btw. I miss Ames and Hills also. All those discount stores were a big part of my childhood. My parents were older as I’m adopted, so on social security and a pension. Had to find discounts when possible!
Awesome video. I can't believe after 16 years something hasn't moved into that location. It's a big enough space to do one or two stores. Put in a CVS or Walgreens. Another thing I enjoy about your videos and those of your buddies is learning about new places and retail that is gone. I think Rite Aid might be next to join Phar Mor. Walgreens bought a lot of Rite Aids and are closing them or converting them. Looks like you had an awesome vacation with your bud Andy, seeing your friends, enjoying your favorite bands and doing tourist things. Thank you for taking time to do some awesome videos.
So the abandoned Kmart video you posted in Asheville, NC, the one you said gave you target vibes. The other part of the shopping center all the way down right hand side was once a phar mor. My parents would shop at Kmart then go grocery shopping and rent movies at phar mor all in one shopping center.
Such a cool day. We had one of the PharMor subsidiaries in my hometown, it was called The Rx Place. Seeing the commercial at the end, it looks identical inside as The Rx Place did. Takes me back... Great work on the video Wallie!
Interestingly, the Phar Mor location in Joliet, Il ended up being converted to a Big K, then was divided up amongst different retailers after that closed. I believe Dick's Sporting Goods occupies most of the orginal Phar Mor footprint now
That building has been abandoned as long as my brother has been alive and I'm only two years older than that Damn Great video! I was talking to my mum a few days ago and she was telling me all about how cool Phar-Mor was and how the Ollie's here in Johnstown was a Phar-Mor when she was a kid. And I showed her this video and she thought it was awesome you found this Again, great video!!

They already tried that in Wilkes-Barre Township, PA with another former Phar-Mor that was ALSO empty ever since the bankruptcy and liquidation sales. I gotta be honest and say that for what amounts to a "scratch and dent" offshoot of Sears their prices were WORSE than just stalking the clearance / closeout cycle at a normal Sears store. The prices were just laughably bad to me. Eddie Lampert ignored the lease they signed and closed that store a number of months ago. About 20 miles from that former Phar-Mor is a former Jamesway in Dunmore, PA which still had a visible label scar on the front of the building underneath the Big Lots sign they had put on there to when they opened it in that store. But they must've FINALLY pressure washed the facade and scrubbed it off of there a year or two ago.

After the buyout that became Vix, the advertising jingle was "Shop at Vix. Vix for savings and never pay full price again." I wish I knew u were coming out here I could have told u tons of places. In Philly and in Bensalem area
Used to work at that location in 1995. Only lasted 3 months there. They kept reducing my hours til the last paycheck I received was only 20.00. At that point I knew it was time to gtfo. Two of the managers there were decent guys. The third was a complete asswipe.
Gary Holt Toys "R" Us still remains strong in Canada. Although all the USA stores have shut down for the moment and they're focusing more on it's online ordering and selling, there are still stores going strong in Canada. I have heard that Toys "R" Us might be relaunched in the near future as its lenders are planning to relaunch the retail business of the store based on the brand's value. We'll simply have to wait and see what happens.
*I'm not familiar with this company. Never had any around me as I was growing up. We did have a Fay' s Drugs, which became Eckards. It may not be much longer before Sears and Kmart are both completely gone. Chapter 11 bankruptcy.*

There’s a abandoned Chinese place near the McDonald’s there . I wish I knew you were there I live 5 minutes there
Used to work at that location in 1995. Only lasted 3 months there. They kept reducing my hours til the last paycheck I received was only 20.00. At that point I knew it was time to gtfo. Two of the managers there were decent guys. The third was a complete asswipe.

Gary Holt They are might have smaller stores maybe instead of big ones.
Sixteen years left empty this shop, then the boss help himself with the shop money business.
*I'm not familiar with this company. Never had any around me as I was growing up. We did have a Fay' s Drugs, which became Eckards. It may not be much longer before Sears and Kmart are both completely gone. Chapter 11 bankruptcy.*
