Dawson's first wife Diana Dors abandoned him and their small kids (some say run out of Hollywood for her lewd behavior) returned to London & never visited her family again. He was loved by LA rockers of the time 70&80's as he would attend each time his son's band played a club. He didn't remarry until they were adults. On his short return to Feud he made a point of not kissing. His 2nd wife stated she believed that he was secretly hurt by the criticism leveled against him for the tradition.
He was a LIP kisser not a cheek kisser. I kept waiting and waiting for him to tell about how it transformed from the "innocent" cheek kiss for luck to the near tongue kiss he would give Men's wives standing next to them.
It prob evolved from a kiss on the cheek to the lips so it wouldn't look like he was whispering answers in the contestants ears. But a host def couldn't get away with doing that now. That was a different time.
I always loved Richard Dawson. Truly a great man. Very humble. Extremely funny and talented. I followed him from Match Game to Hogan's Heroes and finally Family Feud. He'll never be forgotten!
What a talented actor! I never once thought of Richard Dawson as a thoughtful or intellectual guy. His characters and his public persona were always so light and easy to relate to. Well, he developed Newkirk into a pretty sophisticated character, but I just figured that's who he was - a Cockney pickpocket, not a decent actor. But these interviews show how thoughtful and talented he was. I just thought of the kissing as a 70's thing, or that he "liked the ladies." A truly nice and decent guy!
Bottom line, he always made me laugh. He had such a quick wit as evident by his appearances on both The Family Feud and The Match Game. Thanks for all the laughs, Richard.
it's really good to see richard dawson getting to have a say about how he was horribly misrepresented and misunderstood for his way of being while he was the family feud host. tv networks and those 'georgian scalawags' obviously don't have a clue about kindness.
Richard Dawson's definitely the best. I also like Steve Harvey and thought John O'Hurley did a good job. As far as Richard Karn, I still see him as Al on Home Improvement.
Honestly, Richard was great. Even HERE you can see its the same damn guy that was on the show. Looks totally different, but he gets it. Its the same Richard.
He is my favorite Family Feud host after Steve Harvey. I like how he explained why he innocently kissed the female contestants but I wish he would have said how it evolved into kissing them in the mouth. Now that he has passed I guess we'll never know.
steve harvey overacts in my opinion but i still find him entertaining, but i also enjoyed louie anderson. But yeah, we grew up with dawson, and though he was a perve, and made lots of mistakes, he did his job well.
Actually, Nero50z,Richard said before the reason he kissed women on the show is his father never showed him any afection when he was a little kid-so he promised himself he wouldn;t be like that when he grows up.It's only on the cheek .anyway!
on the cheek? he used to kiss them on the lips, even really young girls. was creepy.

Great video! I also remember watching him for years when I was a child!

I LOVE Richard Dawson because I understand his words.I wish the world understood.
I've seen him do that sign thousands of times, but I never knew that there was a special reason he did that. How nice!

Yeah. He wasn't this innocent guy. It was pretty creepy.
This pervert would kiss girls very young like 12 or 13 on the lips. I cant believe he got away with that. A true creep.
A great, fun loving, game show host with class. r.i.p. Mr.Dawson.
I wonder if he ever met the little girl he signed "I love you" to.
Steve Harvey's great,no doubt about it,but the late Ray Combs and Richard Karn were great too.
Bottom line, he always made me laugh. He had such a quick wit as evident by his appearances on both The Family Feud and The Match Game. Thanks for all the laughs, Richard.
talk about a person filled to the brim with love and care.
I loved you Richard wish I could of met you!

What a good man! I loved watching him on the Match Game! Was so sad to hear of his death.
What a gentleman. RIP Richard.

What about Gene Rayburn? Hes awesome too! :)
What a wonderful man- Godspeed Richard!
Perhaps the producers didn't want it to appear as if he was whispering answers in the contestants' ears?
I truly miss Richard Dawson! R.I.P
@Crockerish Harvey's definitely the best Feud host since Dawson though
Nice interview
well you have to atleast admit john o hurley had the best hosting voice for that show right?
RIP Richard Dawson!!

This was the best Family Fued ever, today Steve Harvey jokes around so much and never kisses anyone.

@201stcorp - Sad isn't it??
The dark side I sense in him.
What about Steve Harvey?
I love this guy, I hate to be mean but he sounds like & old queen sorry.
