    Man, the default samples they include with the Steinway are just insane. Very realistic piano sound.

    Like the mp11se. I still got the impression that the mid and low range of keyboard in general tends to lean more to the bass. Maybe that is necessary on stage. The same with the sparkling sound in the high notes. The grand is just beautiful. It got the brilliant sound you expect it to have.

    Are you sure that the MP11SE that you are using hasn't been tweaked or you are using a mellow patch? It sounds extremely dark and muddy. It is not suppose to sound that way.

    I have a Kawai VPC-1 (with full length wooden keys and hammers). I opened the case on mine the day it arrived so I could see the action. It uses real wood and Teflon pads (I think) that will wear. Like anything with a real mechanical piano action, both the VPC-1 and the MP11SE will eventually need maintenance. I'm not sure how long it will take before it's necessary, but it will happen. The good thing is that the MP11SE and VPC-1 won't cost as much or take as much time to re-work the action.

    The Steinway sounds bright regardless of comparison, in my ear anyway. What you touched on in regards to the resonance must surely be the reason most people prefer the acoustic, though the majority are unable to explain as you've described. I'm meaning the people that are choosing the acoustic over it's sound rather than action. I was surprised by the Kawai even though I've heard it lots, I have never heard it compared like this before. After I think about, not many people would have the chance to do or hear this demonstration, so thanks for thank.

      Fun fact: the SK-EX costs just over $250,000.
      I recently had the opportunity to tune and play one that our local college had rented for a concert. It put the 1925 Steinway D behind it to shame (granted, that one has been poorly maintained and needs a rebuild).

      Never? I disagree. Every single year, digital pianos get closer and closer to the sound and feel of a quality acoustic grand piano. It may be 10 or 15 years from now, but from hearing this comparison, Kawai is on the right track to actually making it happen.

      The sound comes alive on the grand, the kawai plays dead notes sampled with a fake sympathic resonance....the basses are laughable.
      The NordGrand sounds way better...but the keyboard is not as good as the Kawai....you need this MP11 for the keybed and a Clavia Nord for the sound (not perfect either but still more lively)

    I just had to get rid of my Yamaha C3 grand piano for space reasons and I’m still in recovery (I may never recover). The Kawai MP11SE sounds like it could be the right solution for me. I heard that it doesn’t have internal speakers. I would think that the speaker/amp would be very important for performance...but I don’t see that talked about much here. Can you please recommend a good option here (coming from someone who knows very little about quality accessories) for coupling with the Kawai MP11SE? Thank you!

  • @markfreedman2470
    @markfreedman2470 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Excellent video. Your perception of the differences is very accurate. You should make the comparison between the Steinway and FP 90X. from Roland. It does not use sampling at all. It uses modeling. Modeling is a vast improvement over sampling. It should sound much much closer to the Steinway. Particularly in the area of the interaction sounds of a single key with all the other keys on the piano.

  • @rikspector
    @rikspector 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    James,
    The Kawai really is excellent considering it simulates the real sound and is heard through a sound system, HOWEVER,
    Emotionally the Steinway is much better and the complexity of a big wooden/ metal instrument cannot be duplicated yet.
    MY Buffet r13 clarinet made of Grenadilla Wood has dynamics and overtones which are difficult to duplicate with my hard rubber clarinet by Ridenour although the Ridenour has somewhat better intonation on certain difficult notes.
    Very nice comparison.
    Thank you:)

      We do not use speakers with our keyboards unless we are on location. It is then that we use Roland KC350 amps to project the sound. You can really play are large room with a couple of KC350 amps. That model is no longer made, but they do make a KC400 last I heard. The smaller KC amps do not sound well as they have a lot of hiss to them. In the studio we record everything using direct outs.

Just asking as it’s what the samples are based on so comparing the mp11se against it’s original big brother I thought would be interesting. I also had an MP11 (non-SE) and it's a magnificent beast. I think Kawai's marketing on it is really spot-on - "The pianist's stage piano." The new SK-EX sound in the MP11SE really makes for a good upgrade.
    I think one other thing that could have been mentioned is the new pedal unit on the MP11SE; the new one is a contactless-optical unit. The older MP11 came with a third-party mechanical 3-pedal unit that tends to develop squeaks and a worn out potentiometer.
    The MP11SE is plain a simple a better/improved version of the MP11. Such a great DP, with no real peer in the market.

    What a difference in tone quality. Especialy in the low tones the Kawai is disappointing.

    Absolutely no comparison the Steinway sounds amazing the Kawai muffled and dull! If only I could afford either of them! 😂

      Don't be sentimental, the Kawai was nice too, with it's rich, mellow and warm voice, suitable for jazz or slow classic and modern piano pieces, not gonna lie. No offense, but would you say this if he brought a real Kawai grand piano in this video instead of this digital piano?😂

    And so, the perpetual struggle between mathematical and musical genius continues: the interactions within an acoustic piano are still -- 2021 July -- too complex to simulate in a digital piano... $2,800 vs $28,000... aproximate vs real...
    Aargh...
