Thanks so much for your patience and support everyone! See ya Friday with more true crime 💚
In life I now say “let’s give it a go!” In response to everything and anything, at any chance I can! 🥰
Love Ya!
All good Mike brother 🔥🙌🏼 we love whatever video you post!!!😊
Thanks for all your crazy content.😮
Hi from Tenerife! ;)
I totally relate to the random guy who happened to have a compass, but accidentally dropped it between the planks of the big raft when he took it out.
He was one of the guys that had to go....
Of course I know him, he is me.
Yeah, must admit I laughed at that . . . then felt really guilty.
Murphy existed back then, too? 🤔
That’s why you always have your compass tied to you.
I love the fact that Mike keeps pulling up his drawing. He’s so proud of it! Lmfao
I know right 🤣🤣🤣
I’m all for Mike always having a whiteboard 😂
It was made with love 😂😂😂
He really did draw that 😂
‘Not Poop’, lol
The more i hear about ship tragedies the more that i want to avoid getting onto a ship entirely
I've heard of cruise ships where the sewage system has started backing up. Everybody comes home sick.
Or know as much as i can about sea faring, survival and human nature, as i possibly can and also wanting to be prepared. Now i'm thinking about that tool to break your car window in case it gets submerged lol survival is when shit gets real crazy
I never do
Spent 15yrs on em its not that bad nowadays with all the tech, find ya in hrs.
If the ship doesn't sink then you gotta worry about someone murdering you & throwing you over board. This made even worse by the fact you paid thousands to be aboard where it happened. Totally agree with ya, land will do just fine for spending my down time.😂
How has this not been picked up for a horror film? This is horrific.
How were there NOT sharks?
Horrifically wonderful. (Ive been selling virgin cruises for the last 6 months)
Although it's not based on this event, there's a 1957 British movie called 'Seven Waves Away', ('Abandon Ship!' - in the USA).
It's based on another true event. Basically, it takes place on an overloaded lifeboat.
Then there's Alfred Hitchcock's 'Lifeboat', which also takes place entirely on a lifeboat.
@@4bibimimithere were, did you watch the video? (Around 23 minutes)
Because people don't know history
People today simply do not understand that being on a ship prior to coast guards being funded was essentially as remote as being in space on your way to the moon: you are alone and minutes from vanishing forever. That's why great navigators became famous.
I'd never heard of this, it's such a tragic and crazy story. Even crazier is the percentage of people who survived by just staying on the ship and hoping for the best is higher compared to Death Raft. Note to self: never get on a Death Raft
Agreed
This is the one time where my refusal to get up and move might have worked in my favour
Tragic?? This is more like Karma! These people were on their way to enslave an entire population in Africa!
Words to live by. Or at least, have less chance of dying.
You'd think engineering was a proven fact an used to keep ships afloat. 😂 yet those french Karens thought they would be better tryng a Gilligan's island escape 😂
Let’s applaud 👏🏽 Mike for his drawing! It was the best I’ve seen ‼️😍
NOT POO!!
Rembrandt would be jealous.
👏
yeah now we know he can draw well too 🏆🇮🇪☘️
It was better than the one in the Louvre
The painting is HUGE. It's a bit larger than life size. It was the national tragedy of the day and there was much criticism for the visceral nature of it and for being too soon. There's a reason it's in the Louvre though; it's very very good and you should absolutely see it in person.
Size really does matter...in paintings that is. I recently learned that the Mona Lisa is much smaller than I thought. Knowing its true size makes me wonder if the experience of seeing it in person would be less impactful. So knowing the painting is so large I would guess that makes it even more disturbing. I wish I could see it IRL.
How HUGE? Sixteen feet high by 23 feet wide.
@@Sweetyhide Mona is worth seeing, especially if you won't be in Paris for long, but it is indeed a small painting and you can't get into the optimal view distance unless you're right at its protective case. It's a dingy thing that would have been cleaned long ago if it wasn't a Leonardo. He liked to tinker with paint mixtures and so his paint can be extremely fugitive after half a millennium and no one has the confidence or insurance to take on the most famous piece of art in the world. Even his other works like the Salvator Mundi and the Last Supper need to be operated on by the best of the best conservators. So, go see it, but also go see one of the apprentices' Mona Lisas to get an idea of what's under the grime (like her eyebrows lol). The Louvre is one of the greatest art collections in the world and you can spend weeks there if you can tolerate Paris for that long.
@@SAOS451316 That's fascinating! Thank you for the information now I know Mona has eyebrows.

Love you Mike
I've never heard this history before. It's heartbreaking. You told it beautifully. Note to self, stay on the abandon ship.
And fight selfish officers
@@BrooksDunnmore like frag said officer's
Yes yes yes!! I've never heard the story before either, but my first thought was, "Stay On The Beached Boat!!" With the provisions at least dry, and shade from the sun, and wood to make fire during the nights, I believe things would have seemed much less desperate so fast!!
I've never heard of this either! So scary! I would definitely try to stay on the beached ship too.
Sacre bleu
Prime example of how one bad decision leads to another, and eventually what should have been a minor problem turns into a catastrophe. It's like quicksand. The more you struggle the worse it gets. Stay calm, keep your head and don't make your situation worse
I remember seeing the painting of the “Raft of the Medusa” in Louvre without knowing the story of the wreck. It’s very disturbing picture
I was thinking that's the one! I haven't personally seen it but yes, it's quite an image
One of the three French painted famous paintings at the Louvre that are a must see
Great episode to enjoy a meal while watching 😘
@@vickiivins3288🤢
Who in their right flipping mind would call that a ship!? And to faithfully climb aboard?? This should be made into a horror movie!! Lost at sea is one of the most terrifying experiences a group can go thru. The true story of Moby Dick is truly horrific, similar to this but all of the hardships were directly caused by a giant bull whale.
Here is a saying for you "Every society is three meals away from chaos" its eerily true.
I mean, remember the riots over TP at the beginning of the pandemic?
Ya, it sure is eery to recognize how vulnerable we are.
And people still refuse to prepare today.
Your illustration of the raft was instrumental for me to envision the reality of the people involved and the situation they found themselves in
😂😂 I sense alot of sarcasm here and this comment should be upoted to the top. Well played lol
Best comment ever !!! Like EV-ER... BE MY NEW BFF!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Comment breaks the internet!😂
Hope you plan on telling more historical true crime cases. They are wildly interesting and you did a great job telling this is scary tale
The ultimate cause of the tragedy is blind obedience to authority. The sailors knew that they were getting into shallow water, but no one would go against the captain by changing course.
LOVE when Mike decides to wear this shirt 🔥🔥🔥
I love listening to Mike.He makes some really terrible situations a bit more bareable to listen to
Yes! The shirt collection!
I have a very similar one with flamingos on it. I can't bring myself to rock it though 😢 old shirt I got on a whim from an Army Navy store.
I came looking for this comment and was going to leave it myself if I couldn’t find it. I love this shirt lol.
@@DPSFSU sounds awesome, you should wear it
Not gonna lie.... this terrified me more than most of the true crime Mike covers. 😢😂
And the drawing you made was absolutely stunning!!❤
I've thought about it a few times today, true horror
Same
Honestly, I can't get past the fact it only took three days for the whole thing to descend into madness and cannibalism. When you first started talking about the craziness going on, on the raft, and kept going on and on about people breaking bones and getting thrown off and floating away to die, being eaten by sharks, etc. I thought that was during the entire ordeal. Then you said, "then the darkness came on the first night..." Excuse me? All of that was just the first day!? Holy friggin moly.
Also, I love the whole self-awareness of your "Day Tree" caption. 😂😂
What a great job, Mike. Thank you for sharing their story. I definite tragedy if I've ever heard one.
Seriously!!!
Panic spreads rapidly unless you have someone to take charge. And back then they didnt have emergency protocols . That's why multi storey buildings these days have fire marshalls on each floor. It stops people panicking , running on stairwells & getting trampled & injured in the panic .
Really like these more historic or disaster or mystery type ones in addition to the true crime! I remember studying this painting in art history, but we didn't go this far in detail of the story. So sad.
If you want to know more about this, I recommend Jonathan Miles book, The Wreck Of The Medusa.
I still think it’s wild that someone suggested they ditch the cannons but the boss says “no way, that’s crazy! Then the ship would be defenceless, idiot. Let’s cannibalise the wood from the ship and leave it.” Glad they left those cannons to defend the ships that they scrapped and left behind anyway.
Who knew Mike was such a history buff!? Now he's a triple threat! He does crime, history and he's an artist! The other creators better step up their game!😅
Don't forget he a comedian ❤
As well as a successful life insurance dancer!
He’s a little rainbow weasel 🌈
"He does crime" ? Didn't you mean TRUE crime?
Treeple threat?
If only The Medusa had stayed with the Convoy of the other ships, instead of getting ahead of them without worry.. everyone or at least more than 10 of them would have been rescued 😔
What an incredible painting, it tells the story without any words
This was actually more difficult to watch & digest than some of the darkest murders & other crazy you've covered Mike! Love you too ;)
History and horror are the perfect match. I saw that painting at the Louvre last year and thought the artist had a macabre fantasy. Thanks, Mike, for the lecture, and the video.
My paternal grandparents had a large (2x3 ft.) oil painting copy of this painting hanging in their living room. The story was that a relative long ago (1870s?) had travelled to France to study painting, and then disappeared. Evidently all that was left was his reproduction of the painting, which became a family heirloom. When I was a kid in the 1960's we were told that it was "the wreck of the medusa".
In retrospect I'm glad I didn't look too closely or know its story, because nightmares I reckon.
Definitely nightmares! Interesting story. It certainly trumps the bullfighting pictures my parents had/have hanging around.
Muad'Dib, is that you? @@damac5136

Seeing that painting in person and knowing the story was incredible. Those poor people, the horrors they endured
Who was the chill dude writing this whole story down through all the carnage. Imagine eating days old waterlogged rotting bodies of your coworkers
👏👏👏👏👏 Giving Mike all the applause for his fantastic art skills. But lowkey this case terrifies me. Not just because I have a Thalassaphobia, but because I always had the fear of being on a ship that ends up crashing due to negligence, idiotic/selfish goveners or any other cause. But glad to have ya Mike.
Same here! It always freaks me out, especially the darker the water. I would've stayed on the Medusa, knowing ppl would come looking for the goods!
Yeah just sucks that he doesn't even interact with his community :/
People are leaving amazing comments, he would get even more love and also algorithm if he replied or loved some commwnts, absolutely terrible IMO. 😢
@@jaymxuno, it's much better. creators who interact with their community are open to much more criticism and scrutiny, as well as inappropriate relationship advances. maybe he's married and finds it inappropriate to lend even the least credence to fans' parasocial ideations.
@@SpecialBlanket that would be called insecurity issues. Interacting with your community has nothing to do with that, neither does criticism, you can choose what u ignore either way.
I can't even imagine the absolute hell that the survivors went through. How do you survive something like this and then just... keep living your life? This one actually made me a little emotional.
Yes. I had to stop playing this one half way through. Listened to some music, did the dishes, played a little solitaire, then back to the shoo...
its harrowing to think what a thin line separates civilized humanity and savage survival instinct
I saw this amazing painting years ago * it's incredible and huge!!! 23 feet wide by 17 feet* I super appreciate hearing the sad tragic story behind it! I thought it was an artist's dream, never a true story! Breaks my heart to hear it's real and so many people were forced to suffer such an awful demise... ps. So crazy to think that it only took 3 days for everyone to go insane. Love the story. Very interesting.
Because they were drinking the sea water
Rule of threes:
Your brain can go 3 minutes with oxygen before you start to damage it. 3 minutes with oxygen period. 3 days without water. Three weeks without food. And you wanna see people turn on one another fast? Make em miss 9 meals (3 a day). It's not perfect, but it's a good outline. Sorry for the novel!

Probably one of the worst way to go. Being stuck in the middle of the ocean is crazy
One of my biggest fears. So I stay away from the sea. So I can never be lost init
Check out the story of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca. Or at least everybody else that started with him on that one trip...
there was a guy who survived getting stuck in an air pocket of a sunken ship. I think it took like 24 hours to resurface cuz he'd been at the bottom of the ocean for so long. 😭 I literally can't imagine sitting in cold water and pitch blackness for days waiting for the air to run out and to suffocate
There is no good way to go...but middle of ocean. You know you odds.slim.

What a horrible situation to be in. I honestly don't think anyone is able to say what they would do if they'd had been in the same position. It definitely puts context to the will for survival.
If I couldn't be in one of the long boats, definitely would've stayed with the ship.
I remember now that when I was going through a bad breakup (three days of utter agony), I felt as though I was going insane. And I don't mean good ol' anger, pain and fear -- I mean delirium!

The Raft of Medusa by Theodore Gericault is my fav painting in the Louve. This painter has a interesting way of depicting realistic decay & Death ❤️🇨🇦
I love Theodore Gericault’s biography. It’s almost as tragic as the tale of the “ raft of the Madusa”. I wish Mike would cover that as well ❤
Totally amazing painting, the detail is so realistic for oil
it was a very controversial painting. Géricault first exhibited it at the Paras Salon in 1819. Many critics were horrified by Géricault's work, and King Louis XVIII himself warned Géricault that he had brought about his own downfall.

Truly enjoyed listening to this story - I have a tale to tell about Le Louvre when I was about 10 years old my parents took my little sister and me on holiday to the south of France, on our journey down from the north of Scotland we stayed in a hotel in Paris, my mother is an artist and wanted to go and see Le Louvre - so my sister and I were told to "behave" and were allowed to "look around" I saw these big red velvet ropes in front of a Painting and the painting looked bumpy and pointy so I wanted to touch it -- I went under the ropes and started feeling this painting with both my grubby 10 year old hands... turns out it was Van Gogh oil painting (which they took down immediately) and because of me my whole family was thrown out of Le Louvre and the painting has never been put on display again 😳😳! I do feel shameful and would like to apologize that probably because of my actions no paintings of Van Gogh are on display anymore .😔 😔
