17) Ian Hunter - Ian Hunter Ian Hunter did one of the best live gigs I've ever seen at a club called Fast Lane in Asbury Park, NJ in June of '79. This was the great Ian Hunter Band of the mid to late '70s that featured ex-Spiders From Mars guitarist Mick Ronson absolutely burning it up. I was absolutely devastated when Mott The Hoople split up. There were innumerable other important bands and artists around at the time, but only a handful meant as much to me personally, and in my humble opinion, few were of greater significance. The third album of a trilogy - Mott and The Hoople being the others - Ian Hunter's self-titled solo debut reveals a songwriter on fire. From the cheeky Cockney "'Allo!", which signals the beginning of the awesome "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" (way better than Great White's cover!) to the almost orgasmic chanting of "I Get So Excited", this album fairly crackles with lyrical invention, yet plants itself firmly in the Rock 'N' Roll tradition. "Once Bitten, Twice Shy", "Who Do You Love", "I Get So Excited" and "The Truth, The Whole Truth, Nuthin' But The Truth" are terrific. "Boy", Hunter and Ronson's song about David Bowie is a tour-de-force. I find the ballad "It Ain't Easy When You Fall" and the accompanying poem "Shades Off" especially moving, because even though not its subject matter, it brings to mind the traumas and pitfalls of my teenage years, and still manages to bring a tear to my eye. This is an album that flashes by quickly, rife with hooks, memorable songs, quintessentially British lyrics, rolling pianos, razor sharp Ronson guitar lines, and occasional spoken-word waxings from Hunter. It's the first of a nice run of cool releases from Ian Hunter. His best cover art too, for what that's worth. 1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver 2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand 4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser 5) ZZ Top - Fandango! 6) Eagles - One Of These Nights 7) Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise 8) Neil Young - Zuma 9) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live! 10) Strawbs - Ghosts 11) Jethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery 12) Angel - S/T 13) Crack The Sky - S/T 14) Rush - Fly By Night 15) Grand Funk Railroad - Caught In The Act 16) KISS - Alive! 17) Ian Hunter - S/T
Today`s pick: Camel - "The Snow Goose". Third album from one of my favorite prog bands. All instrumental and interconnected, best listened to as one long piece. Nothing too jarring here, just beautiful and melodic compositions. Andrew Latimer`s guitar and flute playing are exceptional as is the keyboard work of Peter Bardens.
For day 17, my next 1975 pick is (in alphabetical order) DEEP PURPLE, “Come Taste The Band”. DP’s only mark 4 album, after Ritchie left for the first time, and with Tommy Bolin having joined the band on lead guitar and backing vocals. A decent album, though not able to match earlier ones like “DP In Rock” from mark 2, or “Burn” from mark 3. Remarkable and strong songs are the opener “Coming Home”, “Gettin’ Tighter”, “This Time Around” and especially the final song “You Keep On Moving” with the amazing soulful vocal duet of Coverdale and Hughes, while Jon Lord shines absolutely beautiful on the keyboards. I have noticed that some of you guys have praised Tommy’s solo album “Teaser” a lot, but I’m sorry that I can’t contribute to that, as I never had it. And of course, I don’t know about of the similarities or differences between the two albums. Maybe, I will never know… but just let’s move on. When the band went on tour later on, it soon became obvious that they had a lot of weak performances, and that the weakest links have been with Tommy (because of heavy heroine addiction) and Glenn Hughes (due to his cocaine addiction). Purple’s original members Jon Lord and Ian Paice then decided to disband the group after the tour, and for a quite large couple of years, it seemed that Purple was history by the time of 1976. As we know now, up from 1984 the Purple story went on with the mark 2 reunion, and now still continues with… I don’t know, mark 8 or 9 maybe? Anyway, I don’t really care, because I have lost their path, after Ritchie has left them for the second time. As for Tommy Bolin… I wish he had not that deadly addiction, and that they would have been able to continue with him for another few years and albums, and if he still would be around with us now. A big loss as a guitar player, writer and vocalist at such a young age… RIP. Regarding Glenn Hughes, I’m happy for him having overcome his cocaine addiction, and that he is still around, having kept his vocal skills all through the years and decades… though I wish he would avoid some of his too excessive screeching performances. Sometimes, less sounds better. A great bow to the keyboard wizard, Mr. Jon Lord… RIP. And to Ian Paice… one of the world’s greatest drummers, the last remaining original member of the group, after all the decades. And still going strong. Not to forget about you, Mr. Coverdale… after a few solo albums, leading into a very great second band career with Whitesnake, featuring Jon Lord, Ian Paice and Cozy Powell, among others like Micky Moody, Bernie Marsden and Mel Galley… such a beautiful time to remember when these guys were around and created live magic back then. My personal albums from 1975, in alphabetical order: day 15: ABBA, s/t day 16: America, History day 17: Deep Purple, Come Taste The Band
Super history lessons, Frank. Obviously bands don't have to stay the same members to create great music over many decades! Obviously bands don't have to stay the same members to create great music over many decades
@@weirddebbiem1619 Thank you kindly, Debbie! I just wish my list of the 1975 albums were much longer... it misses a lot of albums which are highly praised by you and other SOT fans on here.
Black Sabbath - Sabotage, their 6th studio album. An great album, the first side is spectacular with Hole In The Sky, the thunderous Symptom Of The Universe and lengthy, kind of proggy, Megalomania. The second side is a bit more off the wall, but still really good, love The Writ which closes the album.
Robin Trower - For Earth Below My first Trower album. His first three solo records are outstanding. //Alphonse Mouzon - Mind Transplant //Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti //Nazareth - Hair Of The Dog //Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger //Steely Dan - Katy Lied //Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic //Scorpions - In Trance //Rush - Fly By Night //Budgie - Bandolier //Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow //Styx - Equinox //MTB - Searchin' For A Rainbow //Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy //Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band //Steve Hillage - Fish Rising //ZZ Top - Fandango!

Day17-Fleetwood Mac-Self Titled. This is the album that starts the band’s commercial greatness. With the additions of Stevie and Lindsey, this was a top 10 album of 1975. I used to listen to this album when I was younger, with songs like Rhiannon, Over my Head and Stevie Nicks staple song Landslide. I know it isn’t really rock, but it’s my choice anyway. That is my number 17 pick.
Not really rock but who cares? Many would say that a lot of my choices aren't really rock either. Anyway a great choice there, actually I'm So Afraid is probably my favourite track.
Day 17. Ted Nugent - S/T Ted's first solo set since dropping the Amboy Dukes moniker and it is one of the best of the year. Starting off with a classic Stranglehold that is well known in mainstream America, then into Stormtroopin, and the barrage of guitar greatness keeps on going. I'm sure this one is on many lists. 1. Miles Davis - Agharta 2. The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy! 3. Larry Coryell and 11th House - Level One 4. Elf - Trying To Burn The Sun 5. Jim Hall - Concierto 6. Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah 7. Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color 8. Clifton Chenier - Bogalusa Boogie 9. The Meters - Fire on the Bayou 10. Herbie Hancock - Man-Child 11. My Day 17 pick is an album released on September 1975 and recorded in July-August 1975 at Can-Base (Vancouver) and produced by Mike Flicker. I'm talking about the debut studio album by American rock band Heart. Dreamboat Annie .The success of the album indirectly led to a break between the band and label. The first cracks appeared when the group tried to renegotiate their royalty rate to be more in keeping with what they thought a platinum band should be earning. For this Michael Fisher, who was Ann Wilson's boyfriend at the time, stepped aside as de facto manager and Ken Kinnear was hired. Mushroom's tough stance in negotiations, and their opinion that perhaps the band was a one-hit wonder, led to Mike Flicker leaving the label. He did, however, continue to produce for Heart.[18] The relationship broke down completely when the label bought a full-page ad in Rolling Stone, mocked up like a National Enquirer front page.[19] The ad used a photo similar to the one on the Dreamboat Annie album cover, showing Ann and Nancy back to back with bare shoulders. The caption under the photo read, "It Was Only Our First Time!" The band had not been consulted and was furious with the double meaning of the caption.[20] Since the label could no longer provide Flicker as producer as the contract specified, the band took the position that they were free to move to another label and signed with Portrait Records. Mushroom insisted that the band was still bound to the contract which called for two albums. So, Mushroom released Magazine with incomplete tracks, studio outtakes and live material and a disclaimer on the cover.[21] The band got a federal injunction to stop distribution of the 1977 edition of Magazine. Most of the initial 50,000 pressings were recalled from stores. The court eventually decided that the band could sign with Portrait, but that they did owe Mushroom a second album. The band returned to the studio to re-record, remix, edit, and re-sequence the recordings. Magazine was re-released in 1978 and sold a million copies in less than a month.[22] Shelly Siegel, the promoter behind the "First Time" ad and vice president of the record label, died a few months after the re-release, and Mushroom Records went bankrupt two years later. The episode had at least one more repercussion. Not long after the ad appeared, a radio promoter asked Ann about her lover; he was referring to Nancy, thus implying that the sisters were incestuous lesbian lovers. The encounter infuriated Ann who went back to her hotel and wrote the words to what became one of Heart's signature songs, "Barracuda".[23] At the time, the band was based in Vancouver, British Columbia; the album was recorded in Vancouver and first released in Canada by the local label Mushroom Records in September 1975, eventually reaching number 20 on RPM's Top Album chart and earning a double platinum certification.[10] It was released in the United States on February 14, 1976, through the US subsidiary of Mushroom Records in Los Angeles, peaking at number seven on the Billboard 200. It also reached the top 10 in the Netherlands and Australia in early 1977. The album contains three commercially successful singles, two of which, "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man", became staples on North American FM radio. Producer Mike Flicker helped the group to polish their sound and obtain a recording contract with the label. Succinct history lesson on Heart and Mushroom, Mr. Viper. The Wilsons got the last word with Barracuda, a song that has not lost its bite after 50 years. Well done.
#15 Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac Finally, the formula for success for an already veteran and talented but unsuccessful group was that Bob Welch left to start his solo career and the incorporation of guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks. Fair doses of hooky rock and pop. Unforgettable songs like “Rhiannon” and “I'm So Afraid” are instant hits. Albums That Are 50 Years Old in 2025 #15 Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac #16 El Reloj - El Reloj #17 Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare #18 John Lennon - Rock 'n' Roll #19 Kraftwerk - Radio-Activity #20 Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent #21 Scorpions - In Trance #22 Neil Young - Tonight's the Night / Zuma #23 Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte #24 Kiss - Dressing to Kill / Alive #25 Patti Smith - Horses #26 AC/DC - TNT #27 Neu! - Neu! 75 #28 Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time #29 Budgie - Bandolier #30 Steely Dan - Katy Lied #31 Tangerine Dream - Rubycon
Who doesn't love Fleetwood Mac? Whether it's their earlier classics like Man Of the World or The Green Manalishi or later stuff from this great album and those that followed.
ROBIN TROWER FOR EARTH BELOW. Dewar’s vocals are the perfect accompaniment to Trower’s guitar. Picking out favourite tracks is difficult, but two I particularly like are It’s only money and the title track. Brilliant Trower.
Hey Shaun. I have a soft spot for Robin Trower. He was the first guitarist that performed Jimi Hendrix style music and did it brilliantly. His music was every bit as psychedelic as Jimi's and thats a genre of music that I've got a soft spot for too. Robin's live album is hard to get now but I listened to it hundreds of times.
My Day 17 Pick: Rush - Caress of Steel The band's second album from 1975, and their third overall. This one starts with the rocking "Bastille Day" and "I Think I'm Going Bald." Then, it continues with the pop rocker "Lakeside Park" - a song I absolutely love. But the two epics closing out of the album, "The Necromancer" and "The Fountain of Lamneth" - the latter being one of my favorite songs from the band - have them finally embracing their prog rock prowess!
Queen A Night at the Opera! I'm trying to rank the final 15, is how they fit into my music journey. After Killer Queen broke through as a top 20, They went to seven different studios and created one of the masterpiece albums. When a proggy- metally Band adds harp ukulele, jangle, piano, timpani and double bass, multitrax vocals and guitars to become orchestral metal, you have the newest. Juggernaut. Utter bombast. Boh Rhaps possibly one of the greatest songs ever, but the fun continues very heavy and very jaunty light-hearted tunes mixed amongst each other. And Roger Taylor singing. I'm in love with my car is great. It's not a joke, many love their cars!!! This album could be close to number one but not quite as close to my heart as the others others to follow. BTW, we need to get a petition to urge Pete to add Aerosmith back into the top 31!!!
For day 17 I go with Queen - A Night At The Opera From start to finish that's a great one. Death On Two Legs, 39, Love Of My Life, The Prophet's Song, Bohemian Rhapsody - these are all classics by the band. Even the deep tracks have the status of classics In Love With My Car and Your My Best friend to just name a few. A classic - enough said
DAY 17-LED ZEPPELIN=Physical Graffiti Hi friends a big great album of past sessions of lp that came out in 75. Physical Graffiti is the sixth album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. Released as a double album on 24 February 1975 in the United States and on 28 February 1975 in the United Kingdom, it was the group's first album to be released under their new label, Swan Song Records. The band wrote and recorded eight new songs for the album in early 1974 at Headley Grange, a country house in Hampshire, which gave them ample time to improvise arrangements and experiment with recording. The total playing time covered just under three sides of an LP, so they decided to expand it into a double album by including previously unreleased tracks from the sessions for the band's earlier albums Led Zeppelin III (1970), Led Zeppelin IV (1971) and Houses of the Holy (1973). The album covered a range of styles including hard rock, progressive rock, rock 'n' roll and folk.[3] The album was then mixed over summer 1974 and planned for an end-of-year release; however, its release was delayed because the Peter Corriston-designed die-cut album cover proved difficult to manufacture. wiki ========================== Disc 1 1 Custard Pie Jimmy Page / Robert Plant Led Zeppelin 2 The Rover Jimmy Page / Robert Plant Led Zeppelin 3 In My Time of Dying John Bonham / John Paul Jones / Jimmy Page / Robert Plant Led Zeppelin 4 Houses of the Holy Jimmy Page / Robert Plant Led Zeppelin 5 Trampled Under Foot John Paul Jones / Jimmy Page / Robert Plant Led Zeppelin 6 Kashmir John Bonham / Jimmy Page / Robert Plant Led Zeppelin

Was a lot of fun wasn't it and pretty creative. I had along the albums of all the Zepp vinyls. Unfortunately had to cut back and purge later but do have the album on CD. And other Zepp to get CDs to. I have Zepp Lps vinyls to the first 4 and Song Remains The Same soundtrack film vinyl. As to so loving the album of this, Custard Pie having grazing rocker to start it off. Then you have The Rover an epic rocker such a powerful driving track. Kicks ass. Then In My Time Of Dying the heavy blues driven 11 minute that really gets the band stretch and the drums of Bonham and Page and his guitar monster playing Plant singing and JP Jones bass. Then Houses of The Holy with the pop rocker it is. Then the track heavy Trampled Under Foot and JP Jones galloping keyboard and the funky sound and vibes you get from the rocker along with Page Plant and Bonham. Love. Then the track of Kashmir. The middle eastern rocker epic it is/ Plant singing his heart out and Pages riffs and JP Jones keys and Bonhams thunderous drums, Love and always fave. One that i would attempt to sing to. Still got the pipes for it. But I'm older not younger but young in spirit. Then In The Light the good keyboard/moog/ guitar driven number Plant and Bonham as inspiring like. Then the folksy acoustic instrumental of Bron-Yr-Aur and very nice then Down By The Seaside with the country feeling to it and rock track. Reminded of The Stones a bit. Then a grand epic of Ten Years Gone. Then Night Flight a rocker and pop mover. Then==The Wanton Song. A nice rocker Then thef olky acoustic rock & roll of "Boogie with Stu" and "Black Country Woman" both great vibes and good fun music that Zepp could pull off. Then Sick Again a heavy rocker hard grimace track and with all the power that gives it. Its great and closer. So I give the album a 4.5 to pretty near perfect to perfect that Zepp could come along to give you. Bro would claim to have seen Zepp in early day then this. As well hs was 5 yrs older. Anyway could have but couldn't make happen. SO there you have this big monumental album, Get into along of everything as it has a lot that anything to like or love. To Pete great lp of Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Covered Day 11 when I did. Take care everyone and love hugs and prayers And health wise to us all. Thanks for waiting to the article. 🎶🎶🎸🎸🎹 🎤🥁❤🤗🙏☮
Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here, and we share our pick today. RITCHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. To me it signals the arrival of one of the great rock vocalists. Sure, Ronnie James Dio had been around in Elf, and I remember seeing them support Purple on the Burn tour, but this was big league stuff, and RJD passed the test with flying colours. Favourite tracks have to be Man On The Silver Mountain and Catch The Rainbow. Never got 16th Century Greensleeves, but I reckon Still I'm Sad is a terrific cover.
My pick today will be Supertramp ‘Crisis? What Crisis?’ Really love all these early Supertramp albums, they’re special to me. Have a great Friday everybody!
I love their early albums. But l like some of their later stuff too, Brother Where You Bound and Free as a Bird are pretty good as well. Just the other day l was listening to An Awful Thing to Waste from FAAB and thought this could easily have been on Crisis album.

My favorite albums turning 50. In no particular order: Day 17: Rush - Fly By Night Rush released two albums in 1975; Fly By Night and Caress of Steel. I chose Fly by Night because I have more history with this album. I liked this album the first time I listened to it. With Caress of Steel, it took a little bit of time to grow on me. Now Caress of Steel is one of my favorite Rush albums. My favorite tracks: “By-Tor and the Snow Dog” “Fly By Night” “Making Memories” “Anthem” “Beneath, Between and Behind” Day 17: Rush - Fly By Night Day 16: Kiss - Alive! Hello Pete and everyone. Today’s album choice is one that has recently been featured by Pete, so there isn’t much more I can usefully add: Thin Lizzy - Fighting If the previous album marked the starting point for their twin guitar era, it was this one where their signature sound became established. My favourite songs are Suicide, Wild One and King’s Vengeance. Nos. 11-30 (not ranked) Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama Styx - Equinox Rory Gallagher - Against The Grain Doobie Brothers - Stampede Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis? Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band Roxy Music - Siren Kansas - Song For America Foghat - Fool For The City Little Feat - The Last Record Album Wings - Venus And Mars Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow Nils Lofgren - self titled Steely Dan - Katy Lied UFO - Force It Favourite Live Album : Blue Oyster Cult - On Your Feet Or On Your Knees
I heard this album many many years ago. Going back to the time when a friend Ian who l mentioned yesterday had this album, l was impressed but never bought it. I do have some Thin Lizzy albums but not this one. Great choice though Bryan.
@@keithjones6023 Thanks Keith. They are another band where I preferred to listen to their live albums ahead of the studio releases. I particularly like the Live And Dangerous album from 1978 which, for me, captures them at the peak of their career.
# 15 Van der Graaf Generator: Godbluff After his solo album “Nadir's Big Chance”, this is the second record from the year 1975 with the participation of Peter Hammill to appear in my ranking. As always with VdGG, “Godbluff” is a tremendously intense record that almost takes your breath away. It consists of only 4 songs and lasts less than 40 minutes, but feels like a work lasting several hours (which is a positive thing here). # 16 Renaissance: Scheherazade & Other Stories # 17 Patti Smith: Horses # 18 Queen: A Night at the Opera # 19 Chris Squire: Fish Out of Water # 20 Steely Dan: Katy Lied # 21 Manfred Mann’s Earth Band: Nightingales and Bombers # 22 Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention: One Size Fits All # 23 Neil Young: Tonight’s the Night # 24 Peter Hammill: Nadir’s Big Chance # 25 Be-Bop Deluxe: Futurama # 26 Tangerine Dream: Rubycon # 27 10cc: The Original Soundtrack # 28 Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns # 29 Jeff Beck: Blow by Blow # 30 Ted Nugent: Ted Nugent # 31 Supertramp: Crisis? I remember in Grade School on the way to school, my bus driver had an 8-track tape player. 🚌 One morning, he brought this tape for us to hear. The song that stood out was Man On The Silver Mountain. It was dark, it was heavy, it was moody! Years later as an adult, I hear it on the radio and remember it. And I drew a mascot for the song. It was an old man in a nightshirt riding a unicycle! You never know what you’re gonna come up when the man on the silver mountain comes around! Glad to hear your wife is coming home!
15. Funkadelic - Let's Take It To The Stage Funkadelic gets the edge here over the more highly regarded Parliament album because I prefer Funkadelic's more eclectic approach to psychedelic rock, soul and funk. The sisterfromanothamister album Mothership Connection may have a more consistently boingy groove, but I like it when Funkadelic gets deeply weird -- a guarantee on every album, such as the dirgey "Baby I Owe You Something Good" that sounds like Emerson Lake & Palmer trying their hand at a power ballad. Bernie Worrell geeks out on analog synths on "Astmosphere," sort of their cartoonish response to German kosmische musik. My favorites are the opener "Good to Your Earhole" and "Stuffs and Things" -- both the vibe and harmony vocals were a big influence on Fishbone. Who are we kidding, it influenced practically everything. "Get Off Your Ass and Jam" is the big dumb anthem that deserves to replace KISS's "Rock and Roll All Nite" as THE party song of 1975. Day 17 My pick today is: Aerosmith “Toys in the Attic” 1 Seals and Crofts “I’ll Play for You “ 2 Bruce Springsteen “Born to Run” 3 America “Hearts” 4 Eagles “One of these nights” 5 Paul Simon “Still Crazy After All These Years” 6 Heart “ Dreamboat Anne” 7 Eric Carmen “S/T” 8 Fleetwood Mac “S/T” 9 Nazareth “Hair of the Dog” 10 ELO “Face the Music” 11 Bob Dylan “Blood on the Tracks” 12 Steely Dan “Katy Lied” 13 Gary Wright “Dream Weaver” 14 Journey “S/T” 15 Kansas “Song for America” 16 Patti Smith “Horses” 17 Aerosmith “Toys in the Attic”
Now into the top 15 and my nomination is one already selected by Pete and also by a number of SOT viewers so not a lot more needs to be said about HAIR OF THE DOG by NAZARETH. Pete obviously did his own summing up and theres been an excellent critique by my friend Mr Iain Head, full of his usual good humour and informative spirit. I'll just reiterate this is Nazareth's most commercially successful album and a tour de force from the cover artwork through to the music. The title track with its great riff and talkbox effects is one of the highlights of the band's career. They really were on a roll when they recorded Hair etc. From the likes of Miss Misery and the cover of Love Hurts, they barely put a foot wrong. Pete Agnew and Darrell Sweet provide a solid rythmic base, there's Manny Charlton's inventive guitar work and those wonderfully husky full throated vocals from Dan McCafferty bringing the songs to life. More great albums followed down the line such as No Mean City and Expect No Mercy, but for me this album is the peak of Nazareth's career.
In alphabetical order pick #17 is definitely my most obscure on my list is from a Canadian band. With Tommy Bolin playing on a few tracks Moxy- s/t ( Debut) 1. Aerosmith- Toys In The Attic 2. Angel- s/t (Debut) 3. Bad Company- Straight Shooter 4. Black Sabbath- Sabotage 5. Blue Oyster Cult- On Your Feet or On Your Knees (Live) 6. Alice Cooper- Welcome To My Nightmare 7. I still need to check this albun out in its entirety. A local metal station axrually did a 1975 segment last week and thebsong they played (moon?) Was great.
Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Hope all going well at your end and back later to see your selection. Personal pick today? The third studio album from this English progressive rock band which was released on the Decca label in April 1975 - (Music Inspired By) The Snow Goose by Camel. The parenthetical part of the title was on the initial release due to certain legal issues, but the album subsequently released just as The Snow Goose. The album charted in the UK (#22) and US (#162) and was certified silver in the UK (60,000 units) but don't remember hearing any of this album in the period after its release. This is an album that hit the personal radar soon after finding the SoT channel almost 5 years ago. This album does not have the energy generally associated with this band and it completely surprised me with its atmospheric songwriting and as well thematic runs through the album. An instrumental album but it does not suffer one bit from a lack of vocals. Quickly moving up as one of my (now many) favorites from SoT, it is one of those first albums ordered immediately after listening to it after one an SoT program. This deserves a spot on the personal list even though I haven't been listening to it for 50 years. A sonic treasure enjoyed often. Thanks, Pete. looking forward to hearing your selection later and tomorrow as well.
@@melaniethurber5117 Thanks, Melanie. I'm about as ready for the cold blast as I can get. Out in the panhandle, my sister may get snow or even a wintry mix. We've had an ice storm here once during my adult life and, believe me, Floridians do not know how to drive in those conditions. So if we even get a hint of that here, I'll be staying homebound. But it's like with hurricanes - you prepare the best you can and then wait it out. Hope you keeping warm, too.
Hey Joel. Uncle Ted did so many great albums it's hard to pick out his best. His debut is in the top three for sure. As of last year his touring days are over. He said that being cooped up in hotel rooms while on tour got to feel like being in a prison cell. A pity. I never saw him live in concert.
Saw Rainbow on a bill with Cheap Trick a couple of times around 77. I think? They opened for Cheap Trick, I read how they weren't doing as well in the states by Long Live RnR. But they were great. I had all the albums back then. Cheap Trick was great too. All the best to Mrs Pete

Day 17's pick is Sabotage by Black Sabbath. Arguably the original line up's last great album. What an opener in Hole In The Sky. Heavy as balls and Ozzy sounds especially manic. Tony, Geezer and Bill provide suitably appropriate backing - riffs and drums from Hell's own waiting room. A short acoustic guitar interlude before the proto thrash of Symptom Of The Universe. It didn't become a Sabbath classic for nothing. Once again, all four members giving it everything they've got. The longest track comes next. Megalomania. A mid-tempo rocker that cranks up at around the 3.30 mark. The Thrill Of It All kicks off Side 2. A bluesy start before the band kick in with more explosive riffs. Supertzar is the oddity. Sounding like the soundtrack to a gothic horror movie. Am I Going Insane (Radio) was the stab at commerciality before the album closes with the 8 minute plus The Writ. Written from personal experience about a previous manager and the record industry in general. Ozzy sounding wonderfully angry and manic again. The sleeve was erm... different. Ozzy wearing something that looks like his wife's dress and Bill wearing his wife's tights. What were they thinking? The terrible cover art notwithstanding, the music contained in this is what helped (along with the previous 5 albums) solidify their legend. I've often said that the first 6 Sabbath albums are heavy music's Magna Carta. I stand by that statement still.
Today is one you wont see on this list too often. Roger Daltrey. Ride a rock horse. Excellent solo album. Roger is in great voice. Get your love, Proud, Feeling, and Milk Train. Hidden jewel of an album , if u like Rogers voice in his prime
17. Tangerine Dream - Rubycon 18. Birth Control - Plastic People 19. Queen - A Night at the Opera 20. Nazareth - Hair of the Dog 21. The Tubes - The Tubes 22. UFO - Force It 23. Angel - Angel 24. Triumvirat - Spartacus 25. Thin Lizzy - Fighting 26. Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent 27. Eloy - Power and the Passion 28. Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic 29. Kayak - Royal Bed Bouncer 30. Uriah Heep - Return to Fantasy 31. Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis?
Day 17: "Alive" was released by KISS on the Casablanca Records label in Sept. '75. This double album featured some of their more powerful performances (i.e. Cobo Arena in Detroit) from the three studio LPs. Though augmented with audience noises used to join the performances, "Alive" still translated the power of Kiss's live presence enough to audiences to make a difference. "Alive" reached #9 on the Billboard 200. KISS had captured lightning in a bottle.
Day 17 #15 Fleetwood Mac’s so-called WHITE ALBUM. I somewhat begrudgingly recognized this - being a fan of uncle Bob - but grew to like this record. My fav of the post Bob eras.
I never had this album....only got onto the F/Mac train with Rumours. Then went way back to the Peter Green era. Have so much in between I need to discover
Great pick, had it some days ago. Has become my favourite Rainbow album after all this years. My pick today Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn, his third album. Wonderful creative music from Mike, maybe my favourite from him. A lot of celtic influences but also african drums. Mike plays most of the instruments but here are guests like Paddy Moloney on Uillian Pipes, Terry Oldfield on flute and Sally Oldfield on vocals.
15. Alice Cooper - Welcome to My Nightmare 16. Queen - A Night at the Opera 17. Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks 18. Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow 19. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac 20. AC/DC - T.N.T. 21. Budgie - Bandolier 22. Robin Trower - For Earth Below 23. Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Zuma 24. Steely Dan - Katy Lied 25. Moxy - Moxy 26. Bad Company - Straight Shooter 27. Armageddon - Armageddon 28. Rush - Caress of Steel 29. Styx - Equinox 30. Deep Purple - Come Taste the Band 31. Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis?
My pick for today is The Kinks - Soap Opera. Bashed by the critics. But to quote a Belgian writer, regarding the critics: ´The lion doesn´t care about the lice in his fur.´ I love this album, Ray Davies never cease to amaze me with his great songwriting skills. He has an enormous psychological insight into the everyday concerns of the common man and he lightens it up with his infectious sense of humor. Songs like ´Everybody´s a Star´ ´Rush Hour Blues´ ´Underneath The Neon Sign´ ´Holiday Romance´ ´(A) Face In The Crowd´ prove the critics wrong.
Down to the final 15 and it's getting harder and harder to stack the remaining albums against each other. All of them are so strong. But we do have to make choices, so here goes.......Day 17 / Pick # 15 = NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE - Zuma. Neil was in a pensive and bitter mood, having just gone through a break-up with his girlfriend, actress Carrie Snodgrass. Some of the tunes are kinda hit-or-miss country-inflected ditties, but the strong ones are stellar, a couple of them - epic. Highlights: Cortez the Killer; Danger Bird; and Pardon My Heart.
Day 17 (#15): ZZ Top - Fandango 16. Queen - A Night At The Opera 17. David Bowie - Young Americans 18. Tom Waits - Nighthawks At The Diner 19. Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy; Rock of the Westies 20. Scorpions - In Trance 21. Weather Report - Tale Spinning 22. Return To Forever - No Mystery 23. Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic 24. Electric Light Orchestra - Face The Music 25. Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger 26. Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years 27. Patti Smith - Horses 28. Robin Trower - For Earth Below 29. Herbie Hancock - Man Child; Flood (Live) 30. Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow 31. Bad Company - Straight Shooter
Great pick, Pete! My number 15 Phil Manzanera - Diamond Head 16 Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte 17 Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 18 Thin Lizzy - Fighting 19 The Tubes - The Tubes 20 Hatfield and the North - The Rotters’ Club 21 Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 22 Brian Eno - Another Green World 23 Soft Machine - Bundles 24 Return to Forever featuring Chick Corea - No Mystery 25 Sloche - J'un Oeil 26 Passport - Cross-Collateral 27 Herbie Hancock - Man-Child 28 Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow 29 Roxy Music - Siren 30 Neil Merryweather - Krypronite 31 Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
Day 17: Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery Day 16: Camel - The Snow Goose Day 15: Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti Day 14: Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow Day 13: BÖC - On Your Feet or on Your Knees Day 12: Fleetwood Mac - S/t Day 11: Kebnekaise - Kebnekaise III Day 10: Supertramp - Crisis? David Bowie - Young Americans 22. Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack 23. Kiss - Dressed To Kill 24. Steve Hillage - Fish Rising 25. Grateful Dead - Blues For Allah 26. Van Der Graaf Generator - Godbluff 27. Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water 28. Gentle Giant - Free Hand 29. Kraftwerk - Radio-Activity 30. Soft Machine - Bundles 31. UFO - Force It
My choice for today is Gorilla by James Taylor. It includes the hit Marvin Gaye cover How Sweet It Is but also one of my favorite James Taylor songs, Mexico. It's a great vacation song!
day 17/15 Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions Of The Emerald Beyond. I borrowed this and Inner Mounting Flame from a chum and I was hooked. It got me listening to a whole range of guitarists, a couple of whom will appear on my list later.
Hi everyone, that Friday feeling again, and time for my next pick of a 50 year old album, which sees us back over on this side of the Big Water (where we'll be staying for a few days in fact) and the 2nd album from a British band whose members had cut their teeth in the likes of Mott The Hoople, King Crimson and Free. I know at least one fellow Brit will be nominating this album, possibly right at the very top end of his list - hi Jerry - so I know that I will, eventually be in very Good Company in picking... BAD COMPANY "Straight Shooter" (Island) Honestly, has a British blues-bssed hard rock album ever kicked off with a better one-two salvo than Good Lovin' Gone Bad and Feel Like Making Love? If it has, I can't think of it right now. Weep No More allows you to draw breath while you appreciate its understated subtlety and warm vocal from Paul Rodgers, before the old side A ends with the tour de force that is Shooting Star, the whole tribute to band excelling on Paul's tribute to a fallen rock star - for Johnny, read Jimi. Flip the sucker over and, naturally, it's nigh on impossible to duplicate the near-perfection of side 1, but Deal With The Preacher has a mighty good try, Mick Ralphs' guitar really going to work on this one befire you do get a bit of a dip in qualty with the merely "good" Wild Fire Woman and the only "average" Anna, my least favourite track on the album, before the 6 minute Call On Me sees the bar elevated once again. This was, for me, their best album, with the debut coming in not far behind, and in 3rd, as the rest of their Rodgers era material was quite patchy imho, I'd actually put Holy Water...
Hey Iain, excellent pick! Top five for me this month. I like the albums with Brian Howe and the one they recorded with Robert Hart, but I prefer all the ones from the Rodgers era, except maybe Rough Diamonds.
Great choice today, Pete - also coming up on my list later in the month. Knew that would be in your list somewhere. I'm going with a band today that doesn't get many mentions here on SoT, but which I really love - the Dutch band, Kayak. 1975 saw the release of their third studio album, rejoicing in the weird title of 'Royal Bed Bouncer'. Songs to check out in particular: 'Life of Gold', 'Bury the World' and 'Moments of Joy'. For anyone who doesn't know Kayak, I could describe them as symphonic rock, with some proggy bits, particularly in their early albums like this one. Ton Scherpenzeel, the band's mainstay and only constant member through the years, is a great songwriter and keyboard maestro. 1. Ambrosia - Ambrosia 2. Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts 3. Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama 4. Camel - The Snow Goose 5. Caravan - Cunning Stunts 6. Clannad - Clannad 2 7. The Doobie Brothers - Stampede 8. Eagles - One of These Nights 9. Electric Light Orchestra - Face the Music 10. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac 11. Focus - Mother Focus 12. Gryphon - Raindance 13. Justin Hayward and John Lodge - Blue Jays 14. Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 15. Journey - Journey 16. Kansas - Song for America / Masque 17. Kayak - Royal Bed Bouncer
There were two albums I was looking forward to in 1975 and this was one of them … and this album proved a couple of things… the compositional skills of Blackmore and given the right band mix those compositions translated into exceptional live tunes…Catch the Rainbow on its own on live albums showed why God invented the Strat along with Man on a Silver Mountain, 16th Century, Still I’m Sad and the absolute phenomenal Temple of the King …and one can follow so many of this material into the extraordinary guitar playing by Blackmore in Blackmore’s Night ….
My pick for day 17 is Led Zeppelin : Physical Graffiti. Ritchie Blackmore´s Rainbow makes my list too. And Toys In The Attic most certainly makes my list.
My 15th favorite album of 1975 is Alive - Kiss (Sept. 10). I don't usually include live albums on this list, but... c'mon - it's Kiss. Full List: 31) On The Level - Status Quo (Feb. 21) 30) The Hissing Of Summer Lawns - Joni Mitchell (Nov. ?) 29) Hair Of The Dog - Nazareth (April 3) 28) In Trance - Scorpions (Sept 17) 27) Venus And Mars - Wings (May 30) 26) Fly By Night - Rush (Feb. 14) 25) Red Octopus - Jefferson Starship (June 13) 24) Marcus Garvey - Burning Spear (Dec. 12) 23) Force It - UFO (July 1) 22) A Night At The Opera - Queen (Nov. 21) 21) Horses - Patti Smith (Nov. 10) 20) Come Taste The Band - Deep Purple (Nov. 7) 19) Pressure Drop - Robert Palmer (Nov. 1) 18) Another Green World - Brian Eno (Nov. 14) 17) Tonight's The Night - Neil Young (June 20) 16) Welcome To My Nightmare - Alice Cooper (Feb. 28) 15) Alive - Kiss (Sept. 10)
Going with a country guy today! One of my favorite country artists Gary Stewart with Out of Hand. Of course this album features 4 of his biggest tunes in I See the Want You In Your Eyes,Drinkin Thing,Shes Actin Single, and the title track. Other highlights would be Honky Tonkin and closer Williamson County

BATTLE ROYALE #17 BETWEEN FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 1975 & 2024 For this series and all the annual series to follow, I’ve come up with an accurate grading system that allows for an exacting point grading system to determine where a recording accurately falls from best to worst in my personal album collection for that particular year. Here’s that system: F=0; D-=1; D=2; D+=3; C-=4;C=5;C+=6; B-=7; B=8; B+=9; A-=10; A-11; A+=12. For me, the first two Kansas albums would be on my list for such a series. I didn’t care for “Song For America” at all. Over the course of many years…well, see the above grading above for yourself. CUMULATIVE ALBUM SCORE IS 59/6 SONGS=9.833 (B+) Coming in at #15 for favorite albums of 2024…HELL, FIRE AND DAMNATION by SAXON NOTE: Every song on this album is of the heavy metal genre. Winner of today’s Battle Royale is HELL, FIRE AND DAMNATION by SAXON BATTLE ROYALE SCORECARD TO DATE: 1974:2 2024:15
Hi Andy, I am not all that up on the Saxon catalogue, so not sure about who would be the winner of this particular contest, but Kansas' Song For America is pretty solid. i picked it last week.
I love both choices today. The Saxon album was very good. It finished # 14 on my EOY list. I rated somewhere between a 9 and 9.5. I though the new guitarist from Diamond Head added a lot to their sound.
Day 17. Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band. 😃👍. Tommy Bolin and David Coverdale. What could be wrong? It has been my unsung hero album. I have the 30th Anniversary 2-CD Set (released in 2010). Tommy Bolin is out of sight and he was on fire on this album! His ghostly vocals in the break in “Dealer” freaked me out. I find this album a highly entertaining ever-cool slightly funky rocker. 🔥. Is it Deep Purple or not? Don’t dis Tommy B. Rock Always! - Heather
There is no way on Earth Toys in the Attic isn't one of the top 31 albums from 1975, especially for the kinds of records appreciated on this channel. Come on Pete.
Today's pick is Scorpions-In Trance. My favorite Scorpions record albeit in a close battle with Virgin Killer and Taken By Force. Great performances by Klaus Meine, Uli Roth and Rudolph Schenker including memorable highlights like "Dark Lady", "In Trance", "Top Of The Bill" and "Robot Man".

17) Ian Hunter - Ian Hunter
Ian Hunter did one of the best live gigs I've ever seen at a club called Fast Lane in Asbury Park, NJ in June of '79.
1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver
2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel
3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand
4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser

12) Angel - S/T
13) Crack The Sky - S/T
14) Rush - Fly By Night
15) Grand Funk Railroad - Caught In The Act
16) KISS - Alive!
17) Ian Hunter - S/T
great choice christopher, ian had a string of good albums then , and the live album he did was awesome
Excellent choice, article and list, Christopher. Another album that I "borrowed" from my brothers.
My pick today as well
Excellent choice. Once bitten I never tire of hearing.
@@shaunogle530 Thanks Shaun.
Hi Jeffrey. Excellent pick and write up
Superb pick Jeff, coming to my list soon.
Superb choice.
Excellent pick Jeffrey.
The rerecording is also worthwhile. Saw them in a small venue on the Breathless tour.
For day 17, my next 1975 pick is (in alphabetical order)
DEEP PURPLE, “Come Taste The Band”.

My Day 17 pick is an album released on September 1975 and recorded in July-August 1975 at
Can-Base (Vancouver) and produced by Mike Flicker. He did, however, continue to produce for Heart.[18]
The relationship broke down completely when the label bought a full-page ad in Rolling Stone, mocked up like a National Enquirer front page.[19] The ad used a photo similar to the one on the Dreamboat Annie album cover, showing Ann and Nancy back to back with bare shoulders. The caption under the photo read, "It Was Only Our First Time!" The band had not been consulted and was furious with the double meaning of the caption.[20]
Since the label could no longer provide Flicker as producer as the contract specified, the band took the position that they were free to move to another label and signed with Portrait Records. Mushroom insisted that the band was still bound to the contract which called for two albums. So, Mushroom released Magazine with incomplete tracks, studio outtakes and live material and a disclaimer on the cover.[21]
The band got a federal injunction to stop distribution of the 1977 edition of Magazine. Most of the initial 50,000 pressings were recalled from stores. The court eventually decided that the band could sign with Portrait, but that they did owe Mushroom a second album. The band returned to the studio to re-record, remix, edit, and re-sequence the recordings. Magazine was re-released in 1978 and sold a million copies in less than a month.[22]
Shelly Siegel, the promoter behind the "First Time" ad and vice president of the record label, died a few months after the re-release, and Mushroom Records went bankrupt two years later.

#15 Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac
Finally, the formula for success for an already veteran and talented but unsuccessful group was that Bob Welch left to start his solo career and the incorporation of guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks. Fair doses of hooky rock and pop. Unforgettable songs like “Rhiannon” and “I'm So Afraid” are instant hits.

ROBIN TROWER FOR EARTH BELOW. Dewar’s vocals are the perfect accompaniment to Trower’s guitar. Picking out favourite tracks is difficult, but two I particularly like are It’s only money and the title track. Brilliant Trower.

@@shaunogle530 hi Shaun. Excellent pick and article
Love your pick and song choices, Shaun.
Excellent pick, Shaun. You're so right about Jimmy Dewar's superb vocals.
My Day 17 Pick:
Rush - Caress of Steel
The band's second album from 1975, and their third overall.
Right there with you Mark, I do like All these songs.
Camel . The Snow Goose. Saw them perform the whole album in London in 75.
Lucky man ! they where at their peak at that time.

A Night at the Opera!
I'm trying to rank the final 15, is how they fit into my music journey.
After Killer Queen broke through as a top 20,

Band adds harp ukulele, jangle, piano, timpani and double bass, multitrax vocals and guitars to become orchestral metal, you have the newest.

The album covered a range of styles including hard rock, progressive rock, rock 'n' roll and folk.[3] The album was then mixed over summer 1974 and planned for an end-of-year release; however, its release was delayed because the Peter Corriston-designed die-cut album cover proved difficult to manufacture. wiki

Back then I had gotten the vinyl with the die cut windows cover.
# 15 Van der Graaf Generator: Godbluff
After his solo album “Nadir's Big Chance”, this is the second record from the year 1975 with the participation of Peter Hammill to appear in my ranking. As always with VdGG, “Godbluff” is a tremendously intense record that almost takes your breath away. It consists of only 4 songs and lasts less than 40 minutes, but feels like a work lasting several hours (which is a positive thing here).

My pick: Paul McCartney & Wings - Venus and Mars
@@milesdorst7120 Excellent pick Miles!
15. Funkadelic - Let's Take It To The Stage
Funkadelic gets the edge here over the more highly regarded Parliament album because I prefer Funkadelic's more eclectic approach to psychedelic rock, soul and funk.

Super album choice there, I'm So Afraid is one of my favourite Fleetwood Mac songs.

Bought it on 8 track
Great write-up Jerry. This album is a classic.

Welcome to my Nightmare Alice Cooper

BAD COMPANY "Straight Shooter" (Island)
Honestly, has a British blues-bssed hard rock album ever kicked off with a better one-two salvo than Good Lovin' Gone Bad and Feel Like Making Love?
Classic album Iain! I don't have the actual album, but do have most of the tracks on a Bad Co. boxset. Great stuff
Difficult second album? Not for these guys. Great follow up to an almost perfect album.

BATTLE ROYALE #17 BETWEEN FAVORITE ALBUMS OF 1975 & 2024
For this series and all the annual series to follow, I’ve come up with an accurate grading system that allows for an exacting point grading system to determine where a recording accurately falls from best to worst in my personal album collection for that particular year. Here’s that system: F=0; D-=1; D=2; D+=3; C-=4;C=5;C+=6; B-=7; B=8; B+=9; A-=10; A-11; A+=12.
Coming in at #15 for favorite albums of 1975…SONG FOR AMERICA by KANSAS

4-LONELY STREET (BLUES) A

6-INCOMMUDRO-HYMN TO THEALTMAN (PROG ROCK) B+
A few months back, I gave Pete Pardo a suggestion for a month long series that consists of albums that have for one reason or another, grown mightily in esteem over the course of time. For me, the first two Kansas albums would be on my list for such a series. I didn’t care for “Song For America” at all. Over the course of many years…well, see the above grading above for yourself.
CUMULATIVE ALBUM SCORE IS 59/6 SONGS=9.833 (B+)

BATTLE ROYALE SCORECARD TO DATE:
1974:2
2024:15
Excellent, I really dig the new Saxon album. Match #4!
Cheers to another 2024 victory. 🎉
Can't argue with that score. Andy!
Even though I'm not that big on Kansas I give 'em the win here (since the opponent is Saxon). 1975 is a perfect 17-0
