Pete, you explained your reasoning for making the cut length and rough grading decisions just fine. Thanks for taking us along so we can learn a bit about what goes into the process.

Thanks. One of coolest ones yet. Love hearing how and why. I wish I could hear the how and why of each log I get for firewood. Just one tri axle load a year. Lots of story in 20 face cord. Lol. I know it’s just trash wood but it turns into treasure for me. Keep up the good work!

    Hey Nutty,
Interesting process. I've seen you with DP and CK but I won't hold that against you.... I got to observe a logger similar to you who harvested a bunch of walnut and white oak in a hollow very near me. You've explained some things I didn't understand about his work. He took some 10 or 15 semi loads of walnut out of the hollow.... That was five years ago. Good Luck!!!

Thanks Pete. Really interesting to hear you thoughts. I always struggle with bucking the logs I take out of my forest. We have almost the same mix of species here in S. Central PA as you cut.

I pretty much understood everything you were explaining and it did help me understand what you are focused on. I have a small manual sawmill and everything possible goes on the mill. Whatever doesn't make lumber just feeds the fireplace. I use all the lumber i make myself but if I ever get to a time when I have wood to sell what you explained makes sense. My neighbor had a big mill and he had contacts for cabinet grade and railroad tie output. He died two hrs ago so I lost my market info. Sometimes I think the buyers have such narrow focus they forget there are other people doing other things with wood. mrg
