One doubt mam... In 1st question,why shouldn't we use 'had been waiting' since he was waiting till she arrived, once she arrived (from tat point) he may not wait.

At that point of time, he was not watching TV. We use the past continuous to say that something was happening or not happening at a particular point of time in the past. We use the simple past tense for complete past actions and the past continuous for incomplete past actions. Did you watch TV yesterday? No, I didn't. Were you watching TV when he came home? No, I wasn't. I was sleeping.
