    Using Micarta is a great way to show the technique, thanks! It really helped me understand how to get it right.

    I started watching your videos about 2 years ago. It seems that as I encounter a new challenge you release a video to help me. Thanks very much for going through all this effort to help new makers and experienced alike!

    That was a nice demonstration and the explanation was quite clear. The micarta sure showed a lot. Thanks.

    Really learned a lot from this segment. Would love to see your technique for sharpening the recurve blade edge.

    Walter, thank you so much for creating this video. It is exactly what I was looking for. My technique grinding recurve blades has been wrong from the start. No matter how much I practiced, with the wrong technique I was never going to get the grind to come out correctly. I now have proper technique and will be practicing this over and over until I can get it right. Again, thank you.

    This was seriously the video I needed. Been working on a pair of big 15" choppers with traditional points, and was struggling so bad with the curve at the tip. I'd been trying to turn the whole knife, so hopefully that distal shift will be just what I need!

    Not a beginner project my first knife was a slight recurve, and am in the process of making two more as a matching set and am still in my first ten knives. I've found that touching up the bevels by draw filing them is a good way as a beginner to get them right. Remove as much material on the belt sander as you feel comfortable with and then draw file in sections to get the bevels well defined, not saying this will work for everyone but it is what has worked for me.

    Great tips! I have a 4x36 grinder that I bolt a piece of 1/4" aluminum to and will probably find a way to make different contoured plates to change out for different curves.

    Great info!
    Thank you Walter.
    I live in Alaska, I tried to order my grinder belts from Combat Abrasives. Unfortunately they charge an arm and a leg to ship to Alaska.
    So I get my grinder belts from Red Label Abrasives. Free shipping. Great belts and made in the USA.

    Thank you for the infro Walter. I have one question though, how is do you grind a nice curve at the plunge line closer to the spine? You can see this in the recurve blank you ground. There is a nice curve from the plunge line to the top of the bevel.

    Walter, is there a reason to buy a bench grinder if you have a belt grinder? Just wondering.

  • @wyndalarnold7632
    @wyndalarnold7632 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am interested in making knives, the knives I make now are basically on a bench grinder. I am fairly pleased with my product, but I would like to take it to the next lever. First, I need a recommendation for a good starter grinder. VR

    Walter, I've noticed that a lot of blacksmiths on Forged in Fire will choose a re-curved blade to make. With only 3 hours why wouldn't they choose a simpler grind? Same with handles, why attempt something hard when the goal should be sharp and pointy?

    Dude... I love your videos but can you say something to combat abrasives your name is tied to them and their building up a shitty reputation. They are the slowest shipping company I have ever dealt with. They're ridiculous. They finally shipped after I asked for a refund. I also have a buddy that said it took him a month to get his stuff so it's not just me. When you've got knives you have to get out you just can't wait like that

      It may be that Walter's fanbase is large enough that they can't cope with the new order volume. Seen that happen before when a sponsorship or an add campaign turns out to be toooooo successful, for a small company. Shame really, for something to be too much of a success, if that's what's happened.
