DIY Pedal Building - How To Build A Bazzfuss Guitar Fuzz Pedal

  • Now then, hope you are having a great day. Today we are building a Bazzfuss. One of the simplest fuzz circuits of all time but also one great sounding pedal! The circuit itself uses 6 components. A 10K resistor. A transistor (mpsa13, BC108c, 2N5088 are all great). A 220nf capacitor. A 4.7uf capacitor. A 47uf capacitor. And finally a 5mm red LED.
    You can find all of these parts readily available online from electronic component shops, ebay etc.
    You can also find full kits for this build on pedal building websites such as Fuzzdog, Jedspeds, buildyourownclone etc.
    A little disclaimer, I am a time served engineer and am comfortable with using a soldering iron. If you would like to get into building your own pedals (I guess the reason you are watching this is because you are) then please ensure you are feeling confident in using a soldering iron, if not, do some practice first. Ensure you are soldering in good light and have spare components just incase. Also, have fun!

    It doesn't mention about wiring the potentiometer up. I thought it did, sorry about that. You want to wire pot lug 1 to ground and then pot lug 2 to your output.

    Note that the "front end" of the EHX/JHS "Lizard Queen" pedal IS a Bazzfuss. It feeds a Tim Escobedo Push-Me-Pull-You octave circuit. The stock Lizard Queen connects them directly, but it is a relatively simple matter to wire up a toggle that bypasses the octaving part and takes the Bazzfuss part directly to the volume control.

    I like to use the 1N4001 diode. The red LEDs have good touch sensitivity, but they sound a bit mid-heavy to me. They work good as hard clipping diodes in an op-amp distortion.

      Great video man. This is perfect timing with where I’m at with my pedal building experience. I received a few (unprinted) pcb’s. They are the plastic boards with each hole being insulated or tinned already. (Not vero or perf board.)
      I guess my question is how do I build on these boards compared to vero board?

    strange, this tone sounds similar to a General Fuzz from Outlaw Effects. But using a silicon transistor, there is gaping in the clips like a germanium transistor. Rockon

    That’s super helpful. That’s maybe easier than using the PCB for a foot switch that I had assumed was the way to go for a beginner!

    I've stripped out the components from a bunch of knackered energy saver bulbs and led bulbs and there are some useful components. I could probably make some sort of effects circuit just from the bits out of those light bulbs alone lol.

    Wow! Wonderful BazzFuzz. I too had a problem understanding the Vol3 marking. I add two Vol=100K potentiometers. One on the input side and the other on the output side. I think the circuit has too much gain from the Darlington transistor. This made the tone easier to control. Thanks for the video. Good luck building your channel, cheers.

      If you add a 100 Ohm resistor between the emitter and ground it really smooths it out.

    Thanks for the video.
    I have made several bazz fess pedals but change the circuit by replacing the film capacitor for lower value for more treble and mids. I actually get a big Muff type sound. Volume,fuzz,bias input volume ( replaces Guitar volume) and tone controls. Also two MPSA13 transistors piggyback together.

      @@goliathfx awesome video! I just subscribed to your channel. I do have a question for you. I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to PCBs but I have a pre made Dwarfcraft Shiva fuzz PCB which comes with 3 silicon transistors soldered on the board; could I solder an additional 3 extra transistors to the PCB? Would it make it more fuzzier? More harsher? And feedback more? I’m looking to make a crazy, noisy fuzz pedal

      Hey BigMuff, no I wouldn't add additional transistors, not unless the schematic calls for it. If your looking to make crazy, gated, feedbacky type noises then look at replacing some fixed resistors with potentiometers. Especially Emitter and Collector resistors, these will starve the transistors of voltage and unbias them etc which will give real gated noises.

    I have started down the rabbit hole of seeking the perfect fuzz, diy.... this really isn't bad at all! The best I've ever heard was this 3 knob Hendrix era monster called the BUM Fuzz Unit (heh).....if I can make one sound like that, I'll be happy.

    I recently saw a guy on videos using a blob of blu tack to hold whatever he was soldering. It seems its a really good way to hold stuff steady that you're soldering. I bought a couple of packets of non brand blu tack from tesco today for £1.50 a pack and its a navy blue and not the light blue that the proper brand is. Well pleased with it lol

    I like the tone. I'm building a similar circuit. How would I mod this so it doesn't sort of cut out at the end of a note as it resonates? This is my second pedal build. Just wondering if possible how to get it to resonate out a little more instead of being gated from lack of better terms. Thanks and great channel. Subscribed.

      You wanna look at dual transistor fuzzes for that. This is a super basic circuit that are the building blocks for more advanced pedals.

    Sounds great. I like the gated sound this gives. Would you know how to ad a control for the gate? What about a 6.8uf switch and adding a mid switch boost like some do to big muffs? Thanks for sharing!

      Yeah the gated sound is kinda what this circuit is known for. To add a control you would need to substitute a potentiometer for the 10k resistor as this sets the amount of voltage the transistor gets on the collector. a 6.8u cap on the input would only effect the frequencies and not the gate. This circuit essentially doesn't have a tone control, so you wouldn't be able to add a mids switch really without first adding a tone control. Thats simple enough to do but obviously defeats the point of this small parts count, aggressive little fuzz. There are a few BazzFuss schematics online for a Deluxe version that have a few additions if you wanted to check them out. Cheers for watching and the questions.

    awesome build! quick question, if i want to add a tone/gain pot and keep the volume pot (2 pots) in which part of the circuit goes and what value should i use? thanks for sharing this!

      Hey thanks for checking it out, to add a tone stage you would need to look at a tone section on say a Big Muff or the Bandaxal etc and use a value calculator depending on what frequancies you want to boost/cut etc. I'm not quite sure what they would be. There are a few Bazzfuss Deluxe schematics around that have a BMP tone stack on them. Have fun.

      I have added a Fuzz control to the emitter (where brown diode and emitter leg meet. Volume control on output and input.
      Still researching tone control but it goes on input and I think asdds another capacitor of lower value. Not sure if in series or parallel.

    1) what is the yellowish board called on which you mounted the components?
    2) How to make the connections ( input/output) after the circuit is completed.

    How does the *R1 (10k)* influence the sound? ( I mean, if I _change the value,_ how will the sound be _different?_ )
    Same question about *C1* and *C3.*

      Cheers, best thing is to experiment. The 10K is what controls the voltage to the transistor, lowering the resistance should allow more voltage, increasing the resistance will lower the voltage.

    Hey man! Looking to get into building pedals. I was wondering, could you make a video of doing the offboard wiring? I build the circuits almost perfectly but then I lose it when it comes to hooking it up to the jacks and the pots etc

      Hey man, yeah I intend to do a full build series very, very soon! From drilling and painting enclosures to fitting pots, building the boards etc to final product. Most likely use a kit board from my buddy at Five Cats.

    im very new to building pedals here, so the "d" line on the pcb is a ground throughout the whole d-line, correct? If that is the case, then would I land the ground pin on the volume pot to the d-line, as well as the ground for the audio in, and audio outs and the 9v power supply?

      ALSO.... what component in this build controls the majority of the tone? I would like to add a tiny breadboard on that section so i can pop in and out different capacitors or transistors to try out different sounds

      Yes you are correct, the whole row is ground, but, it will get very cluttered with Earth wires. What I do is chain the earth from the 9v to the jacks etc and footswitch. You can see how I do it in another video on here called how I wire a footswitch.

    The diagram showed the ins but where does the out go? Sorry if that seems like a stupid question I'm just building one now and never made anything on stripboard like this

      The out is from your volume pot, lug 2. Hope that helps

    When you mean output for lug 2 ,is it output on 3PDT or output on jack?

      Output goes to the board output lug on the footswitch.

    If lug 2 is out as you said in an earlier comment where does lug 1 go ? I find those vero board pictures confusing as there always seem be something missing! Whether it be wiring or where certain wires go to which lugs.

      Vol lug one goes to ground. I would highly recommend going to watch how I wire a footswitch and earth loop vids as they explain it a little.

    do the caps have to be electrolytic?

      C1 doesn't, this can be any value really but the lower you go the less bass that will go through the circuit, 100nf, 220nf should be fine. C3 is a power filtering cap, you don't need this if you don't want but you will probably get a lot of noise in the finally signal without it. Hope that helps.

      As long as the rating is above the power supply voltage then it can be anywhere between 16v and 400v. Hope that helps.

      I would say give it a go, going higher in value will change the frequencies that are flowing through the circuit. Higher number usually equals more bass.

      Hi, not that I am aware, the Bazzfuss is a building block for loads of other fuzzes. Which red box? The diode is red and the cut in the veroboard is red.

    in the video you say your attaching a 4.7uf cap but you put it in the place of C3, and then the 47uf in C1. The diagram however is labeled the other way around.... explanation?

      Not much to explain, picked up the wrong cap, however, it makes little difference, one is for power filtering and is optional anyway and the other is the input cap to allow larger frequencies through and DC filtering again, this value can be anything from 10nf to 100uf. It makes no odds if I put the caps in the wrong spots the circuit still works and still sounds the way it does. This is just a demonstration on the actual build process. If someone can follow a vero diagram then they will be fine with this.

    i am doing a point to point bazz fuzz (without pcb) and i cant find a schematic with the C3 on it, what is it for? Where should i connect it?

      C3 is a power filtering cap. It goes between your 9V and ground. It's completely optional.

      Your not drilling fully through, but breaking the strip. It's so you can place components that are in different parts of the circuit, on the same row, without them conducting etc

      Vol 3 goes to lug 3, vol 2 goes from lug 2 to output, vol 1 lug goes to ground, thought it said it on full picture bit it doesn't. Sorry about that.

    This is cool, sounds pretty cool, but would cost me $50 on Amzon for all the parts even after I found the cheapest I could find. I could just buy a Berringher SF300 for $20.

      Then don't buy them on Amazon, you can build this entire pedal with enclosure and jacks for less than $20 by visiting a hardware shop and eBay
      The SF300 is awesome tho, but this isn't the same circuit.

      You've lost me a little there. I've never known of caps having their cases grounded. Certainly not in any circuits or builds I've done. Would love to hear more on this.

      @@goliathfx I'll let Mr. Carlson explain it to you. Non electrolytic caps have an outside foil that can pick up frequencies if installed backwards in a circuit. Causing noise.       Intresting, however in your first comment you say the outer shield needs to go to ground, which is incorrect. Thats partly what threw me. But Carlson is talking about old caps for the most part. Modern caps have two end plates with their componds in the centre, not many have the outside foil wrap connected to one pin like he mentions. If they did, and did indeed cause these issues then you would most likely be paying triple, maybe even quadruple for all of your electronic items to pay sorting the correct orientation of the film caps. If it was that much of a problem then these caps would be marked in the factory with correct orientation.       @@goliathfx well Carlson said the shield goes to the chassis. Which is usually ground. But he also says shield goes to the lower output side of an audio signal. Any capacitor that has an outside foil. Many new ones have it as well as the old ones. Orange drops and other "drops" as well as polypropylene etc. Those are capacitors we use in guitar amplifiers. I would think an effect pedal would qualify since a guitar signal goes through the circuit. Obviously your video shows an outside shield in the first few seconds. His point is that they are not marked from the factory. Did you watch the full video? Paying triple or quadruple? That makes no sense. You are just orientating them for less noise and interference. He's talking about brand new caps that aren't marked.

      @@knowmusicman157 I meant the cost would increase in labour time needed to sort through capacitors. Be that as it may, maybe in high current devices you'd get some stray inductance that could cause a bit of noise but the magnetic field would be tiny, in amps probably cause noise but I don't know any amp builders who grade caps this way. I'll have to ask them. In pedals we are talking milliamps, the current generated is so small the situation would just not occur.

    I made one of these also, and it does the same thing where it doesnt pick up some notes. Anyone know what the deal is with that?

      That will probably be the bias of the circuit. Either that or the gain. Its a super simple circuit and not very refined so don't expect it to be a beautifully clean fuzz, its certainly not. But it could be refined for sure.

      I get that, What would i have to do to bias the circuit, Try different resistor values? It sounds pretty good as long as we could get the full spectrum of notes to be picked up. Ha. @@goliathfx

      You would need to add more components to get it so sound how your wanting. But then I'd just evolve it upto say a Coloursound One Knob fuzz. Which is essentially a FuzzFace with no fuzz control. To refine the bazzfuss a bit more in its current state, You would need to add a resistor to the emitter on the transitor to ground. Something around 1k would tame the gain. Also add a resistor in series after the input cap to tame some signal going into the gain stage. There are lots of other mods you could do but it will take away from what this circuit is actually meant to be.
