On top of this being an excellent video on "hacking" the amp boards into an awesome fuzz pedal, this is also one of the best explained videos on how to wire up pretty much any pedal. You were very thorough and detailed in the whys and hows of doing things, like routing the bypass, setting up both battery and dc in and grounding things. I am going to use this video as an example in the future when people have questions about these things. Heck I wish I had seen thing video years ago when I started messing around with doing this stuff and was confused as to what goes where and especially why. Thanks!!!

In addition to cleaning soldering iron & surfaces to be soldered, rosin core solder & soldering flux makes soldering secure connections 10 times easier, by preventing oxidation from forming in the joints simultaneously with the soldering.

I had actually bought 10 of these last year to reuse the radio pcb of a broken old portable TV. It was cheaper buying the ten of them than only one unit. Might try it. Also gonna make a headphones amp, with a simple fet preamp

Hey I've built this pedal using a 2.7k resistor for the led, today I've discovered that whenever I turn off the pedal it takes a while before any clean signal comes through it :/ What do you think might be the problem? I've wired the footswitch a bit differently than what you have showed, following a schematic I found on reddit but it is very similar, just the led is not in the middle row but at the top row. I'm also thinking about adding a resistor to the max volume because it is VERY loud and not usable if you want to switch between clean and fuzzy. Do you have any recommendations for this problem? Thanks for the love 🤗 put a potentiometer like a volume control on your guitar on it going from the out of the circuit to the switch them you can find the volume you want then if you don't want to keep the pot you can switch it out for a resistor with the same value as what the pot is set to once it is where you like it 👍it is hard for me to know if there is something wrong with the wiring for the switch but I built the same pedal again yesterday and I used a 3,3k resistor and I don't have any problem so either there is something wrong with the borde or you need to change the wiring to the switch. The trimmer pots were supposed to be 1 K, it's even written on them (103 means 1 K :) ) They're just of crappy tolerance that's why you measure 750 ohms :)

thank you 🍻 this only saves the battery when the jack is not plugged in because the physical ground connection is created between dc in and the battery ground once the plug is inside that's why I use a stereo jack. I'm unsure this is what you mean but hopes it helps 😀
There are loads of these little modules on Amazon that do different things. The possibilities are endless to designing your own pedal. You don't need Josh Scott or Brian Wampler anymore. 😂
I was just wondering, what is the actual advantage of linking 2 of these LM386s together like this. I've made a few different ones using just one. Started with that one simplest version with no footswitch, or gain control, or anything like that (like from that 1st original $1 fuzz video I saw). Then I started doing more tweaking with them. Added the gain control, the footswitch, and the LED, like in this video. I just did one last night where I also added a volume knob. I've just been using little plastic containers to put them in cuz that's all I really have around the house that works for now. They are all pretty noisy and simple, but I'm just getting into pedal building, so these have all just been practice until I work my way up to building some real, usable, stage-ready pedals. So yeah, I've got 2 of these LM386s left and was just wondering how linking them together would be different from any of the other ones I've already made.
Well to me they sound bigger,lauder and more like a "real pedal" should if that helps if you have to just like them and see what you think the benefit of having 2 in 1 is just less canles so noise will go down witch is good on something so noisy
@@zurowetz OK. I kinda figured it would make it sound a little louder and fuller. I was wondering how it would affect the noise level, so anything that might help that would be a bonus. Other than the noise I actually like the way they sound, especially for what it is. So yeah, I'll give that a try, but find something better to put it in rather than a cheap, plastic box. In the original $1 fuzz video by MarkGutierrez, he linked them together to create something similar to an EQD Acapulco Gold since that pedal is really just two LM386s in series and not much else.
Thanks for the awesome video. I gave this a try. When I connect the 1k pot I find the volume is very low and it never really distorts. If I increase the value of the pot to say 10k, I get better distortion but at some point when sweeping the pot, I get a lot of noise. I don't have it soldered yet, I'm using jumpers with alligator clips to make the connections. Any help would be appreciated.
Yeah its very noisy if you use 2 and leave the trimpot on one you can adjust it so you get less noise but you will not get everything done also having short cables inside the pedal will help and if you can use insulated cables that would help too 🙂 thanks for the comment and good luck 👍
@@zurowetz When I combined two, I was able to go back to the 1k pot. I'm assuming the 1k with just one board was not enough gain. Two in stages is over the top...lol. So, I cut the trimpot down to almost off on the first stage. That lets me control the overall volume with the single pot. Still have a degree of hiss but I attribute that to gain.
I think it might be worth building if you lowered the initial voltage and added dual gain control and swapped the opamp chips and added a tone stack . On second thought 😂
I built one today and had this high pitch squeal that wouldn't end, but I'll try again soon. I assume I had a ground issue. I also tried 2 tone pots which was overkill. You can also get tiny heat sinks for the chips if you really want to maintain consistency in control. I also found the chips drive an 8 or 16 ohm speaker, best. 4 just rolls off with no real boost. Anyway, that was my journey so far! .Hope you're all doing well!
I love pdals/effects, but I have OCD and only like Boss compact or twin pedal designs. I'm looking for broken/cheap Boss pedals to use the housings to build my own pedals into them.

Can you make a video of wiring the 2 lm386 boards in parallel with a toggle switch instead of in series so that there will be an option to switch from 1 lm386 board to 2 lm386 boards for different levels of fuzziness if that makes sense? Hahaha
Genuine question: If this is really all that a stompbox is inside, and any schmuck with a screw driver can put one together, how are manufacturers putting 3 digit price tags on these things?
Well this is just one pedal and some are more difficult and also it can take a lot of time to design a pedal and make it perfect . Also there are other costs to manufacturing that you don't see when you just do diy pedals. I tried to start my own business building guitars that were hand made and luxury quality but super cheap and after going through all the extra cost I just couldn't make it for less than 3k$ hope this helps 😊
I built one of these and it worked for a day and then stopped working. Used the rest to the same result. The boards just output white noise now! I wonder if these are just bad boards or if I missed something
They are cheap parts from china so there are most likly bad boards but not in a bag of 10s its hared to say if you dig something wrong but it sounds like there is a problem with the power in
Can anyone explain to me the difference in potentiometer values? For this lm386 module, what would be the difference if i use like a 100k or maybe 250k pot instead of 1k.
One of the fun parts is trying things out and see if you switch out the 10k pot for a 1k it wouldn't be able to restraine it as much anything under 10k you already have in it so just use a multimeter to set it to one 1k and you will see 🙂👍when it comes to 100k maybe it will let more gane through or maybe it will go to 10k and then be nothing more after because it is its limite 🤷♂️ try it and see I don't know what I used in all my lm386 pedals but if you want to I can check 🙂

Depends on what you mean you can use to stereo Jacks and just use on as a mono by not conecting anything to the right side output. But you can't make it in to a stereo pedal at least not White what I'm showing you in this video

Dude I did this literally 5 times with the same boards, not mixed together like yours just the one, and did this step by step. Can't get it to work. Literally the l.e.d worked for a five second period even and quit. I can show you a picture. I'm telling you I followed this perfectly. Now that said I've built pedals from veroboard, I made pre laid out pcb, I bought diy pedal kits, and something everyone on TH-cam is sharing doesn't work regarding pedals, so I looked up words and not video, followed multiple offboard wiring diagrams.... still no pedal I make works despite how closely I follow yours or anyone else's directions. So what do I do? Well I go to the one person in person in a small shit town town I reside in... what does he tell me to do? Well to follow the same diagrams I already have for 2 months....offer to show him a picture oof what I'm doing tells me there is no need. Sends me the offboard wiring diagram like yours only the ground and the l.e.d spot switched which is commo and is the "easiest" offboard wiring diagram. Literally nothing I'm doing works. I'm 600 dollars into a hobby with over 10 pedals "built" and once I introduce a l.e d light and footswitch it won't work. Even the diy pedals kits with instructions that I then looked up 3 different youtubers building step by step to like your video where I can almost recite it word for word... still nothing. I'm not trying to come off angry at you, but there is something the youtube community is missing as far as info because I'm not a stranger to a soldering gun and electronics. I've built multiple synths, lofi mics, I can get these lm 386 boards to work when following marks video.. not yours, and no one making diy pedals on TH-cam and I literally have no one in person to help me trouble shoot. I thought this would be a fun musical hobby and I've never had anything musically related piss me off more. I know whatever I'm doing is something small because it acts like it wants to work, and it tries, but then the led will work once and die, and I'm using a 2.2k resistor and then no sound sounds like it's coming from the input, and again I'm not a stranger to doing this kind of thing... so ... 🤷♀️ I'm about to throw all my pedal related shit in the garbage. All the electrical components and veroboard, the wire, the soldering iron... I just wasted a ton of money on a hobby I can't for the life of me figure out, and have no helpful way to trouble shoot. 2 months of nothing but frustration
hallo I'm sorry to hear you are having problems with your builds, believe me I have bin there too it can be vary frustrating but once you figure it out it will be even more rewarding for you. so please don't give up. it sound like a power issue I'm in EU and we have standardized powers so it might be different for you? if so maybe looking in to how that works might help. do you get another respond when using a 9v battery? check the power adapter and see if the + and - are the same as on the power in. the way I do it in the video is the way it is in most cases but you might have to flip them if your power adaptor is not made for guitar pedals. check continuity with a multimeter and make sure all solder joints are clean and well connected. measure the resistor and make sure it works as it should and try the LED with a 1,3 battery to see if it burned, if it did you need a higher resistor. last thing that I can think of is see if you are making a ground loop by putting on the lid, it happens some time with DIY pedals that something is touching something and so what I do and you can see it inn other videos of mine is that I putt the PCB in a plastic bag on the inside and put tape on the lid so nothing can touch the metal. I really hope this helps and that you won't stop building pedals good luck and take care!
I'm afraid it's part of the hobby, I've been building and selling pedals mixers and drone synths for a few years and I have "The Shel of Shonk" put all of the "failed items on it, once you think you can't go any further. One day you'll learn something new, have a flash of inspiration or new vigour and return to an item with fresh eyes. You'll fix the item. It'll work properly and you'll feel like the big Kahuna solder King. It's just part of the process. Never throw anything away. Always be prepared to walk away.
Greetings Zurowetz, The idea to make a distortion pedal out of a couple of LM386 board is interesting. However there are 4 major flaws in your pedal. 1 - If you wish to be compatible with other pedals, you will need to wired the guitar input on the left side, not the right side. 2 - I would suggest to make the wiring longer so you can make things tidy. 3 - It is extremely important to pay attention to the soldering. I noticed some cold solders. This can make your circuit intermittent or not function properly. 4 - There is a gain pot on one of the PCB. This will need to be adjusted to 1 volt on the output. If you fail to do this, you may end up burning the LM386 on the second stage (second board). The nominal output voltage must be 1 volt since this is going to your amplifier. Do not exceed 2 volts because you may blow your power amp input stage on a long run.

Both vcc are for the battery and both need power so make a jumper from one to the other 👍 you also need a ground between them. Good luck!

I built one today and had this high pitch squeal that wouldn't end, but I'll try again soon. I assume I had a ground issue. I also tried 2 tone pots which was overkill. You can also get tiny heat sinks for the chips if you really want to maintain consistency in control. I also found the chips drive an 8 or 16 ohm speaker, best. 4 just rolls off with no real boost. Anyway, that was my journey so far! .Hope you're all doing well!

I love pdals/effects, but I have OCD and only like Boss compact or twin pedal designs. I'm looking for broken/cheap Boss pedals to use the housings to build my own pedals into them.

@zurowetz Yeah, even though it's in rough shape, I think this one is still surface mount, but I'll be keeping an eye out from now on for deals (I'm trying for a full Boss compact pedal collection one day, anyway, so I'm always looking).

Hi mate, yesterday I had fun making one of these (I burned two before the good one), I add the volume pot, but I couldn't make it work, the pot doesn't work or anything. Technically it can take 12v but if it gives you more headroom I haven't experience

Can you make a video of wiring the 2 lm386 boards in parallel with a toggle switch instead of in series so that there will be an option to switch from 1 lm386 board to 2 lm386 boards for different levels of fuzziness if that makes sense? Hahaha

Well this is just one pedal and some are more difficult and also it can take a lot of time to design a pedal and make it perfect . Also there are other costs to manufacturing that you don't see when you just do diy pedals. I tried to start my own business building guitars that were hand made and luxury quality but super cheap and after going through all the extra cost I just couldn't make it for less than 3k$ hope this helps 😊

I built one of these and it worked for a day and then stopped working. Used the rest to the same result. The boards just output white noise now! I wonder if these are just bad boards or if I missed something
They are cheap parts from china so there are most likly bad boards but not in a bag of 10s its hared to say if you dig something wrong but it sounds like there is a problem with the power in

Can anyone explain to me the difference in potentiometer values? For this lm386 module, what would be the difference if i use like a 100k or maybe 250k pot instead of 1k.
One of the fun parts is trying things out and see if you switch out the 10k pot for a 1k it wouldn't be able to restraine it as much anything under 10k you already have in it so just use a multimeter to set it to one 1k and you will see 🙂👍when it comes to 100k maybe it will let more gane through or maybe it will go to 10k and then be nothing more after because it is its limite 🤷♂️ try it and see I don't know what I used in all my lm386 pedals but if you want to I can check 🙂

Depends on what you mean you can use to stereo Jacks and just use on as a mono by not conecting anything to the right side output. But you can't make it in to a stereo pedal at least not White what I'm showing you in this video

Dude I did this literally 5 times with the same boards, not mixed together like yours just the one, and did this step by step. Can't get it to work. Literally the l.e.d worked for a five second period even and quit. I can show you a picture. I'm telling you I followed this perfectly.
Now that said I've built pedals from veroboard, I made pre laid out pcb, I bought diy pedal kits, and something everyone on TH-cam is sharing doesn't work regarding pedals, so I looked up words and not video, followed multiple offboard wiring diagrams.... still no pedal I make works despite how closely I follow yours or anyone else's directions.
So what do I do? Well I go to the one person in person in a small shit town town I reside in... what does he tell me to do? Well to follow the same diagrams I already have for 2 months....offer to show him a picture oof what I'm doing tells me there is no need. Sends me the offboard wiring diagram like yours only the ground and the l.e.d spot switched which is commo and is the "easiest" offboard wiring diagram.
Literally nothing I'm doing works. I'm 600 dollars into a hobby with over 10 pedals "built" and once I introduce a l.e d light and footswitch it won't work. Even the diy pedals kits with instructions that I then looked up 3 different youtubers building step by step to like your video where I can almost recite it word for word... still nothing.
I'm not trying to come off angry at you, but there is something the youtube community is missing as far as info because I'm not a stranger to a soldering gun and electronics. I've built multiple synths, lofi mics, I can get these lm 386 boards to work when following marks video.. not yours, and no one making diy pedals on TH-cam and I literally have no one in person to help me trouble shoot. I thought this would be a fun musical hobby and I've never had anything musically related piss me off more.
I know whatever I'm doing is something small because it acts like it wants to work, and it tries, but then the led will work once and die, and I'm using a 2.2k resistor and then no sound sounds like it's coming from the input, and again I'm not a stranger to doing this kind of thing... so ... 🤷♀️
I'm about to throw all my pedal related shit in the garbage. All the electrical components and veroboard, the wire, the soldering iron... I just wasted a ton of money on a hobby I can't for the life of me figure out, and have no helpful way to trouble shoot.

hallo I'm sorry to hear you are having problems with your builds, believe me I have bin there too it can be vary frustrating but once you figure it out it will be even more rewarding for you. so please don't give up.
it sound like a power issue I'm in EU and we have standardized powers so it might be different for you? if so maybe looking in to how that works might help. do you get another respond when using a 9v battery? check the power adapter and see if the + and - are the same as on the power in. the way I do it in the video is the way it is in most cases but you might have to flip them if your power adaptor is not made for guitar pedals. check continuity with a multimeter and make sure all solder joints are clean and well connected. measure the resistor and make sure it works as it should and try the LED with a 1,3 battery to see if it burned, if it did you need a higher resistor. last thing that I can think of is see if you are making a ground loop by putting on the lid, it happens some time with DIY pedals that something is touching something and so what I do and you can see it inn other videos of mine is that I putt the PCB in a plastic bag on the inside and put tape on the lid so nothing can touch the metal. I really hope this helps and that you won't stop building pedals good luck and take care!
I'm afraid it's part of the hobby, I've been building and selling pedals mixers and drone synths for a few years and I have "The Shel of Shonk" put all of the "failed items on it, once you think you can't go any further. One day you'll learn something new, have a flash of inspiration or new vigour and return to an item with fresh eyes. You'll fix the item. It'll work properly and you'll feel like the big Kahuna solder King. It's just part of the process. Never throw anything away. Always be prepared to walk away.

The idea to make a distortion pedal out of a couple of LM386 board is interesting. However there are 4 major flaws in your pedal.
1 - If you wish to be compatible with other pedals, you will need to wired the guitar input on the left side, not the right side.
2 - I would suggest to make the wiring longer so you can make things tidy.
3 - It is extremely important to pay attention to the soldering. I noticed some cold solders. This can make your circuit intermittent or not function properly.
4 - There is a gain pot on one of the PCB. This will need to be adjusted to 1 volt on the output. If you fail to do this, you may end up burning the LM386 on the second stage (second board). The nominal output voltage must be 1 volt since this is going to your amplifier. Do not exceed 2 volts because you may blow your power amp input stage on a long run.
