  • We went to the beach and asked local riders: is winging hard or easy?
    One of our favorite answers was: it is hard until it's easy! And it's true, wing foiling is a challenging sport to learn, but it is totally achievable and worth the effort to learn!
    Riders also shared their number one tip to progress. I hope this helps and you feel inspired to get out there and learn this amazing sport!
    What do you think? Is It hard? Easy? What's your number one tip for beginners?

    I taught myself two years ago in Marathon Florida. It was brutal. I could not get my 235 pounds out of the water. Nobody else was out (now the sport is really taking off). Watched all Damo and Gwen's videos. Here is my advice if you can't get lessons: 1) Lose a little weight if you're over 220 pounds. Every pound lost helps a lot. 2) Get a big wing. If you're over 200 pounds, get a 7m wing. It will help balance you and give you the power for flight. 3) Head upwind until the gust comes. Then veer more downwind then you think you have to before trying to pump up on foil. 4) Don't give up. It's all worth it after your first flight and then especially after your first waves. Work hard enough and you'll be surfing one day soon.

      I was 226. Lost 50 lbs in the first 6 months. Took a month to get on foil learning form just Damo's videos after a lesson behind the jetski. Everything got easier the lighter I got and after getting on foil that first time. The 1st 30 days were brutal.

      @@foilfanatic I've lost 20 pounds and now I'm down to 215. If I could wing more, I would probably be lighter. It's amazing how many calories one burns while having fun!

    When I’m asked this question I say it’s like riding a bike….whilst standing on the handlebars….whilst being pulled along by a boat…..that is changing speed and direction all the time…..which you are also driving. Easy when you know how! But in truth, until it is ‘easy’ it is hard! The woman who said it is hard until it is easy is about right! 😂

    You guys find creative ways to keep the level of excitement at a high level. Keep the stoke going!

    I would love to interview a bunch of wingers at the event site at hood river, there are so many wingers there from all different ages and walks of life, different experience levels. I try to interact with as many people at the beach picking their brain about learning this new sport. Most people i have met are VERY helpful, giving tips about equipment choices and things they learned as they progressed in their winging. I think it is a good idea to encourage new people to the sport to engage with other people at the beach, you can learn so much, of course being careful not to bother somebody who is trying to rig up and get on the water. I wish i had the guts to get out a camera and i mic and record wingers on the beach like you did in this video, new people to the sport like me love to hear their “wing story”. Larry

    As an old windsurfer (63) I'd say it's not so hard. First you don't need as physical strength as in windsurfing.
    The advice of begining with some foiling behind a boat or with an efoil is really good. I have done 6 efoil session before my hollidays in 2021. After 2 wing foil session I have done some very short fly after 6 I was able to fly more than 30 seconds in regular and strong enouch wind.
    Now I am stuked on the jibe. After 40 sessions I have done 0 flying jibe. Neverthless I have great pleasure on almost all my sessions.

    Hey D - Thanks for all the great videos - You guys have been my teachers and coaches for the past year and while it's still hard, it's happening. As a suggestion for a video - I think I've outgrown my starter gear and need to move to the next level (which hopefully happens for everyone at some point) - and I need some help. I'm 6'0"/165 lbs and almost 69 years old (yup). After 20-25 sessions I'm solidly on foil starboard and port - easy onto foil in 15+ mph winds - and secure in 2ft swells. Up winding well and always make it home (sometimes on my knees!) I'm struggling with my jibe and the other folks think I'd do better with an upgrade in gear. I'm currently on a 5'10" 110L F-One rocket board, 1800 Gravity foil, 75cm mast. I'm happy with Duotone 5.5 and 4.0 sails, but want to replace the board, foil and mast. So while I'd love personal suggestions, I think there are lots of folks in my situation trying to figure out what the best path is. Also, any specific suggestions from anyone in the worldwide Damien (et.al.) community would be appreciated as well. I love the winging community!
    Thanks again for all the videos - keep it up!

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think some good upgrades could be the 1000HA from Cabrinha or the new 150HA from Liftfoils. Great wings with a lot of stability but the next level. Larger back wings will give you more control and support. smaller less drag a twitchier. wingfoilprocenter.com/collections/foil/products/lift-foils-front-wing-150-surf-v2 or wingfoilprocenter.com/collections/foil/products/h-series-front-wing Mast size I would run a 28" with lift and similar with Cabrinha. Happy you are progressing all a great thing!

    Great interviews, love your channel. Coming from a surf/kite background I think learning the basics of wing foil (going both direction on foil) is the "easy part", it just takes some time. The hard part comes when you have to master the gybe, foot switch and tack; At least by this stage you are already having a lot of fun on the foil but it takes time to master. Cheers from Chile,,🤟

    Thank you to Damo, Gwen and everyone else for your comments. Wondering if you all can answer my dilemma: I recently got done with learning to kite. I'd taken many many (don't even remember the exact count) lessons learning to kite on a Twin-Tip board. And spent a fortune on lessons and kite-learning trips, etc. I also bought all my kiting gear (multiple kites and a board). But I'm not yet very confident being completely independent kiter myself, because here in Minnesota in-land lakes, everyone does self launching and self-landing. Plus, I hate the complexity that comes when lines get tangled. This is when I got to know of this new sport of Winging. Question is: Should I ditch all the money I spent for kiting lessons, sell off all kiting gear, and learn to Wing Foil? Or get confident with Twin-Tip kiting for a few years and later on, if I have the desire, then learn to foil and consider Winging? If it was just up to me, I'd want to stick to Twin-Tip kiting because my board skills are very bad (as opposed to my kite flying skills), so starting to learn to foil now will again take me back to struggling instead of actually enjoy something I just learnt.

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That is a hard question to answer! I would look at the big picture of both sports and ask yourself what is it that really looks like fun and will make me happy. You will learn them both and be great putting the time in. I do believe winging is safer than kite but kiting is magical so hard to answer, as they are both great sports. I would not look at the time and money you put into something. That is life. I would go after whatever makes you challenged and happy!

    Hi. Great video, it was nice to see the smiling happy people on the other side of the planet. I would add - it's easier if you make sure you have the right equipment for your level - then you'll improve more quickly and be much more content. Regards.

    10 sessions in and I start to get few more seconds of flight time each session. Several bad sessions here and there but even during those sessions I've learned some (payoff might came only in later sessions). Looking back, I am even more excited to see the progress of the next 10 sessions!

    Ok so yes - it’s hard until it’s not. But I was looking for this comment - as a newbie myself: the question you ask yourself while enduring the frustration of learning is “why am I doing this?!” The answer is why it is worth the “hard” part of learning: once you experience the magic carpet ride you will be hooked. Yes there is a learning curve and yes learn as much as possible from others. But once you are up on foiling you will want to work at it until it is truly easy. But for sure - it is hard until it’s not - but it’s worth it. Now if I could only jibe…. Lol working on it!

    Man, winging is way harder than kiting. I was throwing backroll kiteloops after only a couple months while kiting. Took me as long on the wing to get the jibe down.
    1 year later and I'm just barely, baaaarely solving the upwind tack.
