  • Timber stand improvement is becoming a common practice among landowners and habitat managers. For some it can be overwhelming, but when broken down into phases it becomes much more manageable! Matt Dye of Land & Legacy is with Whitetail Properties Land Specialist Zeke Barrett on his farm in northern Arkansas revisiting a site that Zeke implemented TSI on for the first time last February. They discuss the results and what steps to take going forward to continue to improve the site for deer and other wildlife.

We need more of these land & legacy landowner interactions in front of the camera. Landowners often ask questions we all are thinking & its awesome hearing how you guys address those questions and the concerns as well. Great video!

What’s the best process if you are unable to use fire? Just open the canopy? Or would you ever do like a chemical burn off of an area?

What’s your location? Not all forests were historically burned.

      Both if possible.

@@Landandlegacytube central Missouri. I’ve done hack and squirt with hinge cutting in bedding areas. Sprayed invasives. Just wondered if you implemented anything else when fire won’t be used

@@codywright9718just saying, opening these areas up without regular fire as a follow-up is a mistake. You'll quickly end up with a low quality mess. Fire keeps it manageable and guides the forest to a quality result. Without it it's unmanageable. I wouldn't open areas to sunlight without planning to use fire.

@@Whitetail_Properties you are exactly right. that's why you should hire a professional BEFORE you go out there like a jabroni cutting down merchantable trees that you don't know much about

The leaves of wild cherry trees contain cyanide. As little as ¼ lb of those leaves can be fatal to 1000 lb horses. I know you are promoting forage for deer and not livestock but if you have cattle or other grazing livestock, you might want to eliminate cherrys completely.

Yeah, Also, seriously, Homeboy works for an agency that specializes in deer hunting properties and doesn't know what the hell he is looking at. Is this good habitat, horrible habitat? How is he assessing properties for both sellers and buyers. What a joke.
