My grandmother voted for the first tine in 1924. My great grandmother and my great aunt voted for the first time soon after the 19th amendment was ratified. My mother voted for Truman by absentee vote the day after I was born. the county clerk came to the hospital to do absentee voting with mothers of new babies. Mom had turned 21 the day before. None of them ever missed a vote. My mom once voted in Louisiana when we lived there. she had to prove she was not black by providing her birth certificate. she saw the humiliation put on black women who showed up at the polls and were turned away because they could not answer questions that were ridiculous. She lived there a short time, but understood exactly what happened to black citizens who attempted to vote. And she became angry. How dare they prevent black citizens from voting? My daughter worked to get out the vote in Southern Missouri. her life was threatened so my husband bought a gun and went down to the southern part of Missouri to accompany her. when Obama won nationally, she came home. This weekend she is busy getting out the vote in Michigan while my granddaughters were told the story of how the women in our family have voted since 1920…and no one has ever skipped a vote. I voted three days ago….a most anxious vote, but I was voting as a fourth generation in my family. My granddaughter will vote in 2032. she will be a sixth generation voter.

We didn't have early voting in CA for years. Moved to Virginia where it's been available and I do it every time now. It's a great way to avoid last minutes hitches.

Mom stay at home, with 3 kids, dad worked till 5pm., And with none of the technology that we have today, having only one car. They were able to get the voting done in a city on one day, and hold on to your whatever, get results the same night. What changed, oh wait i know, cheating and stealing elections gets so much easier with mail ins, early voting, no IDs required, electronic machines, that is why these "changes" were made.

Most state's it is actually required for employers to give time off (not the whole day but a few hours) and many states are required for it to be paid. Do a search online for your specific state's laws about it as they are all different.

I voted by mail for the first time and I’ve decided to continue to vote by mail. Super easy and I checked the status until I made sure that it was counted. I think I am going to continue to vote by mail.
In UK kids get the holiday all our schools become voting stations. So most people don’t have to go far to vote. Never stood in a line and we can only vote in person on one day. Don’t know why it’s so hard to vote in US
Great to see the enthusiasm to vote in this all-important election - but, can anyone explain to me why one of the richest and most developed countries in the world can't organise their elections so voters don't have to queue in these long lines we always seem to see? Other countries manage to provide enough polling stations so everyone has a place to vote close to their home and it's a quick in-and-out job, 5 -15 minutes at most, not a marathon. In Australia, we even get a 'democracy sausage' afterwards, from BBQs provided by volunteers. IIRC in the US, someone passed a law so people are not even allowed to hand out water, let alone food to those poor people in those long lines. I mean, it's almost as if someone didn't want to encourage some people to make their voices heard in the democratic process.
I voted early to make sure any attack on the voting system on election day does not keep my vote from being counted. I'm sure you got that answer a lot, but chose to air the watered-down "we might not get off work in time" reason. People today are scared and don't trust the government, and with good reason. We want to give them as little opportunity as possible to disenfranchise us.

Latinos are going to be the problem for Harris this election. In 2016, a Hispanic woman I work with as well as a Hispanic woman who married into my family told me separately and well ahead of the election that the men and older women in their families won't for a woman because of the Machismo attitude that is prevalent in their cultures. I didn't believe it given Trump's rhetoric at the time but the election results showed a big drop off in support for Clinton with Hispanic voters compared to normal levels of support for Democratic candidates.

Standing in line to vote is ridiculous and just a way to keep people from being able to vote. Why is voting not connected to the Social Security system, or IRS system (SSN still confirmed...), so that all votes can be accounted for, and where we as voters can ensure are votes were received and entered for those we chose. It's 2024--not 1780s. Local and State systems can still be tied to the Federal system--just like they do with IRS. This would ensure only US Citizens are voting in Federal Election and that everyone's vote counts.
Because the Dems need millions of non-citizens to vote in order to win. It's why we don't have a national voter ID card like every other developed country on the planet.

Why are the lines so long ? I’ve voted all my life in Canada and never had to wait more than a few minutes to vote, the line in front of me never more than a handful of people in front of me. The process be being ever so smooth and election officials being ever so helpful and professional. I hope that one day voting in America will be as easy as it is to vote in Canada.
Those lines are actually short compared to voting day. Also, early voting is limited to 11 locations rather than all locations that have a set number of voters who must go to their assigned polling place. Early voting you can go to any of the 11 that are Orange County (Orlando). Residents of neighboring Seminole or other counties must go to a polling place within their county. While I could go to any of the 11, I realistically had a choice of two - The Alafaya Branch in this news article, and Winter Park Library which is where I went. When I arrived 1/2 hour after open on Tues, line stopped at stairs where I was #8, and they radioed group of 5 to send up, so was second group. Those 5 waited for one of the 4 stations to check in, and the next group called up. As I left, 3 upstairs and none downstairs with a couple people inside the library and heading towards the stairs with sample ballot in hand.
I think it depends where they are & the population there, I think many places don’t have enough t voting places. My small Pennsylvania town of maybe 8,000 total residents, has 5 different voting locations. If it’s like this with early voting, can you imagine what it was like, when you could only vote on Election Day. Mail in ballots weren’t available to everyone either, I’m just glad I never had that mess to put up with. Republicans also love trying to prevent some from voting, like Blacks Latinos & Native Americans, it’s disgusting.
I've voted several elections now in America and have also never waited more than 10 minutes. The lines are long sometimes but they move very quickly because of how many people are voting at the same time.
Umm..for comparison purposes--when I lived in Northwest Phoenix, I just went to my assigned location, presented my credentials and I was directed to a room with lots of booths--in and out in about 10 minutes. Then we moved to Oregon where everything is by mail, so there are no lines anywhere. Where I live now, the whole (early voting) process took about 24 minutes, but that's mostly because the lighting in there was not spectacular and I only wear glasses to drive (so it took me a while to read some of the fine print).

@@laurabomhoff3999I've been a mail carrier for over 21 years. We don't delay or discard ballots and are never told to do so by anyone. Any carrier guilty of doing so faces severe consequences.
There was a report out of California that someone set fire to a mailbox in a Democratic leaning district & it had 8 completed ballots in it. Those people now have to apply for a replacement ballot, wait for it, and vote again (of the burnt ballots where the voters name was still intact). That's why you don't just drop your mail in ballot in a box on a street, you go in to the post office and drop it off there.
It's not always easy or possible to get out in time on one day. Having multiple days as an option to vote ensures that more people have the opportunity to vote. Also, voting early ensures you have time to remedy issues - such as having been purged from the rolls in one of the massive arbitrary roll purges...

Great to see the enthusiasm to vote in this all-important election - but, can anyone explain to me why one of the richest and most developed countries in the world can't organise their elections so voters don't have to queue in these long lines we always seem to see?
Other countries manage to provide enough polling stations so everyone has a place to vote close to their home and it's a quick in-and-out job, 5 -15 minutes at most, not a marathon. In Australia, we even get a 'democracy sausage' afterwards, from BBQs provided by volunteers. IIRC in the US, someone passed a law so people are not even allowed to hand out water, let alone food to those poor people in those long lines.
I mean, it's almost as if someone didn't want to encourage some people to make their voices heard in the democratic process.

In 2016, a Hispanic woman I work with as well as a Hispanic woman who married into my family told me separately and well ahead of the election that the men and older women in their families won't for a woman because of the Machismo attitude that is prevalent in their cultures. I didn't believe it given Trump's rhetoric at the time but the election results showed a big drop off in support for Clinton with Hispanic voters compared to normal levels of support for Democratic candidates.

Standing in line to vote is ridiculous and just a way to keep people from being able to vote. Why is voting not connected to the Social Security system, or IRS system (SSN still confirmed...), so that all votes can be accounted for, and where we as voters can ensure are votes were received and entered for those we chose. It's 2024--not 1780s. Local and State systems can still be tied to the Federal system--just like they do with IRS. This would ensure only US Citizens are voting in Federal Election and that everyone's vote counts.
Because the Dems need millions of non-citizens to vote in order to win. It's why we don't have a national voter ID card like every other developed country on the planet.

Why are the lines so long ? I’ve voted all my life in Canada and never had to wait more than a few minutes to vote, the line in front of me never more than a handful of people in front of me. The process be being ever so smooth and election officials being ever so helpful and professional. I hope that one day voting in America will be as easy as it is to vote in Canada.
We have waaay more people then Canada, my small town took like 2 mins a to get my ballot and fill out everything
Those lines are actually short compared to voting day. Also, early voting is limited to 11 locations rather than all locations that have a set number of voters who must go to their assigned polling place. Early voting you can go to any of the 11 that are Orange County (Orlando). Residents of neighboring Seminole or other counties must go to a polling place within their county. While I could go to any of the 11, I realistically had a choice of two - The Alafaya Branch in this news article, and Winter Park Library which is where I went. When I arrived 1/2 hour after open on Tues, line stopped at stairs where I was #8, and they radioed group of 5 to send up, so was second group. Those 5 waited for one of the 4 stations to check in, and the next group called up. As I left, 3 upstairs and none downstairs with a couple people inside the library and heading towards the stairs with sample ballot in hand.
I think it depends where they are & the population there, I think many places don’t have enough t voting places. My small Pennsylvania town of maybe 8,000 total residents, has 5 different voting locations. If it’s like this with early voting, can you imagine what it was like, when you could only vote on Election Day. Mail in ballots weren’t available to everyone either, I’m just glad I never had that mess to put up with. Republicans also love trying to prevent some from voting, like Blacks Latinos & Native Americans, it’s disgusting.
I've voted several elections now in America and have also never waited more than 10 minutes. The lines are long sometimes but they move very quickly because of how many people are voting at the same time.
Umm..for comparison purposes--when I lived in Northwest Phoenix, I just went to my assigned location, presented my credentials and I was directed to a room with lots of booths--in and out in about 10 minutes. Then we moved to Oregon where everything is by mail, so there are no lines anywhere. Where I live now, the whole (early voting) process took about 24 minutes, but that's mostly because the lighting in there was not spectacular and I only wear glasses to drive (so it took me a while to read some of the fine print).

There was a report out of California that someone set fire to a mailbox in a Democratic leaning district & it had 8 completed ballots in it. Those people now have to apply for a replacement ballot, wait for it, and vote again (of the burnt ballots where the voters name was still intact). That's why you don't just drop your mail in ballot in a box on a street, you go in to the post office and drop it off there.
