At around the 5:00 minute mark of this video Mayor London Breed appears happy that Macy’s is leaving because she claimed it will open opportunities. This is unbelievable! Is she that delusional ? Why is she happy and smiling about a major institution leaving this city? She should have tried to do her darndest to make Macy’s stay.
Because they waiting for the city to do something. People are not going to San Francisco. It’s not safe for tourists anymore. I lived in bay area for more than 25 years. And finally out of California it’s sad to see what is happening.

I visited this Macy’s 2 years ago and stayed nearby in Union Square. Wanted to do some shopping around 8 PM after dinner so walked to this store. Closed. All the stores were shuttered at 8 PM. That’s when the homeless came out and overtook the neighborhood. I was shocked that the city let them call the shots in what should be a robust economic center in the city…poor leadership is at fault here.

Macy's and others cheaped out and bought more offshore made goods, and in the process lost what made such department stores unique. Many shoppers realized they could get similar quality goods for much less at big box stores and discounters. In short, Macy's got greedy and over time it's caught up to them.
Consequences of government not governing for many years...this didn't happen overnight. Homelessness, drug use, crime, and safety has to be handled before anything positive can occur.
Used to like taking family here once a year. Last trip 8yrs ago, $60 for parking. Saw a naked homeless sleeping in alley. Homeless at almost every corner. Extra 6% on meal receipt for employee health insurance.
When I used to work in San Francisco during the 1980's, I used to buy Godiva candies at Macy's after shopping at the Hello Kitty store, that was in Union Square.

I’m surprised Mayor Breed is running for re-election. A lot of us left SF for Southern California/other states, and we ourselves avoided downtown. Mayor Breed killed a bunch of businesses during lockdowns, when SF Covid map was green/yellow, but other cities were open and dark red w/Covid. And don’t forget Mayor Breed told us to stay home while she got caught partying it up with the governor. Used to go there from Oakland & East Bay many Sundays as a kid in the 1960’s and 70’s with our extended family, dressed up and all. I hung out in Berkeley & SF in the 80’s, as a young adult. Now, I avoid SF at all costs. It’s filthy beyond description and unsafe everywhere at all times. I will say that the Embarcadero Hyatt where High Anxiety was filmed is still nice, although the top floor, rotating Equinox Restaurant is closed. The Fisherman’s wharf area is nice. Biking or walking across the Golden Gate. But, a nice way to get to SF is to go to the Ferry boats in Vallejo and get dropped off onto the docks, avoid SF traffic and parking. Vallejo is dangerous so be careful not to leave anything in your car- seriously. Again, I’d avoid the entire area, bcuz it’s just not worth the risks. Tens of thousands of homeless, they use sidewalks as homes, and toilet’s. Try going to Vancouver Island in Canada if you want to know what SF could look and be like… Miss the museums, diversity, energy but don’t want to get my car broken into, robbed, or see the filth. All SF mayors: Willie Brown, former Governor Jerry Brown, Gavin Nuisance, and those who destroyed SF by letting this happen.

Yep, years is common. Seen it play out many times. Often it starts with some departments being lean, then being consolidated, then areas walled off, then floors closed off, and then finally closure. What surprises me is how many employees will be in denial up to the day closure is announced.
400,000 square feet is not cheap to maintain. That's a multi level piece of property. The cost to operate increases year after year. If the income through sales can't cover the cost to operate it's a no brainer decision. The folks on the street with their mental issues are not the problem, they are not dictating the rent nor the property taxes and other taxes retailers have to pay the city. At the same time it seems SF doesn't seem too bothered for the loss of tax revenue.

Used to go there from Oakland & East Bay many Sundays as a kid in the 1960’s and 70’s with our extended family, dressed up and all. I hung out in Berkeley & SF in the 80’s, as a young adult. Now, I avoid SF at all costs. It’s filthy beyond description and unsafe everywhere at all times.
I will say that the Embarcadero Hyatt where High Anxiety was filmed is still nice, although the top floor, rotating Equinox Restaurant is closed. The Fisherman’s wharf area is nice. Biking or walking across the Golden Gate.
But, a nice way to get to SF is to go to the Ferry boats in Vallejo and get dropped off onto the docks, avoid SF traffic and parking.
Vallejo is dangerous so be careful not to leave anything in your car- seriously.
Again, I’d avoid the entire area, bcuz it’s just not worth the risks. Tens of thousands of homeless, they use sidewalks as homes, and toilet’s.
Try going to Vancouver Island in Canada if you want to know what SF could look and be like…
Miss the museums, diversity, energy but don’t want to get my car broken into, robbed, or see the filth.

Yep, years is common. Seen it play out many times. Often it starts with some departments being lean, then being consolidated, then areas walled off, then floors closed off, and then finally closure. What surprises me is how many employees will be in denial up to the day closure is announced.
400,000 square feet is not cheap to maintain. That's a multi level piece of property. The cost to operate increases year after year. If the income through sales can't cover the cost to operate it's a no brainer decision. The folks on the street with their mental issues are not the problem, they are not dictating the rent nor the property taxes and other taxes retailers have to pay the city. At the same time it seems SF doesn't seem too bothered for the loss of tax revenue.
400,000 is gigantic. Most traditional full-line department stores are 150,000-250,000. Not surprising it's closing. They hung on longer than many would have expected.
I hope they take our flag before retreating from San Francisco 🇺🇸
