One of the most amazing things I learnt from this video was that your brain resets the effort counter once you change the place you are working in.

So I will be working on my bed desk and my table desk 2-2 hours for 4 hours. This way I could do 8 hours in 2 sittings

    2 steps
1 setup up your main working environment
    Basic:
    - sitting / max 2 hours
    - standing / 5/10 min, per 30 min of sitting
    - walking
    Flow state improvements:
    stand 50% of the time
    walk 25% of the time
    Sitting 25% of the time
    2. setup three additional working environments
change environment will improve your productivity
Deep work block of multiple hours (2/3 hours)
A new event begun at every environment like a sprint
    Main office
    couch
    Coffee shop

Would add the last few sentences here to round the summary up: When you get a dip in energy/sense that work gets hard, change your position. When you feel fatigue is kicking in, change your places. Really great cues to go on day by day!

Switch environments and move while working

  • @themindnoter
    @themindnoter ปีที่แล้ว +79

    Some takeaways:
    1. Optimize your environment to sharpen stamina and dopamine
    2. Loosen your body (standing > sitting while working - also do some working every now and then)
    3. Shifting environments can help regain focus (trick your brain to think you worked less time)
    4. Standing means the work feels temporary, so you know you are focusing on something you want to finish
    5. Stand 50% of the time Walk 25% of the time and Sit for 25% of the time
    6. Motion boards help when you are stand-working
    7. Four stages of flow: struggle, release, flow, recovery
    8. Get past the struggle through environment shifts (aim for 3 places) and removing distrations

I tested this approach yesterday of standing 50%, walking 25%, and sitting 25% while switching environments when passing from one working block (~2hrs) to the other and it did wonders! I felt more productive and got things done faster.
I'll keep using it to see if it helps me on the long term

When I get complitely fatigue I have a 5 minute walk to the bathroom, which is far from my workplace😂 and I feel refreshed again. I completely agree with this guy. Keep up with this content man. I’ve created 2 work spaces in my new room. One is a floor desk for writing fantasy - sitting cross-legged on the floor to write suits me well. My other space is for music/video production. It’s decorated very wonderfully with LED lights, etc. Spicing it up really inspires and re-invigorates me and activates the flow state.

    Detailed Summary:
[00:00](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Access Flow State to increase productivity
    - Flow State is an ancient adaptation to reboot energy and productivity
    - By intentionally accessing Flow State, you can get three days of work done in one
    - Research Collective has taught thousands of professionals and organizations how to access Flow State
[02:03](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Body position affects work productivity
    - Stiff body makes work hard, loose body makes work easy
    - Body position affects brain's energy conservation mode and dopamine release
[04:26](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Changing your environment boosts productivity
    - Changing positions and places tricks the brain into feeling less exertion
    - Perceived exertion and effort are subjective and can be reset by changing surroundings
[06:49](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Standing while working improves productivity and health
    - Setting up a standing desk improves posture, reduces fatigue and stress, and increases alertness and cognitive function
    - Standing for 50% of work time and walking for 25% is recommended for optimal flow and health
[08:54](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Standing desks and motion boards improve posture and reduce exertion.
    - Motion boards provide subtle rocking to offset pressure on each leg and activate the vestibular system.
    - Standing desks can be created with a stack of books or boxes and walking meetings can increase access to Flow State.
[10:43](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Unlock flow state with exercise and multiple work environments
    - Exercise-induced transient hypo frontality (EIT) diverts brain resources from complex cognitive tasks to physical movements, leading to flow state
    - Setting up three work environments with fixed variables and introducing novelty gives a sense of autonomy and control, shortcuts the struggle phase of flow state
[12:42](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Varying work environments can increase productivity
    - Set up three consistent workspaces to reduce distractions and increase flow
    - Varying environments according to the type of work can combat fatigue and reset perceived effort
[14:31](th-cam.com/video/1ilWAMCNBW8/w-d-xo.html) Work in an event-based fashion with uninterrupted blocks of focus and flow.
    - Set up your workspace to accommodate sitting, standing, and walking.
    - Identify and rotate between three places to work every day to leverage dopamine and reduce perceived effort.

Really good video mate one suggestion I have is if you can do a video on discipline cause what I have learned through my countless failures is that when ever I fail to do something over a long period of time it’s not motivation, flow state, or rlly anything else but a lack of discipline is the root cause

    • @vedangbhatt7688
      @vedangbhatt7688 ปีที่แล้ว

True, I want that video too.

    • @pavloshevchuk2454
      @pavloshevchuk2454 ปีที่แล้ว

At the moment (I'm still trying different approaches) I don't see any problem with discipline at all. Just think about what you really like: TV shows, video games, hiking, etc. (what are you up to). I'm sure there are some things that you can do many hours in a row. You have to trick your brain into doing the hard things as if you were playing. If you are really interested in getting results in your work, you will be able to figure out how to do that. Imagine the person in your field (better if you are know them personally). What would they do? My acquaintance works on papers on the train, talking about work tasks during his lunch break (don't think it's boring, he speaks interesting and inspiring). So, I ask myself: what would he do? Of course, when you are tired, you take a break, like in this video.

Hey Rian, it's really cool what you guys are doing at FRC. Would you consider changing the title from "a small trick" to "the trick?" I believe it would add more authority to the topic and intrigue in it thus leading to a higher CTR. Regardless, great video!

Yo, what's the correlation between flow state and ADHD hyperfocus? I have ADHD symptoms but I haven't been diagnosed for it, but I just spent 6 straight hours studying without a break, because I enjoy the subject of course, but I noticed that it felt like I was absent somehow. Like I wasn't here. Like, I just stood up right now because of the need to go pee, and because I feel hungry, but It just felt like I went somewhere I just came back to reality right now. Now is that flow state, or ADHD hyperfocus?

hyperocus. it would be flow if it was just a task you didnt like

@@urbandoorstepadvertisingma1508it's not like that.flow occurs when ur skills are equal to or slightly less than your work. Also it only happens if u enjoy ur work

Great video but re: 6:20, clearing the cache on a computer doesn't usually speed things up, since then it has to load things from slower memory!

same question :( it takes me around 3-7 hours to finish one chapter in physics. it’s so hard i feel so burnt out that i don’t study anything else. and i don’t end up getting full marks in physics as well. this video is much needed.
