Speaking of faux plants. I bought my grandmother a fake succulent mixture and my aunt watered it for 2 years! I had no idea until I went to visit and saw her doing this. I told her they were fake and we laughed about it for hours
Oh a hundred percent, ahaha :D! Imagine a crimewave of balaclava-wearing interior decorators sneaking into houses at 2am just to remove the plaster sign in the bathroom that says 'Bath' or 'Relax' and then removing the 'Eat' or 'Cook' one from the kitchen wall before creeping out, like cat burglars with black burlap sacks hanging off their shoulders from early 1960's cartoons. 'Job well done', they'd all whisper when halfway down the road. What other aesthetic offenses do you think the gang ought to tackle? ;)
So right. So sick of the farmhouse signs, even ones stating "kitchen", or " eat"! Do some people have to be reminded where they are in their own home, or what to do?
I agree with most of this Alcohol is not decor mentality however I think there are exceptions. My husband and I built a winery on our property and actually produce our own wine....we have the riddling wine rack from pottery barn with our wine (all matching bottles and matching labels). So it actually does match our home aesthetic and the winery that you can see from the adjacent windows and doors. There’s a right way to do it....
Exactly as long as house is clean that is all that really matters. Don’t get me wrong I love home decor and I decorate according to my style and what I like. Some these things I agree with but hey it’s no right or wrong way for your space key word YOUR.
I have so many friends that live in boring spaces because they think they have to impress others and not themselves. Do what makes you happy in your space. You don’t have to listen to anyone ! Do your thing!
You forgot to add the “inspirational stickers” that folks attach to their walls, i.e., “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” over their master bed, or “Kiss the Cook” on the kitchen wall, etc. LOL!
I love this! I have a lot of words on the art in my home, but that's because they are antique newspaper sheets, from the 1800s, and that represents me and my interests, which I think is what she was saying is okay. I am not well traveled, but my city has some old landmarks, so I took modern photos of those places and aligned them with antique photos of those same places in my home. The only traveling I'm doing is time traveling, but it makes me feel like I have some truly original art.
@@lisettermartinez3727 there kind of is a right and wrong in interior design tho. i'm not an interior designer but there are like principles or elements of interior design, and things that don't follow them would be considered "wrong" (of course that's not the word they would use). of course there's room for personal preference that may break those "rules" but you can't act like there's no room for criticism in design, it's an art and criticism is part of it
Of course this is true. But why come to an interior design channel if you don't want a decorator's opinion? It's her job as a decorator to give advice.
All my plants are faux because Im the angel of death for houseplants. That being said I only buy realistic faux plants yes it is more expensive but so worth it
LOL Every time I receive a plant I always ask if they're mad at the plant, because it's going to die if it stays with me. Even when I'm trying they die.
I agree with you Lauren. It's a false economy to keep buying fresh flowers and real plants if you know they'll only wither and die within a few months. Expensive faux greenery is worth it and I also agree with the uploader when she said mixing real with faux is a good trick.
You shouldn't to each is own. Lifee is too short to be folliwing orher peoples rules. Who cares if someone decorates with liquor bottles. After the past year I am focusing on more important things.
My mother has over 300 Barbies in boxes and 50 more saved from thrift stores and now in gowns. Don’t tell her it looks bad, she’ll wack you with her shoe lol!
I am 49, and I love, love, love, Barbie. I still have mine from childhood, however, I played with them, a lot, they have seen better days. I loved my Barbies. I always said I would love an entire room just set up, with my dreamhouse, and everything I could collect.
The thing about the rug where it’s hard. I designed my moms kitchen and this was a HUGE point of contention with her bc I attempted a ruggable BUT considering my mom cooks almost EVERY MEAL from scratch I’m talking home made pastas, pizzas, breads, every salad freshly chopped, etc... her feet get so painful if there’s no gel/foam. I had to purchase a “house of noa” printed pattern gel mat. Yea it’s printed it and not “textured” but it is still beautiful and very comfortable, so good for her joints. I think as a designer it’s important to consider beauty but also function. If it’s not functional it’s not livable. And that depletes the purpose of good design IMO.
Yes yes yes! I have original hardwood floors throughout my 100 year old house. They were part of why I bought it. They are however not comfortable while standing for hours cooking. I have 2 squishy mats in my kitchen, one is a solid color but a diamond pattern and the other is a print whose colors compliment my floors and my decor with no cutesy quotes on it. These keep my arthritic joints from screaming at me. *also I wipe them down every night so they stay fresh looking😊
BWAH!!!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂 You’re killing me today! ART DOES NOT HAVE WORDS!!! 🤣😂🤣. My favorites are the signs that say “FAMILY” or worse, “FARMHOUSE”. What?!? In your tract house in the suburbs?!?
If you haven’t seen Dr. Rick in progressive commercials teaching us not to be our parents. He makes them throw away the “live laugh love” signage. Cracks me up
@@rainbomg Is the gather sign electronically updated in real time? If not, it's telling you to gather every minute of every day and that just can't be right. At most it's right maybe 5 times a year. The rest of the time you are gathering in error. True though about forgetting to believe.
@@clemdane if you don’t believe in what you gather I can see how you’d need both signs I guess but it feels like they’d do better where the belief and the gather actually matter, if you’re in a kitchen it’s easy to believe in gathering stuff bc you’re literally reaping 😎 the rewards. Maybe this is where the good vines only come in.
As an artist I have an ever growing number of paintings and drawings not including things I’ve acquired from other artists. I swap out what’s displayed every so often, usually on a seasonal basis. It helps everything feel new. It’s like shopping without spending money.
My collections are the reason I live in a house and not an efficiency. I am definitely not tucking them away in some other room just so I can make my house look like other people's houses. If I like to see it, it's decor.
It also tells your story. Which is one of the consistent things you carry through your life. My life isn’t like anyone else’s-why should my house look like anyone else’s.
Our dining room wall currently has beautiful travel photos hung on it- travel photos that we actually took on our various trips to enchanting cities and countries. So no surprises that the photo gallery has a photo of the Eiffel Tower that was captured by me on our trip to Paris, and that's what makes it special to us. In fact, every time we look at our 'travel gallery wall', it reminds us of numerous beautiful memories, woven across many cities and countries. So I agree, art should always be special to the family, and personally, we only display art that speaks to us.
"Give them to the sister-in-law that you don't like!" You always crack me up. Wealth of knowledge! 💯 2nd comment...the beanie babie! Have you visited Georgia? 😲 3rd comment...the placemat kitchen rug. Hate it! Rugable please.❤ 4th comment ... Hubby's bachelor pad! The folding chairs were in abundance. 5th....Art is about EXPRESSION! EXPRESS YOURSELF!👏👏👏 6th.... Succulents Rule!
I have a feature travel wall of art that I have collected its that OK, there's jist different Eiffel tower 's tower bridge's streets of London that sort, Brooklyn Bridge
In the '70's, It was Avon bottles. The caps were plastic. They were anything but 'upscale, yet everyone in the projects was convinced they'd be worth millions someday! lol. They started out ugly and just looked worse over time.
I stayed in the Netherlands for six years. And during that time, I collected a lot of delft blue, and I’m not putting that away for anyone, because I like my collection!!
As far as the plastic kitchen mats, most are filled with memory foam which is great for standing in front of a stove or sink for long periods. I bought some plain, cushiony mats from the hardware store and put them under my decorative kitchen rugs. No one is the wiser and my kitchen still looks great.
I love my faux Fiddle Fig Tree. The real ones a poisonous to cats so... I love my cats more and am doing my best. Imma try not to feel some kinda way. 😂
I agree with a lot of your points however people are individuals and should enjoy their home as they wish. It’s better than looking at all these influencers with the same one look. No individual style of their own. Some things should definitely not be out for show.
Ya got me with the faux'liage... I can not commit to keeping any more things alive, but I appreciate the splash of "life" throughout the house. I like to think the ones I've chosen are of the "look fake naturally" category
A solution for folding chairs: Costco sells wood folding chairs. We have a couple that we pull out when we expand our table during the holidays. They look a lot nicer and are a little more comfortable than their metal counterparts.
Yea! We have these in our small home, it really helps keep open space outside meal Time to walk around by having the foldable Costco ones and look like regular chairs
We are so lucky to have so many choices on decorating. Decorate your spaces in a way that makes you happy 😊 We all have our own unique tastes and can't afford to keep up with trends of the moment.
Kiva I laughed so hard throughout this video!!! I never realized people had folding chairs in their homes as decor!!! I must've been living under a rock!!! I love watching you and Arvin because yall say what I'm thinking when I walk into others space and we have similar taste in decor!!! Love watching your channel!!!!
I am crying this was hilarious because I agree . People always ask me where are the pictures of my family in my home. I don't like 50 million pictures all over the place just catching dust. I know what my family looks like. Not my thing . Take care Blessings
I'm with you. I love photos of my family in photo albums, but not on walls. People change so fast so amd unless it has a super special memory attached I'm not hanging it! 😂 The only family photos we have hanging are in the study. One at our wedding took on a disposable camera and one my sister captured of our family on Easter. I personally don't care for staged photos unless they are new born/ younger children. Just my opinion.
I do not agree with the kitchen “mat.” Bro. They’re anti-fatigue mats. They should be used in places where you stand for extended periods. This is a case where function over form counts. I’m sure there are some beautiful ones on the market. Good body mechanics and health, in my book outweighs style.
@@Cherrysmith2809 I do. Lol, I stay home with three kids and I can definitely say I'm at my sink for extended periods of time. I don't have a rug there, though, and sometimes it feels like my bones are going through my feet. I need to actually get one of those squishy, plastic mats 😅
One thing I did with the clear candy jar issue is used only one. It's on a side table and filled with small, white stones which dressed it up nicely. This way you fill it up with a solid, neutral color that gets rid of that see-through space. Plus you are bringing in some natural elements by using the stones. The other two dishes went in storage
I love videos like this. We are so susceptible to NOT see this crap from the past in our own houses because we just get used to it. Thanks for helping me see! More videos like this please!
Guys, decorate your place with anything that YOU like and however YOU like it, at the end of the day you have to live with it. Have some independent thinking and taste, dont let people tell you what you should like or have in your place. Make it unique, and if you like art with letters on it so what!
KB has an aesthetic she promotes on her channel. She gives advice on how to achieve that look. If you're offended stop viewing. And yes, everyone should be surrounded by whatever works for them. That being said, KB is giving advice about interior design, which is a very different thing.
I remember an instance when I was cleaning/redecorating with a roommate, I started throwing away a bunch of the empty alcohol bottles we had displayed upon our high shelves. My roommate made a comment about not wanting to get rid of them and I responded "We're not 21 anymore, we don't need to brag about drinking" I will say though- I do have a wine bottle that I use as decor in my kitchen. However, it's solid black and shaped like a cat so it looks more like a little statue than a wine bottle. And fits with the theme of my kitchen. So to each their own
You should NEVER THROW OTHERS STUFF OUT !! LUCKY I WAS NOT YOUR ROOMMATE. you say to each their own but you obviously are a hypocrite and don't live that way. A ROOMMATE is not a partner and you over stepped a boundary. Would you like it if she broke the head of your wine cat??
I have a black cat and a white cat wine bottles. They look like statues sitting on sconces on either side of a mirror by my front door. They are definitely not going anywhere! I love cats and my last one is 16 y/o and has cancer😢.
I’ve been slowly transitioning out my store bought/ mass produced art (I donate everything lol) and replacing them with paintings I find at thrift stores or estate sales. Love it so much better. 👍🏾
I do have a number of prints along with original art. Some O'Keeffe prints, a couple numbered original prints of paintings by a still-living artist, and more. A friend came over and chuckled at my prints, saying they "love original art" - so do I, but an original O'Keeffe? um... LOL. I love art and took several college level art history classes so... I buy what I can afford, and if they are prints, so be it. Adorning walls with art is a pastime that brings joy and beauty.
Dang that whole bit on the wine bottles, "they are all different colors and sizes and cluttered looking" literally all the reasons why I like them 😂 Lol she may have good tips for minimalists, but I love my maximalism! I dont like mess but aesthetically placed "clutter" has a charm to it
I have real plants in a few places, it's a battle ground. The spider plants are in the window now and I have prickly plants surrounding the few nice ones.
I relented and planted catmint/catnip for my cat herd. They wouldn't touch the stuff. They destroyed every other plant I had, though, including spiny cactus. Cats are weird.
Oh no! Haha :D This is how all Americans sound when they holiday abroad, it's so funny. They're by far the loudest people in any space-- aside from African tourists. They scream out all their phone conversations and always sound like they're fighting with whoever is on the other end. And on dear, I'll spare a thought for the poor Japanese will need a paracetamol and a dark room when they return to their sound-proofed hotel rooms after a day of noisy sight seeing in Europe. ;) Oh, I'm kidding...gosh I miss the colour and energy of happy people shopping and sight seeing alongside me on holiday. I can't wait for things to get back to normal so we can all go to flea markets, bookstores, antique furniture showrooms, restaurants and coffee houses etc. Have a great day, thanks for making me laugh with your comment. :)
Your ability to present truth with humor and kindness is wonderful (and inspiring). Thank you. Now if you will please excuse me, I am off to shop for a new kitchen rug.
A boyfriend wanted me to move in with him. He still had all the empty wine bottles his ex “decorated” the top of kitchen cabinets with.. AND grape stickers as backsplash. As soon as I saw it, I knew we would never work together... next! 😂
I like the tip about the avoiding of mass-produced art and displaying art that is more personal and interesting -- while editing so that it isn't clutter.
I recently started painting, it’s a form of therapy for me. Then I thought while I’m practicing and experimenting, why not create paintings for myself because my walls are bare.
I was so proud of myself for not having any of these things in my decor. Riiight up until you mentions the faux branches. Lol. I definitely have a bunch of white branches sticking out of a vase that I actually paid $249 for 😂
In a way I disagree about words ≠ art when it comes to framing music sheets , lyrics of a wedding song, framing your nana's hand written letters or something personal. I agree with what your are saying about Bed Bath & Beyond basic like "kitchen" or something. (Except Christmas. For Christmas I go all out Merry Christmas, Christmas Lyrics & traditional poetry everywhere 😂) This is the 2nd video of your's I have watched and I'm in love. I found you from a Nick Lewis video & I am so glad you were in that collaboration. So much love to you girlfriend ❤-Megan
I also disagree about the words ≠ art for the same reasons, but also because there are some really well done typography posters/prints where they incorporate a lot of color & pattern. I have prints that say "F**K SELF DOUBT" in red on light pink & orange zebra print backgrounds, & those are a lot more interesting. However, a black & white print that just says "NYC" or "But first... coffee" is basic as hell & I get Kiva's point about that. (Although I would argue that ONE of those basic prints mixed in with photos one took of something interesting related to it - like their own NYC trip photos or photos of them standing in front of a Parisian coffee shop - that would be ok.)
How cool that a TH-camr is watching and commenting on another TH-camr!!! I love your channel Megan love your style and delivery and isn’t Kiva the best!!
That’s such a fair point!!! But yes, I was mostly talking about the “kitchen” and “nyc” artwork. Also, thank you so much for your support!!!! Nick is the best 😊.
I lived in Paris for two years, so the Eiffle Tower reminds me of that time. I agree with you. In the corner of the big print, there is a picture of me in front of the tower. I love your comments! Keep the videos coming.
Omg!!! You are something else. I love your Witt and your advice/ you crack me up 🤣. The apothecary candy jars “ did you wanna fill it up, did you not want to on fill it up? What were you going for here” this was so hilarious with the hand movement
Rugs by the sink NO!NO,NO! Wash the floor and for comfort, wear slippers! Just found you’re videos and loving them. Agree with everything you are saying.
L♥️V everything about this. You have a special knack for explaining home decor like a simple math problem. When you say it, it just makes perfect sense‼️
I appreciate some of your affirmations. As a girl growing up in a greenhouse family in Kansas, I can't enjoy faux flowers with the wrong type of leaves or other "mistakes." Also, I don't need mountains or oceans in my landscapes. To me, it is the prairie that is beautiful and meaningful, but apparently not a lot of artists agree. I wind up with photos of local flowers.
Thank you and amen! I love that you said these with gentle humor! I detest signs! If you have to put up a sign that says "farmhouse" or "country kitchen" to let me know your style, then your decor is all wrong!! My other pet peeve is fake greenery and florals everywhere. Just no! I'm really enjoying your channel!
Then don't decorate YOUR home with those things, going to someone else's home judging their decor choices is petty, shallow and rude. "Pet peeve" is a nicer way of saying "I disapprove of your choices that have nothing to do with me", get over yourself.
Along with what she advised it is about what brings you comfort, is your own style, what creates it your home, and practicality.. stay true to yourself God bless you all🙏❤😊
I liked this video! Re my own home - I like to mix faux greenery with real plants, but I’m very selective when choosing a fake plant; my fake rubber plant cost a bomb but it was worth it. People are always surprised when I tell them it’s a fake. I bought it to cover up some ugly exposed pipes. I can’t put a real plant in that spot because they always die. I confess to having two pieces of word art, but they’re discreet. I have a photo with the Eiffel Tower in it. It’s a pic of my grandmother on her one and only visit to Paris, and was taken by my grandfather, who was a professional photographer. It’s a beaut!
I think this has been one of my favorite videos yet. I love how delicate you put these, but also the "K but why" look is amazing!! Thank you! Love you!
IF you already have the apothecary jars (candy jars) and you want to keep them, I have seen them used beautifully in a bathroom. Bath salts - neutral colora with a silver scoop, soaps (the little bars for a guest soaps), and bath oil beads - again in neutral colors, look nice stored in these. My mother-in-law had these in our shared family mountain house in the master bath (that we all bathed in because it sat in front a window with a gorgeous view), and we could draw and 'doctor' our baths the way we found most pleasurable. The little hand soaps...we each chose one for ourselves for the time there, and then threw away at the end of our visit. They jars were displayed in the mirrored shelving by the jacuzzi tub, and it was very pretty. Candles, towels, and washcloths were also rolled and displayed interspersed among them, so we could take a luxurious bath, and have everything we needed within arms reach. We LOVED it!
Kiva, the plastic rugs are for cushion that aides while standing a long time. They are also used in. Restaurant kitchens. I have arthritis all over and feet. The mat helps. However, I did choose a nice gray/white one that added to the decor. It’s been a win win!
I enjoyed this video. I think you offered good advice, especially for new homeowners. And you're very tactful as you express your opinions. And a sense of humor goes a long way to being confident in decorating, especially if grab bars and other adaptive devices are a necessity .
What about pampas grass? Because I am damn near obsessed with those. Also going to be a tough one for me regarding the kitchen mats because they are so comfortable on my feet.
Oh gosh. I agree with almost all of these...and I definitely agreed with the Paris prints/travel prints until you included words. That cut me deep in my soul lol. I’m a wordy nerdy girl and having words around me grounds me. I’m 100% a words of affirmation girl so encouraging words around my house are so helpful especially in times of anxiety or depression.
Words can be great decor, but not if they are stickers, wall decals or wooden signs that just say basic stuff like "Live, Laugh, Love" or "Girlboss". Mass produced decor like that comes across as very impersonal and tacky. Having words that mean a lot to you, like quotes, poems, scripture verses and positive affirmations, be it part of art or framed elevates the space more than a wooden or acrylic sign bought online.
Have them printed in black and white and frame them in black frames with white matting for a contemporary look. Also, pick moments rather than portraits. And don’t design your house with them...incorporate compositions into your house design. And, for the love of all things design, don’t use 16x20 department store portraits of your kids as art.
Black and white like the other reply suggested BUT... pick 5 to 7 photos you love (I disagree, they can be portraits mixed with events), have them enlarged 2 to 3 different sizes, and display them on a shallow shelf, (5 inches deep or so), in a hallway, stairway, someplace where they are an accent and not a focal point. Put the other photos in a photo book or if you can afford it have them made into a hard backed coffee table book for you to look at when you want to revisit memories. Not all memories need to be displayed, they can be lovingly preserved and them passed down to your children in book form.
Most the time I see these designers give you a take away of unifying the frames If the frames are all the same color or the same sort of texture it gives it more of a organized collective feel. It doesn't mean they have to all be the same sizes in fact to me it's more interesting when they're not. And just to be that renegade I'm the kind of person that absolutely loves to see family pictures in someone's home. To me it grounds the home but that's because I'm all about family. I'm in the theater and I deal with a lot of people who have that design aesthetic and they can show you ways to incorporate your actual family pictures and we see the love we see the art I think they can coexist. When people come into my mother's house it's all of us all of her girls all of the children the grandchildren it's moments. That is like the most valuable thing to us. I rebelled against the soda generic looking spaces that basically look like they could be hotels. And a hotel is great but I've done a tour and I understand that after a while a hotel is not a home. We need to have the human element. That's just my opinion I'm all for the pictures. It's just how you stage them
If you have the funds, commission a painting based on your favourite picture, Just make sure that the style the artist works in is what you're looking for and give them the freedom to change colors and details to make the painting look like an artwork and not like someone just enlarged a photo.
I agree. I watch a lot of real estate YT, and I’ve seen new, modern homes in the 10 to 20-million dollar range with a temperature-controlled, glass-encased wine “cellar” smack dab in center of the living room for everyone to see. I get that, when entertaining, wine becomes easily accessible, but a wine collection is not aesthetically pleasing. Nor are bars of any kind. I HATE bars. Nothing is tackier. One can always select bottles of wine in advance when guests are coming, and bring them out at the appropriate time, but the bulk of the collection itself should hidden away. Bar carts, however, ARE somehow both classy and decorative.
I caught myself looking sideways from the computer screen to find some of the SAME things in my home you were preaching about. I wanted to snap back, but hearing you talk about them and looking at them with new eyes, I saw that you were right! Loved the grubby hands comment, by the way. You've got a new subscriber!
Oh Good! We're doing it right - we refer to our house as a mullet! - business (nice decor) in the front (entry rooms) party (nerdy stuff, cheap stuff, plastic stuff, collections) in the back (the basement and playroom). I work on replacing the cheap stuff as we can but having the nerdier and personal art that's not traditionally stylish decor is so fun to have to enjoy in our more 'protected' spaces - and no one will ever be put off or judge us for those items because if they're even in those spaces they're already our friends, LoL!
So you decided to choose violence today?!!! 🤣🤣🤣 Next time just @ me so I can prepare for this dragging! Thanks for the loving but informative redirection as always! 🙌🏿
Love this whole video!! I’m in my mid 30s and love learning about interior design, since earlier in life I never had access to or interest in it. Thank you so much for sharing with us. Happy to be a new subscriber ❤️
Kiva, wordworks have been there for decades. There are amazing artworks of this genre, and I recommend that you check out Ed Ruscha, Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, On Kawara, and Christopher Wool. That would have been a better alternative for 'art with words'. Kindly refrain from stating that art does not have words on them. Many contemporary masterpieces from the Pop, the Conceptualist, and the Postminimilast periods contain words.
“Stop buying art that has words in it” I felt that deep in my soul! How about stop with the words on every single thing in your home…ie., “Rae Dunn” dear lord please stop with the Rae Dunn!
@@KivaBrent you’re so right ! I am watching while writing comment so I added another one, because I really love the way you explain to people why they have to do this or that !
There are many comments that essentially say "do what you like". Well of course!!! But if you are here it's possibly because you don't know what you like or you don't "like what you've done" ! (smile) Watching videos like this one helps develop an understanding of design concepts explain why you "like what you like" and why. With this understanding you can get better at designing your own space so you love it even more, save yourself some frustration (when you can't just seem to get it "right") and save money on things you thought you would like but now hate.
thank you for the video. my husband has decluttered his beer bar which looked just like your shelf of bottles. He now has created a whisky bar, hidden in his den which looks so much better, and so clearer. thank you for your helpx
I have issues with the clutter of my collections, dolls, records, Crystal's and such. Its invading my home lol! I am getting a room specifically for my collections and rotate each item out throughout the year in the main living space.
Target sells some really cute washable rugs with plenty of texture. They’re cheap also if you’re on a budget. I would suggest too shopping at antique stores if you’re on a budget. You can find some really quality pieces for a good price and intermix them with new items.
Ditto, I’ll admit often times in my head I’m just like, _go make some!_ But then I look into my studio and I’m like, maybe I should follow this advice first, eh?
Faux plants are a necessity for some people regardless of how much interior design begs for live plants! We bought my great-great-great-great aunt (bless her) a cactus for the only sunny window she had in a basement apartment! On our next visit it was slumped over deceased! It had drowned from her daily watering!
I agree the plastic kitchen rugs are not attractive - I purchased mine because of the cushioning it provides for when i'm standing in one spot for a length of time (due to back issues) - is there a more attractive option that might offer that same cushioning on the feet and hence back?
I think this is the 2nd time I’m watching this. Omg you are so good for us. For our mood. For our homes. You are so witty and talented. ❤️ you made me smile so many times watching this. Speaking of faux plants. I bought my grandmother a fake succulent mixture and my aunt watered it for 2 years! I had no idea until I went to visit and saw her doing this. I told her they were fake and we laughed about it for hours
Thats so funny! Sounds like your Aunt has a good sense of humor. :)

You forgot to add the “inspirational stickers” that folks attach to their walls, i.e., “Always Kiss Me Goodnight” over their master bed, or “Kiss the Cook” on the kitchen wall, etc. LOL!
Hahahahaha!
We cannot forget the inspirational signs! Off with their heads!
Yes to this!! I despise wall sticker quotes 😤 it’s sooo tacky and college grade or better yet high school.. 🤦🏾♀️

Omg yes!!!!!
Yaaassss!!

I love that idea!
Beauty is subjective and so is art. Do what makes you happy. Do not follow anybody else's idea of cool. Do you.
agree...
@@lisettermartinez3727 there kind of is a right and wrong in interior design tho. i'm not an interior designer but there are like principles or elements of interior design, and things that don't follow them would be considered "wrong" (of course that's not the word they would use). of course there's room for personal preference that may break those "rules" but you can't act like there's no room for criticism in design, it's an art and criticism is part of it
@@Mariah-jo1nr they click on these types of videos to look for something to be offended about
Of course this is true. But why come to an interior design channel if you don't want a decorator's opinion? It's her job as a decorator to give advice.

All my plants are faux because Im the angel of death for houseplants. That being said I only buy realistic faux plants yes it is more expensive but so worth it
Yes it’s definitely worth it!!
Im with you! No one can KILL a plant like i can :(
LOL Every time I receive a plant I always ask if they're mad at the plant, because it's going to die if it stays with me. Even when I'm trying they die.
Watered plants in my house produce mold, and I’m allergic to mold.
I agree with you Lauren. It's a false economy to keep buying fresh flowers and real plants if you know they'll only wither and die within a few months. Expensive faux greenery is worth it and I also agree with the uploader when she said mixing real with faux is a good trick.
Everyone needs to see my Barbie collection in its entirety. EVERYONE. (Kidding! But I do have a kick ass collection. They are fierce. Not ashamed. 😎)
You shouldn't to each is own. Lifee is too short to be folliwing orher peoples rules. Who cares if someone decorates with liquor bottles. After the past year I am focusing on more important things.
Do what you love and just be happy. Collections can be a great conversation starter, each piece usually has a story behind it. :)
Barbie Rules!!

"Gather" 😉
Or EAT in the kitchen... 🤦🏻♀️
I will not tolerate art that tells me what to do! If I want to live, laugh or love I will choose when and if I do so.
Hahahahaha!
But how do you know when to gather? Or If there’s other vibes allowed besides the good ones? WHAT IF YOU FORGET TO BELIEVE
@@rainbomg Maybe they could put the Gather sign next to some roses in the garden so you would know to "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may"
As an artist I have an ever growing number of paintings and drawings not including things I’ve acquired from other artists.
So right
If I wanted a boring fancy house like every other "adult" I'd hide my collections.
It also tells your story. Which is one of the consistent things you carry through your life. My life isn’t like anyone else’s-why should my house look like anyone else’s.
I think it depends on the collection. I collect 1900's jewelry boxes. They are mostly tucked in a secretary
This. If one hides all signs of who we are and what we like then we might as well be living in a hotel room with no character.
The folding chair is now a household GO-TO since Montgomery 🤣😂

Are Ruggables really good? I haven’t tried one yet. I actually do have a farm and WE GOT MUD!!
BUT THE BACK WALL IS CLUTTERED. SO WE ARE NOT PERFECTION.
In the '70's, It was Avon bottles. The caps were plastic. They were anything but 'upscale, yet everyone in the projects was convinced they'd be worth millions someday! lol. They started out ugly and just looked worse over time.
Folding chairs and tables are nice as extra pieces of furniture to pull out when needed once or twice a year when all the family comes over.
I stayed in the Netherlands for six years. And during that time, I collected a lot of delft blue, and I’m not putting that away for anyone, because I like my collection!!
Oooookay.

I have a few pieces myself. They’re beautiful 🤩
My mom recently gave me her collection. She started buying it in 1975.
Maybe in the kitchen area or dining room.
Leuk! ;)
As far as the plastic kitchen mats, most are filled with memory foam which is great for standing in front of a stove or sink for long periods. I bought some plain, cushiony mats from the hardware store and put them under my decorative kitchen rugs. No one is the wiser and my kitchen still looks great.
That is a brilliant idea!!

Also, you can twist and bend the nice faux plants so they look right!
I never knew that, thanks for the info
I agree with a lot of your points however people are individuals and should enjoy their home as they wish. It’s better than looking at all these influencers with the same one look. No individual style of their own. Some things should definitely not be out for show.
Ya got me with the faux'liage... I can not commit to keeping any more things alive, but I appreciate the splash of "life" throughout the house. I like to think the ones I've chosen are of the "look fake naturally" category
It also provides health benefits! It can trick our minds into thinking we are in nature and lower our cortisol and blood pressure.
A solution for folding chairs: Costco sells wood folding chairs. We have a couple that we pull out when we expand our table during the holidays. They look a lot nicer and are a little more comfortable than their metal counterparts.
We have chairs like that for our regular chairs, and they are comfortable. Not for four hours, but we're not sitting in them for four hours.
There are some lovely folding bamboo chairs.
Target also has some that look like dining room chairs...I'm readynto.invest in some🤗

True!! My grandma has a picture shrine of my dog 😂😂😂 it’s definitely collecting dust!

“I know what my family looks like” 😂😂
I do not agree with the kitchen “mat.” Bro. They’re anti-fatigue mats. They should be used in places where you stand for extended periods. This is a case where function over form counts. I’m sure there are some beautiful ones on the market. Good body mechanics and health, in my book outweighs style.
But who stands at their sink for extended periods?
@@Cherrysmith2809 I do. Lol, I stay home with three kids and I can definitely say I'm at my sink for extended periods of time. I don't have a rug there, though, and sometimes it feels like my bones are going through my feet. I need to actually get one of those squishy, plastic mats 😅

I am in the process of remodeling a lake cottage. This is so helpful! I want it to feel comfortable, uncluttered and inviting.
“We’re giving them to our sister in law that we don’t like” 😂😂😂 I can’t relate but I still chuckled hahah!

Guys, decorate your place with anything that YOU like and however YOU like it, at the end of the day you have to live with it. Have some independent thinking and taste, dont let people tell you what you should like or have in your place. Make it unique, and if you like art with letters on it so what!

We all know someone who uses alcohol as home decor 😂😂😂
I remember an instance when I was cleaning/redecorating with a roommate, I started throwing away a bunch of the empty alcohol bottles we had displayed upon our high shelves. My roommate made a comment about not wanting to get rid of them and I responded "We're not 21 anymore, we don't need to brag about drinking"
I will say though- I do have a wine bottle that I use as decor in my kitchen. However, it's solid black and shaped like a cat so it looks more like a little statue than a wine bottle. And fits with the theme of my kitchen. So to each their own
I had one of those black cat wine bottles. I love the matte black glass! Don't know what happened to it.

I recently started painting, it’s a form of therapy for me. Then I thought while I’m practicing and experimenting, why not create paintings for myself because my walls are bare.
I was so proud of myself for not having any of these things in my decor. Riiight up until you mentions the faux branches. Lol. I definitely have a bunch of white branches sticking out of a vase that I actually paid $249 for 😂

Oh lord.
You know there are some top designers that love putting driftwood in vases! If it looks good, hey - why not? 🙂
That’s what’s hard about decor and fashion updating - we are never getting back the full value of what we paid for a hot-ticket item.
I like mine. Keeping it 😂
In a way I disagree about words ≠ art when it comes to framing music sheets , lyrics of a wedding song, framing your nana's hand written letters or something personal. I agree with what your are saying about Bed Bath & Beyond basic like "kitchen" or something.
(Except Christmas. For Christmas I go all out Merry Christmas, Christmas Lyrics & traditional poetry everywhere 😂)
This is the 2nd video of your's I have watched and I'm in love.

L♥️V everything about this. You have a special knack for explaining home decor like a simple math problem. When you say it, it just makes perfect sense‼️
Thank you so much, Ayanna! I really appreciate this.
Yes!! Everything is in good fun around here. Totally agree! Thanks so much Lesli! 💕

Pampas grass are gorgeous!!

I love your personality and delivery ....YOU are hilarious but telling the truth at the same time!!!!!
So keep the words! That's it. Do what works for you!
I love your sense of humor. I just found you today so I’ll be binge watching all your videos this week.
Welcome!! Thank you so much :)
QUESTION: Is there a video on family photos? How do you design a house with photos that have the feel of grandmas pictures but not the overdone look?!
It's just how you stage them
(
If you have the funds, commission a painting based on your favourite picture, Just make sure that the style the artist works in is what you're looking for and give them the freedom to change colors and details to make the painting look like an artwork and not like someone just enlarged a photo.
You can also decanter the ugly alcohol bottles into very elegant glass bottles. Crate and Barrel has some gorgeous ones for an affordable price.
True! There’s nothing better than a good upcycle!
And you can thrift beautiful bar cart decanters that are unique and not mass produced
That used to be the norm.
I have the perchance for a pretty bottle.
But mine is from my reed diffusers and I keep the bottles
Just research beforehand which liquors are suitable to be decanted, and for how long xx
I love the way you don't sugar coat it. You are SO right! Keep it coming.
I caught myself looking sideways from the computer screen to find some of the SAME things in my home you were preaching about. I wanted to snap back, but hearing you talk about them and looking at them with new eyes, I saw that you were right!
Loved the grubby hands comment, by the way. You've got a new subscriber!
Welcome!! Thanks so much for watching! 😂💕
That spidery Medusa lamp jumped out of 2005 to attack me personally 😂😭
FOLDING CHAIRS they fold, so store them, till thanksgiving, when you need a kids table!🤔😄
So you decided to choose violence today?!!! 🤣🤣🤣
Next time just @ me so I can prepare for this dragging!
Thanks for the loving but informative redirection as always! 🙌🏿
Hahahaha I really did 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
This 👆
“Stop buying art that has words in it” I felt that deep in my soul! How about stop with the words on every single thing in your home…ie., “Rae Dunn” dear lord please stop with the Rae Dunn!
I do not understand the appeal of Rae Dunn! Stop with the "GULP" mugs and "SPOOKY WITCH!" plates.
I liked your squeamish look when you talked about alcohol decor 😂
I love the way you present things like the lamp monster 😂 😂 you killed me !
Because it’s not decor 😂, it’s a beverage and disinfectant.
@@KivaBrent you’re so right ! I am watching while writing comment so I added another one, because I really love the way you explain to people why they have to do this or that !
I’m not giving up my wine rack for anyone, it’s way too convenient
Great vid! I agreed with every thing on your list. I have a lot of fake greenery and honestly it just gets dusty and is impossible to clean well.
There are many comments that essentially say "do what you like". Well of course!!! But if you are here it's possibly because you don't know what you like or you don't "like what you've done" ! (smile)
Watching videos like this one helps develop an understanding of design concepts explain why you "like what you like" and why. With this understanding you can get better at designing your own space so you love it even more, save yourself some frustration (when you can't just seem to get it "right") and save money on things you thought you would like but now hate.
the alcohol is a disinfectant.. LMAO! now i have a good excuse to tell my bf why i'm having a cocktail every night, to cleanse :D
Gives new meaning to The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up 🥴
Also gives a new meaning to prevention of COVID.
You know, a disinfectant, taken internally...
Birx wouldn't balk...
Yes girl sometimes you have to disinfect your throat. I do so nightly with wine.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
thank you for the video. my husband has decluttered his beer bar which looked just like your shelf of bottles.
You can find some really quality pieces for a good price and intermix them with new items.
it always BAFFLES me when people put art on the walls that they don't feel connected to! but i'm an artist so i'm biased, lol.
Ditto, I’ll admit often times in my head I’m just like, _go make some!_ But then I look into my studio and I’m like, maybe I should follow this advice first, eh?
Their choice, it doesn't affect you.
Faux plants are a necessity for some people regardless of how much interior design begs for live plants! We bought my great-great-great-great aunt (bless her) a cactus for the only sunny window she had in a basement apartment! On our next visit it was slumped over deceased! It had drowned from her daily watering!
I love home decor. It feels good that I agree with 90% of a professional decorator. 😁
This session is GREAT! I love your, “ just get rid of it!” attitude. Now I have to check around my home ....
I have glass collections in their own spaces in the living room, bedroom, etc and love them.
That’s great! It’s good to spread collections around the home!
I agree the plastic kitchen rugs are not attractive - I purchased mine because of the cushioning it provides for when i'm standing in one spot for a length of time (due to back issues) - is there a more attractive option that might offer that same cushioning on the feet and hence back?
Completely agree with 99.9% but what about authentic vintage travel posters or vintage posters in general? They have words but look great, imho.
Totally!! There are always exceptions!!
This is the first channel I've subscribed to. Something really pure about your energy. And great tips ofc! 🌟
Girl, you are on fire!!! I won’t say I agreed to all your points, but your wit killed me 😂
I think this is the 2nd time I’m watching this. Omg you are so good for us. For our mood. For our homes. You are so witty and talented. ❤️ you made me smile so many times watching this. My daughter just told me today no more Eiffel Tower pictures mom!! But I’m like it’s pink!!! (She’s 38 and has her own place).
