      You guys who get your rocks off on these old GE's clearly never spent any time on them.....they are miserable bastards to work off-of. They are slow, lumbering, very uncomfortable units to endure. They always feel like they are about to go on the ground.

    I love these old GE's. The closest we have here is south from me, in Albany. The Albany Eastern RR had a fleet of EMD's, but they replaced most of them with old B40-8's from CSX (Downgraded to B20-8's) and I believe one C(?)40-8 from UP.They also have 2 B23-7's. Awesome video, cool shots as well. Narration is a good addition too.

    Hey Alex, a heads up. I just came across "Classic Trains" magazine summer 2019 issue. It has a 12 page feature story about a rail fan trip across the upper peninsula in 1964. Lots of good pics and explanations of the rail lines and rail car ferries in use at that time. Some of the lines you have talked about in previous videos that are now abandoned. Boy have we lost a lot of rail action since then!
    Definitely worth a look if you have not seen it already. Alco's, Baldwin's, Fairbank Morse, early EMD'S, we had a virtual cornucopia of classic loco's running around at that time. It would have been a great time to be a rail fan. Just before the 70's when railroads almost died out and we lost a lot of "color" and railroad tradition.

    Excellent summary of the operations - only one question arises: are there any defect detectors on this network? Some of the squeaky axles on these trains are haunting me still :-) \m/

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yup, in fact one of my videos released only a month ago features one of the DD readouts.
      Squeaky wheels are from brake shoes not making complete contact with the wheels, usually from worn out or mis-adjusted brake rigging.

  • @southwestvirginiarailfan729

    It appears as though some of those ore cars still have the old friction bearing trucks, but have been converted over to roller bearing ones. I think this because of the square shapes, they're just missing the cover over them.

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is exactly the case, as you described it. Converted to save maintenance and increase safety. Note how all of those cars have one of the bearing lugs painted white, so you can see if the wheel bearings are turning inside the box.

    Great video! Trying to plan a trip to there and was wondering if they run the C30's or the U30's regularly?

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Regularly but sporadically. They only run when they have too many trains and not enough AC44CWs to cover them. With 7 of the newer GEs on the roster, that means they've gotta run four trains, or have more than one AC44 down for maintenance. It happens frequently, but I have gone many, many trips without seeing them in action.

    You never see those ore jennies on railroads that haul ore but don't specialize in it, like CSX and NS south of the great lakes. Ore's always in regular coal hoppers there. In this video, your one all-rail ore train is also using regular hoppers, and I know CN has jennies. Do jennies cause problems on long hauls because of their short length?

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ore jennies are specialized equipment which were designed to fit on the ore docks - with 24' length. The other railroads don't have the dock problem, and many don't want to invest in a 40-50 year railcar if it's just a small part of the business. For the LS&I, DM&IR, etc, that's basically all their business so it is justified.

  • @CTTrains193
    @CTTrains193 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Does anyone know if the LS&I runs trains in December?

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes. Their down season is roughly Jan 15 to March 20, when the boats don't run. They still run one daily train during the shut down, however. Full steam ahead with ore jenny trains otherwise.

    Sweeeeeeet! Do you by chance recommend any good LUTS for editing in post production? I just got the Mavic Pro 2 & I'm excited to see how the video looks! I'm trying to find some great LUTS for the drone footage. 😀

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LUTS = ?

    • @tonnage4u
      @tonnage4u 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      LUTS are "Lookup Tables." They're either created or used ready-made during post-processing of the color for video. The process is called "grading" or color grading, of the video.

    How old are some of the odd jennies? And why are they all missmatched?

    • @ThornappleRiverRailSeries
      @ThornappleRiverRailSeries  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most date from 1937-1956. And they're mismatched due to several different orders for different types of cars.

      They are slow to make any power. They are slow to go into dynamic. They will make transition very slowly on hills and pull the train in two. Running these was like death by 1000 cuts. The first time you lug a 75-lb knuckle back or have to roll a drawbar out of the track and chain up and drag a car 25 miles in cold weather....the love-affair is GONE!!!!!
