    Hey all, the table wobble was simply from one of the adjustable feet that was still extended from previous owners, it was easy to adjust so it no longer wobbles... but I'm kicking myself for not noticing until after we filmed!

    So sanded my marked, worn out farm house oak table ( with two panels) and seven chairs (same as above but bigger). The sanded wood on table top came up GORGEOUS! I decided to stain top with white with VARATHANE CLASSIC - WHITE WASH (oil). It did not sink in as much as I hoped as you could still see A LOT of the pine colour below. Did a second coverage after light sanding and waiting a few hours. White still not as deeply sunken into the wood, but I decided I could live with it. it said let dry for 2-3 hour but I let it dry over night. After waiting over night I just used the WIPE-ON POLY (CLEAR SATIN). Gutted........ it seemed to dilute the white wash already on table and began to removed it. Now the table is much lighter and almost looks pine AGAIN. Instructions on White wash, did say : 'to complete wood project and for best protection finish with Varathane WATER BASED Polyurethane, in gloss, satin or matt'.
    However, as I've watched MANY videos, that suggest poly wip- on oil based will provide a lmore resilient and longer lasting finish, if the surface is actually going to be used to place warm plates or regular spills and wipe ups. One video actually said using water based polycrylic on tables can cause the white cloudy marks to appear through the varnish. We actually had white cloudy ring mark on this table before I sanded it which is why I wanted to avoid that.
    I'm guessing the problem is putting oil based vanish over oil based stain? Any suggestions?
    I'm feeling like I'm going to have to sand it back lightly and white wash it white with paint, but not I'm sure if I should use latex(water based), acrylic (chemical?) or oil, based so that the Poly wipe on will not wipe off the finish, as there is already oil based paint sunken into the wood now.
    Never Varathane wood stain white wash before on table, I wont use it anymore either as basically it DOES NOT ABSORB IN TO THE WOOD very well and leaving it longer before wiping off makes it look more like paint....... Maybe I should have used a white stain not white wash? Fire away with suggestions...... one frustrated mama!
    BTW: The table looks lovely as it is smooth and even as I just worked with the wipe-on to even out the white wash and ensure not streaks........ so it just looks mostly pine and ill have to see it EVERY DAY.....

    • @diywife
      @diywife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ugh that’s so frustrating! There are always projects that go like that (I’m working on a huge set where I’m stripping then staining a lot of it and having similar frustrations). Ok so any top coat will usually make your piece look slightly “darker” similar to if you put a little water on freshly sanded wood. If you’re wanting it even lighter here’s my idea...I just used general finishes gel stain in the white color go try and fix a similar issue to yours. It’s still oil based so it applies easier than a water based paint wash in my opinion, it’s challenging not to get a streaky look on really large surfaces with water based because it dries so fast. Anyway, the gel stain can go over existing finishes so it would work over what you’ve done so far without having to remove it all. Just give it a light scuff sand first :)

    • @Gladness2023

      DIY Wife Thank you for taking the time to reply. That sounds like a plan. Im going to try it.
      I just refinished four beat up old hollow doors on two closets in a community room, put fake panels on them, and tried to cut corner by using deck stain I already had. I planned to wipe it off, but like you said, it dried so quickly it was difficult to work with and was super dark grey. I even sanded them back, but they were still too dark. I ended painting them white again and using Varathane gel stain (oil based) in weathered gray and they came out AWESOME! I noticed then there was so much time to play with which before stain dried, and thats is why I thought the oil based white wash would be easier as it was oil. Hopefully, the Wipe On Poly will not wipe off the next finish too. Im thinking I may have to find a spray on polyurthene in oil based (if there is one) as even brushing it on may wipe the stain off. Trial and error is how we learn but the error parts are never pleasant...thank you again!

    Ok... so I am getting excited about refinishing the dressers in the basement with my youngest daughter's help. Tomorrow I am taking her driving (she just got her permit) and we are going to stop and look at paint color options. The question I have after watching this video.... Do you seal your top coat of paint? Do you use a paint that has a built-in sealer? Basically what do you use to protect the final coat? I thought I saw the green paint you used also had a urethane finish built-in, or do I have that incorrect? Ok no more rambling. Thanks in advance.

    • @diywife

    That green is a winner for sure. I have the same table in oak that's about 90 yrs old. I want to do it over in a very light stain. It has several bad water stains that I need to deal with first. Any suggestions? Oxalic acid or household bleach are the only 2 things I've heard of but never tried either.
    Loved the finish on yours!!!

    • @diywife
      @diywife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you know if the top is veneer? I'm honestly not an expert at repairing antiques, but I would google ways to deal with the water stain in case there's something I'm not thinking of. If the top is solid wood, sanding should take care of it. You just have to be careful if it's a thin veneer on top though, it's so easy to accidentally sand through it (ask me how I know!).
      I've tried bleaching wood but wasn't happy with my results, but that'll work differently with different kinds of wood. It can be tricky to get a really light finish, as most wood will look a lot darker with just a clear coat on. For me, my favorite way to achieve that look is using watered down acrylic paint. I have another example of this in our next video, I "stain" an entire piece using this to help blend the different kinds of wood I used.

    Dear Andrea, Just found you today. She was quite taken by the bases that she learned to do thanks to you.
    My question is: What kind of Paint Sprayer you use, I find that it appears much more useful than many others that I have seen on TH-cam. Even being more expensive it really could pay for itself in time if using the cheaper ones that are being used by others. Can you help me? Kate Anderson

    Can you make a video on what materials are needed to paint and flip a furniture piece? Would it be better to spray paint or paint with a brush? I want to try but don’t want to make a mess😅 I want a good solid paint job!

    May I ask what sprayer you use? Do you love it? Can you do quarts or only gallons? I currently have an aircompressor and hplv. I like it and the finish is great. Clean up fast. But I have to refill often. Thanks for your input! Love your channel!

      I used my airless for this one, but I’ve actually switched to almost only using my hvlp for furniture because I don’t need as much paint and it just seems a lot easier for smaller projects like a piece of furniture (when I’m doing one at a time). With the airless I do use a gallon, it takes an entire quart just to prime the line. For bigger projects though I love it! The exact one I have isn’t made any longer (from harbor freight) but I have a few similar options linked in some of our recent videos if that’s helpful.
