The French Broad is my home ground. Drove a taxi in Asheville to help pay college fees at Western Carolina. That fell into the mists of time because I a found a girl there. Married her and loved her for 60 years. Incredible memories. There was an old flood that actually swallowed a steam engine that has never been found.

The French Broads deepest point that I know of is the below Frank Bells a rapid just above Hot Springs and the railroad Trestle. With estimates being as deep as 80 feet. Of course this can fluctuate daily, but on average it’s very deep in this location as the river bottlenecks for the most part at this rapid and becomes steep and narrow with just a shallow shoal off to the left. There are other spots I know are atleast 20-30 feet deep. The river is mainly shallow from Asheville to Hot Springs which allows it to warm up considerably in the summer time, with temperatures reaching to almost 80 degrees.
With no large dams to control the waters flow the French Broad River is one of if not the warmest river to recreationally white water raft on in North America.
Due to ancient fault lines in this valley through Madison county it is also home to the warmest spring on the Eastern seaboard reaching temperatures as high as 108 just off its banks.
