    Hello!
    My name is Joel and I'm a railfan from Arizona. I found one of your excellent rail photos online, and have been using it (UP 2290 in Stockton, CA) as my computer's lockscreen background for a few months! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find you until now, since nobody who uploads the image to their own site has given credit to you as the original photographer. It took a lot of detective work, but I'm glad to have found out who took the picture! So, thank you so much for taking it! It brings me joy to look at!

    I tried this method and found it very effective and easy. The alcohol is already thinned down straight from the bottle and then when only a few drops are added into the water/paint mix it's not going to harm well dried acrylic paints.
    None of the ones I've done have any white hazing as a result of this method either.
    Maybe as always others should try the method before commenting negatively on it...

      The pigments in cheap acrylics paints won't allow for making good washes. Sufficient for terrain where the cost savings will add up quickly but otherwise worth investing in the better paints. A 17ml bottle of Vallejo is only a few bucks and will last forever if this is all you're using it for.

      In spite of what some people say, craft paints can be used for anything in modelling. They need to be thinned properly for washes or for airbrushing but the usual techniques work just fine. Some paint colours work better than others. A thinned white is difficult but a thin brown is fairly easy. Best part is, experimenting is cheap and easy. A buck or two to try a couple of paints and you're off. I've built entire models with craft paints and no one can tell the difference, especially in something that is heavily weathered where an imperfect finish is an advantage sometimes.

    • @rcdfo
      @rcdfo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tamiya is based on Isopropanol alcohol, the thinner from Tamiya contains a lot of Isopropanol an you can use pure Isopropanol to thin the Tamiya paint. But Vallejo is not based on Isopropanol and the paint can't thin down with alcohol. In the case of Vallejo, the Isopropanol is only applied to reduce the surface tension of the water.

      Model Air is Model Color with the adition of thinner pre mixed at the factory. Prepare your Model Color to the same consistency as Model Air using thinner of your choice then experiment with the perctanges the author has suggested. In fact, just start with the same percentages as shown in the video then double maybe tripple to whatever consistency works well for you. I always trust my eye and use these suggested percentages as a benchmark. It's easier than it seems at first. Have fun! and experiment on an old model or create a dummy model for tests.

    • @johnnypenso9574
      @johnnypenso9574 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what kind of paints you are using and whether it will reactivate the layer underneath. It's always a good idea to keep a test dummy to work on side by side with your model. It can be any flat surface but paper covered foam board is what I usually use. Cut out a piece 1'x1' and paint it and weather it in the same steps you use with your model. If you want to get fancy, glue on some bits and bobs like you would encounter on your model. Flat panels, small attachments etc. Any weathering technique you want to try on your model, try on the test dummy first. Pin washes, streaking, dirt, grime etc. Better to screw up your test dummy than your model. If you want to go all out, just assemble a mule, a cheap older kit you don't want to build, and use it to test out your techniques on.

      It thins the paint. Thinning it makes it easier to paint without losing detail, hides brush strokes, easier to apply, etc.

For Vallejo they have Thinner Medium designed for brush painting, Airbrush thinner contains IPA but it doesn’t affect previous layers with an airbrush. Green Stuff World has a thinner designed for both airbrush and brush so their paints or formulas maybe different. I use mostly Vallejo Game Color paints.

      thinning paints with just water causes the wash to have too much surface tension. The alcohol solves that here. And so does any acrylic medium. I'd try your own mix of water, alcohol and/or matte medium.
      I personally use a mix of water, Vallejo medium and Vallejo paint thinner. I don't have the exact ratios though because I mostly eyeball it (not optimal but I'm lazy). >

    • @staticklingon2182
      @staticklingon2182 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For washes, the Matt Medium will probably still make the wash too thick. I use a 1:1 Matt water mixture to thin down base coats and it's still too thick for a wash. It needs to be thin thin.

    isopropyl alcohol comes in may ratios already mixed with water (99%, 50%, 75%) it is not helpful to just say isopropyl alcohol. In fact depending on the type use you may not need to add any water at all.

    • @rcdfo
      @rcdfo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, only with acrylics. You can't use water or alcohol to dilute enamel paints. For enamel paints, you have to use white spirit.(for example)

    DO NOT USE ALCOHOL. THIS WILL DESTROY THE FINISH ON YOUR MODEL. I regret following this video.

    • @rcdfo

      I never had problems with the mix of color, water and alcohol. If you use too much alcohol, you get a white film on plastic models.

    • @Crom4President
      @Crom4President 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      One way to prevent this is clear coat your models. I use a bit of alcohol also and have never had a problem.

      I've just come back to modelling and already I've read more times that I can remember that using IPA with most acrylics is just a bad idea. I won't even risk it.

      I would take70% isopropanol and not the 80%(which is good for thermal paste removal). It´s less aggresive and helps cure and dry washes.
