    Welcome to our series on the Making of England. Previously, we focused on the Battle of Ashdown in 871, yet today we move to the more famous Battle of Edington. More videos are coming in this series, as well as other battles from history and fiction! :D

    Yeah I remember hearing that Alfred tried to buy off the Norsemen for awhile. But didn't know too many details about it. Till now. Nice video.

    Unfortunately the real-life Alfred didn't have a super-soldier like Uthred to bail him out, he had to do it himself.

      Uthred, son of Uthred?!?!? 😂

    Alfred the Great, the Boar of Wessex, is one of my favorite historical figures, the embodiment of what a leader should be.

    Thanks for this video! Did Alfred have more soldiers than Guthrum?

      It's generally thought that he did, though this is not known for certain.

    Subscribed, glad to see some competition in this history genre on TH-cam .
    Don't fall into the far left narratives like kings and generals tho

    Did Alfred fight in the front line in this battle?

    • @BertsBattles
      @BertsBattles  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, he would have been either in the first line or VERY near the action, though almost certainly surrounded by his professional household troops. He was certainly in the thick of things at the earlier battle of Ashdown in 871 AD, Asser describing as much.

    Aelswith: Your name is not mentioned there, not even once!
    Uthred: but I am there! Unwritten but I am there. The warriors of Wessex know it!
