I’ve been a groomer for over 35 years and when we give flea baths the first thing we do before getting the kitten, cat, puppy or dog wet is take a good handful of Dawn and make a thick ring of the soap around it’s neck as close to its ears as you can. Make sure it’s on it’s skin. This stops the fleas from running to a dry area (the head, eyes and ears). Then you can wet the rest of the animal and not worry about fleas on their face where you can’t put Dawn. Another favorite place to go is in their armpits. Leave the soap on for at least 5 minutes. If the face needs cleaning use a baby shampoo. Now you can rinse your kitten. If it’s greasy feeling shampoo again. Rinse well. All you have to do is remember to make that shampoo line around it’s neck. Rinse well then flea comb the animal out. And don’t forget to take any wet towels and put them outside of your home or your gonna have a flea infestation in your house. 😸 🐶

And make sure to wrap them up and dry them ASAP after the bath!! Kittens are super super touchy and sensitive to cold, a bath can really mess up a kitten if not dried properly :)

    • @ChristmasFerrets
      @ChristmasFerrets 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Jewel, when trying to open a kitten's eyes what you need to do is take a warm damp cloth and set it on the eyes and let it sit for 10 minutes and then after 10 minutes take the cloth off the eyes and check to see if there are any slits opening up in the eye, if there is take the warm cloth and gently swab their eyes. With tiny kittens like that you need to be very gentle.
Also, after you finish bathing the kittens wrap them in a warm towel, massage them gently to help pull the bath water out of their fur, then get a low setting blow dryer and blow them dry before you put them in their bed. I have done this so many times in the last 5 years it isn't funny.
If the mother is taking flea medication, you should take over the task of feeding them instead of risking them when the medication makes it way into the milk.

I've had barn kittens with their eyes crusted like that. I put warm compresses on the eyes for about 10 minutes and it draws the puss up. The next day the eyes are completely crusted over. I wipe them with a warm wet towel and use saline solution for contact lens and squirt it into their eyes to rinse the puss out. I continue this for several days and the infection is completely pulled out.

She is fostering these kittens out of the kindness of her heart, but unfortunately these kittens are not going to survive and get everything they need solely from her loving them. Taking care of animals is very expensive...Trust me, I know 💕 So if anyone has anything rude to say, just don't! It's so easy to be an ass and to judge others behind a screen. So go be a computer chair linebacker somewhere else. I will NEVER understand why some people have to be so rude. I guess they have nothing better to do, than to bother other people. Smh. Seemed like we (8 of us) were constantly washing our hair with that awful smelling lice shampoo. The lice comb was a pain to use, too. I remember one of my Jr High friends had an infestation of lice sooo bad, she asked that I shave her hair off. I did. She wore a wig to school for rest of the year.

If you put some of the Dawn dish soap around their neck before you do anything else, it'll prevent the fleas from getting on their face. The fleas climb up their body to escape the dish soap. But if you put a soap ring around their neck first, then when you wash their body they are trapped and will die. Make sure it's a thick layer of soap, and lather it up really good. Something I've used when I've been having to treat the little one's eyes like that, once you get the pustule to burst and you're flushing the eyes is use eyebright, which is a bark that you put into some water and cook it for about 20 minutes. Then strain it until it's clear of all debris and use this as a wash for their eyes. It'll help clear the eyes out and get rid of infection. I'm so sorry they had to go through this, poor loves!

My remaining cat is my oldest, he’s twenty. He has hyperthyroidism too and is withering away. He was fourteen pounds a few months ago, now he’s about five pounds.
I don’t know how you’re able to foster cats and their kittens. I could never let them be adopted because I would keep everyone of them. Then I really would be the crazy cat lady. You’re very strong to be able to adopt them out. I would be hanging on to them for dear life!! I can’t even look at the cats up for adoption at the pet store because I feel bad for them and cry like a baby. Thanks for all you do for them! I admire your strength!

I use Dawn on my dogs and cats. After you rinse the Dawn, apply a small amount of conditioner and then comb and rinse. That little tip helped me bunches, especially since one of my dogs is a Husky. Also, using a washcloth to kinda rub the soap in also helps to remove the fleas. Thanks for helping these babies, I know it is time consuming, but you are doing something awesome ❤

If you fill the sink with warm water after a good soaking with the Dawn, hold the kitten under except the head...the fleas should float off the kitten, no need to comb that much.

@Linda Nitzschke We used to have an "outdoor cat" when I was a kid because my mom hates animals, or rather, she doesn't want to live with them. However, we started spending our allowance on cat treats for an orange stray and he just adopted us! He was kept outside most of the time, until he was old, then my parents didn't kick him out if he didn't want to go out. I was away at college by then and I was very angry that my parents had to euthanize him and didn't let me come say "goodbye." Am STILL mad at them for that, but they said he was sick and weak it was pitiful to see how he wasn't eating or drinking.
We had great neighbors who loved him too and if it was a cold day in winter, he would go next door and meow to be let in. They'd let him in during those cold winter days, or we would keep him inside and he also could get inside the neighbors garage. In the summer he would sleep in the garage at night, so he wouldn't get into fights with other cats. Every fall, after the third night of frost, we would take him to the vet to be "dipped" in a flea bath before letting him in the house for the winter. We never had a flea problem, or a mice problem. If he was in the basement for the night, and someone entered the kitchen, he would sit at the basement door, pitifully crying to be let upstairs. It was hard to hear, but when the person left the kitchen he would stop.
One time he was crying strangely at the basement door and so we let him up, and he came running up the last few steps and dropped a live mouse at my mom's feet! It was hilarious! It ran under the dishwasher, but he was bringing us dinner in his eyes, so proud! Sadly, he also murdered quite a few bunnies and birds in spring, and we had to put bells on his collar to give the bunnies and birds half a chance. He also would get up on top of the garage and try to stick him paws under the overhang where we had a birdhouse. He couldn't reach them though and would sit above them for hours!

@@megamegaO I know your comment is years old but just wanted to point out that dawn soap will kill the fleas. So that's why this person said "after a good soaking with the dawn" bc the fleas will be dead and therefore cannot crawl upwards to dry skin. Most groomers recommend a thick ring of dawn around the neck to prevent the fleas from reaching the face.

That''s so cool you saved those cutie kitties. I recently saved one that was stuck in a wall for a couple days in the neighbor lady friends house. I had to crawl into the attic in the tightest little spot and heard it was down below inside the two by fours and wall with only a foot of room across. I then cut it out of the wall and i immediately was glad i used the shorter blade but faster saw of the skill saw or i'd of cut the sucker forsure. Anyways her name is now Wally girl, haha. Man she was dirty and has flees always. Sucks because i tried coconut oil and that seems to work but it's hard to maintain and keeps them kinda cold. Tried the dish soap as well as i just washed them with flee soap. They have like hundreds it's so gross. Also found another black and white one meow meowing one night in the same lady's back yard. I went over and it was stuck hiding in a chair with it's eyes completely shut . I tried for a week different things and nothing really worked well and it kept gooping back up. They said it was feline pink eye. I remember my adopted mom once telling me you can use triple antibiotic ointment on stuff like that. The dollar stores often carry them as well as dollar bell or 99 cent store. Put some of that and the next day it was way better and looked to be working. Did it for three days and it's been gone ever sense. Anyways if anyone's got a great way to kill most these damn flees i'd be grateful. I don't like those goups or pills because i heard they are poison and heard cats dying after having them and the collars sometimes though it could be wrong i guess.

A hint: try not to wet their ears or get water in their ears, either they can get an ear infection. Also, maybe using your sink as a bath may be easier and less stressfull for the kittens :) And you get wrap them in a warm towel to keep them warm, it helps too ^^ And as soon as the mom slowly blinked at you, I knew everything will be ok :) This means she trusts you

You are absolutely right about the Dawn. I had found a litter of kittens a few months back. I wanted to take care of them, but they needed bathing. So I called the local animal shelter. And the people told me Dawn was the best thing for them. May have dry skin for a few days but it was safest for the kittens. So I trusted the professionals. And the kittens were happy to be clean and inside.

Baths are very traumatic for cats..kittens especially. You should massage unrefined coconut oil all through their fur. It kills fleas in seconds, repels any that may be around, soothes their skin/flea bites, conditions their coat, isn't harmful to their eyes, isn't traumatizing, and they like the taste so they will clean themselves as they lick it. Start at the top of the head and work back towards the neck, chin...mouth...around ears then keep working your way back. Even adult cats are fairly easy to do this way. I've done it countless times.
