Another tip I recommend is, don't kill off a character the moment they become friends with another character. Give the relationship time to develop, what did they bond over, what do they do together now that they're friends, did they change each others' perspectives at all, what keep them together? Only then will the audience feel the gut punch the character feels.
yeah thats what ive been doing im making this hypothetical fangan were its a mix of new original characters(to fill up the cast) and the hypothetical children of the v3 characters if they all didnt die and i mainly kill off the characters that were the least dimensional were they are intentionally plain so i can kill them off and u i often over chapters have relationships develop ect.
This makes sense for ch. 3 and onward but since chapter 1 and 2 are so early (deaths 1-3 more specifically) that the format of having them gain friends so quickly without much development makes sense to add weight to their deaths

I want to give a shoutout to Blackened Skies on AO3. It's a written fangan where all the blackened characters from the three main games are put into another killing game. I'm not a writer myself, but It's a very good example of the first few points mentioned in the video: ideologies clashing and new reasons to care for the characters. All the participants feel so real but are different from the canon story at the same time. I highly recommend it to people who like canon fangans and like reading. (Quick note: the fangan isn't finished yet. I think they are at the ch2 deadly life rn ??)

Your videos make me go "I wanna work on my fangan again!" and then I open my planning doc and i just stare at it for an hour thinking but never writing anything.
Komaru's death would cause a reaction in Makoto similar to Taka when Mondo died, but probably even more extreme given that it's his sister who he sees basically every day as opposed to someone who, while very close, as far as they know they met recently. Makoto would go catatonic for the entire investigation period and most if not all of the trial. If you had him as a protag, this would be a very good point to do a perspective shift, personally I'd go with a character who relies heavily on Makoto in the trials, Byakuya, Hina or Hiro for THH survivors (not Toko since I imagine she'd be similarly distraught, but would probably lash out at everyone instead of shutting down), Nagito (it'd be interesting to see him react to someone he worships, the _Ultimate Hope,_ fall into despair), or Sayaka were she still alive. I think I'd go with Nagito or Sayaka, were I writing, just because they both sort of idolise Makoto in their own ways, and his breaking down would impact them greatly. I might be biased, though, because I really like Sayaka and want her to have a rivals thing with Kyoko (emotions vs facts, intuition vs evidence, etc)
Ok so this is spoilers for Penguinronpa, so don't read this if you want to watch Penguinronpa unspoiled. . Ok so this is chapter 4 spoilers. This will spoil the entire chapter, final warning to not read. . You mentioning the catatonic state as a good point for a temporary perspective shift is something done really well in chapter 4 of Penguinronpa. Throughout the game to that point, Agent had steadily been getting closer and closer to Klutzy. So when Klutzy dies, Agent goes absolutely ballistic before then going completely catatonic. And so for the trial, the focus shifts to Dot with a bit of bed-head to add a temporary ahoge. Agent was then silent the entire trial, until the moment Dot realises the truth that Klutzy was the cause of his own death - to which Agent suddenly snaps back to reality to argue against that idea because of how devastating that is to them. It's absolutely well-written, and in general all of Penguinronpa is so amazing, especially when you consider one person made it on their own. Everything except chapter 6 has been posted, and I recommend watching it! Though if you're reading this, sorry for spoiling you for the entirety of chapter 4.
Making the FTE and just chilling with the cast moments really good is the best thing you can do for making the characters better in this type of fangan
@@DetectiveNyx exactly, with the one I’m making, my support character(s) and Protag have character moments outside of FTE’s And you wouldn’t typically see these people being friends canon wise, so if I and other people making fangans execute it right it just bumps up the fangan in multiple ways.
there have to be moments of levity for the sadness to really punch your reader in the gut, I think. It's kinda like how your eyes adjust if you're in the dark for a long time
Honestly that comment about Ibuki makes me pretty sad, considering she's one of my favorite if not my favorite character from the second cast. I actually had a Fangan concept (That I'll probably never write tbh) where Ibuki survived and tried to bring the cast up in their darkest moments instead of as you put it: Snorting cocaine in the background At least, that's what I hoped to do with her
There's nothing wrong with that idea! The problem Aeris is talking about is bringing in fan favorite/ your favorite characters to just stand around in the background. This would be really easy to do with Ibuki because she's so popular off of personality/ design alone. But if you expand on her personality and actually involve her in events, she could add a lot. Even SDR2 doesn't really use her that well, since she's a victim with no real agency in her own death. Just don't make her irrelevant if you use her.
IMO, Aeris's characterization of Chihiro in the example is spot on. I don't think Chihiro has a great deal of respect for the challenges of women. Now, I think the reason for this is that Chihiro avoids befriending women out of fear they will be found out and seen as gross or pathetic. This in turn would make it harder for Chihiro to accept parts of themselves that are feminine or respect strong women like Akane. It's absolutely something worth keeping in mind if you write a fancan with Chihiro. (Like I'm doing. I'm working on a fancan with an NB Chihiro as protag and it's one of the first things that gets addressed.)

One of the most important things for writing FanCanronpa is to give yourself constant reminders of how the characters operate and interact. Watch and rewatch their FTEs and major trials. DR characters are very special to a lot of people, and if you don’t establish that you’re writing them differently in a few ways, you’re going to have people stop being interested because it doesn’t feel like the characters they know.
The tip about character roles is one I was already following for my fangan, but thinking about it more, I realized that there is an entire section of it where there was going to be no antagonistic force. Like a problem you mentioned in the video you privated, the cast at that point has no real natural clashes, and the motive does a lot of the heavy lifting. Guess I gotta rethink that section now.
Problem fixed now. Due to this reason, as well as others, I kept an antag around throughout this section. The other reason is due to my feelings about an earlier chapter, and killing this character would be doing that same thing again. Also, while my fangan does have one support as a rigid role throughout, there is a twist to it that makes this make sense. Also there are other supports throughout as well, so I think this is probably fine.
I think Sayaka and Kyoko would make very good foils (cmon: facts vs feelings, logic vs emotions, evidence vs motive, one who's cold on the outside but softer on the inside vs the one with a soft and sweet facade hiding steel), so you could have a "support" character who often disagrees with the protag but those disagreements serve to bring them both closer to the truth.
Another tip i use for fangan making in general is screen time balancing. A problem I see in most fangans that usually occur in fancans is that a good majority of the cast isn’t very fleshed our and gets pretty sidelined from the story. A tactic I use is when writing if a character hasn’t spoken in a while give them a scene or a few lines so they don’t feel left out
Also I think to take in aspect if a character is shy or more confident cause for example if we take mikan being the lead talker in the conversation it probably wouldn't make sense while someone like mahiru it whoud
Though not a canon fangan and a fangan I scrapped I remember I had the idea of instead of a standard deadly life rival I had a sortve "Angie-esque" character who wanted to stay in the kg location and was skilled at getting into people's minds in a way to opposing the idea of escaping and those who wanted to escape, including as you've guessed, the protagonist. They'd typically have the most influence in Daily Life as well as apposed to Deadly Life as I feel unlike most "rivals" they aren't very coincidentally useful at solving a murder. So essentially they'd cause folks to be mixed on characters like the protag and be prone at times to not always being on their side.
really looking forward to the vid you mentioned about archetypes. i feel like, in any kind of fanfiction, putting characters into archetypes for specific kinds of storytelling just for the sake of these archetypes is a common pitfall, but it's especially prevalent in fangan and it would be cool to see this talked about by a video essayist who's much more qualified to talk about these subjects than me, lol.
Yooo! I'm planning out the outline of an original fangan and that final tip about the rigidity of roles... that hadn't even occurred to me?? That's a really freeing thought, actually. Whilst I had a protag and mastermind, I had a couple of characters acting as support and a couple that were more antagonistic and was stuck thinking "but I don't know who my support actually *is*" This thought is a major breath of relief. A tip I'd recommend is, if you're writing a fangan using previous danganronpa characters from different games, decide whether this takes place after the other games (characters possibly being revived, a simulation, etc.), or if the other games never took place in this AU. If it took place after, carry over similar interactions, friendships, and extra information. For example, if Shuichi and Kaito were to be in the same game after the other one, they'd still be friends. You'd want to write Shuichi's reaction to seeing Kaito for this first time again, and vice versa. Hatreds like Hiyoko and Mikan would be carried over, but maybe they'd have time to develop and change their previous opinions. However, if the characters are meeting for the first time, pace everything correctly. You wouldn't want two characters taht just previously met to be best friends just because they were in the other games.
Hey there, that was an awesome video! Judging by the title I honestly thought the video was gonna be about Fanganronpas are are canon-compliant, meaning that they are supposed to take place in the same universe as the source material. Ironically enough, I actually know some ‘FanCanRonpas’ that wouldn’t classify as canon compliant as they take place in an alternate universe (ie. Danganronpa Croxx) so I kind of find that funny. (Honestly I feel it’d be cool if another video in this little series of yours tackled canon-compliant vs. alternate universe fangans if you feel that topic has a lot to cover) With that out of the way, I just wanna say that the points you made are pretty awesome and I agree with them all, especially the bit about the death reactions. I personally feel that has to do with with fact that, after plaything through 3 of these games, the law of diminishing returns arises and people feel kind of used to the concept of death (which itself can be biting commentary if it was utilized in later chapters, but it shouldn't happen for the whole thing, especially if someone sees a body for the first time) As for the trend bit, yeah make sure to spice things up. If there's one genre that shouldn't be formulaic, its the mystery genre, and this especially applies to a fanfic of a mystery game as there are already expectations given from that. For setting up twists, while unpredictability is important, foreshadowing is even more so. It's not a bad thing if your audience accurately guesses a twist (assuming it's due to clues you added rather than "they're X character so they have to do X thing because that's how it always is") because it means you're getting your audience to think, and when they get it right, they WILL feel happy and satisfied. Plus, they can go look back and see where all the clues were placed in, yknow? That said, it is a balancing act: if your twists are too predictable, there will not be any excitement and trials will feel like a waste of time as it's obvious who the culprit is. I also want to state that dialouge is a key part of characterization, so make sure to look at the FTEs, Ultimate Talent Development Plan, School/Island/Salmon mode, S, and other things like that to get a key idea on how they talk and what their personality is really like. You'd think that creating an OC would be much more difficult, but the opposite is true as you can create the rules of your OC, but for canon characters, you have to initiate another writer's style and rules which makes things tricky. To end this off, I do wanna say some other things. One is that, as someone currently reading Zero, I don't feel Ryoko is the type of person to deny the existence of luck. She's pretty emotionally driven and wears her heart on her sleeve. (Even using her love for Yasuke Matsuda to give her hope when times get tough, this isn't a spoiler btw) I feel a better rival to Celeste would would Byakuya, since he is a firm believer in logic, and gets angry when things turn out not to be logical like luck. Also, I personally do not know what you mean by "it doesn't make sense to make a fanganronpa solely for fun." Fanganrobpas are essentially advanced fanfiction, so aside from potential fame, I think you can only really make it out of fun since you can't really make financial profit out of it like you could with original works. I get that fanganronpas take an immense amount of time to create, but that doesn't mean it still couldn't be made out of fun. In fact, it should be made out of fun as I believe joy can be a massive motivator. I would like to know what you meant there if you would like to explain. That being said, I really did like this video, and I hope you make more! (Sorry that this comment was late lol)
clarifying the last point since i'm awake now; fangans are as you said, 'advanced fanfiction', and i even think without fun, there's also no point to creating a fangan. but if i'm putting that much effort into a project, i do think people should put a little more effort into making it good. if you're publishing your work to the internet, you want people to read it. i think if you're doing that, you should have it be worth people's time; give them something to think about, y'know? a question to ponder or a theme to dive into. it's fine if people don't, but i don't get it and i tend to dislike those kinds of works, since they just rely on the existence of canon characters to grab my eyes while having nothing fleshy behind it. not saying that that's wrong for people to like, it's just not what i like.

(I feel like, with fee exceptions, the writing for S is completely on par with ultimate talent development plan) Regardless, the point is that you should look at the source material to get an idea of how certain characters are characters. Though, like you said, some characterizations are different depending on what spinoff you are looking at. Honestly Nezumi VA talked about IF and how she far prefers Mukuro's characterization and relation to junko in that than in DR3, in which she was reduced to an incest joke. Flanderization is pretty common in media, so I feel it is best to look at the closest origin of the source material first and then expand
god i really enjoy these videos where you talk about and deconstruct fangans. they always give me this burst of inspiration and energy to work on the hypothetical fangan that i've tried putting together
I agree with these points since they're really important points when it comes to writing fangans, but one big point I want to mention is that when two characters start to get close and form a friendship there's really no point in cutting the screen time between those two characters by having one of them die so fast. Like, if it's important to the narrative I can get that but at the same time give the characters opportunities to grow to see if anything changes either perspective- or even personality-wise. That way, the viewers will feel the same amount of despair as the character because of the already-established chemistry they had built up
Since you mentioned more obscure characters at the end, Danganronpa Showa (which otherwise isn't a Fancan) had both Toranosuke Ishimaru and Fuhito Kirigiri, Kiyotaka and Kyoko's grandads, as characters. Most of their canon impact is on their grandkids, Kyoko especially, so I knew I couldn't rest on their names when writing DR Showa. In Fuhito's case I had it so that Hope's Peak didn't recognise him as the Ultimate Detective, but Librarian instead, partly explaining his future resentment of the school

I would honestly love to see what someone could do with Ibuki as the blackened. This pure comic relief character completely flipped on her head into a cold-blooded killer, or maybe take the comic relief and use it in the murder. Could be an accidental death caused by pyrotechnics or something and you could watch Ibuki come to terms with what she did and how recklessly she acted. You know, see a side of the character that we didn't see in the canon? And her execution! Imagine what Monokuma could do in a concert setting, especially a heavy metal one. Most characters in the series have enough there to use as a springboard into new territory, with very few exceptions. *Slyly eyes Kokichi's non-existent backstory* But no, people just copy paste her character from 2, like why even bother? If I want to see Ibuki in Goodbye Despair, she's an extremely quick Steam download away. I don't need to peruse fan games to find her, even in a new setting. V3 has the Talent Development mode and like every other character she has unique interactions with other characters in that mode as her loud, overexcited self. And this goes for every character, not just Ibuki. I didn't go searching for new content to find the same old Nagito, Kirumi, Kaito, Hajime, Junko, you get the point. Even Kokichi has potential since he has no backstory, that's an entire backstory you can write, you can fix Kokichi if you do it right.
i like when people use the canon that's already there as a springboard for new and interesting ideas the canon couldn't explore due to having a story it needed to tell, but ibuki tragically is a character almost always copied 1-1 from SDR2, with the only difference being (well, for one, her personality gets toned down a ton, and then for the main one,) she survives. and her survival is always uninteresting to me. ibuki gets no arc whatsoever because ibuki getting an arc would ruin what makes ibuki a fangan marketabl- sorry, an interesting character to the fandom majority. she never gets the opportunity to have any sort of interesting interaction with the setting or characters - you might as well toss her a microphone, give her a little booth slightly to the left of the killing game, and let her make running commentary. she could do that, and the story would not change.
Not making a fanCan but currently brainstorming two Fangans (two because they will be attached to eachother as separate but related stories) but I really like hearing you talk about stuff like this it’s fun.
I actually have seen one starting out that has twogami. Other than that..YES. Personally I get more critical at times when I see Ryoma in these fangans or in v3 rewrites. Ryoma is a character that I value highly and if he attempts murder or kills someone in the context of the killing game I get curious why he would do that and hide it. If he just got a will to live why risk wasting it? If he doesnt have a will to live why isnt he telling us he did it? Ryoma being a murderer and attempting murder in the killing game context are two very different things and often Ryoma will not be characterized well enough to where it would make sense for him to do so. I'm not gonna be sad if Ryoma dies because he's Ryoma if the twist makes no sense in that regard. (I could even argue sometimes him being a victim could easily be executed poorly but that's another thing.) A complete side occurrence that bothers me is also when the survivors have either no conflict or no relationship with each other whatsoever. In my opinion Himiko seemed out of place out of Maki and Shuichi because I didnt think they developed a good relationship or conflict between Himiko and the other two survivors.
I think the Himiko thing could have been rectified fairly easily by having her join in the training sessions. it'd match how Shuichi joined and the two would be able to comfort each other over losing the people they were closest to in the game, and I can see Kaito reminding her of Tenko too. With Maki, someone with a childish belief in magic being forced to accept that things aren't so simple is almost the inverse of Maki, an assassin who had her childhood stolen from her learning how to be a teenager and a bit childish.
I'm currently planning a 'season return' fanfiction with ocs (who were all in their *own* seasons), but I'm also tempted to throw in a few canon characters to give them a chance to be somewhat different from their canon depictions (actually using their talent properly, giving them more backstory/fleshing them out a bit more) but not too different. However, I'm debating if it is a good idea to mix both canon with ocs. Your video has given me some tips for if I do go the mixed route or if I toss the idea and just do canon characters lmao, so thanks for that!
I’m currently writing the Sleepyville Series, aka my Wattpad fangans which take place in different universes. Could anyone give me some tips based on my short description of it? •The protagonist is a girl named Mirai Hikitsuri. •Mirai hasn’t met or heard of any of the participants prior to the killing game, aside from Sayaka (Mirai being part of Sayaka’s pop group), Leon (she and her older brother were hardcore fans) and Mondo (Mirai’s older brother Daiki happens to be part of Mondo’s biker gang). •It takes place in some sort of unreal, almost fictitious purgatory. It feels like a fever dream to Mirai. •Most of Mirai’s connections to the cast were caused by her older brother (not included in the kg). She fears that without her brother, Sayaka would be her only friend. But even Sayaka wouldn’t be her friend if her brother hadn’t been rejected and decided to introduce Mirai to Sayaka. •This is like Redemptionronpa and Dangan Defiance, but with Yuta and Mirai. This takes place after the Tragedy. •A considerable amount of dead people are here. •Mondo, Taka, Chihiro and Sayaka are supposed to be Mirai’s friends in this. •Despite the lack of an antagonist, I wanted the cast to have a sense of unity and mutual trust. •Most of the people Mirai meets in the beach-like setting of the killing game (Sleepyville Beach) are people that have been described by living humans that Mirai has met prior to the killing game. •The only relevant thing she’s supposed to remember is that she passed out after seeing flashing lights. •Mirai’s only goal in this is to make it out safely with whoever seems the most important. •Having met Aoi, Mirai wants to bring Yuta back to life. However, realizing that most everyone here deserves to live, and that she’s encountered Sakura and Taka, greatly missed people in the world of the living, Mirai decides that she absolutely has to find a way to revive everyone. •I intend on keeping a few key characters alive, mainly Mondo, Sayaka and Yuta. Hoping someone can give me tips!

I made my own characters and a few characters' relatives. I'm still very busy and writing most of Chapter 0 and 1. Even though I have it fully planned out, I've been writing it for about 6 months, and I still can't write the best case but Im making progress. I'm actually taking it more seriously now and I've made most of the cast's story. I still can't wrap my head around how the hell Ch.5 and 4's murder would occur, confusion is truly a disaster
I had an interesting idea for a Fancan. It mixes Danganronpa 2 and V3 to where the killing games were EXAGGERATED but not entirely FICTIONAL. I won't go entirely into the plot in case I do EVER end up making it, but it features 14 of the Danganronpa 2 cast with Peko as the protagonist and Hajime as the antagonist. Nagito died of an illness (a hint of the exaggerations in the killing games)
About the last tip what I do is make the "support" and "antagonist" have the same amount of good and bad traits have them do an equal amount of stuff in the class trials and let the audience pick who they think the support and antagonist are
eh, to me they're completely non-important distinctions that largely exist so people can simplify the story, and that doesn't sit right - someone put all this effort into making complex characters, and simplifying their roles in the story just ruins that. if you want a more simple narrative, i'd just seek one out rather than dumb down a complex one.
I know what fangan you're talking about for tip 2 and while I agree that Makoto's reaction, or the lack there of, brought me out of the story as well, I still kept reading it and really like pretty much everything after that, with the fourth case being probably the best one yet..
i didn't like what was present before that (REALLY didn't like it, as in, 'ranted to friends on discord about how stupid it all was' didn't like it), so without the 'best one yet' having a severe jump in quality, i still probably won't read it on my own time.
@@waterfallWieske with that character's death, it frustrated me because the setup was clearly pointing to something else; it would've been somewhat predictable, but satisfying. the protagonist yelled at a character for trying to mix cleaning products because they would've created toxic gas; i thought that the character would do it on purpose in the victim's room to kill the victim, but nope, natural causes in a 17-19y/o who didn't have a single health issue beforehand.

tbh if they're acting out of character and you notice it so blatantly, they not only are out of character but haven't shown a progression as to how they got to that point. lazy writing. (and why am i not surprised that the colourism shown in the first couple of chapters continued throughout the fangan)
@@waterfallWieske Actually, hey, I...kinda have a counter argument. More so, I think a death by natural causes can work well, and a natural causes death like that could also work. But it more so someone's gonna suggest natural causes and Monokuma adds natural causes to the voting selection and goes aww man that's unfortunate and then when the trial is over everyone's questioning this, but Monokuma threatens them one way or another to not question it. Or just a mystery where in the end, it's natural causes, or maybe supernatural causes that wasn't caused by Monokuma or the participants. More so on the natural causes, maybe the argument armament is with a friend of the victim not thinking that they'd die in such a "stupid" way, "dying to natural causes in a killing game?! Are you kidding me, that's absurd!". Or with supernatural causes where supernatural shit is confirmed to be a thing, maybe you're in an argument armament facing against someone who believes in mostly natural logic, "Supernatural? *scoff* you must be joking". But then again, I...do feel like it was anti climatic and absurd. However, in my opinion, it didn't bring me out of the story because it was *so fucking funny* that it was natural causes. I don't know I just find humor in this murder mystery where everyone is trying to figure it out, especially someone who is apparently THE MASTERMIND, and it turns out natural causes did it. The fact that such a person can set up the entire game outright fucking die to something completely natural is just kinda funny.

I feel like there should be three categories of fangans 1.basic fangan(with fanmade characters made from the imagination or if you're lazy like me generators) 2.canon fangan(with canon characters from any mainline danganronpa or spin off) 3.cartoon fangan(with cartoon characters from any show)

I'm surprised I haven't seen Peko much at all in these types of fangans especially with folks saying she's nobody without Fuyuhiko. While I disagree that she doesn't have anything I'd argue that just gives her much more potential for you to make her something especially if you leave Fuyuhiko out of the cast.
peko is such an underrated character tbh - not in the sense nobody talks about her but in the sense any discussion of her inevitably leads back to him when she's a rich character in her own right

This isn't a blackened fangan like Blackened Skies(which unfortunately seems to have been canceled or put on hiatus since it's been a couple years)where she's kindve had to be included . They didn't have to put Peko in, especially alone. This is a fangan where they decided any character from the three games can be a candidate. They looked at Peko alone and knew there was stuff that could be done with her without needing Fuyuhiko being around to be glued to her side.
i do like what v4 had done with peko (though i don't really think that how they got to that point was very good - potential spoilers until the next line break but the implication was something needed to physically separate peko from fuyuhiko for her to receive the development and that it couldn't happen while the two were able to interact) but since this video came out a few more grievances have come out which spoiled my opinion on it - particularly the author deciding to harass me across multiple platforms. i wish them no ill will nor do i want them harassed for it, but i won't be keeping up with it in the future, which is a bummer. because as you said, blackened skies is really the only other one that explores her in any meaningful way. though me and a friend were also planning on maybe putting together something? though that's more just an idea we've tossed around a bit

(which could work if he was killed while they were together, or if she simply broke things off and they continued existing together - with both it implies "you have reached the end of your free trial of character development, you must lose your childhood friend to unlock the full product")
I don't exactly like chihiros reasoning for not liking akane. Gender is a big part of chihiros story. I feel like they wouldn't go by gender biases. Chihiro lied to have a reason for how they act but that doesn't mean they specifically thought they were too girly to be a boy. I hope this doesn't sound Transfobic. I don't think chihiro is non binary or Trans but still I don't want be transfobic
gender is a big part of chihiro's story, but their storyline is absolutely based in a gender bias. they present femininely because they associated womanhood with weakness, and that they believed it was more 'appropriate' for them to be weak if they were perceived as female. they also canonically turn down training with sakura, confirmedly the strongest of the entire THH cast, because they wanted a male trainer. none of that really has anything to do with transphobia, though.
I think it's a matter of opinion (and headcanon) if Chihiro is Trans or Non-binary. I don't personally think he's either, and I don't think it's transphobic that you don't think that way either. But for disliking Akane, I think it's justified. Chihiro has a bias towards getting stronger with males (he probably feels more comfortable around a male than a female). I think it would be more justified if Akane had asked Chihiro if he wanted to train with her

I've seen other people try to make their own Monomascots, but not having the OG makes some Fangans feel like something is missing. Interesting, I'm gonna be real I kinda wanna comment to ask a couple of questions, I think others had said enough so I don't feel like my input is needed. Does a FanCanRonpa (that's a tongue twister) if it's like a crossover/OC but with like 1 or 2 or 3 characters from Danganronpa? Stupid question, but eh, wanted to ask it. Also a video suggestion you can safely say "no" to and ignore, but a crossover version of this would be nice. I mean the ones like Danganronpa 69, or the Mass Crossover Multiplayer (TvTropes) type of killing game, where instead of one particular Fangan, it's 6 or 7 or 8 or *20 like my ambitious self* fandoms merged into one. The only fancan I've ever seen is Redemptionronpa / Danganronpa: Redemption. It's on TH-cam and chapter 2 is really sad especially the trial, you'll see what I mean if you watch it
This Might be me as a someone that followed along with V4: defiance but I dont think the Hiyoko example is a good one. If I remember right Everyone still had the memories of the past and so Nagito's deception to her doesn't add up to me. If I am misinformed then I will take back what I said.
I agree to an extent. The characters definitely have their memories of each of their first games, so Hiyoko would remember Nagito’s involvement with the first trial and probably not trust him. The reaction to the betrayal was incredibly written assuming the trust had been established, but aside from some snickering and sharing evidence during the investigation, they didn’t provide much reason why Hiyoko would trust Nagito in the first place. Still, it’s one of the only nitpicks I have with Defiance so far, and set up for some amazing material, so I’m willing to let it slide.

@@DetectiveNyx I’m very late but I’d add that Leon, Chihiro, and Mondo all might’ve had genuine reactions to seeing Mukuro’s body (I can’t remember if they actually had lines or not, though I’m pretty sure Chihiro did). Also Mondo’s reaction to Chihiro’s body was somewhat genuine since he certainly didn’t expect to see the shit that Byakuya pulled. Similarly, Teruteru’s surprise was also somewhat genuine as he didn’t expect to see Twogami dead. I think it’s important to differentiate the shock between seeing a dead body, seeing a specific person dead, and seeing a dead body in a particularly gruesome state. This isn’t intended to be hate or even criticism by the way, I’m just thinking, sorry if it came off as harsh!
Hey as someone who wants to write and is writing a fanganronpa I have a question that’s only really specific to me/my game 😅. My game takes place in the same timeline/world as the actual game series, meaning that it is a new cast, but things/people like junko may be referenced in it (She’s not the mastermind I promise) so what I’m asking is how should I go about that world building? Would it also be ok to use something like monokuma as my mascot, or is that copyrighted?
To be fair, all of danganronpa is copywritten, so you really shouldn't care about that if you are not making a profit out of this project. Honestly, asumming you already created the lore of how this connects with the canon games, I feel its best to impliment bits of the lore little by little in items found when investigating a new floor/island or something.

May I take this opportunity to promote Danganronpa 52: Despair from the Heart? It's written as a prequel to V3, and if you told me that this could be the actual 52nd Killing Game in canon, I would buy it. I just want it to be less underappreciated, go to AO3 and read it.
Might use this when i do what ifs on A03 did one when Sayaka kills leon and i jump too the trial might redo it later with the investigation. If interested try finding Thefallenone1986 on A03, i do dislike Sayaka but now 3 months after playing the game i understand her motives, but still feel bad for Makoto.
Another tip I recommend is, don't kill off a character the moment they become friends with another character. Give the relationship time to develop, what did they bond over, what do they do together now that they're friends, did they change each others' perspectives at all, what keep them together? Only then will the audience feel the gut punch the character feels.

yeah thats what ive been doing im making this hypothetical fangan were its a mix of new original characters(to fill up the cast) and the hypothetical children of the v3 characters if they all didnt die and i mainly kill off the characters that were the least dimensional were they are intentionally plain so i can kill them off and u i often over chapters have relationships develop ect.
This makes sense for ch. 3 and onward but since chapter 1 and 2 are so early (deaths 1-3 more specifically) that the format of having them gain friends so quickly without much development makes sense to add weight to their deaths

I want to give a shoutout to Blackened Skies on AO3. It's a written fangan where all the blackened characters from the three main games are put into another killing game. I'm not a writer myself, but It's a very good example of the first few points mentioned in the video: ideologies clashing and new reasons to care for the characters. All the participants feel so real but are different from the canon story at the same time. I highly recommend it to people who like canon fangans and like reading. (Quick note: the fangan isn't finished yet. I think they are at the ch2 deadly life rn ??)

Komaru's death would cause a reaction in Makoto similar to Taka when Mondo died, but probably even more extreme given that it's his sister who he sees basically every day as opposed to someone who, while very close, as far as they know they met recently.
Makoto would go catatonic for the entire investigation period and most if not all of the trial. If you had him as a protag, this would be a very good point to do a perspective shift, personally I'd go with a character who relies heavily on Makoto in the trials, Byakuya, Hina or Hiro for THH survivors (not Toko since I imagine she'd be similarly distraught, but would probably lash out at everyone instead of shutting down), Nagito (it'd be interesting to see him react to someone he worships, the _Ultimate Hope,_ fall into despair), or Sayaka were she still alive.
I think I'd go with Nagito or Sayaka, were I writing, just because they both sort of idolise Makoto in their own ways, and his breaking down would impact them greatly. I might be biased, though, because I really like Sayaka and want her to have a rivals thing with Kyoko (emotions vs facts, intuition vs evidence, etc)

Ok so this is chapter 4 spoilers. This will spoil the entire chapter, final warning to not read.

You mentioning the catatonic state as a good point for a temporary perspective shift is something done really well in chapter 4 of Penguinronpa. Throughout the game to that point, Agent had steadily been getting closer and closer to Klutzy. So when Klutzy dies, Agent goes absolutely ballistic before then going completely catatonic. And so for the trial, the focus shifts to Dot with a bit of bed-head to add a temporary ahoge. Agent was then silent the entire trial, until the moment Dot realises the truth that Klutzy was the cause of his own death - to which Agent suddenly snaps back to reality to argue against that idea because of how devastating that is to them. It's absolutely well-written, and in general all of Penguinronpa is so amazing, especially when you consider one person made it on their own. Everything except chapter 6 has been posted, and I recommend watching it! Though if you're reading this, sorry for spoiling you for the entirety of chapter 4.
Making the FTE and just chilling with the cast moments really good is the best thing you can do for making the characters better in this type of fangan
it doesn't have to just be FTEs, think about the non-FTE events that added to characterisation too :)

I actually had a Fangan concept (That I'll probably never write tbh) where Ibuki survived and tried to bring the cast up in their darkest moments instead of as you put it: Snorting cocaine in the background

There's nothing wrong with that idea! The problem Aeris is talking about is bringing in fan favorite/ your favorite characters to just stand around in the background. This would be really easy to do with Ibuki because she's so popular off of personality/ design alone. But if you expand on her personality and actually involve her in events, she could add a lot. Even SDR2 doesn't really use her that well, since she's a victim with no real agency in her own death. Just don't make her irrelevant if you use her.

IMO, Aeris's characterization of Chihiro in the example is spot on. I don't think Chihiro has a great deal of respect for the challenges of women. Now, I think the reason for this is that Chihiro avoids befriending women out of fear they will be found out and seen as gross or pathetic. This in turn would make it harder for Chihiro to accept parts of themselves that are feminine or respect strong women like Akane. It's absolutely something worth keeping in mind if you write a fancan with Chihiro.

@@susanbumpers Honestly, Chihiro could stand to have so much character development beyond exercising and "coming out," but I don't think the devs are ever going to give them that.
One of the most important things for writing FanCanronpa is to give yourself constant reminders of how the characters operate and interact. Watch and rewatch their FTEs and major trials. DR characters are very special to a lot of people, and if you don’t establish that you’re writing them differently in a few ways, you’re going to have people stop being interested because it doesn’t feel like the characters they know.
The tip about character roles is one I was already following for my fangan, but thinking about it more, I realized that there is an entire section of it where there was going to be no antagonistic force. Like a problem you mentioned in the video you privated, the cast at that point has no real natural clashes, and the motive does a lot of the heavy lifting. Guess I gotta rethink that section now.
Problem fixed now. Due to this reason, as well as others, I kept an antag around throughout this section. The other reason is due to my feelings about an earlier chapter, and killing this character would be doing that same thing again.
Also, while my fangan does have one support as a rigid role throughout, there is a twist to it that makes this make sense. Also there are other supports throughout as well, so I think this is probably fine.
This helped a lot as I’ve been struggling to write a fangan with Sayaka as the protag!

I think Sayaka and Kyoko would make very good foils (cmon: facts vs feelings, logic vs emotions, evidence vs motive, one who's cold on the outside but softer on the inside vs the one with a soft and sweet facade hiding steel), so you could have a "support" character who often disagrees with the protag but those disagreements serve to bring them both closer to the truth.
Another tip i use for fangan making in general is screen time balancing. A problem I see in most fangans that usually occur in fancans is that a good majority of the cast isn’t very fleshed our and gets pretty sidelined from the story. A tactic I use is when writing if a character hasn’t spoken in a while give them a scene or a few lines so they don’t feel left out
Also I think to take in aspect if a character is shy or more confident cause for example if we take mikan being the lead talker in the conversation it probably wouldn't make sense while someone like mahiru it whoud
Though not a canon fangan and a fangan I scrapped I remember I had the idea of instead of a standard deadly life rival I had a sortve "Angie-esque" character who wanted to stay in the kg location and was skilled at getting into people's minds in a way to opposing the idea of escaping and those who wanted to escape, including as you've guessed, the protagonist. They'd typically have the most influence in Daily Life as well as apposed to Deadly Life as I feel unlike most "rivals" they aren't very coincidentally useful at solving a murder. So essentially they'd cause folks to be mixed on characters like the protag and be prone at times to not always being on their side.
really looking forward to the vid you mentioned about archetypes. i feel like, in any kind of fanfiction, putting characters into archetypes for specific kinds of storytelling just for the sake of these archetypes is a common pitfall, but it's especially prevalent in fangan and it would be cool to see this talked about by a video essayist who's much more qualified to talk about these subjects than me, lol.
Yooo! I'm planning out the outline of an original fangan and that final tip about the rigidity of roles... that hadn't even occurred to me?? That's a really freeing thought, actually. Whilst I had a protag and mastermind, I had a couple of characters acting as support and a couple that were more antagonistic and was stuck thinking "but I don't know who my support actually *is*"

A tip I'd recommend is, if you're writing a fangan using previous danganronpa characters from different games, decide whether this takes place after the other games (characters possibly being revived, a simulation, etc.), or if the other games never took place in this AU. If it took place after, carry over similar interactions, friendships, and extra information. For example, if Shuichi and Kaito were to be in the same game after the other one, they'd still be friends. You'd want to write Shuichi's reaction to seeing Kaito for this first time again, and vice versa. Hatreds like Hiyoko and Mikan would be carried over, but maybe they'd have time to develop and change their previous opinions. However, if the characters are meeting for the first time, pace everything correctly. You wouldn't want two characters taht just previously met to be best friends just because they were in the other games.
if shuichi is seeing kaito for the first time again there's going to be some terror involved because kaito died right in front of him
Hey there, that was an awesome video! Judging by the title I honestly thought the video was gonna be about Fanganronpas are are canon-compliant, meaning that they are supposed to take place in the same universe as the source material. Ironically enough, I actually know some ‘FanCanRonpas’ that wouldn’t classify as canon compliant as they take place in an alternate universe (ie. Danganronpa Croxx) so I kind of find that funny. (Honestly I feel it’d be cool if another video in this little series of yours tackled canon-compliant vs. alternate universe fangans if you feel that topic has a lot to cover)
With that out of the way, I just wanna say that the points you made are pretty awesome and I agree with them all, especially the bit about the death reactions. I personally feel that has to do with with fact that, after plaything through 3 of these games, the law of diminishing returns arises and people feel kind of used to the concept of death (which itself can be biting commentary if it was utilized in later chapters, but it shouldn't happen for the whole thing, especially if someone sees a body for the first time) As for the trend bit, yeah make sure to spice things up. If there's one genre that shouldn't be formulaic, its the mystery genre, and this especially applies to a fanfic of a mystery game as there are already expectations given from that.
For setting up twists, while unpredictability is important, foreshadowing is even more so. It's not a bad thing if your audience accurately guesses a twist (assuming it's due to clues you added rather than "they're X character so they have to do X thing because that's how it always is") because it means you're getting your audience to think, and when they get it right, they WILL feel happy and satisfied. Plus, they can go look back and see where all the clues were placed in, yknow? That said, it is a balancing act: if your twists are too predictable, there will not be any excitement and trials will feel like a waste of time as it's obvious who the culprit is.
I also want to state that dialouge is a key part of characterization, so make sure to look at the FTEs, Ultimate Talent Development Plan, School/Island/Salmon mode, S, and other things like that to get a key idea on how they talk and what their personality is really like. You'd think that creating an OC would be much more difficult, but the opposite is true as you can create the rules of your OC, but for canon characters, you have to initiate another writer's style and rules which makes things tricky.
To end this off, I do wanna say some other things. One is that, as someone currently reading Zero, I don't feel Ryoko is the type of person to deny the existence of luck. She's pretty emotionally driven and wears her heart on her sleeve. (Even using her love for Yasuke Matsuda to give her hope when times get tough, this isn't a spoiler btw) I feel a better rival to Celeste would would Byakuya, since he is a firm believer in logic, and gets angry when things turn out not to be logical like luck.
Also, I personally do not know what you mean by "it doesn't make sense to make a fanganronpa solely for fun." Fanganrobpas are essentially advanced fanfiction, so aside from potential fame, I think you can only really make it out of fun since you can't really make financial profit out of it like you could with original works. I get that fanganronpas take an immense amount of time to create, but that doesn't mean it still couldn't be made out of fun. In fact, it should be made out of fun as I believe joy can be a massive motivator. I would like to know what you meant there if you would like to explain.

clarifying the last point since i'm awake now; fangans are as you said, 'advanced fanfiction', and i even think without fun, there's also no point to creating a fangan. but if i'm putting that much effort into a project, i do think people should put a little more effort into making it good. if you're publishing your work to the internet, you want people to read it. i think if you're doing that, you should have it be worth people's time; give them something to think about, y'know? a question to ponder or a theme to dive into. it's fine if people don't, but i don't get it and i tend to dislike those kinds of works, since they just rely on the existence of canon characters to grab my eyes while having nothing fleshy behind it. not saying that that's wrong for people to like, it's just not what i like.

Regardless, the point is that you should look at the source material to get an idea of how certain characters are characters. Though, like you said, some characterizations are different depending on what spinoff you are looking at. Honestly Nezumi VA talked about IF and how she far prefers Mukuro's characterization and relation to junko in that than in DR3, in which she was reduced to an incest joke. Flanderization is pretty common in media, so I feel it is best to look at the closest origin of the source material first and then expand
god i really enjoy these videos where you talk about and deconstruct fangans. they always give me this burst of inspiration and energy to work on the hypothetical fangan that i've tried putting together
I agree with these points since they're really important points when it comes to writing fangans, but one big point I want to mention is that when two characters start to get close and form a friendship there's really no point in cutting the screen time between those two characters by having one of them die so fast. Like, if it's important to the narrative I can get that but at the same time give the characters opportunities to grow to see if anything changes either perspective- or even personality-wise. That way, the viewers will feel the same amount of despair as the character because of the already-established chemistry they had built up

Since you mentioned more obscure characters at the end, Danganronpa Showa (which otherwise isn't a Fancan) had both Toranosuke Ishimaru and Fuhito Kirigiri, Kiyotaka and Kyoko's grandads, as characters. Most of their canon impact is on their grandkids, Kyoko especially, so I knew I couldn't rest on their names when writing DR Showa. In Fuhito's case I had it so that Hope's Peak didn't recognise him as the Ultimate Detective, but Librarian instead, partly explaining his future resentment of the school

I would honestly love to see what someone could do with Ibuki as the blackened. This pure comic relief character completely flipped on her head into a cold-blooded killer, or maybe take the comic relief and use it in the murder. Could be an accidental death caused by pyrotechnics or something and you could watch Ibuki come to terms with what she did and how recklessly she acted. You know, see a side of the character that we didn't see in the canon? And her execution! Imagine what Monokuma could do in a concert setting, especially a heavy metal one. Most characters in the series have enough there to use as a springboard into new territory, with very few exceptions. *Slyly eyes Kokichi's non-existent backstory* But no, people just copy paste her character from 2, like why even bother? If I want to see Ibuki in Goodbye Despair, she's an extremely quick Steam download away. I don't need to peruse fan games to find her, even in a new setting. V3 has the Talent Development mode and like every other character she has unique interactions with other characters in that mode as her loud, overexcited self. And this goes for every character, not just Ibuki. I didn't go searching for new content to find the same old Nagito, Kirumi, Kaito, Hajime, Junko, you get the point. Even Kokichi has potential since he has no backstory, that's an entire backstory you can write, you can fix Kokichi if you do it right.
i like when people use the canon that's already there as a springboard for new and interesting ideas the canon couldn't explore due to having a story it needed to tell, but ibuki tragically is a character almost always copied 1-1 from SDR2, with the only difference being (well, for one, her personality gets toned down a ton, and then for the main one,) she survives. and her survival is always uninteresting to me. ibuki gets no arc whatsoever because ibuki getting an arc would ruin what makes ibuki a fangan marketabl- sorry, an interesting character to the fandom majority. she never gets the opportunity to have any sort of interesting interaction with the setting or characters - you might as well toss her a microphone, give her a little booth slightly to the left of the killing game, and let her make running commentary. she could do that, and the story would not change.

Not making a fanCan but currently brainstorming two Fangans (two because they will be attached to eachother as separate but related stories) but I really like hearing you talk about stuff like this it’s fun.
I actually have seen one starting out that has twogami. Other than that..YES. Personally I get more critical at times when I see Ryoma in these fangans or in v3 rewrites. Ryoma is a character that I value highly and if he attempts murder or kills someone in the context of the killing game I get curious why he would do that and hide it. If he just got a will to live why risk wasting it? If he doesnt have a will to live why isnt he telling us he did it? Ryoma being a murderer and attempting murder in the killing game context are two very different things and often Ryoma will not be characterized well enough to where it would make sense for him to do so. I'm not gonna be sad if Ryoma dies because he's Ryoma if the twist makes no sense in that regard. (I could even argue sometimes him being a victim could easily be executed poorly but that's another thing.) A complete side occurrence that bothers me is also when the survivors have either no conflict or no relationship with each other whatsoever. In my opinion Himiko seemed out of place out of Maki and Shuichi because I didnt think they developed a good relationship or conflict between Himiko and the other two survivors.
I think the Himiko thing could have been rectified fairly easily by having her join in the training sessions. it'd match how Shuichi joined and the two would be able to comfort each other over losing the people they were closest to in the game, and I can see Kaito reminding her of Tenko too.
With Maki, someone with a childish belief in magic being forced to accept that things aren't so simple is almost the inverse of Maki, an assassin who had her childhood stolen from her learning how to be a teenager and a bit childish.

I'm currently planning a 'season return' fanfiction with ocs (who were all in their *own* seasons), but I'm also tempted to throw in a few canon characters to give them a chance to be somewhat different from their canon depictions (actually using their talent properly, giving them more backstory/fleshing them out a bit more) but not too different. However, I'm debating if it is a good idea to mix both canon with ocs. Your video has given me some tips for if I do go the mixed route or if I toss the idea and just do canon characters lmao, so thanks for that!

I’m currently writing the Sleepyville Series, aka my Wattpad fangans which take place in different universes. Could anyone give me some tips based on my short description of it?
•The protagonist is a girl named Mirai Hikitsuri.
•Mirai hasn’t met or heard of any of the participants prior to the killing game, aside from Sayaka (Mirai being part of Sayaka’s pop group), Leon (she and her older brother were hardcore fans) and Mondo (Mirai’s older brother Daiki happens to be part of Mondo’s biker gang).
•It takes place in some sort of unreal, almost fictitious purgatory. It feels like a fever dream to Mirai.
•Most of Mirai’s connections to the cast were caused by her older brother (not included in the kg). She fears that without her brother, Sayaka would be her only friend. But even Sayaka wouldn’t be her friend if her brother hadn’t been rejected and decided to introduce Mirai to Sayaka.
•This is like Redemptionronpa and Dangan Defiance, but with Yuta and Mirai. This takes place after the Tragedy.
•A considerable amount of dead people are here.
•Mondo, Taka, Chihiro and Sayaka are supposed to be Mirai’s friends in this.
•Despite the lack of an antagonist, I wanted the cast to have a sense of unity and mutual trust.
•Most of the people Mirai meets in the beach-like setting of the killing game (Sleepyville Beach) are people that have been described by living humans that Mirai has met prior to the killing game.
•The only relevant thing she’s supposed to remember is that she passed out after seeing flashing lights.
•Mirai’s only goal in this is to make it out safely with whoever seems the most important.
•Having met Aoi, Mirai wants to bring Yuta back to life. However, realizing that most everyone here deserves to live, and that she’s encountered Sakura and Taka, greatly missed people in the world of the living, Mirai decides that she absolutely has to find a way to revive everyone.
•I intend on keeping a few key characters alive, mainly Mondo, Sayaka and Yuta.

I made my own characters and a few characters' relatives. I'm still very busy and writing most of Chapter 0 and 1. Even though I have it fully planned out, I've been writing it for about 6 months, and I still can't write the best case but Im making progress. I'm actually taking it more seriously now and I've made most of the cast's story. I still can't wrap my head around how the hell Ch.5 and 4's murder would occur, confusion is truly a disaster

I had an interesting idea for a Fancan. It mixes Danganronpa 2 and V3 to where the killing games were EXAGGERATED but not entirely FICTIONAL. I won't go entirely into the plot in case I do EVER end up making it, but it features 14 of the Danganronpa 2 cast with Peko as the protagonist and Hajime as the antagonist. Nagito died of an illness (a hint of the exaggerations in the killing games)
peko's my absolute favourite from sdr2 so count me super interested to see her perspective!
About the last tip what I do is make the "support" and "antagonist" have the same amount of good and bad traits have them do an equal amount of stuff in the class trials and let the audience pick who they think the support and antagonist are
eh, to me they're completely non-important distinctions that largely exist so people can simplify the story, and that doesn't sit right - someone put all this effort into making complex characters, and simplifying their roles in the story just ruins that. if you want a more simple narrative, i'd just seek one out rather than dumb down a complex one.

I know what fangan you're talking about for tip 2 and while I agree that Makoto's reaction, or the lack there of, brought me out of the story as well, I still kept reading it and really like pretty much everything after that, with the fourth case being probably the best one yet..
i didn't like what was present before that (REALLY didn't like it, as in, 'ranted to friends on discord about how stupid it all was' didn't like it), so without the 'best one yet' having a severe jump in quality, i still probably won't read it on my own time.
@@waterfallWieske with that character's death, it frustrated me because the setup was clearly pointing to something else; it would've been somewhat predictable, but satisfying. the protagonist yelled at a character for trying to mix cleaning products because they would've created toxic gas; i thought that the character would do it on purpose in the victim's room to kill the victim, but nope, natural causes in a 17-19y/o who didn't have a single health issue beforehand.

@@waterfallWieske Actually, hey, I...kinda have a counter argument. More so, I think a death by natural causes can work well, and a natural causes death like that could also work. But it more so someone's gonna suggest natural causes and Monokuma adds natural causes to the voting selection and goes aww man that's unfortunate and then when the trial is over everyone's questioning this, but Monokuma threatens them one way or another to not question it. Or just a mystery where in the end, it's natural causes, or maybe supernatural causes that wasn't caused by Monokuma or the participants. More so on the natural causes, maybe the argument armament is with a friend of the victim not thinking that they'd die in such a "stupid" way, "dying to natural causes in a killing game?! Are you kidding me, that's absurd!". Or with supernatural causes where supernatural shit is confirmed to be a thing, maybe you're in an argument armament facing against someone who believes in mostly natural logic, "Supernatural? *scoff* you must be joking".
But then again, I...do feel like it was anti climatic and absurd. However, in my opinion, it didn't bring me out of the story because it was *so fucking funny* that it was natural causes. I don't know I just find humor in this murder mystery where everyone is trying to figure it out, especially someone who is apparently THE MASTERMIND, and it turns out natural causes did it. The fact that such a person can set up the entire game outright fucking die to something completely natural is just kinda funny.

I'm surprised I haven't seen Peko much at all in these types of fangans especially with folks saying she's nobody without Fuyuhiko. While I disagree that she doesn't have anything I'd argue that just gives her much more potential for you to make her something especially if you leave Fuyuhiko out of the cast.
peko is such an underrated character tbh - not in the sense nobody talks about her but in the sense any discussion of her inevitably leads back to him when she's a rich character in her own right
@@DetectiveNyx It's something I like about V4 even if I haven't gotten around to reading it partially due to adhd lol. This isn't a blackened fangan like Blackened Skies(which unfortunately seems to have been canceled or put on hiatus since it's been a couple years)where she's kindve had to be included . They didn't have to put Peko in, especially alone. This is a fangan where they decided any character from the three games can be a candidate. They looked at Peko alone and knew there was stuff that could be done with her without needing Fuyuhiko being around to be glued to her side.
i do like what v4 had done with peko (though i don't really think that how they got to that point was very good - potential spoilers until the next line break but the implication was something needed to physically separate peko from fuyuhiko for her to receive the development and that it couldn't happen while the two were able to interact)
but since this video came out a few more grievances have come out which spoiled my opinion on it - particularly the author deciding to harass me across multiple platforms. i wish them no ill will nor do i want them harassed for it, but i won't be keeping up with it in the future, which is a bummer. because as you said, blackened skies is really the only other one that explores her in any meaningful way. though me and a friend were also planning on maybe putting together something? though that's more just an idea we've tossed around a bit

fuyuhiko and peko break up, and then fuyuhiko gets killed - the implication that presents is that it's impossible for peko to develop without fuyuhiko's sacrifice and a total removal of him from the narrative. (which could work if he was killed while they were together, or if she simply broke things off and they continued existing together - with both it implies "you have reached the end of your free trial of character development, you must lose your childhood friend to unlock the full product")
I don't exactly like chihiros reasoning for not liking akane. Gender is a big part of chihiros story. I feel like they wouldn't go by gender biases. Chihiro lied to have a reason for how they act but that doesn't mean they specifically thought they were too girly to be a boy. I hope this doesn't sound Transfobic. I don't think chihiro is non binary or Trans but still I don't want be transfobic
gender is a big part of chihiro's story, but their storyline is absolutely based in a gender bias. they present femininely because they associated womanhood with weakness, and that they believed it was more 'appropriate' for them to be weak if they were perceived as female. they also canonically turn down training with sakura, confirmedly the strongest of the entire THH cast, because they wanted a male trainer. none of that really has anything to do with transphobia, though.

I think it's a matter of opinion (and headcanon) if Chihiro is Trans or Non-binary. I don't personally think he's either, and I don't think it's transphobic that you don't think that way either.
But for disliking Akane, I think it's justified. Chihiro has a bias towards getting stronger with males (he probably feels more comfortable around a male than a female). I think it would be more justified if Akane had asked Chihiro if he wanted to train with her

that's not really enough; ITMLFY uses it premise to drive its plot and Kaede reacts appropriately to what happens, justifying its existence. but if you just swap everyone's talents willy-nilly and for no reason, then all you've done that's 'new' is apply a gimmick to your fangan. why's everyone's talent swapped? what thematic purpose does it have?

I mean the ones like Danganronpa 69, or the Mass Crossover Multiplayer (TvTropes) type of killing game, where instead of one particular Fangan, it's 6 or 7 or 8 or *20 like my ambitious self* fandoms merged into one.
I will take this video into account though, especially since Kaede and Nagito is in it (although every other character comes from different fandoms), and if I make sequels, then Toko and Mukuro will show up in anither killing game.
i would say no; some advice in this can certainly apply but to me a fancanronpa uses either a majority of the cast from DR or all of it.
The only fancan I've ever seen is Redemptionronpa / Danganronpa: Redemption. It's on TH-cam and chapter 2 is really sad especially the trial, you'll see what I mean if you watch it
there's definitely way more than just that one but i will be completely honest, i didn't like it

This Might be me as a someone that followed along with V4: defiance but I dont think the Hiyoko example is a good one. If I remember right Everyone still had the memories of the past and so Nagito's deception to her doesn't add up to me. If I am misinformed then I will take back what I said.
I agree to an extent. The characters definitely have their memories of each of their first games, so Hiyoko would remember Nagito’s involvement with the first trial and probably not trust him. The reaction to the betrayal was incredibly written assuming the trust had been established, but aside from some snickering and sharing evidence during the investigation, they didn’t provide much reason why Hiyoko would trust Nagito in the first place. Still, it’s one of the only nitpicks I have with Defiance so far, and set up for some amazing material, so I’m willing to let it slide.

@@DetectiveNyx I’m very late but I’d add that Leon, Chihiro, and Mondo all might’ve had genuine reactions to seeing Mukuro’s body (I can’t remember if they actually had lines or not, though I’m pretty sure Chihiro did). Also Mondo’s reaction to Chihiro’s body was somewhat genuine since he certainly didn’t expect to see the shit that Byakuya pulled. Similarly, Teruteru’s surprise was also somewhat genuine as he didn’t expect to see Twogami dead. I think it’s important to differentiate the shock between seeing a dead body, seeing a specific person dead, and seeing a dead body in a particularly gruesome state. This isn’t intended to be hate or even criticism by the way, I’m just thinking, sorry if it came off as harsh!
Hey as someone who wants to write and is writing a fanganronpa I have a question that’s only really specific to me/my game 😅. My game takes place in the same timeline/world as the actual game series, meaning that it is a new cast, but things/people like junko may be referenced in it (She’s not the mastermind I promise) so what I’m asking is how should I go about that world building? Would it also be ok to use something like monokuma as my mascot, or is that copyrighted?
To be fair, all of danganronpa is copywritten, so you really shouldn't care about that if you are not making a profit out of this project. Honestly, asumming you already created the lore of how this connects with the canon games, I feel its best to impliment bits of the lore little by little in items found when investigating a new floor/island or something.

May I take this opportunity to promote Danganronpa 52: Despair from the Heart? It's written as a prequel to V3, and if you told me that this could be the actual 52nd Killing Game in canon, I would buy it. I just want it to be less underappreciated, go to AO3 and read it.
Might use this when i do what ifs on A03 did one when Sayaka kills leon and i jump too the trial might redo it later with the investigation.
If interested try finding Thefallenone1986 on A03, i do dislike Sayaka but now 3 months after playing the game i understand her motives, but still feel bad for Makoto.
