I think it was 1963 at Fairfield Hall, West Croydon, I was 16 and I first saw the legendary Duke Ellington and his Orchestra. Most of my contemporaries were into pop, Elvis, Gene Vincent etc as was I. But a good friend of my family, knowing that I also had an interest in Jazz took me to the show.
I'll never forget it, and especially the great Sam Woodyard! I loved Gene Krupa at the time, but this was different, Sam made the drums sound musical, and the variety of rhythms was amazing! So I really enjoyed seeing this clip, wonderful!!!

The way the Sam Woodyard plays his drum solo so relaxed SHOWS he is really skilled. He Smiles during his solo and makes it look easy, but it is super complex. Mr. Wolf, the video is very well done, the audio is fantastic. Thank you for bringing this to us!

A magnificent drum solo, which swings hard, not just a sequence of rudiments and triplets.

Long long before Keith Moon played essentially the same kit, Sam Woodward showed us how to really do it! Highly underrated and a drummer that can take you places. Some SW beats make me feel like I’m floating down the River Nile

Ginger Baker gave Keith the idea. Ginger ordered a custom kit from Ludwig. Keith ordered his from Premier, and he got his first. Ginger got his a little later. Or that’s what Nettie Baker says. 😎😎

Is that Joe Morello at 3:45? I imagine he'd have very much enjoyed Sam's playing!

Ginger Baker mentioned Sam Woodyard a lot in his drum tutor and biography as a big influence. There are definitely some recognisable licks from Sam in ‘Toad’… and Baker was a big influence on Bonham - who was a big influence on everyone else….

Legend has it that Premier drums sent out 3 wood experts out to deepest Africa to source the wood for this kit. Only 1 returned and the kit made history.

That's how to play drums! Definitely a lost art form when you consider the millions of stupids out there trying to play drums today.
