n "They Don't Own Me" by Richard Ashcroft, the lyrics convey a message of independence and defiance against societal expectations and control. The song addresses the notion that nothing in life is truly free, challenging the idea of being obligated to conform to societal norms. The lyrics suggest a sense of self-empowerment and individuality, highlighting the protagonist's refusal to be influenced by others. The lines "I know that you, ain't like the other ones, march to a different beat, babe, banging a different drum" emphasize the artist's unique perspective and unwillingness to conform to the expectations set by society. The chorus, "I think I told you before that they don't, they don't own me," reinforces the song's central theme, expressing a resistance to being controlled or manipulated by external forces. It reflects a strong belief in personal autonomy and the rejection of societal pressures.

True freedom comes from abandoning ourselves to God. "You have made us for yourself O Lord & our heart is restless until it rests in you" - St. Augustine
Am still astounded by his Stafford V festival performance, after The Verve split. That massive crowd just stood and listened to his whole performance, without moving a muscle; while he sang the hits without moving from the spot he stood on. Not one person seemed to move in that whole venue, till the end - when the whole crowd erupted in a thunderous acclamation of appreciation, of a magnitude I have never seen or heard before. I have seen hundreds of bands in venues and festivals, but the applause and cheers at the end of his set has never been matched. I love this new track of his and can't wait to hear him live again

Well that seems so absurd, how can that be? I think I told you before, they don’t own you” and then the crowd joined in.. We let him have the lyric to use in his new material and we told him to run or walk with the song, before singing “You gotta roll with it” at the top of our lungs. He has made a great track here and the video, his haircut and style are fabulous. Big hugs Richard, I cried so much when you sang your last song.

He is THE MAN...THE GENIUS...the first and greatest british musical artist of the 90's...and more....LONG LIFE TO YOU RICHARD !!!
God I love this lad. For over 20 years nothing but beautiful original songs that have the power to make you cry. And now he's taking a stand. For each and every one of us. Long live and rule King Richard!
I can't stop listening to this.....genius
Is it true what they say?
Nothing in life is free
Are you looking this way
Surely this can't be
I know that you
Ain't like the other ones
March to a different beat, babe
Banging a different drum
I think I told you before that
They don't
They don't own me
I think I told you before that
They don't
They don't own me
I ain't playing their games
I am nobody's fool
Yeah, I know how it feels
I broke those rules
Are you walking with me?
Or are you running with them?
Are you ever free?
Is this something that you understand?
I think I told you before that
They don't
They don't own me
I think I told you before that
They don't
They don't own me
They don't
They don't own me
Is it really that strange
To try and find some peace?
Is it so opaque
That you still can't see?
Them, right up above
I wonder what they can hear
I guess we all mess up, baby
Mmm, we're here, then disappear
I think I told you before that
They don't
They don't own me
I think I told you before that
They don't
They don't own me
I think I told you before that
They don't
They don't own me
I think I told you before, yeah
They don't
They don't own me
