Glenn Worf: bass guitar & string bass
    Danny Cummings: drums & percussion
Produced by Mark Knopfler, Guy Fletcher & Chuck Ainlay

Mark Knopfler is one of these very, very few artists, whom I can listen to in every conceivable mood. His huge variety of songs and styles regularly guides me through any kind of days.
The first song, which came to my mind thinking about this album is 'Punish The Monkey', because it was my first favourite song of the album. Lately I've listened a lot to 'Behind With The Rent' and 'Madame Geneva's' and the more I listen to Knopfler's albums, the more I start to appreciate every single song.
To me he's one of the greatest musicians of all time.

One of his finest albums IMO and certainly one of my own personal favourite albums. We all know what a fantastic guitar player Mark is and also how he is a wonderful writer of music but I would like to also say that Mark is surely one of the best and most interesting lyricists around from this or any other era.

My experience with Knopfler and Dire Straits was a time travel sort of thing. I was a village kid and didn't start listening to English music until 2000 when I was 15 or 16 and particularly to Dire Straits until I was 19. Much of the good ones I have listened to ever since has related me to some particular phases / memories in my life. But with his music, I am mostly not in the scene / memory I relate to. Instead I go as far back as to my dad's young days in the 70s and picture the urban life then through the stories of joy and laughter he'd shared. I think that's what makes his music inseparable from me, the craving to go back to a time I have not seen and have a good time without being too ecstatic. One day, I want to meet him, talk to him, shed a couple of tears in joy and keep them as a souvenir.

I love this man...his solo music is very relaxing where his music from Dire Straits is up beat and has a lot of tongue in cheek humor in it...he is a very talented very underrated musician...he is an original and there aren't many of them left in this world...I can sit and listen to Mark talk, sing or play the guitar all day long and never get bored of him..i am a sketch artist and he inspires me to do and love what I do...watching him play the guitar in his videos...man I never had the desire to play any instrument he makes it look easy...he is one I wish would never go away....I love Mark and he probably hears that all the time...I love his eyes...they have such a soulful look very hard to recreate in a drawing

One of my favorites. Oh what am I saying? All of MK's albums are my favorites!! They are just different. And this one is different in such a lovely manner. Madame Geneva, The Fish and The Bird, In The Sky......Heart Full of Holes. Just lovely beautiful lyrical music. Thanks for finally sharing this documentary.

This is a brilliant album and to hear from the artist himself is such a treat. Just having visited London and walking the streets of Old London especially, I can attest to the immersion you feel in its dramatic and bloody history. You do feel surrounded by "the ghosts" of the past. Every song on Kill to Get Crimson is a gem.

Mark is older but not by too many days. So I think we have a lot in common musically. His musical path is much stellar than mine is. His Sultans of Swing, he should be very, very proud of. I"ve played some of the best composition for guitar known to man. And my hats off to Mark for making such a gem as Sultans. His musical language is SO deep in that piece. Not that he doesn't have loads of others that are grand too. I am amazing that anyone or band could compose, arrange a piece such as that, It really brings out so much of fine electric guitar. I have been really studying that piece and have really grown to respect such a remarkable player. The triad-triplet at the end of Sultans was hard for me to master than anything in the Concerto de Aranjuez. I have to do Sultans with a thumb pick though. Still don't know how he got that ending piece with bare fingers :)
I will probably never get to meet Mark in person, but I did meet Chet Atkins when he came to San Fransisco years ago.But it was just as a fan of Chet's. I really can understand why Chet took him under his wing because he really has a GREAT fingerpicking style to say the least ! Mark seems to have such a humble attitude. Again, I am just amazed how Mark recorded such a GEM as Sultans! It's like a classic of classics that should live on truly forever as does Beethoven's best pieces Bach and the Golden Girls :) And I adore that show !!!!

    • @Deliquescentinsight
      @Deliquescentinsight 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Nicely said. Yes Mark's finger picking is wonderful, mainly because it is kind of scrappy, it is not perfect or technical - Mark is very much a feel player, this proves the point that great music is all about reaching people's hearts, not technical perfection.

Today I am 43 years old and the first time I heard MK was in 1985 when I was passing the street holding my mother's hand, when I heard the first notes of Brothers in Armys, I was hypnotized, my mother was pulling me forward and I locked in the Front of the house of others in the middle of the street like an enchanted catatonic person, and today I was saved for having listened to those chords, because here in Brazil the ritimos are many varied but it was this guy that made me really like good music, Thanks MK And I hope someday I'll go to a show of yours before I die.

Hi Gerlain, also the same story for me! ;)
I was on the school bus going back home and, amidst all the noise and laughing and loud speaking, I heard the commercial announcing the BiA album... suddenly, the bus was absolutely silent and the only thing I could hear was this amazing song. It was something like I never had heard before. I was in complete ecstasy (not that one!)...
Because my father was against foreign music, and there was no internet at the time (yes we are old... damn), I was able to buy the LP one I was about 15. At that time, we finally had internet at school and I was able to find everything I could about Dire Straits and their songs.
Shortly after (one year or two), they launched 'On Every Street' and I found out that Lisbon was part of the tour. I only let my father rest when he accepted to let me go to the concert. It is, definitely, one of my best memories.
Brother in Arms is the song that makes me happier when I'm happy and comforts me when I am not.
Its a 32 year old love, what can one say? :)
