Shawn Lane: The Complete 1992 "Powers of Ten" Interview

  • In 1992, Shawn Lane sent me an advance cassette of his upcoming debut album, Powers of Ten. This Warner Brothers release was a solo album in the truest sense. Working in his home studio, Shawn played all of the instruments, created the arrangements, and did the engineering and producing. He composed every song, except for a Beckian cover of Ray Gomez’s “West Side Boogie.” I thought this was an extraordinarily auspicious debut album, and we agreed to do a phone interview to promote its release. Our wide-ranging conversation took place on June 22, 1992.

I was lucky enough to have known Shawn and even luckier to have watched Shawn record some of Powers of Ten, Shawn had a small studio set up in the small attic room and even though the drum parts are a machine he had a drum set and was a monster on them, but Shawn may have been a better piano player than a guitar player, his knowledge of music was mind blowing, he was truly a genius. I still have a cassette of music he was working on in 1994 that he gave me. RIP my friend.

i think i called you looking for obscure Terry Bozzio recordings, after Shawn gave me your phone nr. during a chit chat at NAMM. i was only getting to know him by repeat bump-into's at NAMM. was hoping he'd sell me 1 of his guitars when he moved over from Ibanez to Vigier...

Thanks for sharing! I just realized that Shawn came up with his first album after playing guitar for 20 years, and was 30 at the time. What's also amzing to know is that he was self taught, and produced almost all of the power of ten album by himself. In addition, Allan Holdsworth and Pat Matheny would be so proud if they know their influences on Shane, that helped him to become one of the greatest guitar player every existed.

Great to hear still looking for the one note per string examples with fingerings.
Shawns fingerings and groupings of notes which fingers should be played is crucial to the music. few can teach that…photographic memory and ambidextrous.

It's funny when you brought up how he was the first you heard speak about Tatum. The first I ever heard about Tatum was in the upcoming guitarists column when Dan Stearns was put in the magazine. I became a fan of his after talking with Dan. Thanks so much for the release of this AMAZING interview. I felt like I was talking with him myself. One of those conversations when the first thing you do when you get off the phone is go to the local music store to find an album he talked about to dig into. I remember doing that when I got to befriend Michael Romeo, he was the one who got me into ALLAN HOLDSWORTH. He even helped me to understand more of what he was doing since it was so new to me.

Very inspirational... I also write and perform all the parts on my compositions... do the drums on the keys just like Shawn had done... everything is synth/midi except for the guitar work which is organic guitar playing... Mr Lane has set a high mark to aspire to and frankly, I see it as an investment to in creativity and musical development by doing all the instrument parts by yourself... it's challenging but, I feel it's worth the effort in the long run... thanks for posting this interview :)

What an interesting interview! Really cool to hear the process of recording Powers Of Ten (the micing two amps was especially interesting). I know no one is probably interested in this, but I wish he talked about his clean rhythm guitars that he used on Get You Back and Illusions for example. It's such a nice sound with the chorus that he put on his guitar. I'm curious what specific chorus he was using? If anyone knows, then please let me know ;)

Allan was selling some Mike Varney CD's and Shawn was on it and I have been hooked ever since. It has been 20 years since he passed....Peace and love...

I would say that out of all the guitarists that the world has had access to, meaning they were on a label, made at least one record and had mass distribution (or something close to it), Shawn Lane has got to be in the top ten of rock/fusion/ shred guitarists. Even that compliment is pretty limiting to what he was all about, I guess that would be my version of a clickbait comment if I was some world renowned guitar review site/person. There was so much to Shawn, musically and I admit it took me a while to appreciate some of his stuff because it took me awhile to appreciate certain kinds of jazz and fusion in general. Like the Powers of Ten. He played a few of those tracks in the Power Licks and Power Solos tapes ( I got my copies off of eBay around 2010 when I first discovered Shawn). Anyway, I couldn't get into the ballady stuff from that at first. I also had the Tritone Fascination, which I loved along with the CD/DVD thing he did where he's playing Indian music. I don't have it anymore and am too lazy for Google right now, but Lane fans know what I'm talking about. That particular project I loved right from the start because I love Indian music in general and Shawn's take with his delay pedals was beautiful. His power trio stuff with Hellborg and Sipe ( or is it Snipe? Sorry, if so) was also incredible. The man was a genius. So, thank you for sharing this interview I can't wait to listen tonight when I get home from work.🎸🤘✊

"he plays a lot of cool sweeps" Shawn almost NEVER did sweep picking. Like .01% of his playing was sweep picking. He also basically never did two-hand tapping. He did tap octaves but that was about it. It's a bit embarrassing to hear people say things as if they knew someone's playing when clearly they do not know a sweep picked lick from any other, apparently. Shawn did pure alt picking, hybrid picking, semi-alt picking with hammers/pulloffs in between as well as hammer-ons from nowhere (basically hammering to a new string w/o picking it obviously).

Bob Gjyka amp class a amp and holmes mississippi bluesmaster amp heads on 4x10 cabs. Not again , grey pianos flying amp…… illusions, get you back….. holmes amp………. esperanto likely Bobs amps.. Also he mentions close mic off side of cone and 10 inch speakers not 12s…he said EQ treatment and mic placement off side of speaker cone not straight on mic…so peavy made a preamp which allowed EQ treatment so 3 or 4 band EQ treatment or manual set EQ..its flat from what I understand and with that treatment one can adjust EQ a bit per tone knob and get the focused tone or sound Im wanting to get I found that no matter what guitar used , that the EQ controls on the guitar mixed better and actually worked better with the preset EQ treatments. I did an experiment using several guitars which were not anyones favorite guitar…. I had each person bring an instrument they did not like at all… Soon as those guitars were plugged into the EQ treatment, the tone potentiometers react way better and will quick focus the sound your chasing..Everyone agreed the instruments sounded great and it was not the instruments fault per say it was how it was EQ’D…. 10S AND 15S Sounded great even better then 12s. On some days the 12s sounded great and the next 10s or 15s sounded far better The EQ treatment was flat so not alot of speaker movement….So mic placement off edge of cone yielded the best tones. Bob told me Shawn used some preamp which he did not understand him using it before the amps but the EQ treatment was in that peavey unit I should say peavey captured the EQ from Holmes and Gjyka amps id say they took Frequency readings from each amp and the EQ treatment helps to reach the ideal recording levels..To get the best tone to tape or digital recordings…
