The idea of running from cars is silly, but somehow when you're being chased by one my heart begins to race like I'm gonna get run over in real life. I love this game, if you think about it, being chased by cars is horrifying.
Cars are genuinely horrifying. I agree that if you think about it, cars kill people all the time. It really is a great concept for this game.

It’s the way he addressed the music that usually leads to something dramatic and funny, the music being “in the hall of the mountain king” being played by the truck, addressing the corvette coming, and the cut to the silent game over. 😂
The car AI is surprisingly good. I liked how some would pincer attack you rather then just all go in a big clump together.
I also liked how the cars had radios and music playing. It organically gives background music while also acting as a sound cue to let you know where or how close some cars are.
Over all this was a well done game.

Engine noise could use some work though, sounds like near every car is using the same little inline 4. Box vans usually have loud, worn-out exhausts from constant work; any body style from the 70s would typically be packing a V6 or V8; the big semi hauler shouldn't be the only thing that sounds like it runs on diesel. For a game with otherwise solid sound design, that really stands out.
As a Taiwanese, I really appericated to see some dev put all their effort to recreating the most accurate scenario of our country's traffic situations.
first thing I saw on the news when I went there for vacation was someone riding a motorbike, stopped at a red light, getting absolutely decimated by a speeding car from the opposite side

@@bendingdemon6483 Yes, as Benn just explained it was the song synthesized by the IBM 7094 and was the very first thing a computational system ever was able to 'sing' It was then used by Arthur C. Clarke in the novel during Hal 9000's death scene due to the aforementioned author having actually been present at the showing of the computer. The reason I am claiming it to be connected given this game's theme and content is the overlap of murderous robots/machines.

Yeah, this game's strong suit is the gameplay. The cars move around in ways that make sense and, if you cross a barrier, you can see them reroute themselves to go around it. It's really cool to see
I think the game nails atmosphere pretty well too though. The signs strewn about with eerie premonitions alluding to death and car accident related injuries really sells it for me
Maybe a strange place to bring up, but I feel like it shows that you don’t need tremendously smart AI for simulating life. The car movements are extremely believable to be driven by people even though it’s literally just driving to you as fast as possible.
@@sugarkane1571 I would say that it's a little more complicated, I agree that it's believable but they're only re-routing because the cars are told to go for the player, and then given the means and limitations to do so. To truly imitate life you must give an Ai the power to have wants and motivations completely independent from orders given to it. I think we're surprisingly close, but the computing power that would be required for life is unknown and likely astronomical.

i like that that your first encounter with the police car it was under human control, and was trying to defend you, it got partially wrecked by the dump truck and the officer was killed, and then the flaming wreck came to life and chased you around.

It was actually two completely different cars. The flaming police vehicle was a SUV, the other one helping you was a standard police car.

Being run over is a fear implanted in us at a very young age, thats why this works very well. I would love to see more vehicles in the future. Like the tanks near the beginning could could be a slow moving ranged enemy that makes you constantly move, or get blown up. Motorcycles could be very fragile swarming enemies that tip over easily. Monster trucks could be a boss. Trucks with explosive barrels that blow up on impact. A car carrier trailer could release cars on impact. Lots of design space here 😄

I completely agree with Manly's thoughts on the story. It's not bad or anything, but you're not gonna sell this game to someone off of it; you're gonna tell them it's a horror game where you dodge cars trying to get you, and that gameplay is shockingly tense. This full game is just more of demo which is exactly what I wanted.
The gameplay is definitely the highlight and is most certainly what people would play this for. The story however doesn’t really make sense to me, mc tried to kill her sick daughter with a knife and is stopped by frank, but an ending has you kill frank with a snowplow? Maybe I wasn’t keeping track but the pacing there seemed very convoluted. I think it could have gone without a “plot” personally

@@Generic-ODST well from the looks of things it wasn't the mc's daughter, the mc and jose were being threatened to take care of andrea by frank. i still dont really understand why the mc killed andrea instead of just running away, like what was that supposed to accomplish?? maybe she knew how much pain andrea was in and wanted to put her out of her misery, but i still dont exactly understand why she would do that while he was still actively in the house with a gun
Growing up 2 of my favorite thrillers were Christine and Maximum Overdrive. Seeing this game in a sense encapsulate the same feeling of terror as you're running from (supposedly) possessed vehicles trying to kill you, it gives me a sense of nostalgia. Maybe we'll see an actual Christine game of similar structure in the future?

I love how the ice cream truck is playing that one song and not one of the other typical ice cream truck songs. All I could hear was Miku's grandfather singing the lyrics which made the game both more and less scary. Like robots with sentience; cars with sentience and this one in particular is singing "Daisy, daisy" while trying to murder you in cold blood!

I really like the environment. Especially the alleyway in-between the buildings getting narrow, the deeper you go into the dark abyss.

King do have that fear of rolling American steel. Overdrive was best as a short story but I think Christine went nearly equal with its movie, though the books by far my favourite. That bit in Overdrive where the semis are circling, and waiting...ugh. Beautiful. ❤❤
The execution is damn good. The AI makes it really like those cars are alive and doing everything they can to kill you in one hit.
Anything regardless of its absurdity can be a horror game as long as it can kill you or make you feel like dying.. Like schools and assigment, bullies, aliens, scp, sentient cars, zombies, anime, everything
I'm not kidding, I used to have nightmares of stuff like this when I was a little kid. When you first started getting chased down, it brought me back to those horrifying nightmares. This might be one of the most unsettling horror games I've ever seen. Incredible

Dang this might be one of my most favorite horror games you’ve done. Like it’s just such a good idea and it was executed perfectly. I love how you cant outrun the cars but instead have to outsmart them and use their cumbersome proportions against them. And the music some cars play is the cherry on top. Hall of the mountian king was too fitting for this.

Carmageddon was a “vehicular combat” racing game.
It’s a street race, but it’s open world and all the drivers are also trying to damage and total each others cars. Last car standing wins (or you can finish the race first, but that’s not as fun).
I loved that game growing up and I think it holds up pretty well, especially the sequels!

I think the coolest part about this game was how some cars had odd quirks you'd see in your day-to-day; such as that SUV with the logs sticking out from it's window.

The fucked up bit early on with the car 'screaming' and then going silent when it hits the barrier-it was very muffled screaming, leading me to think some poor person was inside the car unable to control it, before being either killed or knocked unconscious with the impact

Interesting take on the 'helpless horror' type of game-normally your defense is ultimately that you're either smarter or faster-but here, it's that you're more agile. Cars have a momentum and a turn radius to them that you don't.

I cant help but feel a nervousness seeing real life car barriers as the safe zones in this game, and how much of architecture in our own lives are based around praying we dont get hit by tons of metal when just walking down the street. cars really are the dominant species on the planet...
It's the first thing I think about when I see houses on the highway who are so close to the road that they back out of their driveway onto a 65 mph two lane. No big sturdy fences in their yard, no trees blocking anything, they're basically just waiting for a drunk driver to slip on the steering wheel for just 2 seconds and come plowing directly into the living room on Christmas Eve.

I remember seeing the demo from someone else and the AI was quite basic but still the game concept was nice. I wouldn't have imagined it would get this much better! I'm seriously impressed.
The multiple three gunshots is a nice touch. Three of anything is an international sign of distress

It's funny how simple this game is on paper yet how effective it is: some of us pass by so many cars a day they become passive scenery. However, all it'd take is a random one to swerve at the last second and so much can go wrong: how could you expect it? Also I love how Manly doesn't scream and howl and act out, he makes these games a soothing part of my day with his collected demeanor and often meaningful insight.
(SPOILERS)
Here's the story as best as can I can determine: we are a doctor at a hospital where a girl named Andrea was treated, likely for cancer or another terminal illness that also killed her mother. When it becomes clear that she does not have long to live, she's discharged home, but we also perform some outpatient care to try and keep her comfortable as she gets ready to pass away. Andrea's father, Frank, a violent and unstable man following his wife's death, sees that we bonded with Andrea during her stay and, out of desperation, he kidnaps us and holds us captive in his basement, threatening to kill Jose (either our husband, boyfriend, or close friend) and our family if we don't treat his daughter. Andrea, however, while kept alive by the medicine Frank is providing, is not getting better but instead is suffering so much she convinced us to kill her before Frank can stop us and we escape. Sometime later, after we return to a normal life, a completely deranged Frank ambushes and kidnaps us, intending to act on his threat. However, on the way to also kidnap Jose so he can finish us both off, he spins out on the ice and snow and crashes. We survive, but to protect our family we either find and kill Frank or go to the police.
Naturally the car segments are probably hallucinations or delusions caused by head trauma from Frank's crash, related to our pursuit of Frank or his pursuit of us, depending on your perspective. His gunshots that we hear are probably actually directed at us, loud enough to bleed into the delusions.
Edit: Thinking on it, there's probably a decent amount saying this is a paranormal or afterlife experience as well. The crash may well have killed both Frank and the protagonist, dragging them into this dark and hostile world where the spirits take the form of careening vehicles to hunt them as punishment, Frank for his violent ways and us for having killed Andrea. Frank tries to fight back with his gun but runs out of bullets and ultimately gets cornered, while we find a way to evade the spirits and escape, likely reviving near the car wreck site.
Honestly, the story seemed forced, like, I wouldn't promote this game to others based on it. The premise of cars running amok on their on would be better without an explanation such as hallucinations. It should had been paranormal, not mental... but who am I to say.
@@will88k It could very well have had a paranormal angle, maybe as a result of the crash both Frank and the Protagonist almost die and get trapped in a limbo, to punish Frank for his violent ways and possibly to punish the doctor for killing Andrea. That was just my initial approach
I'd like to believe the murder/abuse plot has nothing to do with the maximum overdrive situation, and that it's just an unrelated apocalypse that happened to occur.

My theory is that this is after some kind of nuclear war or something, because when a nuclear bomb, or a meteorite or a big bomb in general that affects the ecosystem explodes, the unaffected area will start to be covered in snow, it may be a meteorite or a nuclear bomb, and that caused the cars to come to life, the story being told perhaps it's because of some of the cars having the people she recognizes inside of them, and i don't think they are souls or a purgatory, because inside of one of the cars it can be heard screaming, and after it crashes the screaming stops, and i don't think that's so soulfull(?) to me, as for the purgatory, if it's a purgatory, in which you are not able to escape or something, then how does the protagonist escape? And there's police cars too, why would it be a purgatory if there's people helping you? As for the gunshots, it may be someone trying to defend himself from the cars, or most likely the police, another theory i have is that cars kill the people inside of them, and police cars can't because they tend to help people perhaps? But it's just a theory, a game theory-

Dude I don’t know how you kept your composer, I play games like F.E.A.R, condemned, outlast, soma amnesia, and sometimes I play them for comfort but this game had me on edge the whole way
I think the reason cars make for such a surprisingly good horror game mechanic is because it makes it possible for the threat to be significantly faster than you, which usually doesn't work mechanically. In most horror games, the thing chasing you has to be slow because otherwise it would be impossible to escape. The best they can do is to try to put obstacles in your way and make you think carefully about escape routes or else you get cornered. But with cars, they are naturally way faster than you, but their poor maneuverability, their inability to turn in place, and the fact that they have to be moving fast to kill you makes them escapable. It is an entirely unique twist on the typical 'being chased by a thing trying to kill you' element of horror.
Super tense game. To me it’s like having an actual nightmare where you’re being chased by something and nothing makes sense but in the context of the nightmare it’s perfectly logical.
Reminds me of a nightmare I had as a kid, where I was being chased through a neighborhood by a bus.
This is surprisingly good horror. The story is disheveled but the gameplay and setting/levels/environment were incredibly effective. I hope you've learned your lesson about taunting possessed homicidal motor vehicles...

I’m not sure I’ve heard one use that tune in real life. I feel like movies and analog horror has made it extra creepy.
I actually think about this concept when i was trying to sleep like a year ago, Why there is no movie about electric cars that got hacked and coded to kills human, thats sounds like a pretty cool concept.
And surprisingly someone made a game out of it!
This game makes me think of the episode "Attack of the Autobots" from Generation 1's "Transformers" cartoon. Megatron infiltrated the base of the Autobots and infected their recharging chamber pods with a personality destabilizer that turned those in the pods evil, albeit temporarily. It was a good episode in an overall awesome series, and it leaves me to wonder if that episode somewhat inspired this idea. Either way, I like it!

I loved the demo and I love the full game. The tense atmosphere, the weaving of small story points here and there really made this sad and edge-of-seat horror. Your evasion of the cars and trucks was super!! We almost didn't need the story because the chases were so well done, but there was a fairly tragic story underneath.
*Spoilers follow with my interpretation of the story*
You are the nurse who was taking care of Frank's daughter Andrea in the hospital. The girl liked you and wanted you to visit her. So Frank kidnapped you to take care of her at home under threat of harm to your family.. The note was shown briefly (~14 minutes):
_"Understand I had no choice. Andrea already lost her mother and now she has to fight the same disease. She can't do it on her own. You know how to take care of her and she likes you. I have to keep working so I can get her medication. I know you will do the right thing. If not, then Jose and your family will pay for it."_

I'm not sure if Andrea killed herself but I think you did and then tried to run. Frank chases and then hits you with the car maybe. , leaving you with a concussion so all of this seems like a dream. But you're worried about your own child, Jose. And you either hear the ice cream truck for example because of your own child, or that is Frank's memory of his daughter. In one ending, you wind up killing Frank to save your own life and in the other, the police are able to successfully intervene.
But as I said before - even without the story - this was a really cool game.
I think it tells that the nurse gave mercy to Andrea. If painkillers didn't cut it, and she's discharged from hospice, she's done for.
The nurse knew better so they mercies Andrea ahead which Frank couldn't accept. The nurse definitely more experienced by fighting the illness alongside the patient and has grounds to do that through their expertise and experience. They have to run back home chased by Frank even when his car is immolated due to crash with a truck in a tunnel. Which in the end, it's up to you to run to the police or finish Frank by your hands using the truck that ends up immolated him.
I think the nurse would get a criminal court but pardoned by the juries for the complexity of the issue. The nurse definitely has the best intention but letting themselves abducted and abandoning their own child as well as the equally important hospice nurse is just as troubling as the crime. I'd pay my medical friend for their troubles because I couldn't stomach a lot of their personal experiences. Still better than the other way, being immolated with Frank in a car crash.
If I have to verdict it, Frank brought it to himself. I get and understands why he did it, but it's a lose-lose situation he has to accept and the nurse has high obligations to be somewhere else and is just equally a victim as Frank is to fate. Knowing how medical workers felt, probably not the first time either they had their heart thrown a wrench either.

I was hoping Manly would say at the end why he thought half way through that the baby doll made sense, do you have a theory on what the baby doll had to do with being strapped to the cars?

@@defaulted9485 There’d be no way she would get acquitted. The law doesn’t allow people to use necessity or duress to defend murder charges. Frank might have been self-defense, but she would still be convicted of Andrea’s murder. At best, the nurse’s circumstances would be mitigating factors, or lead the prosecutor to avoid bringing charges, but she’d still probably be convicted if indicted.
@@PanicLedisko I think the doll served as a sad symbolic reminder of Andrea's young life lost to disease as well as murder.

when the cars hit something and you see one of its wheels freak out i can’t help but imagine its equivalent to shaking your hand after bumping it really hard into a table or chair. also how disturbing that the area with so much blood had the ambulance and FREE CANDY truck

The cars being invincible purely as necessity for gameplay does nothing to cut the legitimate, primal horror this game evokes. Having nothing direct to fight back with save your ability to dodge and weave, listen and avoid, it so naturally draws your whole focus into it, which makes the inevitable suddenness of that one car you didn't notice catching up so shocking.
And all without anything one could call a jumpscare in good conscience.
This is the one game that's been able to consistently make me jump. I'm not normally freaked out by the idea of getting hot but the tension of being chased and then ultimately ran over literally hits me so hard. Even when it narrowly missed I still jump. So good job game! You are very effective horror that uses jumpscares in a way that I don't find annoying!
Yeah, and the Doppler effect makes all the difference when you're trying to determine the speed of the thing chasing you only by sound
Getting chased by a semi-truck is terrifying. Like that scene in Terminator II but on steroids.
I played a bit of this game recently, and was really hoping you would make a video on it so I wouldn't have to face the anxiety, lmao
This has insane potential for VR. Don’t think it gives me too much of a rush through a monitor but this as a vr horror game would be nerve racking
This game helped me discover that I am way more scared of cars than I thought I was
My heart races when I hear the cars approach, every time.
The songs the cars play range from creepy to absolutely panic-inducing, and the thought that the cars are playing songs to mess with you while they hunt you down gives me CHILLS

A pretty simple game, but an effective one making use of a very natural fear. From young we are taught to be wary of vehicles, as the danger of getting run over is very real. The game really makes you realise how dangerous motor vehicles actually are, and how easily a car or a truck can change from an innocuous, everyday thing to become a high speed death machine. You will now appreciate bollards and road safety barriers a lot more.
As for the story, yeah it mostly serves to explain how you are transitioning from level to level via payphones. It is pretty clear that the MC is in some sort of purgatory. From what I gather, MC is a nurse at the hospital Andrea was at. She had grown close enough to Andrea such that she would visit her even after she was discharged from the hospital. But Frank, who had grown mentally unwell from losing his wife, decided to kidnap the MC and force her to look after Andrea, threatening to go after Jose and MC's family if she didn't. But MC saw that Andrea was suffering in pain and decided to mercy kill her. Frank overpowers the MC, stuffs her into the trunk of his car, and goes after Jose for revenge. But Frank's car gets into an accident, and MC ends up in purgatory. Your choice at the end determines whether the MC dies or clings to life.

Reminds me of a old horror movie called 'Maximum Overdrive' where literally every vehicle becomes sentient and kills every human
I immediately made that connection too, idk anything about the dev or their reason for making the game but I wanna think that they took inspiration from that movie but added an overarching story to it.
I loved that movie growing up. For those who haven’t watched it, the premise was that an unseen alien force took over all of earth’s electronics to eradicate humanity. It still makes me laugh that cars weren’t really affected by it, just diesel trucks. For anyone wondering what’s that’s funny, diesel motors require very little electronics to start, and once running require none. Cars on the other hand.😂
@@sddragon28 In the movie itself, just about any machine comes to life, like vending machines. It's lightly hinted in the original short story that personal cars were loyal to the humans.

After "Rustbucket revenge", I fell in love with car horror! Also, this game release out this year... I really want a horror game with similar content to be released on Android! Even if it's low-poly! Although it will also have its own charisma, even in VHS format!!🤤😍

I don't know why but the ice cream truck blaring ice cream music while chasing manly was hilarious.
The first ending felt like a purgatory of sorts, you join the rest in hunting down others. I don’t really understand the story itself though, if anyone wants to fill me in please do! :D

@@nichole_bmx8313 I could be wrong but it seems like they were a friend group of sorts but then when the wife of Frank died he threatened the main Char’s family and the other friend to get him to help take care of the daughter. He snapped and killed her or mercy killed her and then it seems like Frank tried to killing him as a result and maybe left to go after Jose (the other friend) and his family.
@@ntfoperative9432 yeah it doesn't really though. We don't know who our MC is or who Jose is to her, who Frank and his daughter are to her, or why anything's happening. Was she a nurse? Was that why Frank wanted her to care for Andrea? There was a line that was like "Frank knew better than to talk about his dead wife until the night he said nothing was ever the same"... and then the MC killed Andrea--- I don't know. Who's Jose? I don't know what's going on. I initially thought they were, like, a step-family situation but it's all very confusing. Cars go brr tho
@@ntfoperative9432 the entire "Story" or lack of it basically is pretty certainly the result of an afterthought of wanting to add some sort of a story to the game, and it feels pretty cheap. The game itself is pretty good, I don't see the point of the story as it's neither really convincing nor has any consistency.
If anything I'd want to skip it. I'd prefer it soo much if this was like a dude stuck in a loop after being hit by a car, just suffering for eternity. Truly horrifying

This is easily one of the most creative game ideas I've ever seen. Even though a movie did it first, it's taken too long for someone to make a game of it.

I don't think that's ridiculous. Seeing a car that weighs 2000 lbs or 5000 lbs rushing towards you is scary to me. One slip from the driver can kill you instantly.
There was a Stephen King short story based on this concept called Trucks where the radiation from a comet overhead brings all the vehicles in a world to life, and at first they try to kill all the people, but then they start to break down and realize they need humans to keep them fixed and fueled, so they wind up enslaving humans.

I clicked on this video because the premise makes me think of Maximum Overdrive, possibly Steven King's goofiest movie. He says he was "cooked out of his mind" and didn't know what he was doing, and though he's never directed another movie since, he has stated he'd like to try directing one sober.
