I live in the UK and as a lifelong player of the guitar I joined Bryan Sutton's superb ArtistWorks guitar school and this led me to start playing the mandolin and joining Mike's school. This was back in 2014. As a raw beginner, Mike encouraged me to cross the Atlantic to attend the 12th and, as it turned out, the last Mandolin Symposium, in 2014. He assured me that I could both cope and benefit from the experience, this judgment being based on what he had seen of my video submissions. It was an amazing experience and to attend one of David Grisman's classes was one of many highlights and to chat over breakfast and hear him describe playing at the Royal Albert Hall in London was just great. Both Mike and David are inspirational players and teachers and they and the other tutors at the Symposium fed my desire to progress on this wonderful instrument - the mandolin. The music appreciation sessions which took place straight after breakfast were really interesting and revealing interviews with each and every one of the tutors. They gave one an insight into how these wonderful players developed as musicians. It was great to see this video!
I love these armchair critics here who shriek "out of tune!" It's called the "art of improvisation" and the "musical journey", not only are these men technical masters , they are true artists, not fearing the occasional "off" note! It's all jazz!

Awesome, Spectacular, Incomparable! Dawg music at its finest! Thanks David and Mike! You truly make this world a much finer place! Encore! Encore!
2 of the greatest! A moment in time...
Mike Marshall is of the most well rounded musicians playing the mandolin today. I can't get enough of his playing.
MM is a master for sure.
I went to the first mandolin symposium. It was incredible. I hope they start doing it again someday.
Two Masters. Love when you guys play together.
Great jam. You know things are getting heavy when Mike Marshall stops smiling.
Haha. The Dominic Leslie name drop. That dude would play his mandolin for us in High School gym class! Legend!
It's a Giacomel mandolin. He seems to really like them these days. He even imports them from Italy and sell them on his website.
I really like the F3, without the horn (F5). I have a two point in the works.
I hear that mandolin builder from Italy makes very good guitars also
Grisman could play an old bike frame his playing tone etc would still be recognisable as "Grisman"
maybe he needs to string one up hahaha
Heavenly and masterly played.. Super inspiration :-) Thanks
Sweet ~ those were the days.
What is that 2-point Dave is playing? Sounds loud and rich.
I’m 57… but I wonder if Mike and David “get” that they are OUR Bill and Jethro?
Nice 👌
Good Charlie Waller joke told by Grisman right at the end.
Grass is growing,, Nice playing fellas
THE MANDOLIN IS THE BEST SOUNDING INSTRUMENT EVER CREATED ! ( CASE CLOSED )
heavy...yes!
Is that a little dog/wolf on David's mandolin?
it's a dawg
I want that shirt.
Great! Which Grisman tune is this?
Matthew Rockwell Sokolic it's not dawgology is it?
❤❤❤❤❤
Uffffff !!! Spectacular!
bitter beer face at 1:15. Too funny. Yeah that's a missed note.
Wonderful playing. Maybe I'll burn my Mandolin now !
😱
anybody got a name for that song?
Janice
+thomas kingsley thank you
+and then i said no problem. it's a little quicker on the album and in tune too :)
oh it is! gotta love the internet. listening to the album right now (paid for it oc). It's a lovely song.
Janice!
Yes, "Janice" track #6 on Hot Dawg CD, produced 1979.
Not out of tune at all it's the weird dischords that make this seem awkward to the ear. It's a symposium. They are flashing some leather.

please make more of you
The dawg is big dawg now! He put a lot of weight on
sorry but, but. okay 1:15 and bad note and bitter beer face!!
David is bit out of tune, but doesn't matter he is awesome!
the old joke: mandolinists spend half their time tuning, the other half playing out of tune.
LOL .... gotta admit, one of them darn A strings always goes out after a few tunes
Davids Mandolin is slightly out of tune though
Possibly for tonal counterpoint?
Well its diggerent
