That cabover leak is VERY common in all truck campers. Don’t feel bad for “missing” it when you were looking at it with the seller. It’s very doable to fix that. As for the lifting mechanism, look into linear actuators. They are electric powered lifts that will help you lift it on your own. I’ve seen some for $50 online. ☺️ you got this girl!

There are canvas sealers and cleaners for about 50 bucks that will help, but you do have to reapply every so often to maintain. It will be interesting to watch you do this process and see the final product. Good luck, keep motivation positive.

The leaks are common on ALL campers, 5th wheels, some RVs, and truck campers, etc
I’m sure the tear drops are probably the same but those things are over priced 🧐
You will need to seal around the air ducts, fans, windows, wiring holes, etc and then some kind of coating, probably a rubber type coating

Hey Vic, not sure what kind of crank is on the pop top but maybe you could a socket attachment and use an impact driver to run it up and down. Some wd40 may loosen the mechanism. The same idea with the impact driver could be used in the jack up poles. Hole it goes well. Big ❤ from the Aussies….

Try and remember that your camper is light duty and weighs nothing compared to the truck haul weight so there is no need for the best or a heavy duty tie downs. Find a set that is rated for the campers weight and they will outlast the camper and your next one to.

I purchased an RV recently, a 2016 which isn’t that old, looked great on the lot…but got it home and all the major systems were a mess. I had huge buyers remorse. However, I fixed everything myself, turned it into an offgrid unit, installed EG4 inverter with 600 amp hour batteries, 1000 watts of solar panels, a larger fresh water tank, deleted the black water toilet and went with an incinerator toilet, did all the work myself to save money. Long story short…I live full time in my RV now, no mortgage, no electric bill. Smaller simpler life.

But I knew that before I bought it. I will be redoing the inside. I wish you the best of luck. dont beat yourself up too bad.. Maybe I'll see you on the road. It's going to be my new life. Take that axle to any local machine shop. They can probably have the old bearing race removed in 20 minutes and shouldn't cost you more than $50 or so. It's common for that to happen when removing old bearings. Congrats on the new setup, you will have a much nicer living/cooking/sleeping area once you get everything setup and im sure it will make it much more enjoyable to plan longer trips.

Finally, SOMEONE that knows something about truck axles. I left the same comment earlier. Although, I couldn't disagree more on the camper. BAD choice, sell it before you find all the problems. Truck campers are MUCH more difficult to work on than towables, cost more, and are more prone to leaking - ESPECIALLY a hybrid pop-top!

I have been doing renovation and restoration work for many years. The key to not getting overwhelmed and going crazy is to make a list of all the things that need to be addressed and look at each one as a separate project. Tackle each item one at a time instead of looking at everything all together. That's when it becomes overwhelming. You should be able to lubricate all the components of the roof raising system to make it work easier. Also, you can replace/modify the camper jack cranks to be able to use a cordless drill and socket to waaay easier crank the jacks. And by the way, I use RMR86 to get rid of mold and mildew stains. Comes in a spray bottle that you spray on the area in question and wipe away with a rag. As you are dealing with each so called unwanted problem, just know that when you finally hit the road you will be a little more intimately familiar with your rig than if you didn't have to work on it at all. I wish you good fortune and good health.

  • @davymurphy3073

Man those scrapes suck. Obviously not there with the truck but the inner bearing race that the ball bearings came out of can usually be (carefully) cut off the axle so you don't have to replace the axle. Maybe check into the electric motors for the top of your lifting posts. That hard to crank top could just be lubrication of the pulleys and/or cable slides. Armchair diagnosing here, but just my experience.

I just recently sold a larger sunlite camper, there really well built compared to the other manufacturers. If you didn’t know you can add a set of larger wires around 6ga with a breaker going from your truck battery to the camper battery with an Anderson connector in the middle and your truck will charge the camper battery much faster than it would with the factory connector.

For anyone else that might be interested in buying a used RV, try everything first! Like Victoria says, these things are built very cheaply. Crank it up and down, run the stove, test the refrigerator, etc. If the seller won't allow that, move on. If it smells, if the roof is soft and spongy, or you see water stains, pass, lol. This doesn't guarantee that you won't run into surprises, but it does limit them.

It's easy enough to remove the race part that is stuck on your axle, last one I did I ran a weld on it with an arc welder then wedged it off with a cold chisel. Some can be cut off with a small angle grinder, using a worn down cutting disc to get into the tight corner. I completely remodelled an old fold up camper, didn't know much about it when I started, but after a few weeks labour I knew a lot more, your one looks better than mine did when I started it. The mold does not necessarily mean it's leaking in that spot, campers get a lot of condensation, the damp from that causes mould.

Now that I've said it, I want to say, keep on doing what you are doing because no matter what anybody says differently, you are having a positive impact on at least ONE person (almost certainly way way more than just me) out here. You just keep doing you and I will keep watching (when I'm at home) to see what you're up to in your life, and to get more inspiration.
I really love the blonde look on you, it really brings out your eyes so much better and they are absolutely beautiful, which makes me so envious. Ahh, to be young again. I also want to give you some positive encouragement. I've been watching you for a couple of years now, and wasn't here in the early days, however I have seen all the videos on your youtube and enjoy them. On that note, there was always an air of polish in your personality. I think for the camper top a boat or RV upholstery place would be best .. they can remove panel by panel of the fabric and use that as a template and cut and sew a new section in .. for any water damage .. seal any gaps with that goog you have and I’d look into a thin rubber roof over the entirety of the roof glued down riveted or screwed around the perimeter .. and this may also give you good space in the future for some solar panels .. as for the tundra I feel you’re right on track with that .. these ideas are obviously for budget minded repairs that will give you some longevity..

I bought an old sun chaser camper. And remodeled it inside and out, it's very doable. Just takes time and a little bit of patience. And if you're frugal, you can find the things you need for little money on craiglist. In the meantime, use a heavy duty tarp, to cover your moldy leaky canvas tarp, you can strap it down with bungee cords or power cord.
Every step of productivity creates a sense of satisfaction.
Baby step goals accomplished create a wonderful feeling of satisfaction and comfort in your new home... 😇👍

Hi Victoria, a couple of things I'd like to share with you as a mechanic and builder of high end yachts. When replacing bearings or suspension parts it's best to replace them both at the same time. I know it's more expensive but they were installed at the same time and wear out at about the same time. It'll save you money in the long run. Also, in yachts mildew and mold are a constant issue. Try to find an ozone generator that you can borrow to eliminate the mold. They are small electronic boxes which create ozone ( the stuff you smell after a thunderstorm) and kill mold, mildew and bacteria. If you can see the mold vinegar wiped own with a rag is the most effective at killing and removing it. Try it and see. I've dealt with massive mold issues and wanted to share what works best with you. Don't get discouraged kiddo, keep your chin up. Cheers! Mark from Maine

Hey, don't stress over it. You got what you a fair deal on it and it is what it is. Is it going to cost you some money to fix it? Sure, and by the looks of it, it's going to take a lot of work. But when all said and done, you're going to love it, you'll be proud of it, because of the work you put into it, you'll be able to make it the way you want it, and it will be all yours. Plus, there are many ways you can insulate the canvas for when you get into the colder places. Don't stress over the stuff that you can't control, just roll with it, figure it out and make the best of it.

Take your time and restore it. It will be a learning experience. At some point in the near future, sell it and get a travel trailer. It will be larger, more comfortable and a lot safer on the road. It will be a lot easier to decouple a travel trailer than to place your truck camper. The problem with truck campers is that you usually need a heavy duty truck. Travel trailer will allow any v8 and some v6's to tow. With a travel trailer, you won't be so restricted on weight as your truck will easily pull 5000lbs and there are many travel trailers in that range that will fall within that same $3300 price range.

People are modifying their crank handles for the roof lift and for the four jacks on the campers. They use an electric impact driver and it's faster as well as less physical stress on your body. Might be something to look into. Also maybe put new grease in the mechanisms to make it easier as well.

you dont need a new axle. take a grinder, cut some relief cuts on the sides, get a torch with some map gas and heat it red hot with the axle in a vice with the hub in the air. heat...and heat some more and the race should slide down on its own.
OR you can just cut off the race very carefully. if you nick the axle shaft, no big deal. theres many cars on the road with nicked shafts from getting the race off. the wheel bearing exploding is a common thing.
    hope this helps.

Measure the inside of your beds width, subtract the width of the bottom of the camper, devide by two an build 4 boxes that size. Put one in each corner before sliding it it to hold it centered.
Make a longer crank handle. Twice as long = half as hard to crank.
There are lots of cheap options for tying it down, but with those boxes avn it strapped forward, it will not go anywhere. I spent more than a year running 911 calls with one in the bed of my truck. They move a little a rock the truck a lot, but it never went anywhere.

Ive had that same exact camper but it was marketed by Apache. Get a cordless drill and adapter bit for that pop-up and the legs outside. I've had the samw setup, and Ok also had shifting issues. Its a little tricky on the Tundra because it has taller than normal bed sides. I made a steel platform that raised it up and centered it. (Coud do wood). Then had the torque lift mounts, and its didn't budge after that, even on off road trails.
I see you have the torque lift "Fast guns" I had those, but went back to the original. They hold it better. Use that money to purchase Airbags and a beefy sway bar. Made a HUGE difference on handling.
I currently moved to Powewagon and a Northstar pop-up. I absolutely love it and you will too!

It is always the hidden defects that cost money afterwards. And often you only see it when you want to do something with your car or camper. I am impressed by you every time. Of course there are setbacks and there are moments when you ask yourself what am I doing it all for. But in the end it is still the result of traveling to places to discover and live. You are doing great. You prove that you are just like everyone else a human being, who knows ups and downs. In the end there is always the solution and the good feeling. I believe in you, have been following you in the background for so long. And do not react quickly. But I understand so well the situations you get into. I see again and again that you find yourself again and can even love yourself. You can be proud of what you have done and will do. just a suggestion. wait until after you check out the item before offering the seller a lower amount than what they were originally asking. that way you don't feel guilty about backing out of the sale in case you decide it's not what you were looking for. you can still ask them "are you open to offers" beforehand, but let them know you want to check it out BEFORE you make your offer. this also makes it so you can offer an even lower amount than you were originally intending to if you find more problems that weren't listed in the sellers ad.

Nice camper, just needs tlc work with what ya have. Silicone wet spray lubricant on inside top mechanisms will help, not grease too messy and hard to pin point. Vinyl has stiffened why it's more difficult when raising and especially lowering. When temps drop will be more difficult even, plastic windows can crack at low temps don't raise/lower below 45 or so. Paint those cabinets white or something, sand and prep, wipe with acetone or paint thinner before painting, that vinyl has wax in it... ask me how i know. Good luck, get to work!

Looks like both are great upgrades & once you get it all fixed you will smile. As for raising the top once you’ve clean it up you can re-grease the tracks & get urself a good cordless drill to assist in raising & it will be good for many things you’ll need down the road like for the legs & don’t forget to number them cause they all go in differently from factory. Remember some of the negative comments can be used as a learning tool.
