  • In this lecture, we will study the various dimensions of scientific method like contructing a hypothesis, observation, experimentation, Empiricism, Objectivity, Value Neutrality, Generalisation and Multi-variate analysis. We will also analyse how scientific method uses Inductive approach to develop universal theories, principles and laws. We will also define science, study its characteristics and goals of understanding, predicting and ultimately controlling nature.

    Your lectures are really well, but you teach sociology but barely give any sociological example rather your entire lecture is field with science examples. I was forced to stop your video at your value neutrality example. I might not be as educated as you are, but I think two degrees in Sociology have given me a basic understanding of the subject. I don't know what to make out of it when you are giving examples like experiment and/or use of Nuclear technology as the value-neutralities example. What Value one has to neutralize to conduct an experiment between atomic nucleus?? please explain!! is the value involve no wearing any hazmat suit? because the little I know there might be moral involve in using Nuclear technology as a weapons, but we are talking here about Value Neutrality while conducting a research and experiment. I would be really glad if you could Enlighten me!!
    Because the little knowledge I have earn in last 5 years as a student of Sociology, value neutrality examples are mostly like letting go of Braminic value of purity and pollution while conducting a research in Dalit studies, or letting go of your Oriental Ideas and values while trying to understand Indian society as one needs to understand from there lens than your preconceived notion like the one M.N. Srinivas tried to do in his Remembered Village, or other ethnographic works like Whiter Saris and Sweet Mangoes, etc. or letting go of homophobia or transphobia while conducting a research in Human sexuality, like the one use while passing the landmark judgement of Navtej Singh Johar v/s UOI.

    • @kaarwan-e-upsc
      @kaarwan-e-upsc  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@dhritiparnasarkar5967 You need to have some patience dear.... All the things that you have mentioned are discussed in later lectures.....They are even discussed in Paper 2 Indian Sociology....From Weber's Value Relevance to Field studies of Srinivas....to Confirmation bias....value neutrality and ideology.....There are more than 100+ lectures of P1....and 50 lectures of Indian Sociology which discusses various issues in a sociological manner.....I have not discussed Value Neutrality here ....Just given a passing reference!!!
      Also as far as your question.....What value Neutrality should a scientist possess while conducting a research on matter?
      This is exactly the criticism of Positivists....That scientists deal with matter which possess no consciousness....and the subject nature of Physical Sciences is such that (as they deal with study of matter), the scientists need not be concerned about ut value neutrality...... Social sciences deal with the study of humans and as such value neutrality is difficult...
      All this stuff and dimensions has been discussed in the next 7-8 lectures (Debate whether Sociology is a Science or not)......This is just a single lecture that specifically deals with Science and Scientific Method !!
