Kim Namjoon did a V Live where he went into length to describe each story behind working on the album (Map if the soul: Persona):
"First, in this album, I was a lyric-writing-bot. I wrote more lyrics for this album than any other album. Except for SUGA and J-hope’s parts, I wrote about 80 or 90% of the lyrics for this album. I guess I wrote pretty much all the lyrics. It’s partly because I wanted to, and partly because I was entrusted with the work"
"I focused on writing the lyrics, but then writing my rap part got delayed. My solo track, ‘Intro : Persona’ took me a long time to work on, so it was a bit tough. It was a hard process but thankfully, it turned out well
For me, persona is the social self. It represents our social mask. A mask could be either good or bad. It is what we present to the outside world as we lead our social and economic life. My persona would be RM then, right?”
“When I spoke with PD Bang I told him that we wanted to go back to the start, that we can’t deal with these things around us. That things were getting too big for us to handle. That we’d like to focus on the smaller things. So we looked into ourselves. But then, why is it ‘Persona’?
“Persona is social mask. Persona represents our social mask. But isn’t this for ARMYs? I thought about it myself… But for me, my persona is RM or BTS. That’s my social mask and my self. But the mask and persona itself is ARMY"
“It was so much pressure and so tough. Of course, it is, since it’s a solo track. I wrote and fixed the lyrics and tore the structure apart countless times. When I first got this beat, it was 2 minutes and 54 seconds. I had to fill this entire thing with rap. The structure was simple. Verse, hook, chorus, and then verse, and hook. Another hook and out. It wasn’t anything special. but I wanted to go back to “What am I to you” feel.
“In ‘Mono’, I presented some chill and calm vibes. So I wanted to try out something wild which is my cup of tea. I really wanted to nail the rap to fill the entire thing with rap. I started with that thought. But it was SO tough
It’s such a simple track. I was under so much pressure. I kept fixing it even on the MV set. I practiced and changed constantly. It was even more challenging than ‘What am I to you’ in that ‘What am I to you’ had some clear narrative, but as for this one, this was it, and I had to come up with everything It was hard since I had to start from the scratch.
“But it turned out well. It turned out great. Going back and forth from Hong Kong or the U.S, I think in total, I re-recorded five times.”

This is some of RM’s best songwriting in my opinion (and the bar is high). The entire concept of the two map of the soul albums is phenomenal and it’s honestly worth looking at both albums in detail with regards to how they fit the Persona-Shadow-Ego parts, starting with the rap line solos but also the vocalist solos and remaining tracks. An absolute masterpiece.
This is one of those songs I’ll never take off of my playlist

*"Persona"* is very interesting song, it's actually speaking of different personalities of him self that he doesn't like, that's what I think. They say *"Persona"* is somewhat similar to *"Shadow"* by *Agust D/ Suga* I wheezed when he asked, *"is that a leg?"* 😂🤣

BTS was based on the book by psychoanalyst Carl Jung for this album (a masterpiece), Jung says that the human psyche is divided into conscious and unconscious, you have to know the archetypes to discover individuation. *Archetypes: PERSONA, EGO, SHADOW* (all are song titles on this album) Jung says it is a way to recognize and accept all parts of yourself, even shadows.
PERSONA is one of the elements of the conscious part of the psyche, it is a personality or a "mask" that an individual puts on and shows the world ... they are social masks that we use at different times. It does not represent our true identity. In a part of the song Namjoon talks about his success, he doesn't know who he is but others reward him for his behavior .. that is to say that he is rewarded by his side PERSONA as RM, he also talks about his "hesitation" that represents the SHADOW .
RM is originally a PERSON, he uses the "PERSONA" every time he is with BTS to introduce himself to the world) and that can be taken out when he is not with BTS ... oh god this is very short .. although I don't think you read it .. I say it again, I really recommend watching that video of the explanation, he can do it better than me.

The public image, that doesn't reflect all of you, it shows you thought, but maybe you're not, show you confident, but you're not always, show all your talents, but not your imperfections, and that's what fans love, the Persona.... He was portraying more about himself, but saying that can be the Persona too, if that's what fans need...

He pointed that in his lyrics because he is not sure if people like "the clumsy" Kim Namjoon or they like only RM- the other side of him , as a member of BTS, an idol... And the SGI is representing the PERSONA of Kim Namjoon- he is talking to the other side of him: "Dear MYSELF... "

Suga does Interlude: Shadow and J-Hope does Outro: Ego. So you were pretty close. I kept waiting for you to notice he was rapping about his shadow when it fell out of the locker but you guys are just too much fun. That's what you have us for.

the rap line have there solos in this era of map of the soul , in persona rm have this solo call persona , in map of the soul 7 Suga and jhope have there solos , Suga " shadow" and jhope "ego" you should react to them

People already explained it pretty well with what Persona means and that there’s also Shadow and Ego, but one thing I wanna mention is that all three songs use old tracks of theirs. Persona’s intro with the animation is directly pulled from the Intro Skool Luv Affair MV along with the music (from the 3rd album in 2014), Shadow uses the Intro from O!RUL8,2? album (2nd album from 2013) and even has the title animated in the Shadow MV. And EGO uses the Intro from 2 Cool 4 Skool (their debut album in 2013). They went backwards in time and repurposed their old tracks to portray their Map of the Soul.

In the past Kpop and artists hid their flaws and were groomed to look like idols that u couldn't live up to.
But BTS changed the game completely. Their founder bang Shi Hyuk or hitman bang wanted the boys to be relatable and genuine. So the boys started video logs and love streams, their reality shows and documentaries about what they struggle with, their insecurities, and worries. That's why army loves them soooo much. Yes their music is Bangin and their lyrics are profound but with the amount of content of BTS out there to watch their personalities and how they interact with one another as a family and share emotional parts of themselves it's really something else. We see who they r and relate to them so much more.
I just wanted to point that out. Since u said idols aren't allowed to show anything in depth.

Cuz hes the leader he gets the brunt of EVERYTHING, and these people usually always start their complains with "but Namjoon did this...but Namjoon said that...but Namjoon" (Kim Namjoon is RM's real name and its three syllables)

Perhaps it would be better if you saw an explanation video, but here are some key points of what’s the song about: first, Rm said “i’m still not sure if i’m dog or pig but then other people come and put the pearl necklace on me” there is a popular proverb in Korea of putting a pearl necklace on a pig’s neck and describing this proverb when you give something great and wonderful to a failed and incompetent person, meaning they are two different things. the value is totally useless putting them together. second, when namjoon said ”the but that should every time came before the three syllables” he talks about his real name kim-nam-joon and in korean it’s written in three syllables and that’s shown in the banner behind him It is ironic that he is aware of everything that is going on most of the time when people praise namjoon some haters come and say BUT Kim -Nam -Joon did this in the past and this and that. third, the huge fake animation of namjoon that showed in the mv describes his side as RM when he said: “no one is interested in my clumsiness” which they don’t want namjoon they want Rm the perfect idol so he need to put Rm fake character when ever he goes on the stage and how this fake character has grown and become huge. but at the end namjoon realized that Rm isn’t a fake persona but actually a part of his real persona that why he called it map of the soul and all of these robots that appeared in the video are aspects and parts of namjoon character that he controls
in conclusion this song is about Rm questioning him self if he deserves all of this when he’s pretending to be perfect while he’s not and how he suffers from all this pretending and putting fake masks, and which one is his true self? Rm or namjoon

So Persona was a good introduction (3/27/19) to the new Map of the Soul album series (which includes songs you’ve reacted to I believe) and is based on the Jungian psychology (of Carl Jung).
