Why sunflowers follow the sun

My brother Gary loved Sunflowers... He passed on several years ago... My wife and I looked out our back window yesterday and we saw a Sunflower growing in an old potted plant pot that used to have a palm in it... How did a Sunflower start growing there? There are none in my yard or the surrounding neighbors as well... Can't figure out how a Sunflower got there?

I think the sensor inside flower may develop its own sense of light intensity and differentiate it but what make it to choose higher intensity orientation over the other is more like human behavior known as preferably assettiveness

BS. My sunflowers face west when mature. Up here in the "north". The sun is blinding and they love it - noon and beyond. Ones near fences or other structures face east.
