  • According to some, we have 31 species of deer to chase in North America. Is that true? Mark Boardman joins Arizona Game and Fish Wildlife Biologist Jim Heffelfinger to find out. Jim is a passionate deer expert, has written books on deer, coauthored books on deer, runs the website deernut.com, can be found on Instagram as @cervidnut, and is a full research scientist at the University of Arizona’s School of Natural Resources and the Environment. Not surprising of anyone who loves deer this much, he’s a deer hunter too. Tune in for a fun and informative conversation with our deer friend Jim all about deer.

Yes, please. More "natural history" and animal focused podcasts like this. It's cool to learn more about the game we chase.

Great video. When I was stationed at Fort Bragg, NC, I noticed the deer tended to be small. It was mostly swampy areas. The deer would weigh between 70 to 100 lbs. When I traveled west towards the Piedmont area where there was forest, cornfields and soybeans, the deer would weight between 180 to 200 lbs. I don't think it was different deer but thought it was nutrition. Just my observations.

Definitely nutrition. A study in SD brought bigger deer from one part of the state and smaller deer from another and put them in captivity together and fed them all they wanted. They found that it took 2 generations for the smaller deer to "catchup" to the larger ones.

It was interesting to hear about how people still debate what makes a species or not. I was reading "The Naturalist: Theodore Roosevelt" by Darrin Lunde and part of it covers Roosevelt's attempts to discredit naturalists who thought each little variation was a new species. It's good read.

Mispronounciations of Cowes in English in Britain compared to USA can be quite Comical when first encountered, like Cowes a Centre of Sailing on the South Coast of England, and then I creased up hearing how Americans Pronounce Buoys like Marker Buoys , and I was WTF are they Talking About with these Boooeee Things, then someone Spelled the word out for me, Talk About Divided by a Common Labguage lol. 🤣🤣🤣 ❤Deer (especially Roe Deer, Fallow, and hilarious little Muntjac) Great discussion. Best Wishes. Bob in Wales. 👍

56:24 Cannot claim to know specifics towards genetics vs food supply, but whitetail in SE MN are noticeable different from those found in the NE part of the state. Body proportions in general are different as the arrowhead deer appear to have longer and stockier bodies.

Many missed opportunities in questioning this professional! So many questions. I witnessed a mule deer buck breeding a whitetail doe.....what comes of this? Moose, caribou elk....they say moose are the biggest "deer" species..

At the end, how did you not ask which animal extinct from more than 1000 years would Jim bring back today and why?

NOT Smilodon fatalis! (saber-toothed tiger). It would be Megaloceros giganteus - the Irish Elk (which isn't exclusively Irish nor is it an elk). They are properly called Giant Deer and I want one.
